Abstract:

Gabrielsen, Natalia Marie, and Natalia Marie Gabrielsen. "'Ideal Vehicles': Medallic Circuitry in Nineteenth-Century Portraits of Native Americans." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/626399.

Full text
Abstract:
I examine the mobility and circulation of peace medals featured in nineteenth-century portraiture of Native Americans through the lens of object-oriented ontology. This research strives to establish a different perspective for considering nineteenth-century portraiture of Native Americans by situating the works through the framework of materiality and circulation. By applying this approach to a series of portraits of Native Americans with peace medals, my research seeks to define issues of movement and power within the transient, fluctuating space of the nineteenth-century American frontier. To accomplish this, I trace the production and distribution of peace medals within paintings widely viewed at the time, as well as the movement of groups and individuals involved with transporting and receiving the medals. Tracking these objects and their mechanisms of movement within the visual culture of the nineteenth century, indicating not only the thing itself but also its processes of production and movement, reveals a dimension of specificity to pictorial narratives, even as the exhibited artworks promoted generalized ideals regarding Indian policy through their circulation. I follow the peace medals’ logistics of production and transit to underscore issues of value and currency on the American frontier, highlighting the ways in which peace medals and the artwork depicting them participated in narratives of Native displacement.

Abstract:
The primary objective of this creative project was the exploration of Japanese sagemono ensembles and the metal working techniques needed for their creation. Sagemono ensembles are hanging accessories worn by the Japanese men of the 16th through the early 20th centuries. The secondary objective was to design and construct four sagemono ensembles using both traditional Japanese themes and patterns along with more contemporary motifs which emerged from the artist's explorations of the original Japanese ensembles. This body of work required a variety of traditional metalsmithing techniques including: complex sheet constructions, photoetching, copper-plating and forming, inlay, and casting.
Department of Art

This creative project resulted in five metal handbags, each based on a specific period from art history: Egyptian, Classical, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Memphis. These styles range from early human history to contemporary times and possess very explicit and identifiable motifs. They maintain links to each other and impact design to this day.The project culminates in an exhibit. A brief description of the relevant era is printed on attached tags to generate mini art history lessons. People who see or use the handbags will gain exposure to art history they may not otherwise seek out, potentially piquing their curiosity. The aim is to sell all five handbags so they may demonstrate that art history is a vital part of human history because it continues to inform and inspire a spectrum of endeavors from advertising and fashion to engineering and design.
Department of Art

Abstract:
Animal imagery has been part of the human effort to understand our place in the world since the beginning of recorded history. Through examining the role and use of animal imagery in the creation of cultural signals, I have developed a framework for my practice. Edgelands employs representations of feral animals as symbols for the “misfit” to emphasize the value of those who do not fit in. My experience as a woman in the field of metal work informs my material choice and process, subverting ironwork motifs and the purpose of gates and boundaries. Edgelands overlaps a series of material contradictions to begin the process of questioning the validity of commonly held delineations. The intersection of environmentalism, craft, and feminism is the space in which I interject the feral animal in an effort to reconcile aspects of my own experience as a misfit and learn about the world through making.

Abstract:
INTENT OF BINARY TALES EXHIBITION "Binary Tales", my MFA exhibition offers an alternative point of view of diversity and immigration to provoke thought in the audience. I'm gifted with the ability to express myself through the visual arts in the medium of metal. I also have the experiences to carry a message of hope and exploration through the tale of my immigration and assimilation in the great American culture. Using my abilities and experience, I seized the opportunity of excitement and hope generated by the President's leadership to further breakdown cultural barriers. "Binary Tales" guided the viewer in a vicarious journey through my life story as an immigrant trying to fit into American society and provide chances to understand and consider issues of culture; with particular attention to the effects of war and immigration. Perhaps the audience can then take that understanding and apply it to current issues of war and immigration. INTENT OF BINARY TALES THESIS This thesis paper is intended to supplement Binary Tales the Exhibition in two ways. First, by way of Chapter I and II, this thesis shall serve as a conceptual guide and contextual supplement to the artworks in the exhibition. Second, the rest of this thesis will supplement the exhibition by further detailing the philosophy that produced the work from the philosophy's development, to its current definition, and to its application.

Wang, Ge. "NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF METAL TRANSFER IN GAS METAL ARC WELDING." UKnowledge, 2007. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/gradschool_diss/538.

Full text
Abstract:
In gas metal arc welding (GMAW), metal transfer plays a crucial role in determining the quality of the resultant weld. In the present dissertation, a numerical model with advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques has been developed first in order to provide better numerical results. It includes a two-step projection method for solving the incompressible fluid flow; a volume of fluid (VOF) method for capturing free surface; and a continuum surface force (CSF) model for calculating surface tension. The Gauss-type current density distribution is assumed as the boundary condition for the calculation of the electromagnetic force. The droplet profiles, electric potential and velocity distributions within the droplet are calculated and presented for different metal transfer modes. The analysis is conducted to find the most dominant effects influencing the metal transfer behavior. Comparisons between calculated results and experimental results for metal transfer under constant current are presented and show good agreement. Then, our numerical model is used to study a proposed modified pulsed current gas metal arc welding. This novel modified pulsed current GMAW is introduced to improve the robustness of the welding process in achieving a specific type of desirable and repeatable metal transfer mode, i.e., one drop per pulse (ODPP) mode. This new technology uses a peak current lower than the transition current to prevent accidental detachment and takes advantage of the downward momentum of the droplet oscillation to enhance the detachment. The calculations are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in achieving the desired metal transfer process in comparison with conventional pulsed current GMAW. Also, the critical conditions for effective utilization of this proposed method are identified by the numerical simulation. The welding operational parameters and their ranges are also calculated and the calculated results further demonstrate the robustness of this new GMAW technique in achieving high quality welding.

Full text
Abstract:
"Barriers to Closure" was a series of narratives specifically focusing on reoccurring thoughts, fears and anxieties within the artist's life. Instilled when he was younger, these anxieties were never resolved, thus creating additional fears as he grew into adolescence. Eventually they transformed into an intricate obstacle causing resolution to be a difficult task. These narratives are presented in thick bronze frames which constrain the content into a limited space. The pieces are purposefully small due to the artist's personal restriction of revealing what needs to be seen. Therefore, the viewer must draw closer to the piece in order to view the information presented and relate the body of work to their own hidden fears. This exhibition provided an outlet for the artist to deal with feelings that are difficult to explain/express. Communicating these anxieties through this series of visual narratives, assisted the artist in resolving many personal conflicts.
Department of Art

Abstract:
The work I create attempts to explore the vast precipice between adolescence and adulthood. Our whole lives we are essentially labeled one or the other yet we are often striving to be the one we are not. Childhood is fleeting, gone the moment we realize how truly special it is. Adulthood is elusive, ever looming yet continually out of reach. I choose to work with materials and imagery that is commonly known to us as children and attempt to make it a more "grown-up" version of itself. This allows for several layers of meaning. It can be a simple reminder of days past and an encouragement to not take ourselves too seriously. It is also an attempt to find the fine line between children acting like adults and adults being children. Often we dress ourselves up and pretend to be something we're not. Maybe we're fooling everyone. Maybe we're only fooling ourselves.

Abstract:
Energy consumption has grown by 2% per year worldwide over the past ten years. In 2005 worldwide 900,000 barrels of oil and 7.6 billion cubic metre of natural gas were produced daily. The exploitation of fields to meet the increased demands in energy requires the presence of adequate infrastructures. High strength pipeline steels(X100) have been developed to operate at higher pressures allowing a greater volume of fuel to be transported. Additional advantages arising from the reduction in wall thickness contribute to reduction in construction costs and steel volume.

Full text
Abstract:
Through the lens of underground heavy metal, this thesis explores the importance of live music and the ways in which music worlds transform, decline and remain resilient. In a departure from traditional academic studies of heavy metal, which focus on notions of youth, rebellion, gender and subversive themes, (Weinstein, 1999; Krenske and McKay, 2000; Bennett, 2001), this thesis takes a novel approach in exploring the active nature of this music world. As artists face problems with digital distribution and the related decline of record sales, live music was expected to flourish, as artists seek to compensate for lost recording revenue through live shows. However, this world is not as straightforward as it might appear; arguably it is an industry which is becoming increasingly volatile. As grass-roots venues close and touring costs increase for artists, underground live music faces a particularly tough struggle. Therefore, in contributing to the growing body of literature on 'Art Worlds', (Becker, 1982), this thesis develops an understanding of the ways in which venues, promoters and audiences attempt to sustain this music world. Through surveying attendance at live events and interviewing active participants, it is argued that whilst this music world suggests elements of decline it also shows perseverance. Through the development of translocal networks and maintenance of community, these participants pool resources in order to facilitate live events; even in the face of tremendous struggle. In doing so, this thesis makes a unique contribution to academic understandings of underground metal, capturing this music world at a particularly tumultuous time.

Abstract:
My pieces are inspired by bubble wrap. I was inspired by a Japanese toy which you can squeeze it unlimited times to help people to release there pressures. As the same way, some people like to pop the bubbles from bubble wraps. I used this idea to make my jewelry projects to represent how people act while they suffer from stress and how they release pressure. Based on this idea, you can see the shapes or forms of my works have various possibilities, some of them are simple but others are complicated assemblies. People have various ways to handle stress. Wearing jewelry shows not only their personality but also their emotion. While they sometimes choose their jewelry pieces based on beauty they also choose them based on their emotions. I transformed two-dimensional flat sheets of bubble wrap into three-dimensional forms by stretching and folding them. I also experimented with various materials including plastic, resin, metal, and wood. Most of my works are brooches, rings, and necklaces.

Cardwell, Thomas. "Still life and death metal : painting the battle jacket." Thesis, University of the Arts London, 2017. http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/12036/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to conduct a study of battle jackets using painting as a recording and analytical tool. A battle jacket is a customised garment worn in heavy metal subcultures that features decorative patches, band insignia, studs and other embellishments. Battle jackets are significant in the expression of subcultural identity for those that wear them, and constitute a global phenomenon dating back at least to the 1970s. The art practice juxtaposes and re-contextualises cultural artefacts in order to explore the narratives and traditions that they are a part of. As such, the work is situated within the genre of contemporary still life and appropriative painting. The paintings presented with the written thesis document a series of jackets and creatively explore the jacket form and related imagery. The study uses a number of interrelated critical perspectives to explore the meaning and significance of the jackets. Intertextual approaches explore the relationship of the jackets to other cultural forms. David Muggleton’s ‘distinctive individuality’ and Sarah Thornton’s ‘subcultural capital’ are used to emphasise the importance of jacket making practices for expressions of personal and corporate subcultural identity. Italo Calvino’s use of postmodern semiotic structures gives a tool for placing battle jacket practice within a shifting network of meanings, whilst Richard Sennett’s‘material consciousness’ helps to understand the importance of DIY making practices used by fans. The project refers extensively to a series of interviews conducted with battle jacket makers between 2014 and 2016. Recent art historical studies of still life painting have used a materialist critique of historic works to demonstrate the uniqueness of painting as a method of analysis. The context for my practice involves historical references such as seventeenth century Dutch still life painting. The work of contemporary artists who are exploring the themes and imagery of extreme metal music is also reviewed.

Full text
Abstract:
The natural forces of earth, sea and sky provide a wealth of inspiration for the creation of jewelry and metalwork. This project involved the investigation of such natural forces as erosion, growth cycles, tides and wind currents, followed by the design and construction of a body of work based on what was observed.During the observation phase, the artist collected source material In the form of photographs, rough sketches, tracings and actual physical evidence o f the natural forces a t work. The designs were based on a synthesis of the impressions gathered, rather than on one particular source. Not only were the visual and tactile aspects of the forces considered important, but the artist's emotional responses to those forces played a role in the designs as well.A total of thirteen pieces of jewelry and three boxes were created. Chasing, repousse, inlay and reticulation were the metalworking techniques primarily used to render the natural imagery. An intensive study of chasing and repousse was undertaken, as these techniques were especially suited to illustrating the wide variety of form and texture present in nature, from graceful, sweeping cloud formations to heavily modeled rock surfaces. The inlay process proved to be an adaptable way of mounting irregularly shaped natural materials, particularly shells, in the jewelry and boxes. The swirling quality of reticulation effectively represented such textures as the ruffled fungal growths found in forests, or the rushing, foaming tides at the edge of a shoreline.By combining close observation of the effects of natural forces with appropriate metalworking techniques, an aesthetically striking and highly original collection of jewelry and metalwork was conceived and executed.
Department of Art

Huang, Yi. "CONTROL OF METAL TRANSFER AT GIVEN ARC VARIABLES." UKnowledge, 2011. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/ece_etds/4.

Full text
Abstract:
Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) is one of the most important welding processes in industrial application. To control metal transfer at given variables is a focus in the field of research and development in welding community. In this dissertation, laser enhanced GMAW is proposed and developed by adding a lower power laser onto the droplet to generate an auxiliary detaching force. The electromagnetic force needed to detach droplets, thus the current that determines this force, is reduced. Wire feed speed, arc voltage, and laser intensity were identified as three major parameters that affect the laser enhanced metal transfer process and a systematic series of experiments were designed and conducted to test these parameters. The behaviors of the laser enhanced metal transfer process observed from high speed images were analyzed using the established physics of metal transfer. In all experiments, the laser was found to affect the metal transfer process as an additional detaching force that tended to change a short-circuiting transfer to drop globular or drop spray, reduce the diameter of the droplet detached in drop globular transfer, or decrease the diameter of the droplet such that the transfer changed from drop globular to drop spray. The enhancement of the laser was found to increase as the laser intensity increased. The larger laser intensity tended to help reduce the size of the droplet detached. The arc voltage affected the metal transfer process through changing the current and changing the gap and possible time interval of the droplet development. A larger arc voltage helped reduce the size of the droplet detached through an increased electromagnetic force. Desired heat input and current/arc pressure waveforms may thus be both delivered and controlled by GMAW through laser enhancement. Laser recoil pressure force was estimated based on the difference of gravitational force with and without laser pulse, and the result was with an acceptable accuracy. Good formation of welds and full penetration of thin plate could be obtained using laser enhanced GMAW. A nonlinear model was established to simulate the dynamic metal transfer in laser enhanced GMAW, and the results agree with the experimental one.

Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng (Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005.
This study involved the modelling and verification of the Shielded Metal Arc Welding of mild steel with the focus on displacement and temperature distribution prediction of welded plates. The project was divided into three phases namely; the literature survey into finite element modelling of welding processes, the modelling of a welding process and verification of the modelling with experimental results. A working welding model was created using a commercial finite element software package with the capabilities to model welding processes. The welding model was systematically developed from a two-dimensional model into a threedimensional full physics process model. Experimental measured welding heat input parameters were applied in the model, temperature dependent material properties were applied and actual structural restraints from the experiments were modelled. Displacement and temperature distributions were measured on mild steel plates welded with the Shielded Metal Arc Welding process. The plate temperature was measured at various locations with K-type thermocouples spot welded onto the plates. Plate deformation was measured at various stages of the manufacturing process. Tendencies in plate displacement were investigated with a change in certain welding parameters. The finite element model was verified and good correlations were found, especially for the temperature distribution in the welded plates.

Abstract:
The objective of this work was to model a transferred arc metal evaporator including the behavior of a plasma arc and the molten anode being continuously evaporated. The model predicted the system temperature and velocity distributions as well as the rate of metal evaporation. The effects of arc current, arc length, plasma gas flow rate, crucible temperature, surrounding temperature, and hydrogen addition to an argon arc have been investigated and some optimization of operating conditions was done.
The appropriate governing equations were solved numerically. The numerical results of the present investigation revealed that the geometry of the crucible did not significantly affect the temperature distribution of anode surface or the metal vaporization rate. Increasing plasma torch flow rate also did not lead to an increase of the temperature of the anode surface and the metal vaporization rate. However, the crucible temperatures significantly affected the vaporization rate; the crucible should be maintained at a high temperature, which is compatible to the physico-chemical properties of the crucible material. The arc current strongly affected the vaporization. Addition of hydrogen to the plasma gas caused a significant increase of vaporization rate. The arc length greatly affected the surface temperature distribution, the metal vaporization rate, the arc voltage, and the total power. Shorter arcs were found to be more effective. The modeling results were in reasonable agreement with the experiment results.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This practice-led research project explores how humour can be employed to develop a methodology for examining the socio-political dimensions of contemporary art practice. This research aims to identify and elaborate on how using the evasive strategies and elliptical frameworks associated with ideas of the absurd and nonsense can lead to new ways of understanding the nexus between social, political and cultural practices. This is achieved primarily through an examination of the art practices of Marcel Duchamp, Bruce Nauman, and Martin Kippenberger. These artists contextualise this research because in different ways they all engage with humour as a device to critique conventional notions of how art can be read or understood. Using these strategies the project aims to demonstrate new ways for considering how visual art can use humour to creatively and critically investigate the relationships between art and the social.

Abstract:
I see the moment of creation as a threshold, a fertile ground where anything is possible. My work combines an interest in science, mythology, cosmologies, and a childlike sense of wonderment to seek the unknowable. I create formless floating worlds that have a seducing, enlightening, and ultimately deceiving presence. Vibrant lusty clusters of candied opulence emphasize the wetness at the beginning of life. Dry folds give way to woozy nests and frenzied organisms while dripping crystalline structures puncture soft unknowable terrains. Through the process of making I indulge my desire to create an otherworld, one that bubbles, garishly drips, and slips slowly into lavish amalgamations. By combining artificial and organic materials with the rich traditions of metalsmithing, I am able to explore the infinity of tiny connections that make up the complex whole of the natural world. I make as a result of my own curiosity, drawing and building an imaginary world, from one layer to the next.
