Abstract:

Despain, Shannon Marie. "A Content Analysis of Family Structure in Newbery Medal and Honor Books, 1930 -- 2010." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3648.

Full text
Abstract:
Newbery books are a reliable representation of quality children's literature. They have not previously been formally evaluated by the family structures represented in the books. This content analysis considered 87 contemporary realistic fiction Newbery winner and Honor books since the 1930s that portray families in English-speaking, western settings. The family structures portrayed in these books were compared with the family structure categories of the decade in which each book is set. Percentage comparisons revealed that the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s do not represent the actual family structures of their time period. After the Age of New Realism began in the mid 60s, the family structures in the books more closely matched the family structures of their decade, but several discrepancies remained.

Martin, Kimberly Bartels. "A descriptive view of the portrayal of Jewish and Christian lifestyles in award-winning children's books from 1960 to 1990 using content analysis." Virtual Press, 1990. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/722242.

Full text
Abstract:
The extent to which Jewish and Christian lifestyle actions were portrayed in 62 children's books of accepted literary worth was studied. The researcher read the Newbery award book and one Newbery honor book for each year in search of actions that Jewish and Christians active in their faiths deemed important. The sample consisted of the Newbery award book and one Newbery honor book for each year from 1960 to 1990. A content analysis of 13 action categories found that the five most common actions were (1) compassionate/ charitable deeds, (2) telling others about God, (3) prayer, (4) worship attendance and (5) reading the Bible. No significant change in the frequency of the 13 actions was found over time. However, the researcher found that Jewish and Christian lifestyles were portrayed only nominally in the Newbery books. The sample distribution shows that 65 percent of the sampled books contained fewer than the mean of 4.9 actions per 100 pages. Only six books contained strong Jewish or Christian characters - that is, main characters whose faith in God was portrayed as playing an important role in everyday life. Jewish characters of any kind (prominent or obscure) were found in only three books. Of the eight books that contained more than 10 actions per 100 pages, only one was about people in a contemporary setting: The Great Gillv Hopkins (1979). Actions were recorded regardless of which character committed them. In four books, characters' actions seemed inconsistent with the rest of the character's portrayed lifestyle. Some books contained a large number of actions contrary to Judeo-Christian lifestyles, with portrayals of hate and cruelty far outweighing portrayals of Jewish or Christian lifestyle actions. The most extreme of these wereThe Tombs of Atuan (1972) and The Witches of Worm (1973). Other studies have asserted that multicultural literature should be preferred because children need positive exposure to all cultures. This study concludes that portrayal of the cultures of committed Jews and Christians has not been common of the Newbery books since at least 1960.<br>Department of Journalism

Gabrielsen, Natalia Marie, and Natalia Marie Gabrielsen. "'Ideal Vehicles': Medallic Circuitry in Nineteenth-Century Portraits of Native Americans." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/626399.

Full text
Abstract:
I examine the mobility and circulation of peace medals featured in nineteenth-century portraiture of Native Americans through the lens of object-oriented ontology. This research strives to establish a different perspective for considering nineteenth-century portraiture of Native Americans by situating the works through the framework of materiality and circulation. By applying this approach to a series of portraits of Native Americans with peace medals, my research seeks to define issues of movement and power within the transient, fluctuating space of the nineteenth-century American frontier. To accomplish this, I trace the production and distribution of peace medals within paintings widely viewed at the time, as well as the movement of groups and individuals involved with transporting and receiving the medals. Tracking these objects and their mechanisms of movement within the visual culture of the nineteenth century, indicating not only the thing itself but also its processes of production and movement, reveals a dimension of specificity to pictorial narratives, even as the exhibited artworks promoted generalized ideals regarding Indian policy through their circulation. I follow the peace medals’ logistics of production and transit to underscore issues of value and currency on the American frontier, highlighting the ways in which peace medals and the artwork depicting them participated in narratives of Native displacement.

Morton, Tami Butler. "Identity of African American Characters in Newbery Medal and Newbery Honor Award Winning Books: a Critical Content Analysis of Books From 1991 to 2011." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2012. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc177233/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to conduct a critical content analysis of the African American characters found in Newbery Medal award winning books recognized between the years of 1991 and 2011. The John Newbery Medal is a highly regarded award in the United States for children's literature and esteemed worldwide. Children's and adolescents' books receive this coveted award for the quality of their writing. Though these books are recognized for their quality writing, there is no guideline in the award criteria that evaluated the race and identity of the characters. Hence, there are two overarching research questions that guided this study. The first question asked: To what extent are the African American characters in each award winning book represented? Foci in answering this question were the frequency of African American characters and the development of their ethnic identities. The second question asked: How are the African American characters' intergroup attitudes and interactions represented? Foci in answering this question examined the frequency of intergroup interactions and the characters' attitudes within the context of each book. The theoretical framework that undergirded this study is critical literacy, which encourages adults and youth to examine issues of diversity and social justice through their reading. Eighteen books met the criteria for the study, which provided 98 African American characters for investigation through content analysis. The qualitative methodology used frequency counts, anecdotal notes and questionnaires to analyze the characters. Findings revealed two key themes: the characterization of ethnic identity as a reflection of society and African American characters as models of agency. Further themes became evident in this study as well: the evolution of cultural authenticity, strong African American female characters, importance of the African American family and the acknowledgement of African American involvement in history. These findings are significant because they provided evidence of the potential of these Newbery award winning books to be the catalyst for critical classroom conversations on identity and agency. Findings also provided increasingly strong examples of ethnic role models within these notable titles.

Abstract:
Nowadays, liberal democratic societies comprise the breeding ground for thriving right-wing populist parties. They share the “fundamental core of ethno-nationalist xenophobia, (…) and anti-political establishment populism” (Rydgren, 2004 p.475). Coeval research has acknowledged the threat that is entailed in the bespoken phenomenon; yet, its account is incomplete.  This study follows Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, in objecting to the individualist and rationalist tenets that inform previous research, to accentuate a neglected lens on the thrive of right-wing populism in Western liberal democracies. Their discourse theoretical frame was herein used as both theory and method, in a discourse analysis of the Alternative für Deutschland’s (AfD) identity in German online newspaper discourse. The empirical material comprised 97 articles from Germany’s most popular national daily newspapers, which reported on the AfD in parliament, an AfD demonstration in Berlin, and the AfD’s youth organisation’s congress throughout April, May and June 2018. Ultimately, the study arrived at the conclusion that the sampled newspaper discourse identified ‘us’, the ‘benevolent democrats’ via the exclusion, and rejection of ‘them’, the ‘wicked right-wing populists’. Since such relation was markedly antagonistic proper, newspaper discourse may be considered to have contributed to the recent thrive of right-wing populism in Germany.

Griffin, Melanie. "Once Upon a Genre: Distant Reading, the Newbery Medal, and the Affordances of Interdisciplinary Paradigms for Understanding Children’s Literature." Scholar Commons, 2018. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7160.

Full text
Abstract:
Typical critical patterns for studying children’s literature, defined in this study as a written text intended for a reader up to the age of 14, make it difficult to chart generic change across a large corpus of texts. Traditionally, criticism of children’s literature focuses on cherry picked archetypes, exemplars, and the standout extraordinary. This study employs interdisciplinary methods and data sources from library science, education, and literary studies to create a method for analyzing a sample corpus of children’s literature more holistically vis-à-vis distant, macroscopic reading techniques. In this dissertation, I macroscopically read the corpus of Newbery Medal-winning texts in order to identify patterns of change in the genre of prized 20th century American children’s literature, seeking to animate this corpus of texts in different ways than is possible through microscopic analysis alone. The resulting analysis foregrounds the shared conventions of the text set, including descriptive elements, including bibliographic information, author information, publisher information, illustrative content, and length; structural elements, point of view, literary form, and select measures of text complexity; and thematic elements, including book summaries and subject analyses from a range of library, publisher, and social media databases. In addition, I consider various metrics for assessing popularity of the corpus as a whole and the ways in which popularity changes as time passes. Ultimately, in this dissertation I distantly read the corpus in conversation with existing critical understandings of the Newbery Medal, which previous critics generated using microscopic, close reading techniques, in order to investigate what changes with the introduction of distant methods. Distantly reading this corpus in conversation with existing critical understandings of the Newbery reveal that a more holistic approach to analysis paints a broader, more complete picture of the genre of prized children’s literature than microscopic, close reading alone does. Further, distant reading underscores the critical importance of explicit attention to methodology. The results that distant reading uncovers are inextricably intertwined with the methodological decisions made.

Schulz, Armin Richard. "A Content Analysis Of The Developmental Bibliotherapeutic Implications Of The Books Nominated For The California Young Reader Medal (1975--1986)." Scholarly Commons, 1987. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/3230.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose. The purpose of this study was to investigate the developmental bibliotherapeutic implications of the California Young Reader Medal nominated books from 1975-1986 in six different selected categories of thematic content. Emotional Health, Self-Awareness, and Identity Needs; Cultural Differences; Family Relationships and Dynamics; Peer Relationships and Dynamics; Physical Limitations and Handicaps; and Economic Situations and Factors. Findings. Primary Category books, largely modern fanciful fiction, demonstrated limited developmental bibliotherapeutic potential. However, story illustrations affected the over-all impact of the story. Intermediate Category books had greater levels of potential, especially stories dealing with family, peers, and emotional health. The greatest levels of potential were present in the contemporary realistic fiction genre and in historical fiction. Intermediate Category books from the 1980s were higher in potential than books of the 1970s. Little distinction was found between the Primary Category books of the 70s and the 80s. Similar elements of story potential were identified by all groups, although at varying levels of sophistication. Many of the California titles had regional and national appeal. Recommendations. Based on the findings of this study, the major recommendations are as follows: (1) Developmental bibliotherapy as an art should be used in the study of literature with young children. Educators need to have an awareness of current issues confronting children and how these issues are treated in current literature. (2) Authors and publishers should produce quality books dealing with cultural differences and universal understanding as well as meaningful books in the genre of contemporary realistic fiction and historical fiction. Consideration should also be given to promoting books dealing with physical limitations and handicaps. (3) Teachers and librarians should continue the oral tradition of shared literature with children to enhance a child's understanding and appreciation of the beauty of words, writing styles, cultural differences, and changing life situations. (4) State young reader program committees, librarians, and educators should identify quality books for inclusion on their masterlists to be read by children. (5) More content analysis studies, similar to this study, should be conducted to enrich the body of knowledge about children's literature and to extend the understanding of the current thematic trends present in literature for the younger readers. Pehrson, Casey Lin. "Portrayal of Characters with Disabilities in Newbery Books." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2821.

Full text
Abstract:
Commonly practiced in school settings, bibliotherapy promotes healing and problem solving. In schools, bibliotherapy should be utilized to educate and empower students and to enhance the classroom experience. In order to achieve this purpose, teachers need a variety of books to specifically target students' unique needs. Award-winning books, such as those receiving the prestigious Newbery Medal, are important resources for teachers. This study examined the portrayal of characters with disabilities in 249 Newbery Medal and Honor books published between 1922 and 1974. From this sample, 20 books featured a combined total of 21 characters with a disability, as defined by the 13 disability categories (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, IDEA). The majority of characters were portrayed with orthopedic impairment (43%; n = 9). Other disabilities represented in this sample of books included visual impairment (19%; n = 4); emotional disturbance (14%; n = 3); mental retardation (9%; n = 2); speech or language impairment (5%; n = 1); multiple disabilities (5%; n = 1); and other health impairment (5%; n = 1). Overall, according to the language and customs of the time period that reflected the settings of the books, characters with disabilities were sensitively portrayed. However, when judged by today's standards, these portrayals were considered insensitive.

Full text
Abstract:
An abundance of research has been conducted about the importance of including books and literature as part of a young child's developmental process. Much of this research suggests that picture books are vital to a young child's healthy development and "are important influences that shape us by reflecting the politics and values of our society" (Fox, 1993, p. 656). This study was completed to analyze character roles and gender representation of male and female characters exclusively in children's picture books. The entire population of Caldecott Award and Honor Medal books published between 2001 and 2011 was utilized for a frequency analysis. Each Caldecott Award and Honor Medal book meeting this study's criteria was examined, read and analyzed. Books included only works of fiction and were delimited to exclude biographies, autobiographies, informational books, concept books and poetry. A total of 24 books were used in the data analysis. This research attempted to answer the following question: Are males and females equitably represented in recently published children's literature? From a content-analysis approach, within a historical perspective, this research aimed at examining if gender bias still dominates the literature, and if so, to what extent. The intellectual interest of this project is in discovering male and female presence and imagery in children's picture books.<br>B.S.<br>Bachelors<br>Education and Human Performance<br>Elementary Education

Full text
Abstract:
<p> Using performance and cultural study lenses, this dissertation employs a case study methodology to explore how embodied Black male political voice was used during the 1968 Summer Olympic medal stand protest in Mexico City, Mexico. Creative moral protest is a "hallmark of nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience" <i>The art of moral protest</i>, (Jasper, 1997). By the late 1960s, several innovative expressions of political activism, involving Black men, had been set forth in the United States. However, on October 16, 1968 in Mexico City, the world witnessed one of history's most memorable and iconic protests. Using a brazen and unprecedented style, two Black US college athletes expanded socio/economic discourse relating to Black Americans. Epitomizing innovation in moral protest and cultural representation, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, with raised Black-gloved fists, furthered international awareness to the struggle for equal rights in America. Collectively, the track stars fashioned an unprecedented cultural discourse using imagery and symbolism as their political voice during the 1968 Olympic medal stand awards ceremony. </p><p> Grappling with political forces of White supremacy and institutional racism, the two Olympians combined social aptitude with academic and political consciousness. In doing so, the San Jose State University students used a visual protest language that aided in how the world defined politically conscious Black masculinity. Their display during the 1968 Summer Olympic medal stand ceremony helped to introduce many to the disenfranchised voice of Black America, still echoing against the backdrop of the ideology of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Following the deaths of King and Malcolm X. The two Olympians sought to expand upon the successful use of symbolic boycotts and protest marches to challenge an American meta-narrative about Black citizenship and identity. Black males, in particular, were involved in highly visible groups such as: <i> The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense</i> and, <i>SNCC</i>. The two met Professor Harry Edwards, leader of <i>the Olympic Project for Human Rights</i> (<i>OPHR</i>), while students at San Jose State University. They later joined <i>OPHR</i>. According to Edwards, author of the book <i>The Struggle That Must Be</i>, (Edwards, 1980), an Olympic boycott protest was intended to "set forth the imagery of intelligent Black men who were socially conscious" (Edwards, 1980,p.28).</p><p>

Abstract:
Jesse Owens was the star of the Berlin Olympics in 1936. His four gold medals in Hitler's Germany, as an African American, had far reaching implications back in the United States. Despite segregation and a social hierarchy that was an impasse to both black opportunity and achievement, Owens created a lasting legacy that drastically impacted race relations. The purpose of this thesis was to examine what the Olympic glory of Owens represented for society. Owens as an Olympian in 1936 manufactured a brand of social capital that tied people together in commonality—as Americans. As well, in both myth and deed, Owens has been traditionally credited with challenging Hitler's beliefs of Aryan Supremacy. Yet, Owens was also a race pioneer, as his athletic feats were read in newspapers all over the country, and as a result, helped shift the consciousness of Southerners who were historically ignorant of black achievement.

Full text
Abstract:
Corrosion, wear or the combined effects of these failure modes cost the industrial economies hundreds of billions of euros each year. One of the more effective ways to reduce damage due to corrosion and wear is to treat, or “engineer” the surface, so that it can perform functions that are distinct from those required by most materials. For example, steel is a very popular material, because it is inexpensive, strong and easily manufactured. Unfortunately, it is highly susceptible to corrosion in many environments and therefore needs to be coated in order to achieve a satisfactory life service. Small components can be painted, aluminized, electroplated, or clad with more corrosion resistant materials. For parts that also require wear strength, they can be thermally sprayed or coated with thin-films. Finally, when dealing with large components, the size, weight, and handling problems may limit the type of surface treatment to be considered. The aim of the research work presented in this PhD thesis was to study the interactions between the metal/ceramic and metal/metal coupling surfaces to improve the wear resistance of the materials in sliding motion. Most of my research work is included here as a collection of three papers submitted in the same format they were published or in a preprint version. Each paper is an individual piece of work with separate sections including: abstract, introduction, materials and experimental details, results and discussion, conclusions, and references. A failure analysis study was carried out on some specific mechanical components of diesel engines for industrial application. In order to increase the wear resistance of rocker arms, pushrods and valves, the deposition of ceramic coatings thermally sprayed was considered. Wear tests were performed on a plasma-sprayed ceramic coating in sliding motion against steel in order to understand the effect of a normal load applied, as well as the environmental conditions on the metal/ceramic coupling. Moreover, the influence of relative humidity on the tribological behaviour of two types of plasma-sprayed ceramic coatings and two types of HVOF-sprayed cermets in sliding motion against alumina, was evaluated through pin-on-disk testing. Different techniques for the microstructural examination were employed in this research study: Optical Microscopes (OM) and Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) microprobe were used and also X-ray Diffraction (XRD) was carried out to describe the morphology of worn surfaces and to identify the main wear mechanisms involved. In addition, surface roughness, Vickers microhardness and fracture toughness measurements were performed in order to characterise the materials subjected to wear testing.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Bonded joints are increasingly used in structural applications. However, widely accepted failure criteria remain unavailable for accurate design, in spite of the many studies reported. The present work aimed at contributing to the identification of such criteria. It involved single strap joints of stainless steel adherends bonded by the well-known araldit standard epoxy adhesive. Lap shear tests on conducted on joints with different adherend thicknesses and overlap lengths. In general, the results followed the expected trends, tough some anomalies were seen. The most likely causes were adhesive fillets and batch degradation. High scatter on joint strengths was observed, which was probably due to the adhesive failure mode and to the fact that the specimens tested involve two single-lap joints. Experimental results were compared to finite element analyses which considered elastic-plastic behaviour of adherends and adhesive. For the latter, however, it was only possible to adopt an elastic- perfectly plastic approximation obtained from bulk adhesive tests. This approximation was probably behind some discrepancies between experimental and numerical load-displacement curves. Finally, simulations and experimental results were combined in order to relate joint failure with the attainment of adhesive limit tensile and shear strains. No clear conclusions could be drawn, but some results did support such criteria.

Abstract:
This study aims synthesis of metal/polymer one dimensional nanostructures by micelle formation, reduction, and electrospinning route, and to analyze the morphological characteristics of composite nanofibers. The study was carried out in three main steps. First, the reverse micelle structures were established between the anionic surfactant and the metal ion. The surfactant acts as an agent to bind metal ions together so that the arrangements of metal ions can be controlled in the solution. As the surfactant concentration increases, reverse micelles grow and reverse wormlike micelle structures are observed. Wormlike micelles are elongated semi flexible aggregates which form a spherocylinder form repeating units. Metal ions are in the core and surrounded with the surfactant. The polymer attached to the wormlike structure acts as a shield and prevents phase separation in a hydrophilic medium. Different polymer and surfactant concentrations were tried to determine the optimum polymer and surfactant concentrations for reverse micelle formation. The size analyses of the reverse micelle structures were done by dynamic light scattering technique. In the second step, metal ions in the micelles were reduced by using hydrazine hydrate to obtain metal cores in the center of wormlike micelles. Finally, electrospinning was carried at room temperature and in air atmosphere. The characterization of nano composites was done by Scanning Electron Microscopy. It was found that the size of the reverse micelle structures affects the distribution of metal nano partices in polymer nano fibers. In order to distribute the metal nano particles homogeneously, the optimum size of reverse wormlike micelles was found to be between 420 and 450 nm.

Abstract:
Metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip replacement (THR) offered theoretical advantages of decreased wear and increased functional outcomes. MoM bearings have been associated with sterile inflammatory masses and significant soft tissue destruction with poorer outcomes following revision surgery. The natural history of adverse reactions to metal debris (ARMD) is unknown, but may represent contributions from bearing surface wear, taper junction wear, and corrosion. Immunological and genetic factors may influence susceptibility to development of ARMD. Between 1997 and 2004, 652 Ultima TPS THRs (DePuy) were implanted in 545 patients who went on to experience a high rate of early implant failure (13.8%). Management of these patients has evolved beyond regular clinical follow up with plain radiographs to include surveillance monitoring of trends in levels of blood metal ions and staging of disease using metal artefact reduction (MAR) MRI. This study investigated: • The natural history of ARMD in 28mm MoM THR using MAR MRI. • The possibility of diurnal variation of cobalt (Co) and chromium (Cr). • Differences in gene expression profiles of patients undergoing revision of a metal-on-polyethylene (MoP) THR for aseptic loosening and those with ARMD arising from MoM THR. In patients whose MARS MRI staging on initial scan is normal or where mild evidence of disease is demonstrated, further deterioration is unlikely. Where it does occur, the rate of deterioration is slow and there may be a latent period of many years. There is no diurnal variation in levels of cobalt (Co) in plasma or urine. There is diurnal variation in levels of plasma chromium, but this is not clinically significant. Patterns of gene expression in patients with aseptic loosening of a metal-onpolyethylene (MoP) THR, and patients with ARMD from a MoM THR investigated by a microarray experiment were found to be similar on a genome-wide level suggesting that they may share common factors in their aetiologies. These studies have helped to describe the natural history of ARMD on a cellular and radiological level, and have provided a contribution to the evidence base that will inform as to the optimum strategy for monitoring these patients before they develop catastrophic complications.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺東大學<br>兒童文學研究所<br>92<br>The Caldecott Medal, established by the American Library Association (ALA) in 1937, was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is one of the best-known awards for picture books in the United States, and the award-winning books are widely recognized as excellent and distinguished. Annually, ALA invites education scholars, art professionals, and librarians to make up a selection committee, which will choose a medal book and several honor books from those published during the preceding year. The award-winning books will be marked with a gold or silver foil seal on their covers. The illustration on the Caldecott Medal is taken from Caldecott''s illustrations for The Diverting Story of John Gilpin. The award criteria for the Caldecott Medal are detailed and unprecedented; what is more, artistic techniques and originality are emphasized very much. This award, therefore, has become the most influential award for American picture books. This thesis begins with a historical overview of the Caldecott Medal, including its origin, development, criteria, etc. Furthermore, it brings the main focus to the medal books from 1938 to 2003 and their illustrators in chronological order. This part tries to explore the characteristics of these medal books, with a discussion of such matters as illustrators’ backgrounds and experiences, their perspectives on creating picture books, and the artistic elements of the medal books. Finally, the list of Caldecott Medal winners shows great variety as to styles, media, and themes. In this way, the last part tries to analyze these elements by decade to conclude with the ways in which American picture books have changed over the past sixty-six years.

碩士<br>國立臺東大學<br>兒童文學研究所<br>98<br>The literary works of Newbery Medal award、which also cover racial issues、are quite influential to Children’s Literature worldwide. This study、referring to the literature below: Roll of Thunder、Hear My Cry、Dragonwings、Dragon’s Gate、Hattie Big Sky、Penny from Heaven and Kira-Kira、is to explore how Children’s Literature represents the racial issue that has been controversial for a long time、and speeches for the vulnerable races through the form of the novel. This study intends to cite postcolonial theory to probe the ethnic minority writers and their diaspora plus identity of the texts. While thoroughly studying these texts、most novels were found they are related to the historical matters and writers use American Dream as the theme of text. The writers、the immigratory descents、aim to recall the history and memories with their texts、and get closed to the homeland by writing. And、in the ending chapter of the individual novel it has the same result: Returning to 「Family」. The plots should match the model "Home–Away–Home". This model displays that the family is the final belonging to the bicultural ethnic minority writers. Family is the one that offers the supportive power. The works among them has two common characters: Family and Love. Family is considered a starting point. Love is the mainstream surrounding every plot. Following by the globalization、new immigrants are worldwide and the issue of diaspora and identity exists among the races. Overall、leaving is to find a better life、to start a glorious new life.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺東大學<br>兒童文學研究所<br>92<br>In history, the Chinese were almost negatively delineated and stereotyped in Western literature. According to Edward W. Said, the binary polarization is that the West is superior to the East in Western texts. Western writers are controlled by social ideology, represent consistent the Orient, and form the approbation to the culture of themselves through the Orient. As a researcher, I doubt whether there is similar phenomenon in Children’s literature or not? Did writers carry out latent Orientalism in the name of multicultural education? Since twenty century, realism was risen in America. Many writers of children’s literature have written novels about other culture in order to introduce multiculture. Take China for example, there are six ones about China in all Newbery Medal prize novels : Shen of the Sea, Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze, The House of Sixty Fathers, Dragonwings, Homesick: My Own Story, and Dragon’s Gate. The thesis adopts Edward W. Said’s theory “Orientalism” to discuss the image of China expressed in these novels. According to authors’ point of view, these texts show not only the common characteristic of human nature, but also the features of the Other. Moreover, I proceed from readers to study the interaction of characters, authors, and readers and reveal multi-faceted significance. In texts, because of the difference of characters, there are the clear contrast between the Western and the Chinese. Thus readers will have projection and get the identification of themselves. Due to the difference of author’s experience, it shows the diversity of texts. Readers have distinct response to the implied gaps of the text as a result of the readers’ background. Through the content of texts, I conclude the rules that writers form the similarities and differences, and ideology hidden among these novels.

博士<br>國立臺中教育大學<br>語文教育學系碩博士班<br>101<br>In the fictitious world of novels we can see certain truths of life. In this paper I take the feminist perspective supplemented with those of sociology and adolescent psychology to make a detailed textual analysis of the Chinese translations of several novels which have won the Newbery Medal. It was found that these novels do in fact provide a realistic depiction of female adolescence. In chapter 1 I explain the motivation and aim of the study, and the technical terms commonly used. I then present a review of the related literature, the methodology, and the scope and limitations of the study. In Chapter 2 I examine the difficulties typically faced by adolescent females due to family background, low self-esteem, and cultural constraints. In Chapter 3 I discuss the loss of personal autonomy which sets in motion the maturation process. In Chapter 4 I examine how adolescent women attain self-transcendence through transformations in self-image, self-awareness, and abilities. In Chapter 5 I discuss how adolescent women seek integration through subjective awareness, insight into life, emotional maturity, and overcoming alienation. In Chapter 6 I conclude by pointing out that in the process of growing up young women need to use both behavioral and psychological adaptation strategies to cope with the various types of challenges they meet in adolescence. Even though some of the characters don’t actually find a way out of their predicament, they are still able to come to terms with it on a psychological level. Finally, I emphasize that it is necessary for young women to give due consideration to both internal and external factors if they are to successfully complete the journey through adolescence.

Abstract:
<p>This dissertation explores the anomaly of Horn Island, Torres Strait, being classified a non -operational area during World War Two. It explains why this designation was wrong, and why it needed to be changed in order that the men and women who served there be accorded the recognition that they had been striving for since the war concluded. The concrete measure of that recognition comes in the form of the 1939- 1945 Star Medal. This prestigious award is for duty in an area that came under enemy attack during the Second World War, until 1993 restricted to those who served overseas. The dissertation plots the activities of Air Force and Army squadrons and units at Horn Island, both Australian and American, draws on an extensive bank of oral evidence, and focuses on the experiences of those who served there. Their histories portray what life was like at that Advanced Operational Airbase, and demonstrate the effect Horn Island service had on veterans. These are tangible demonstrations and are attested to by the fact that 60 years later the men and women have begun to return. They are being drawn back to their island of service, to walk in the steps of their youth, recapturing a past that will soon be lost to memory. Many bring their descendants to pass down their family's wartime heritage. On 26 October 2001 the 1939-1945 Star Medal finally was awarded to qualifying Tones Strait veterans, a decision that affected thousands of men, and a handful of women, who now hold the physical symbol that their wartime service has been acknowledged. However, for many other Horn Island veterans there is still unfinished business.  </p>

Abstract:
碩士<br>臺北巿立體育學院<br>運動科學研究所<br>91<br>Before Sydney Olympic Games 2000, some Olympic Athletes of Taiwan were tested positive in doping control. Between 1994 and 1997, more than 60% tested athletes for Taiwan Area Games had used some prohibited substances before the Games. More than 98% of 198 American Olympic Athletes surveyed in 1995 acknowledged that they would use the drugs for the reason to win an Olympic gold medal, even though these drugs may hazard their body and their life, which motivate the study on these areas. The study aims to identify how much the athletes, mostly students, understand and are aware of the doping control of sport. It is expected that the findings may provide references to authorities concerned. With 242 effective respondents from random sampling of medallists at the National Colleges/Universities Games and National Secondary Schools Games in 2001, the study focused on their recognition of doing control in sport, covering the areas such as the drug use, knowledge on anti-doing code in sport, their attitude toward doping in sport and understanding of any publicity on anti-doping in sport. The majority of respondents confirmed that they have heard about doping in sport, yet most of them only had vague understanding or even knew little about the subject. The sources for doping in sport mostly are from the coaches and teachers, only a small percentage of interviewees got information on doping in sport via Internet. More than half of the respondents had taken medicine, mainly for treatment on influenza, which normally are western medicine, under prescription issued by hospitals or clinics. About 15% of athletes acknowledged that they took medicine through other sources. Nonetheless, the rate of weightlifting athletes taking unknown medicines is distinct from other sports athletes. This should be noted. When asking if there was a substance that might enhance their performance to win Olympic gold medal within short period but harmful to their health, 83% more said they would definitely not take it, while 4 persons answered they would. The result is remarkably different from that as high as 98% of American Olympic athletes surveyed confirmed their use of it to improve their performance. Around 30% believed that the anti-doping education programs should be promoted in schools and only 10% considered Internet as an effective means. In conclusion, the study finds that Taiwan’s student athletes have limited knowledge on doping in sport and are not familiar with the said anti-doping code, although most of them heard about it. They also claimed that they would not take risk of using prohibited substances to enhance their performance for purpose of winning an Olympic gold medal. It is hoped that anti-doping programs should be included in educational materials in schools. The coaches play a key role in anti-doping by providing anti-doping related knowledge to student athletes on the one hand; they are also third party offering sources of doping-related medicine on the other hand. In future, the propaganda and survey relating to anti-doping shall be targeted to the coaches. There is a large room for improvements on propaganda or awareness relating anti-doping in sport at national level. It is suggested that the authorities concerned shall diversify the means for publicities and propaganda in order to raise awareness of athletes and coaches in doping control of sport.

It further analyzes the continuous development of competitive sports in China. Literature analytic is used in this research. The results discovered that the advantages that Russia has maintained have gradually shrunk, while the USA is still strong and China rose to keep up at very fast speed. So far they are the top three of first group in Olympic Games. China won seven medals in diving, gymnastics, shooting, weight lifting, badminton, table tennis and judo, which indicated a skill leading phenomenon and belonged to “economical” and “generally economical” categories. The USA excelled in track and field and swim, of which the winning medals have predominantly categorized into “physical force” and “most economical”. Russia won medal in gymnastics, ballet in water and wrestling, mainly in the “skill” and “most economical” categories. Also in the research it is discovered that in China female medalists are more than male medalists with the rate of 4 to 6; on the contrary, male medalists are the majority predominantly in the USA and Russia. As for the possibilities of consecutive medal winning in China, it is crucial that the event of major development should be recognized and established, and the priority will be “advantageous event”, “high competitive event”, “low competitive event” followed by “in developing event”. In the medals or scores, China made progress of medal winning no matter the event, ability, economical, or gender. And the possibility of China to winning the Olympic Games was increased.

Abstract:
碩士<br>臺北市立體育學院<br>競技運動訓練研究所<br>100<br>Adopting Electronic Scoring System (ESS) and amending rules of the game have changed Taekwondo players’ kicking techniques dramatically. For example, a player gets 3 points for a head kick, 1 point for an attack on the chest, and an extra point if combined with a back spinning heel kick. Purpose: To investigate the differences of scores and scoring patterns between medalists and other contestants of 2012 European Taekwondo Olympic Qualification Tournament. Methods: The video recordings of the 2012 European Taekwondo Olympic Qualification Tournament matches are reviewed and analyzed. The study focuses on both the male and female contestants in the Flyweight (Male under 58kg, and female under 47kg) and Lightweight (Male above 58 and under 68kg, and female above 47kg and under 57kg) classes. The contestants’ attacks are divided into four categories: (1) 1-point: punch, roundhouse kick, bandal Chagui; (2) 2-point: back kick, turning roundhouse kick; (3) 3-point: upper roundhouse kick, downward kick; (4) 4-point: turning upper roundhouse kick. Chi-squared test and independent sample t test are used to analyze the differences between winning and losing contestants’ kicking techniques. The significance level was set at p < .05. Results: Most of the medalists are very active and offensive, and their scoring techniques, including kicking technique, punch, roundhouse kick, bandal Chagui, upper roundhouse kick and turning kick, are significantly better than non-winners (p < .05). However, medalists’ kyong-go (half point warn) were significant higher than their opponents (p < .05). Conclusion: Due to the changes of new rules and the uses of Dae Do Electronic Scoring System, players have to be very active and offensive during a game in order to gain higher scores. When using more favorable kicking techniques, the players would more likely score higher than their opponents. In the 2012 London Olympics Game, players of team Chinese Taipei must be equipped with and use those favorable attack techniques to gain advantages.
