Full textThis research concerns a particular aspect of the history of medicine : sphygmology or diagnosis by the palpation of pulses. Its origin, its evolution, its theories and its practices are analysed in distinctive ways in both cultural areas, Europe and China, until the junction of their medical knowledges. Then, the author explores the circumstances and modalities of the transmission of the Chinese sphygmology to Europe, principally in the 17e and 18e centuries, and its influence on the thought and on the techniques of the western physicians of that time. At last, he does a comparative study between the different aspects of this discipline, in both areas of civilisation, based on the doctrinal aspects, on the methods and on the interpretation of the signs of health and illness

Full textDuring the XVIIth and the XVIIlth centuries, in Europe, China was a fashionable subject. The social orders, from royal families to common people, devoted themselves to "Chinoiseries". Infatuation was universal. Similarly, the rare European passengers who made the long journey towards China, came back with passionate recites, which fascinated the European readers. These recites, as holders of the culture of an imaginary country, renewed European look, particularly in the field of the landscape and the art of gardens. This thesis aims at clarifying a convergence between Arcadian and Chinese sources in landscape garden in the XVIIith century. We try to analyse some descriptions of Chinese gardens in the letters of the European Jesuits during the XVIIth and the XVIIIth centuries, and to display how these ideas were passed on Europe in XVIIIth century, through the creation of a new style: the English landscape garden

Full textThe images, paintings show what is unexpected, surprising in the thought of the other, they help us to see and understand otherness. This research presents itself as a retrospective of the transformation of the Chinese thought through the works of three painters who seem to mark milestones in the history of encountering with the other: Guo Xi, Giuseppe Castiglione and Xu Beihong. The artworks serve as support for the discussion of culture and its transformation. In this sense Guo Xi will allow us to discuss the otherness of the Chinese painting and thought, Giuseppe Castiglione and Xu Beihong will help us to show how the European painting, which is the other for China, has transformed the visual field in China. However, a retrospective is inevitably anachronistic: by trying to locate painters in their own context, we always see them from the current situation. But this anachronism is at the same time the very point of interest of the research that aims to describe the encounter, heterogenization and globalisation as a long-term process. Heterogenization is understood as an enrichment of culture and globalisation is understood as a process in which cultures, Chinese and European, are in confrontation with one another. These two terms are the facets of the encounter between China and the West, which has profoundly affected modern history and is still ongoing. The objective of this work is to show where China is entering this process of globalisation and show the intermediate outcome of the confrontation of the Chinese painting with the European painting

Full textIn this study, we would like to catch, thanks to the exemple of china, the connection between erudition and imagination en eighteenth century french literature. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the jesuits played a very important role in spread of learned treatises upon china. This country was perceived as a learning-bounded country. Our purpose is to see how this conception of china took place in imaginative literature

Full textThis dissertation investigates the circulation of acupuncture knowledge between China, Korea and Japan, and between East Asia and Europe in the early modern period (16th century–19th century). In the first part, I analyze the sixteenth and seventeenth century revival of acupuncture focusing on Manase Dôsan (1507-1594) and the emergence of new indigenous theories and techniques. Using the archives of the Nagasaki trade and the transcript of the conversations between Chinese, Korean and Japanese physicians, I also identify the Chinese and Korean acupuncture textbooks transmitted to Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868), their reception by Japanese physicians, and the role geographical mobility played in the transmission of theoretical and tacit medical knowledge. In the second part, I first review the transmission of acupuncture and moxibustion to early modern Europe, and then I analyze their reception in the late eighteenth early nineteenth century France, focusing on the reasons of their sudden vogue in French hospitals, the way French physicians investigated these two therapies, and the reasons of their failure to deeply integrate medical practices

Full textOf all the great religious traditions Taoism is the least known. The aim of this research is to provide a panorama of its representations and its reception in the West, particularly in France and in Europe: to identify its stages of development and its modalities, its vectors and publics. This occurs at a pivotal moment when its spread in the West correlates with an inversion in terms of its public image from negative to positive. This work draws on missionary history, orientalism and sinology. It questions the role played by the various actors and contexts of reception in the fabric of its representations that essentialise a complex and evolving Chinese religious tradition. In a more socio-anthropological approach, this thesis analyzes contemporary modes of diffusion and appropriation through various practices of Chinese origin which respond to a contemporary souci de soi oriented towards individual realization within the world. Using a comparative approach that considers the reception of other Asian traditions in the West and of Taoism in the United States, this study seeks to identify the specific features of the construction of Western Taoism in a postmodern age. This manufacture of Taoism is situated within the movement of the internationalization and globalization of the religious phenomenon and of the dynamics of Anglo-Saxon liberal puritanism and New Age movements. These dynamics bring together the imperatives of well-being and self-realization, individual spiritual quest and questioning of European thought
