Abstract:
This study explores the history of the Toba Batak community in the city of Medan from1912 to 1965. The Toba Batak have traditionally lived in the rural interior highlands ofSumatra. In this region, their specific ethno-religious identity was developed. Thecrucial factor in the process was the activities and the theological convictions of theGerman Rhenish mission on which the Toba Batak themselves had a significant impact. During the first few decades of the 20th century the Toba Batak began to migrate to the plantation region on the east coast of Sumatra and its commercial entrepôt Medan. In this region, where the Malay Muslim culture was the local dominant culture, theystrove to fulfil their cultural ideals, among which the ideal of harajaon (kingdom) iscentral. The main analytical question pursued is: How did the Toba Batak ethno-religious identity develop in Medan, within the framework of the ethnic, religious, social andpolitical currents in the city? This question is analysed in terms of their changing relations to their area of origin, the interaction with other groups in Medan and the efforts of the Toba Batak to buildup their own organisations. The main focus is on the development of Christiancongregations, but the analysis also takes voluntary, political and women's organisationsinto account. The changing conditions for local ecumenical co-operation are alsoexplored. A wide selection of sources is used, such as missionary reports and correspondence, Dutch colonial records and Toba Batak written and oral sources. Most of these sources have not or only partly been employed in previous research.

Abstract:
The creation of an optimum environment to support educational goals is important to the success of a university. North Sumatera University (NSU) was born and grew for three decades without having been designed and controlled by a planning process. As a result it became a state university that: does not have a strong sense of identity; does not have a well-planned circulation system for pedestrian and vehicular traffic; does not have a coherent orderly, relaxing environment for those who work and study within it.In 1984 The minister of Education chose the university to become a pilot project for the development of universities in the west part of Indonesia. The university hired an architectural consultant (for whom the researcher worked as junior architect) to develop a master plan. The master plan was completed and approved in 1986. However, it is the opinion of the researcher that the proposed master plan is weak in addressing critical issue relating to landscaping, public areas, circulation system, organization of the campus facilities, and social relevance to the local communities. The North Sumatera University is located on the second biggest island in the country. NSU represents the National government's attempt to decentralize the education system from only the central province to the western and eastern areas. Most of the senior high school students from both provinces seeking college education are choosing prestigiousuniversities, currently in the central provinces. The goal of this creative project project was to illustrate opportunities for NSU to develop into a prestigious institution. Through creative and approriate re-design of the campus NSU can develop an attractive character and support strong ties with the community of Medan. This creative project redeveloped a comprehensive master plan for North Sumatera University, illustrated potential site design development and as well addressed possible concepts of campus management.

Abstract:
The age pattern of school entry reflects a complex social and empirical reality that is inadequately captured by a single number. Recognising these complexities in national and international research and policy discourse raises important but neglected questions around the identification of vulnerable groups, the relative value of pre-primary and primary education, as well as the normative powers and responsibilities of governments vis-à-vis parents, and the international educational community vis-à-vis both. This is illustrated by the example of Indonesia, where the official age norm for primary school entry is widely disregarded in practice, with a majority of children starting school one or even two years earlier. Crucially, it is the compliant children entering at the statutory age who tend to be from more disadvantaged households, and enjoy no benefit in educational outcomes from their greater maturity.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a disorder in the development of behavior and communication. From the 1940s through the 1960s, it was generally believed that people with autism had a conscious desire to withdraw from any social interaction. Most children with autism have difficulty with hearing, focus and speech. Children with autism are special children, where the way they learn and the space they need is different from the children in general. In addition to the role of parents and teachers was the role of study space is also very influential in the autism children learning system. According to Clinic Autism in Indonesia 1 in 250 children identified autism, in 2015 there are 12.800 children diagnosed autism and the number continues to grow every year. Knowledge about autism is still lacking in Indonesia, many parents do not understand and most of the families are not open to this issue, causes data collection process very difficult and effective data very limited. Autism Service Center in Medan, Indonesia is a general school specifically for children with ASD. Although the teaching programs are prepared for ASD children, the classrooms are not designed as needed for ASD children. As school must better understand the needs of children with ASD, a better understanding of the requirements and attributes of design guidelines is necessary. This research interviewed 30 student ages 6 to 9 years old and give them 7 questions by showing them 2 types of picture in every question and they need choose which picture that they prefer. These interventions can be delivered in various forms such as colors, shapes and lighting. The purpose of this study is to investigate the important role of color, shape and lighting of autism children learning room to improve the quality of learning. This research is a preliminary study to the problematic of design learning environments for school-aged children with ASD. Resulting data is expected to provide renovation design suggestions for classrooms to improve the comfortableness of learning space as well as the learning efficiency of ASD children.

Abstract This research started as a study about the street children in Indonesia, specifically in Medan, North Sumatra. As it went along, it turns to emphasize how my encoutnering with them shed a new light on my way of understanding what education should be. As a result the pedagogy of not-yet-known was brought to light. This ethnographic study explores the context within which street children became living and working on the street. In describing their experience on the street, this research paid attention to the activities they engage and the spaces where they hanged out. This study also examined the role that a NGO played, particularly its effort to educate street children. Five street children and their family members agreed to be interviewed. Detailed accounts and explanations of their past and present are explored and recorded in this thesis. The author developed a personal rapport with the street children who form part of this study. Most importantly, reflecting on her encountering with street children, the author proposes pedagogy of the not-yet-known, which place students’ life experience at the center of teaching and learning, and invited educators to go beyond what was already known and open themselves up to emergent difference in the other and in oneself. Keywords: Street children, life process on street, Medan, North Sumatra Indonesia.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the opening up of the Chinese socio-cultural sphere in post-Suharto Medan and Surabaya. Chinese Indonesians who strongly support Chinese ethnic and cultural identities have made use of the more liberal environment to establish Chinese-based organisations and Chinese-language newspapers. In general, these organisations and newspapers have made use of intra-ethnic linkages to safeguard Chinese ethnic and cultural identities, thus contributing to multiculturalism in post-Suharto Indonesia. The rise of China as an economic power has also prompted leaders of some Chinese organisations to utilise their intra-ethnic linkages and social networks in China to assist local governments in establishing cultural and business connections with China. Many indigenous Indonesians, however, perceive that the active role of Chinese organisations in promoting Chinese culture indicates an insistence upon separateness. At the same time, there are Chinese Indonesians who favour the integration of the Chinese into the wider Indonesian society and who have established non-ethnic-based socio-cultural organisations to promote cross-ethnic understanding and solidarity. On the whole, however, the socio-cultural activities and endeavours of Chinese organisations and Chinese-language newspapers have reproduced and perpetuated stereotypes of the Chinese as insular, opportunistic, and oriented towards China instead of Indonesia.

Abstract:
This chapter explains the objectives, theoretical framework, literature review, scope of research, methods of research, and chapterisation of this study. This study adopts a combination of Anthony Giddens’s structure-agency theory as well as Pierre Bourdieu’s notion of habitus and field as a framework for examining the strategies and tactics that Chinese Indonesians adopt to safeguard their business and personal interests as well as their ethnic and cultural identities in the post-Suharto era. Medan and Surabaya were selected as field sites for this study because both cities are economically and politically significant. Moreover, there are certain interesting contrasts in regard to their Chinese populations. The methods used in this research are library research, individual interviews, and participant observation.

Abstract:
This chapter aims to discover major constructs and proposing the model of platform ecosystems for Indonesia smart cities and applies the mixed methods research paradigm. The theory building uses inductive qualitative phase and literature review from global smart cities to suggest the hypothesized model. The pilot test has revealed a new construct “cultural systems” which is unique for the Indonesian context with high significance result. The final survey was followed by 1,021 respondents in six of Indonesia major cities, namely Medan, Jakarta, Semarang, Surabaya, Makassar, and Samarinda. The model testing in quantitative phase has investigated 12 hypotheses derived from the structural model. The investigation result reveals that 10 hypotheses are supported, and two hypotheses are rejected. Two constructs “political leadership” and “smart urban services” are confirmed to act as multiple mediating variables. The theoretical framework and propositions are claimed as the novelty of this research and extending the knowledge of urban sustainability.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the involvement of Chinese Indonesians in electoral politics in post-Suharto Medan and Surabaya and how this intersects with their stereotypical position as businesspeople. The opening up of a democratic environment in post-Suharto Indonesia has prompted many Chinese Indonesians to get involved in electoral politics. Some of them become electoral candidates in order to push for reform and positive changes in Indonesia and reject approaches of support for their campaigns in return for political and business favours. But there are also those who become actively involved in politics with the aim of gaining political protection for their business instead of fighting for the interests of the general public. Ironically, the latter often have a higher chance of getting elected, because of the increased cost of campaigning in direct elections introduced during the democratisation process. Their own wealth, or the willingness to accept support from corrupt businesspeople, often Chinese, ensures enough funds to obtain party support and to bribe voters. In this way, Chinese businesspeople continue to establish corrupt and patrimonial relationships with aspiring politicians in exchange for political favours for their business.
