An extensive search algorithm has been exercised in order to identify Yb-doped laser crystals that possess the optical properties that are most amenable to pumping with InGaAs laser diode arrays. Numerous considerations arise in this context, including the magnitude of the absorption and emission cross sections and emission lifetimes, the nature of the 2F7/2 ground state crystal field splitting, the issues confronting the growth of high-quality samples, and the thermal, mechanical, and optical properties of the host medium. Yb-doped fluorapatite (Ca5(PO4)3F or FAP) has been found to uniquely p

We recently1 calculated the amount of squeezing predicted by our quantum theory of multiwave mixing for a one-photon two-level model. Here we use the corresponding theory for the two-photon two-level model,2 which allows for nonsaturating nondegenerate pump and probe waves and includes dynamic Stark shifts. We simplify the more complicated general model using a fourthorder perturbation limit and find very simple expressions that show even for very weak pumps with no Stark shifts or atomic detuning significant squeezing can be achieved. Much of this squeezing is due to scattering of the conjuga

Nowadays, social media platforms are frequently being used on the Internet. When the users create an account for these platforms, they are required to accept the data privacy policy. With the approval of the data policy, major problems may arise such as observing every activity of users on the platform, violations of security and protection of personal data, and sharing user data with third parties for commercial purposes. In this regard, it is significant to examine the privacy policies of social media platforms in detail. In this research, we examined the privacy policies of the five most po

Variations in the amplitude and phase of diffuse photon density waves is known to yield important information about the structural properties of turbid media, such as the scattering and absorption coefficients. Information on the dynamical properties of turbid media may be obtained from the temporal fluctuations of light fields emanating from the media. In this contribution, we demonstrate that variations in temporal correlation functions of the temporal intensity fluctuations of different speckles of light can be used to derive information about the spatially varying dynamical properties of t

Multiphoton transitions are of great interest in laser spectroscopy because they permit the study of new physical phenomena and because of their potential applications. Malcuit et al.1 studied two-photon transitions in atomic sodium and showed that for appropriate phase-matching four-wave mixing can overcome the usual spontaneous decay processes. We have recently developed a quantum theory2 to treat such multiwave mixing processes in two-photon media. Because of the greater complexity of two-photon transitions, many effects arise that are absent in the one-photon case, some of which have impor

The development of models for turbulent flows in porous media is an active area of research with diverse and practical applications. Following the steps to model turbulence in clear flows, porous media models have appeared in the last three decades to capture the turbulence phenomenon at macroscopic scales. The fact that, in the porous media approximation, we are representing a region of the space with single values, obligate us to introduce space-fluctuating quantities in addition to the time decomposition or Reynolds decomposition. This issue has yielded some controversies in the way that tu

The development of public relations as a profession is usually seen as a departure from unethical practices, which dominated for decades after the 1920s, towards strategically and ethically driven campaigns in modern business. Nevertheless, when looking at the PR practice in the first decades of the 21st century, numerous doubts arise regarding ethical dilemmas, problems, and, consequently, the process

Willis coupling, which couples the constitutive equations of an acoustical material, has been applied to acoustic metasurfaces with promising results. However, less is understood about Willis coupling in bulk media. In this paper a multiple-scales homogenization method is used to analyze the source and interpretation of Willis coupling in one-dimensional bulk media without any hidden degrees of freedom, or one-dimensional layered media. As expected from previous work, Willis coupling is shown to arise from geometric asymmetries, but is further shown to depend greatly on the measurement positio

Many challenges the world faces arise from broken behavioral systems: systems with multiple levels of interacting actors in which people make the best choices they can given their limitations. However, by doing so, they generate outcomes that no one actually wants. In these systems, people are embedded in a context that shapes their behavior. Their actions then shape both how the system behaves and the very set of choices that the individuals within it face, often in non-obvious ways. Once we start looking, it is not hard to find these broken behavioral systems: they arise in everything from f

Starting from Newton’s laws of motion and viscosity, this book is an introduction to fundamental aspects of fluid dynamics that are most relevant to groundwater scientists. Based on a perspective of driving versus resisting forces that govern the motion of a fluid, the author derives Darcy’s law for flow through porous media by drawing an analogy to Bernoulli’s law for fluid with negligible viscosity. By combining the effects of gravity and pressure, the author identifies hydraulic head as a convenient numerical quantity to represent the force driving groundwater flow. In contrast to the physi
