This thesis introduces 'Quickies', an attempt to bring one of the most useful inventions of the 20th century into the digital age: the ubiquitous sticky notes. Sticky notes help us manage our to-do lists, tag our objects and documents and capture short reminders or information that we may need in the near future. 'Quickies' enrich the experience of using sticky notes by allowing them to be tracked and managed more effectively. Quickies are sticky notes that have a digital duplicate and the ability to remind us about the task we ought to perform or to provide us at the right time with the information we captured in the past. The thesis explores how the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Natural Language Processing (NLP), RFID, and ink recognition technologies can make it possible to create intelligent sticky notes that can be searched, located, can send reminders and messages, and more broadly, can help us to seamlessly connect our physical and digital information worlds.

MobileEssence provides a light-weight, ubiquitous meeting capture tool which affords the user the ability to capture all important information, including recording what was just said, who said it, and what is being said at the moment. Traditional methods and tools for meeting information recording have often focused on the meeting-room as the nexus for useful information exchange. Instead, MobileEssence uses the mobile phone as a ubiquitous interface allowing notes to be captured anytime, anywhere while not requiring the user to change their focus. MobileEssence allows users to only record the important information and annotate this in real-time, instead of only allowing post-processing. We show that MobileEssence produces more effective meetings and post-meeting collaborations: User studies showed that users are not distracted by MobileEssence during meetings when compared to pen and pencil, and that they are better able to recollect events which were discussed during meetings.

At the Sherrill House Rehabilitation and Retirement Center in Boston, MA, music therapist Dianne Tow and her interns use a variety of therapeutic interventions to treat physical and psychological dysfunctions-though not every method has been supported by rigorous scientific research. With current technology in the fields of neuroscience and psychology, the effectiveness of most therapies is difficult to quantify. Most of the progress has been made for methodologies targeting physical limitations. The two therapies with the strongest documentation are rhythmic-auditory stimulation (RAS) gait training and melodic intonation therapy (MIT). RAS gait training is typically used to treat patients with Parkinson's disease or some kind of mobility loss caused by brain damage. Parkinson's disease attacks a person's motor system, and RAS gait training re-stimulates the motor system with music, specifically sound with rhythmic qualities. MIT is used to treat certain kinds of speech loss caused by brain damage in the left hemisphere. Speech is housed in specific organs, primarily in the left hemisphere, but music processing is dispersed throughout both halves of the brain. If the main language enter is compromised, the music neural network can be reworked through multiple therapeutic sessions to help relatively unused language centers in the right hemisphere to develop and grow the connections necessary to produce speech again. Other music therapies that target emotional and psychological dysfunctions appear to have positive effects, as observed by family members and therapists, but science is not yet satisfied. Human musicality and music's direct effects on our health remain mysterious, but the complexities that have been unraveled thus far with gait training and melodic intonation hold a positive note of hope for the future.

Abstract:

This study examinates technology's traumatic impact on the male subject in The Atrocity Exhibition by J.G. Ballard. In my analysis I show how the protagonist uses a fetischistic strategy in order to make sense of the trauma that technology embeds. Paradoxically it proves to be the agent of his trauma, but also functions as his shield. The machine is thus in a position of the hinge, the point in a structural system that both enables and deconstruct the system. In the same position we find the woman. She is the very epicentre of the novel and the violence directed towards her is part of a complex problem that I adress. The woman is divided into pieces and fetischized by the male gaze to serve as a solution for his trauma.

Hal Foster's notion ”the double logic of prosthesis” constitutes a theoretical base. The model shows how a fetischistic strategy is applied by avant-garde artists to solve the technological trauma that they experience. Both content and composition of The Atrocity Exhibition are inspired by avant-garde practices, I have therefore compared the text with Foster's theory on how the avant-garde problematized the interaction between man and machine. Marshall McLuhan's belief that the human body and technology are inseparable in the era of electronics further helps me to study technology's effect on perception.

Research states that reflection is the foundation for improved teaching (Dewey, 1933). As a result, educators have used many methods to facilitate teacher reflections. Some of these methods include keeping reflective journals, conducting peer teaching sessions, providing written feedback, giving lesson critiques, conducting action research projects, and using reflective conferences (Cook, Young & Evenson, 2001). As video has become more accessible, educators have also become interested in using video analysis tools to facilitate teacher reflections. However, very little has been published on how the use of video analysis tools influences teacher reflections. If reflection is the foundation for improved teaching, it is important for educators and researchers to understand how the use of these tools impacts teacher reflections. Therefore, the focus of this study was to understand the experience of a supervisor and student teacher as they used a video analysis tool to reflect on teaching. The researcher included thick descriptions of participants' experiences, so researchers and educators interested in using video analysis tools to facilitate reflection will be able to transfer the findings to their individual circumstances. This study compared a student teacher's experience reflecting with a video analysis tool to her experience participating in her department's traditional reflection method, which was a post-lesson conference with her supervisor. The researcher investigated how these reflection methods influenced the student teacher's ability to collect data about her teaching, make judgments about her teaching, design intervention plans for future teaching situations, and evaluate her intervention plans. The participants indicated that both video analysis and the traditional reflection method were beneficial for reflection. Although both methods were beneficial, the student teacher felt that using video analysis to reflect was more useful than the department's traditional reflection method for helping her understand the changes she wanted to make in her teaching. The student teacher felt that video analysis was more useful than the traditional reflection method because it allowed her to notice things that she did not remember or attend to during her lesson, it helped her focus her reflections on specific aspects of her teaching, and the video clips provided evidence to support her discussions with her supervisor.

La thèse sur travaux, intitulée THÉORIE DE LA DÉMARCHE, présente un ensemble de recherches et d’enquêtes autour du cinéma et de ses métamorphoses. La mutation technique du médium, sa dissémination dans l’espace social ont transformé nos usages. Nous continuons à appeler cinéma un médium désormais dissocié de son dispositif technologique. Il semble persister sous son avatar numérique à la manière d’une promesse, d’un fantôme ou d’un double. La série des travaux étudient cette transformation dans les relations du cinéma à l’art contemporain, son devenir performatif, ses marges et ses frontières. À la manière d’une histoire contre-factuelle, les travaux privilégient les figures oubliées, les impasses, les seuils, les trous noirs, les fantômes, les rencontres sans suite, les anachronismes. Un mémoire original est consacré aux relations de l’écrivain Raymond Roussel au cinéma, à la lumière des travaux sur le cinéma des premiers temps, l’archéologie des médias et le processus de remédiation. Under the general title of “THEORY OF WALKING”, this thesis presents a series of previous and new research around the metamorphoses of cinema. The technical mutation of the cinematographic medium, its dissemination in the social space, have transformed its usage. We continue to call cinema a medium now dissociated from its technological device. Cinema then seems to persist under his digital avatar like a promise, a specter or a double. The series of essays presented in this thesis scrutinize this transformation through the relations between cinema and contemporary art, the becoming-performance of the film, its margins and its borders. Following the genre of counter-factual history, the different essays gathered in the thesis focus on the forgotten figures, the dead ends, the thresholds, the black holes, the ghosts, the meetings without continuation, the anachronisms, that are at work in the recent history of cinema, and may account for its mutations. The thesis comprises an original memoir devoted to Raymond Roussel's relationship with cinema, developed in the light of early cinema studies, archeology of media and remediation process. If the cinema is absent, in the literal sense, from Roussel's work, he is still present by means of allusions to optical devices, to the cinema of attractions, and living cinema. Exploring this labyrinthic questioning, I wonder if cinema has become, because of its transformations and avatars, a “floating signifier”

Abstract:
The spread of infectious diseases can be described in terms of three interrelated components: interaction, movement, and scale. Transmission between individuals requires some form of interaction, which is dependent on the pathogen, to occur. Diseases spread through the movement of their hosts; they spread across many spatial scales from local neighborhoods to countries, or temporal scales from days to years, or periodic intervals. Prior research into the spread of disease have examined diffusion processes retrospectively at regional or country levels, or developed differential equation or simulation models of the dynamics of disease transmission. While some of the more recent models incorporate all three components, they are limited in the way they understand where interactions occur. The focus has been on home or work, including contact with family or coworkers. The models reflect a lack of knowledge about how transmissions are made at specific locations in time, so-called nodes of transmission. That is, how individuals’ intersections in time and space function in disease transmission. This project sought to use the three factors of interaction, movement, and scale to better understand the spread of disease in terms of the place of interaction called the node of transmission. The overarching objective of this research was: how can nodes of transmission be identified through individual activity spaces incorporating the three factors of infectious disease spread: interaction, movement, and scale? This objective fed into three main sub-objectives: defining nodes of transmission, developing an appropriate methodology to identifying nodes of transmission, and applying it using geotagged social media data from Twitter. To develop an appropriate framework, this research relied on time geography, and traditional disease. This particularly relied on the idea of bundling to create the nodes, and a nesting effect that integrated scale. The data source used to identify nodes of transmission was collected from Twitter for the Los Angeles County, USA, area from October 2015 to February 2016. Automated text classification was used to identify messages where users self-reported an influenza-like-illness. Different groupings were created that combined both the syndrome and the symptoms of influenza, and applied to the automated classification. The use of Twitter for small-area health analysis was evaluated along with different text classification methodologies. A space-time hierarchical clustering technique was adapted to be applied towards the twitter data in both identifying nodes of transmission and identifying spatiotemporal contact networks. This clustering data was applied to the classified Twitter data to look at where interaction between the classified users were occurring. This pointed to six nodes that were typically densely populated areas that saw the merging of large groups of people in Los Angeles (e.g. Disneyland and Hollywood Boulevard).The movement of these individuals were also examined by using a edit distance to compare their visits to different clusters and nodes.

Abstract:
This thesis presents an analysis of the relationship that exists between the use of place-specific information in mobile communication technologies and the different aspects of place-making and self-presentation in London. Through a study of empirical data collected from seven focus groups, during which a total of 38 participants were asked to draw sketch maps of London to shed light on social and spatial interactions in the urban space related to the proliferation of mobile communication technologies and their location-aware features. To this end, the development of locative media within specific types of location-aware mobile devices and services is shown to be intimately interrelated with different aspects of place-making and self-presentation in London. This thesis demonstrates that mobile and locative media serves as a platform through which the user can communicate different aspects of themselves and their relationship with specific places, while also constructing a sense of those places by sharing individual narratives of their everyday lives. Highlighting the significance of sharing and retrieving locational information through mobile and locative media, this study not only analyses the use of mobile and locative media in everyday life, but reflects also on how the perception of places is transformed as a result of social and spatial interactions, and the practices of sharing and remembering, as well as navigating. Employing a holistic approach in the framing and research of locative media, and introducing sketch-mapping as a creative methodology in the form of focus groups for a research into communication and media, this thesis makes an original contribution to existing literature, especially in the field of mobile and locative media.

In Next Generation Networks (NGN), also known as 4G, Beyond 3G, Converged, Integrated and Interworked Network, user node mobility in wireless and wired environments will seamlessly cross disparate network boundaries. The effort to offer ubiquitous computing, providing access to services anywhere and anytime, strongly encourages the ability to roam across the different existing and future networks. Literature shows investigation of concepts such as Always Best Connected (ABC) when heterogeneous networks co-exist , which will work or compete with other schemes like Home Network Default (HND), Compatibility and Network Operator Agreements (CNOA) to guide network selection or access . With the variety of available networks, the mobile node may be faced with having to decide which network to connect to. We concentrate on the network selection aspects of these envisaged mobile, overlay and integrated environment in heterogeneous networks. The standard developments by the IEEE802.21 Working group and the IETF Networking group form the base of our approach that seeks to see mobility across heterogeneous networks a reality. We propose an IEEE802.21 Media Independent Handover Function (MIHF) based network discovery and network selection, leading to a handover. The selection may be further assisted by an MIHF capable Broker Node that is Third party to the Network Providers to provide a central yet distributed database of the available networks as encountered by the Mobile Node, to cater for Nodes with no prior knowledge of networks and software repository. A Mobile Node (MN) in our solution uses 802.21 communication messages to obtain information about foreign networks encountered before selecting the networks to connect to. Our evaluation through simulations, shows that network selection in heterogeneous wireless networks environment for the appropriately equipped devices is greatly enhanced by the use of the Media Independent Handover Protocol. In scenarios where the mobile node has no prior knowledge of the encountered different network architectures, the use of a Broker node can, for an optimal number of available networks also greatly enhance the mobile node’s network selection by reducing the delay associated and the packet losses incurred.

La division cellulaire est composée de la mitose et la cytocinèse. Les deux processus doivent être coordonnés étroitement afin de garantir la stabilité du génome. La division cellulaire doit aussi s’équilibrer avec la croissance cellulaire pour que les cellules conservent une taille constante au cours des cycles successifs. La levure S. pombe est un organisme modèle simple très utilisé pour des études de cycle cellulaire et de cytocinèse. Dans ce modèle, nous avons focalisé ce travail de thèse sur les nœuds corticaux médians, des structures protéiques complexes, qui ont une fonction double dans l’engagement en mitose et dans le positionnement du plan de division. Les nœuds médians corticaux sont organisés par la kinase SAD Cdr2. Leur localisation et leur fonction sont régulées négativement pour la DYRK kinase Pom1 qui forme des gradients émanant des extrémités de la cellule. Les nœuds corticaux médians contiennent une voie d’inhibition pour Wee1 qui promeut l’entrée en mitose. Cette voie implique la kinase SAD Cdr1, un inhibiteur direct de Wee1 et pourrait coupler l’entrée en mitose à la taille de la cellule par levée progressive de l’inhibition exercée par Pom1 quand les cellules s’allongent. Cdr2 recrute aussi l’anillin Mid1 sur les nœuds corticaux médians ainsi qu’une série de composants additionnels, Blt1, Gef2, Nod1 et Klp8, pour former des précurseurs médians de l’anneau contractile de cytocinèse qui se compactent en un anneau fin pendant la mitose. La localisation médiane des nœuds, contrôlée négativement par les gradients polaires de Pom1 prédéfinit ainsi le plan de division au centre géométrique de la cellule. Dans la première partie de ma thèse, j’ai étudié la protéine des nœuds corticaux médians Blt1 dont la fonction restait énigmatique. Nous avons montré que Blt1 promeut une association robuste de Mid1 avec les nœuds corticaux. Blt1 interagit avec Mid1 via le RhoGEF Gef2 pour stabiliser les nœuds au cortex cellulaire durant les premiers stades de l’assemblage de l’anneau contractile. L’extrémité N-terminale de Blt1 est nécessaire à sa localisation ainsi qu’à sa fonction, tandis que son extrémité C-terminale favorise sa localisation au cortex en interagissant avec des phospholipides. Dans des cellules dans lesquelles ni Mid1 ni Blt1 ne peuvent s’attacher à la membrane, les nœuds se détachent du cortex et génèrent des anneaux contractiles de cytocinèse aberrants. Nous en avons conclu que Blt1 agit comme une protéine d’échafaudage pour les précurseurs de l’anneau contractile, et que Blt1 et Mid1 constituent des ancres membranaires redondantes pour le positionnement du plan de division. Dans une deuxième partie de ma thèse, j’ai étudié comment Cdr2 organise les différents composants des nœuds en voies fonctionnelles qui favorisent l’entrée en mitose et la division médiane. J’ai montré que l’interaction de Cdr2 avec Wee1 et Mid1 dépend du domaine UBA de Cdr2 de manière dépendante de l’activité kinase. En revanche, Cdr1 s’associe avec l’extrémité C-terminale de Cdr2, composée des domaines basique et KA1 d’association aux lipides membranaires. De manière intéressante, Mid1 interagit également avec l’extrémité C-terminale de Cdr2 et pourrait ponter les parties N- et C-terminales de Cdr2, alors que Blt1 s’associe à la région centrale de Cdr2. Nous faisons l’hypothèse que l’association des effecteurs de Cdr2 avec différents domaines de Cdr2 pourraient contraindre Cdr1 et Wee1 spatialement pour promouvoir l'inhibition de Wee1 quand la kinase Cdr2 est active
The aim of this PhD work is to bring a better understanding of the regulatory mechanism controlling cell division in space and time at the molecular level. Cell division is composed of mitosis and cytokinesis. Both processes need to be perfectly coordinated in order to guarantee genome integrity. Cell division also needs to be properly balanced with cell growth to maintain cell size constant during successive cell cycles. Temporal and spatial regulatory mechanisms ensure the coordination of these events. The fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe is a simple rod-shaped model organism well-known for cell cycle and cytokinesis studies. In this model, we focused the work of this thesis on the medial cortical nodes, complexe protein structures that have a dual role in mitotic commitment and in division plane positioning. Medial cortical nodes are organized by the SAD kinase Cdr2. Their localization and function is negatively regulated by the DYRK kinase Pom1 that forms a gradient emanating from the cell tips. Medial cortical nodes contain an inhibitory pathway for Wee1, promoting mitotic entry. This pathway involves the SAD kinase Cdr1, a direct inhibitor of Wee1 and has been proposed to couple mitotic entry to cell size by progressive alleviation of Pom1 inhibition when cells grow longer. Cdr2 also recruits to medial nodes the anillin Mid1 as well as a series of four additional components, Blt1, Gef2, Nod1 and Klp8, to form medial precursors for the cytokinetic contractile ring that compact into a tight ring during mitosis. Nodes medial localization, negatively controlled by Pom1 gradients, predefines thereby the division plane in the cell geometrical center. In a first part of my thesis, I studied the previously enigmatic cortical node protein Blt1. We showed that Blt1 promotes the robust association of Mid1 with cortical nodes. Blt1 interacts with Mid1 through the RhoGEF Gef2 to stabilize nodes at the cell cortex during the early stages of contractile ring assembly. The Blt1 N terminus is required for localization and function, while the Blt1 C terminus promotes cortical localization by interacting with phospholipids. In cells lacking membrane binding by both Mid1 and Blt1, nodes detach from the cell cortex and generate aberrant cytokinetic rings. We conclude that Blt1 acts as a scaffolding protein for precursors of the cytokinetic ring and that Blt1 and Mid1 provide overlapping membrane anchors for proper division plane positioning. In the second part of my thesis, I studied how Cdr2 scaffolds various nodes components to organize them in functional pathways promoting mitotic commitment and medial division. I showed that Cdr2 interaction with Wee1 and Mid1, depends on Cdr2 UBA domain in a kinase activity dependent manner. In contrast, Cdr1 associates with Cdr2 C-terminus composed of basic and KA-1 lipid-binding domains. Interestingly, Mid1 also interacts with Cdr2 C-terminus and may the bridge N- and C-terminal domains of Cdr2 while Blt1 associates with the central spacer region. We propose that the association of Cdr2 effectors with different Cdr2 domains may constrain Cdr1 and Wee1 spatially to promote Wee1 inhibition upon Cdr2 kinase activation

Esta tese apresenta uma análise discursiva das articulações e efeitos gerados pelos discursos feminista e jurídico, interrelacionados com a mídia. O feminismo teórico constitui uma fonte poderosa de análise, principalmente por mostrar o modo como a cultura constrói categorias e posições de sujeito - que assumimos como já-existentes, universais e imutáveis -, apontando para as contradições e os conflitos na articulação das ideologias na arena político-social; ele (o feminismo teórico) permite que as relações de poder bem como a resistência sejam reveladas. Como discurso oposicionista na sociedade patriarcal, a teoria feminista contribui para que haja um maior entendimento das relações sociais uma vez que lida com temas como igualdade, diferença, exclusão, marginalização e opressão. Desse modo, um dos principais objetivos dessa tese foi investigar, e desnudar, como se dá a articulação do discurso feminista e jurídico, tendo sido a mídia utilizada como meio para ilustrar tal articulação, a fim de que a nossa hipótese fosse comprovada. Mulher - termo aqui utilizado em sua concepção universalista e liberal - ainda ocupa uma posição subalterna (termo pós-colonialista) na sociedade patriarcal, mesmo quando a conjuntura pós-moderna afirma a inclusão (termo liberal) dela no mundo globalizado, uma vez que os discursos da contemporaneidade reproduzem modelos patriarcais de poder, apesar do avanço tecnológico e das previsões otimistas de que as mulheres estejam se liberando das estruturas patriarcais, de que os papéis sexuais e a noção de humano, do feminino e do masculino estão em transição, de que a igualdade dos gêneros já foi alcançada e, os modelos de linguagem, gêneros e sexualidade repensados. A conclusão principal é a de que o sistema jurídico, mesmo quando supostamente aplica os modelos teóricos da pós-modernidade/pós-estruturalismo, como na discussão sobre a flexibilização do direito - novas leis civis e criminais que se referem à igualdade, ou à diferença -, isto é, à proteção e à necessidade da inclusão das minorias nos discursos, como é o caso de mulher, na verdade, não consegue lidar com as questões dos gêneros sexuais e, conceitos como igualdade, liberdade, autonomia e, diferença, permanecem dentro de um modelo humanista e masculino, principalmente porque as teorias feministas, apesar de conceituadas globalmente são praticamente desconsideradas, inclusive aquelas que estudam as teorias e as práticas jurídicas, fazendo com que a análise seja empobrecida, pois somente um pólo continua a ser privilegiado: o masculino.
A discursive analysis of feminist and legal discourses articulations and effects intersected with the media is the main target of this thesis. Feminist theory constitute a powerful tool of analysis mainly because shows how culture construct categories e subject positions - universal and immutable givens - as an always already there, addressing ideologies contradictions and conflicts in the social-political arena which allows the uncovering of power relations and resistance. Feminist theory as a critique of patriarchy, thus a counter hegemonic discourse, contributes to a better understanding of the social relations mainly because it is concerned with questions related to equality, difference, justice, exclusion, marginalization, subordination and oppression. It was one of the main targets of this doctoral thesis, therefore, to investigate and uncover the intersections of feminist and legal discourses having the media illustrating this articulation in order to prove our hypothesis. Woman - term here used in its liberal (and universal) meaning - still occupies a subaltern (a postcolonial term) position into the patriarchal society even when the postmodern context account for its inclusion (a liberal term) into the globalized world, mostly because the contemporary discourses (re)produce patriarchal patterns of power, despite the optimistic forecasting of womens emancipation from the patriarchal structures of power, because of social and technological advancements, the understanding that gender roles and the meaning of human, feminine and masculine are in transition, that sexes equality was reached and patterns of language, gender and sexuality already rethought. The main conclusion is that law system, even when applying postmodernist/poststructuralist theoretical models, mainly in its discussion about the flexibilization or reconfiguration of the law and the minorities inclusion into the main stream discourses, such as the debates about women and the new criminal and civil laws regarding equality or difference, i. e. protection and inclusion, in fact, it cannot deal with issues related to gender mostly because conceptions such as equality, freedom, autonomy and mainly difference remain into a humanist frame, therefore, a masculine pattern, and feminisms or feminist theories, though recognized globally - including those which are directly related to the practice and theory of law - are basically disregarded, which impoverishes the law systems analysis because just one side continues to be privileged: the masculine side.

El País Fértil es una investigación que aborda el significado del proceso creativo específico de la arquitectura mediante su comparación con otras disciplinas artísticas. Esta premisa metodológica implica el reconocimiento del carácter artístico de la arquitectura. Insistir en la pertenencia de la arquitectura al campo del arte, algo que nadie cuestionaba, se vuelve hoy imprescindible en un contexto social y universitario que potencia excesivamente el peso del factor tecnológico en detrimento del artístico/humanístico. La idea del medio expresivo -el que diferencia a las artes- permite acercarse de modo original al concepto de "proporción", el principio proyectual abstracto con que la arquitectura construye su arte. Enseñar a diseñar arquitectura significa transmitir los mecanismos de la práxis arquitectónica, la esencia misma del proceso creativo -que todas las artes comparten-. Enseñar a diseñar, enseñar a proyectar, o enseñar a crear son diferentes expresiones de la materia que está en el origen de esta investigación. El proceso de proyecto que es necesario transmitir a los estudiantes de arquitectura es el conjunto de estrategias que permiten trabajar la imaginación -como actividad no acotada y sin límites- para que se convierta en productiva. De esta forma se reivindica una vez más el rol del dibujo de arquitectura como uno de los hilos conductores que permiten desplegar las infinitas posibilidades de una imaginación así concebida.
Siguiendo un proceso abierto, análogo al del proyecto arquitectónico, este trabajo descubre un campo fértil susceptible de evolucionar hacia nuevas y diferentes propuestas. Esa y no otra es su utilidad: sugerir otros paisajes para el área siempre experimental de la pedagogía de la arquitectura.

La relación entre el dibujo y el proyecto en las escuelas de arquitectura, suele guardar importantes similitudes con el proceso real de diseño que desarrollan los arquitectos. Para explorar esa hipótesis se concertaron una serie de conversaciones con destacados arquitectos y diseñadores que reflexionan sobre la relación entre experiencia docente y actividad profesional. Una selección de esas conversaciones integra el anexo que acompaña la tesis. En ellas se habla esencialmente del proceso de diseño, del proceso creativo. Un proceso común a todas las disciplinas de las cuales se espera que resuelvan problemas o necesidades, inventando algo nuevo, apoyadas en la singular potencia constructiva de la imaginación.

Cada capítulo va precedido por una "perspectiva", las reflexiones de un autor sobre su particular proceso creativo. Se trata de la recuperación de una serie de textos clásicos de la modernidad, algunos olvidados, pero todos completamente actuales, que ofrecen una visión particular sobre la relaciones entre diferentes artes y sus procesos de creación, en completa sintonía con las preocupaciones que dieron origen a esta investigación.
El País Fértil is an investigation focused in the specific meaning of the architectural creative process through comparison to other artistic disciplines. This research methodology is based on the premise that conceives architecture as an art. It is today essential to emphasize Architecture belonging to the realm of the fine arts, in a social context where technology has been converted in the main value against the artistic and humanities factors. The idea of the expressive medium -what differentiate arts- allows an original approach to the concept of "proportion", the abstract project principle architecture builds his art with. Teaching architectural design means transmitting the architectonic praxis, which is the essence of the creative progression shared by all arts. Teaching design, teaching project, or teaching to create are different expressions of the same subject which is on the root of this research. The project mechanism that needs to be transmitted to architecture students is the compendium of strategies that makes possible imagination works in the more productive way. Once again, architectural drawing is claimed the main driver to develop the unlimited possibilities of the power of imagination.
Following an open evolution, like in the architectural project, this study finds a fertile ground to evolve into new and unexpected proposals. Nothing would be more useful to suggest other landscapes for the always experimental area of architecture pedagogy.
The relationship between drawing and project has many affinities in architecture schools with the real design routines that architects use in their work. In order to explore this hypothesis a series of conversations with leading architects and designers were organized reflecting on both their teaching experience and professional activity. All of them talk mainly about the creative procedure, a common method to all disciplines expected to resolve problems or needs, inventing something new, supported by the unique imagination's constructive power.

Every chapter is preceded by a "perspective": the thinking of an artist on his personal creative way. This is the recovery of a series of beautiful modern classical texts, some forgotten, but even at the forefront nowadays. These documents can help to illuminate the search for answers to the concerns that gave rise to this investigation.

Abstract:
This descriptive, non-experimental study examines the strength of the relationship between California school library media programs and student achievement, using data from California criterion-referenced state-wide tests, publically available school and community demographic data, and a state survey of school library programs. Results indicate a substantial discrepancy in library staffing levels from the elementary grades through the high schools. Nevertheless, statistically significant correlations were found between certificated staffing levels and student achievement at each grade. Significant correlations persisted at the elementary and middle school when controlling for five of six school and community variables, and at the high school when controlling for all six of those variables. Bivariate correlations between total staffing and student achievement were significant at both the middle school and high school level when controlling for all school and community variables. Generally, the strength of the correlations between both certificated and total staffing tended to increase with grade level; at the high school level, correlations were among the strongest reported in any statewide study to date. There was a significant positive relationship between a majority of the 21 library services regularly provided and student achievement at all levels. Total library services were significantly related to student achievement at all levels when controlling for all school and community variables. In multiple regression analyses, there was an increasingly stronger relationship between total library programs and student achievement by grade level when controlling for all school and community variables. At every level, certificated and total staffing levels were associated with the strength of library program elements. The findings from this study confirm a host of prior research on the relationship between school libraries and student achievement and point to inequitable access to school library services in California. Results from this study might also provide a baseline of data for qualitative research that more deeply explores ways school library programs contribute to student achievement beyond ways measured by current standardized tests.

La presente disertación tuvo como objetivo analizar, por intermedio de fuentes documentales, las prácticas pedagógicas que pasaron el proceso educacional de resocialización en el Centro Educacional Regional São Lucas (CER São Lucas), localizado en la Municipalidad de São José/SC, durante el tiempo de los años 2007 a 2011, ocurridas mediante la escolarización y profesionalización de jóvenes que cumplían medida socioeducativa de internación. El São Lucas funcionó durante 37 años como la principal institución destinada a la reclusión y aplicación de pedagogías correctivas/coercitivas a los jóvenes en el Estado de Santa Catarina. El problema de la búsqueda estaba relacionada al funcionamiento de la institución y las posibilidades educacionales de una institución que aprisiona para educar. Precisamente, la pregunta a ser respondida es ¿¿Qué tipo de `pedagoga¿ motivaba el cotidiano violente, degradante y sin perspectivas del desenvolvimiento humano para los internos?¿ En virtud de la imposibilidad de una búsqueda etnográfica, pues el CER fue demolido en 2011, se optó por el método de análisis documental teniendo como fuente principal los registros oficiales producidos por la secretaria de Seguridad Pública de Santa Catarina y demás órganos provinciales, además de otros registros como reportajes de periódicos y fotografías. A partir del análisis de estas fuentes, fue posible correlacionar las prácticas educativas desenvueltas en el CER São Lucas a lo que dicen los referenciales teóricos que tratan este campo. Para esto, utilizamos, principalmente, las consideraciones de Michael Foucault sobre el objetivo de las prisiones y los reflejos que la actuación de estas instituciones producen en el medio social. En hipótesis inicial, se deslumbró que el fracaso institucional del CER São Lucas estaría directamente relacionado a la macro-estructura socio-política, que todavía no concibe la marginalidad y sus desdoblamientos como problemas de origen socio-económico. Siendo así, el cuestionamiento delictivo de manera general y, específicamente, de la delincuencia juvenil sigue siendo tratado a partir de un lado punitivo, lo que ha contribuido para el agravamiento del problema. Al cabo de las análisis, se buscó descortinar en lo que se traducía la violencia que pedagógicamente era imputada a los internos de la institución, concluyendo tratarse de una ¿pedagógica exceptiva¿, que era imputada sobre el individuo aprisionado. Se alega que aprisionar adolescentes, por tras del discurso del cuidado o de la resocialización, es una antigua práctica de control social que, con el pasar del tiempo, viene renovándose, a modo de atender las necesidades socio-económicas y políticas de la época. La sociedad se encuentra por delante de un camino sin salida, que puede ser, la existencia de instituciones disciplinares que normalizan adolescentes a través de prácticas punitivas, pero, dichas prácticas están endesacuerdo con lo que previene la letra de la Ley. La explicitación de la ¿pedagógica exceptiva¿ contribuyó para que el São Lucas fuera intermitido y demolido. ¿Será necesario otro?

A presente dissertação teve como objetivo analisar, por meio de fontes documentais, as práticas pedagógicas que permearam o processo educacional de ressocialização, mediante escolarização e profissionalização dos adolescentes que cumpriram medida socioeducativa de internação no Centro Educacional Regional São Lucas (CER São Lucas), localizado no município de São José - SC, no período entre os anos de 2007 e 2011. O São Lucas funcionou durante 37 anos como a principal instituição destinada à reclusão e aplicação de pedagogias corretivas/coercitivas a adolescentes no Estado de Santa Catarina. O problema de pesquisa esteve relacionado ao funcionamento e as possibilidades educativas de uma instituição que aprisionava para educar. Precisamente, a pergunta a ser respondia foi que tipo de ¿pedagogia¿ motivava o cotidiano violento, degradante e sem perspectivas de desenvolvimento humano que vigorava sobre os internos. Em virtude da impossibilidade de uma pesquisa etnográfica, pois o CER fora demolido em 2011, optou-se pelo método de análise documental, tendo como fontes, principalmente, os registros oficiais produzidos pela Secretaria de Segurança Pública de Santa Catarina e demais órgãos de Estado, além de outros registros como reportagens de jornais e fotografias. A partir da análise destas fontes foi possível correlacionar às práticas educativas desenvolvidas no CER São Lucas com o que indicam os referenciais teóricos que tratam desta seara. Para tal a pesquisa valeu-se, principalmente, das considerações de Michel Foucault sobre o objetivo das prisões e os reflexos que a atuação destas instituições produzem no meio social. Na hipótese inicial, aventou-se que o fracasso institucional do CER São Lucas estaria diretamente relacionado à macroestrutura sociopolítica, que ainda não concebe a marginalidade e os seus desdobramentos como problemas de origem socioeconômica. Assim, a questão da delinquência de maneira geral e especificamente a delinquência juvenil, permanece sendo tratada a partir de um viés punitivo o que tem contribuído para o agravamento do problema. No decorrer das análises buscou-se descortinar no que se traduzia a violência que pedagogicamente era imputada sobre os internos da instituição, concluindo se tratar de uma pedagogia de exceção. Alega-se que encarcerar adolescentes, sobre o discurso do cuidado ou da ressocialização é uma antiga prática de controle social, que com o passar do tempo tem se renovando, de modo a atender as necessidades socioeconômicas e políticas da época. A sociedade encontra-se diante de uma aporia, qual seja, a existência de instituições disciplinares que normatizam adolescentes através de práticas punitivas, porém tais práticas estão em desacordo com o que prevê a letra da Lei. Por isso, o São Lucas precisou ser interditado e demolido. Será que é preciso outro?

L’estudi de la presència i distribució dels contaminants orgànics persistents en el medi ambient és avui dia un tema de gran interès social degut als efectes nocius que aquests compostos provoquen en el organismes vius i a la seva capacitat per a bioacumular-se a través de la cadena tròfica. A més dels compostos que es troben en el llistat de substàncies perilloses del Conveni d’Estocolm (bifenils policlorats (PCBs), policlorodibenzo-p-dioxines i furans (PCDDs/Fs) i pesticides organoclorts), alguns que s’hi han afegit recentment (2009) com els polibromodifenil èters (PBDEs) o sulfonats de perfluorooctà, en els últims anys s’ha detectat en el medi ambient la presència de nous contaminants com les parafines clorades (CPs). Aquest fet, ha comportat que s’hagi proposat la seva inclusió en el llistat de compostos que s’estan avaluant per ser inclosos en el Conveni d’Estocolm i s’hagin inclòs en la directiva marc de l’aigua de la Unió Europea. Atès que la informació que es disposa actualment relativa a la seva presència i distribució en el medi ambient és encara limitada, és d’interès disposar de mètodes d’anàlisi ràpids i fiables que permetin la seva determinació amb una elevada sensibilitat i selectivitat L’objectiu principal d’aquesta tesis és el desenvolupament de metodologies analítica per a l’anàlisi de CPs i d’altres contaminants orgànics persistents per tal de estudiar la seva presència i distribució en mostres ambientals i alimentàries. En una primera part de la tesi s’ha estudiat l’aplicabilitat de l’extracció assistida per microones com a alternativa a les tècniques d’extracció tradicional per l’anàlisi de CPs en mostres de sediments, per tal de disposar d’un mètode ràpid i senzill per l’anàlisi d’aquest compostos en matrius abiòtiques d’elevada complexitat. Tanmateix, s’ha avaluat l’aplicabilitat d’un mètode multi-component per l’anàlisi de mescles de CPs i d’altres famílies de contaminants, com les PCDD/Fs, els PCBs i els PBDEs, en mostres de bivalves i peixos destinats al consum humà. En ambdós casos, els mètodes s’han aplicat a l’anàlisi de CPs i altres contaminants en sediments d’origen fluvial i marí fortament influenciats per l’activitat industrial i en productes del mar procedents d’àrees d’especial interès pesquer i ecològic, com és el Delta de l’Ebre. En una segona part d’aquesta tesi s’ha estudiat l’aplicabilitat de la cromatografia de gasos multidimensional integrada (GCxGC) per a la separació i caracterització de mescles de CPs i la seva determinació en mostres ambientals. Amb aquest objectiu, en primer lloc es van estudiar diferents combinacions de columnes en les dues dimensions per tal d’aconseguir la màxima separació entre els components de les mescles i estudiar la seva composició i naturalesa. En segon lloc, es va desenvolupar un mètode GCxGC acoblat amb un espectròmetre de masses amb analitzador de temps de vol (TOF-MS) per dur a terme la identificació i quantificació de les CPs en mostres ambientals. Per altra banda, s’ha avaluat la capacitat de la GCxGC en l’anàlisi de CPs i d’altres contaminants, com els PCBs i els PBDEs, en mostres de sediments per tal de disposar d’un mètode ràpid i fiable per a la determinació conjunta d’aquestes tres famílies de compostos. Finalment, en aquesta tesi s’ha estudiat l’aplicabilitat de l’acoblament GCxGC-MS amb analitzador quadrupolar com a alternativa al TOF, per a l’anàlisi de mescles de CPs. En aquest sentit s’ha pogut demostrar la idoneïtat d’aquest tipus d’analitzador, treballant en condicions que proporciona la màxima velocitat d’adquisició sense perdre informació espectral, ja que permet acostar-se a les prestacions del TOF i, en conseqüència, es pot utilitzar per l’anàlisi i caracterització de mescles de CPs i d’altres famílies de contaminants.
Today, the study of the presence and distribution of the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the environment is a matter of social interest since these compounds cause harmful effects on living organisms and exhibit a high capacity to bioaccumulate through the trophic chain. In recent years, new persistent pollutants, such as chlorinated paraffins (CPs), have been detected in the environment. These compounds show similar characteristics and properties than those included into the Stockholm Convention list, the initial one with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), organochlorinated pesticides, and also those added later (2009), such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) or perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). As a consequence, CPs have been proposed to be included into the POP list of the Stockholm Convention and are considered as priority substances by the Oslo and Paris Commission (OSPAR). Moreover, they have been included in the list of priority hazardous substances in the field of water policy of the European Union (Directive 2002/45/EC). Since information about the levels and distribution of CPs in environment is still limited and the characterization and quantification of CP mixtures is a complex task, there is a need to dispose of reliable, sensitive and selective analytical methods for their determination in environmental matrices. The aim of this work is double, on the one hand the development of methodologies for the analysis and characterization of CPs and on the other, the study of their presence and distribution in environmental and food samples.

La recerca analitza les principals transformacions digitals de la CCMA (TVC i Catalunya Ràdio) pel que fa a l’evolució de la seva audiència (lineal, digital i social), les rutines professionals dels gestors digitals i socials d’ambdós mitjans entre 2014 i 2018 i les oportunitats de futur per a la corporació. Per a l'anàlisi s'ha disposat una metodologia que combina l'explotació quantitativa de totes les dades d'audiència disponibles per als àmbits especificats, així com el desenvolupament i l'aplicació de matrius d'anàlisi pròpies, l'explotació qualitativa a través d'entrevista en profunditat als gestors digitals de TVC i de Catalunya Ràdio i l'enquesta prospectiva a experts estatals i nacionals en el sector de la comunicació. Aquesta metodologia, amb l'excepció del panell d'experts, s'ha aplicat a una mostra representativa de 34 programes de TVC i de Catalunya Ràdio. Les conclusions revelen que la CCMA adreça constantment els reptes que es deriven d’una estructura audiovisual en constant canvi. Tot i això, els resultats plantegen importants reptes per als seus mitjans quant a l’envelliment del perfil de públic a tots els àmbits i per a la majoria de programes examinats. D’altra banda, la necessitat de plantejar estratègies digitals que tinguin en compte una transformació accelerada de les rutines professionals on trobem un procés complex de transició entre la cultura professional lineal i digital. Finalment, els experts consultats consideren que la corporació encara pot assolir el seu màxim potencial a l’àmbit digital, tot i que són conscients que les circumstàncies actuals plantegen obstacles per a revertir les tendències de consum i modificar l’estructura professionals segons les necessitats que es van detectar.
This research analyzes the main digital transformations of CCMA (TVC and Catalunya Ràdio) related to the evolution of its audience (linear, digital and social), the digital and social managers’ professional routines of each media between 2014 and 2018, and the future challenges fort this public corporation. For the analysis, we set a methodology that combines a quantitative exploitation of all available audience data for each environment, the development and application of our own matrix, a qualitative analysis through an in-depth interview (digital and social managers) and a prospective survey to national and state experts in the communication sector. All this methodology, except for the expert panel, have been applied to a representative sample of 34 TVC and Catalunya Ràdio programs. The findings reveal that the CCMA steadfastly addresses the challenges that arise from a constantly changing audiovisual market. However, the results present important challenges for their media regarding the aging of the public profile in all areas and for most examined programs. On the other hand, the need to formulate digital strategies that consider an accelerated transformation of professional routines where we find a complex process of transition between linear and digital professional culture. Finally, the experts consider that the Corporation can still reach its maximum potential in the digital field, although they are aware that the current circumstances pose obstacles to reverse the tendencies of consumption and to change the state of the professional structure that we have detected.

Este trabajo, inserto dentro de la literatura que revisa los incentivos de los alumnos frente a las notas, busca entregar evidencia de cómo entre el 2013 y el 2014 un grupo de alumnos buscó mejorar su puntaje PSU cambiándose a un colegio menos exigente donde tendrían una mejor bonificación a través del sistema ranking. Para esto realicé un análisis en base a estadística descriptiva, que permitiera encontrar diferencias producidas exclusivamente por la inclusión del ranking. Para lo anterior hice una comparación de lo que ocurrió con distintas variables como la tasa de cambio de colegio o los promedios generales para distintos grupos de alumnos divididos entre los que se relacionan con los mejores veinte colegios municipales y los que no. La principal limitación de este trabajo es que el efecto se vio principalmente entre 2013 y 2014, y no existen datos para 2015 aún, por lo que solo se puede ver un efecto significativo para un periodo. Un resultado más completo incluiría más periodos donde este efecto se produjo, pero para estoy hay que esperar más datos.

Though the field of dramaturgy is growing in size and scope in professional theatre, there are relatively few universities or colleges that offer undergraduate or graduate degrees in basic dramaturgical theory and practice. Brigham Young University (BYU) is an ideal setting for the development of such a program. There is a close community within and surrounding the university; the Theatre and Media Arts Department has high pedagogical expectations; and the Theatre program provides multiple opportunities for theatrical production. I saw these qualities as an invitation to develop a dramaturgy emphasis for undergraduate students that would allow them to network with the community and build intellectual skills that could be integrated into artistic performance. In order to create this emphasis, courses and protocol needed to be developed in order to establish a model dramaturgical procedure for undergraduate training. La tesis se encarga de analizar, por un lado, la integración y el desarrollo de las nuevas tecnologías en la Administración de Justicia; y, por otro, los parámetros que constituyen la validez y eficacia del documento electrónico.
La primera cuestión se centra en la configuración de los Sistemas de Información de la Oficina Judicial y del Ministerio Fiscal, así como de la informatización de los Registros Civiles, donde el art. 230 LOPJ es la pieza clave. Se estudian sus programas, aplicaciones, la videoconferencia, los ficheros judiciales y las redes de telecomunicaciones que poseen la cobertura de la firma electrónica reconocida, donde cobran gran relevancia los convenios de colaboración tecnológica. La digitalización de las vistas quizá sea una de las cuestiones con más trascendencia, teniendo en cuenta que el juicio es el acto que culmina el proceso. Aunque no todos los proyectos adoptados en el ámbito de la e.justicia se han desarrollado de forma integral, ni han llegado a la totalidad de los órganos judiciales. El objetivo final es lograr una Justicia más ágil y de calidad, a lo cual aspira el Plan Estratégico de Modernización de la Justicia 2009-2012 aprobado recientemente.
En referencia a la segunda perspectiva, no cabe duda que el Ordenamiento jurídico y los tribunales, en el ámbito de la justicia material, otorgan plena validez y eficacia al documento electrónico. Nuestra línea de investigación se justifica porque cada vez son más los procesos que incorporan soportes electrónicos de todo tipo, ya sea al plantearse la acción o posteriormente como medio de prueba (art. 299.2 LEC). Entre otros temas examinamos el documento informático, la problemática que rodea al fax, los sistemas de videograbación y el contrato electrónico.
La tesi s'encarrega d'analitzar, per una part, la integració i el desenvolupament de les noves tecnologies dins l´Administració de Justícia; i, per l'altra, els paràmetres que constitueixen la validesa i l'eficàcia del document electrònic.
La primera qüestió es centra en la configuració dels Sistemes d´Informació de l´Oficina Judicial i del Ministeri Fiscal, així com de la informatització dels Registres Civils, on l'art. 230 LOPJ es la peça clau. S'estudien els seus programes, aplicacions, la videoconferència, el fitxers judicials i les xarxes de telecomunicacions que tenen la cobertura de la firma electrònica reconeguda, on cobren gran rellevància els convenis de col·laboració tecnològica. La digitalització de les vistes tal vegada sigui una de les qüestions amb més transcendència, tenint amb compte que el judici es l'acte que culmina el procés. Però no tots el projectes adoptats en l'àmbit de la e.justicia s'han desenvolupat d'una manera integral ni han arribat a la totalitat dels òrgans judicials. L'objectiu final es assolir una Justícia més àgil i de qualitat, al que aspira el Pla Estratègic de Modernització de la Justícia 2009-2012 aprovat recentment.

The thesis seeks to analyse, on the one hand, the integration and development of the new technologies in the Administration of Justice; and, on the other, the parameters which constitute the validity and efficiency of the electronic document.
The first question centres on the configuration of the Information Systems of the Judicial Office and the Public Prosecutor, as well as the computerisation of the Civil Registers, where the art. 230 LOPJ it's the part key. Their programmes, applications, the Video Conferencing, the judicial registers and the telecommunication networks which are covered by the recognised electronic signatures, are studied, where the agreements on technological collaboration gain great relevance. The digitalisation of evidence might perhaps be one of the questions with most consequence, bearing in mind that the judgment is the act by which the process is culminated. Although not all the projects adopted within the compass of e.justice have developed completely nor have reached all the judicial organs. The final objective is to achieve an agile, quality Justice, to which the recently approved Strategic Plan for the Modernisation of Justice aspires.
With reference to the second perspective, there is no doubt that the juridical Ordinance and the tribunals within the compass of material justice grant full validity and efficacy to the electronic document. Our line of investigation is justified because there are more and more processes which are sustained by electronic supports of all kinds, whether it be at the establishment of the action or later, as a proof of it (art. 299.2 LEC). Amongst other things, we examine the computerised document, the problems which surround the fax, the systems for video recording and the electronic contract.

Este estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar o efeito do envelhecimento posterior à meia-idade sobre a produção oral de nomes comuns. Esta etapa do envelhecimento foi operacionalizada comparando o desempenho numa tarefa de nomeação por confronto (acertos e latências) de dois grupos etários, um composto por indivíduos com idades compreendidas entre os 40 e os 55 anos e outro com idades entre os 65 e 80 anos. Os dados foram analisados de forma a identificar a presença (i) de efeitos diretos do grupo etário sobre a qualidade do desempenho na tarefa de nomeação; (ii) de eventuais interações desse efeito com o de variáveis caracterizadoras da designação da imagem a nomear (categoria semântica, frequência de uso e extensão da palavra); (iii) de mediação dos efeitos do grupo etário através de variáveis cognitivas não-linguísticas (velocidade de processamento, memória de trabalho e inibição). Além de efeitos já esperados associados à frequência, extensão e categoria semântica das palavras-alvo, que não envolveram o grupo etário, verificou-se também uma interação tendencialmente significativa entre o grupo etário e a categoria semântica das palavras-alvo, apresentado o grupo etário mais idoso um desempenho inferior ao mais jovem, quanto ao número de acertos, apenas para os itens da categoria semântica “seres vivos”. Verificou-se uma interação significativa entre grupo etário e extensão das palavras, sendo o grupo mais jovem, mas não o mais idoso, mais rápido na nomeação de itens com nomes curtos do que na daqueles com nomes longos. O efeito do grupo etário sobre os acertos na nomeação de imagens de seres vivos e a diferença entre latências para palavras longas e curtas foi estudado através de regressões hierárquicas, procurando apurar se, eventualmente, esse efeito seria total ou parcialmente mediado pela memória de trabalho, velocidade de processamento e inibição. Apurou-se que o efeito em causa seria totalmente mediado pela diminuição, no grupo mais idoso, da velocidade de processamento, em ambos os estudos. No caso da diferença entre latências para palavras longas e curtas, este resultado é interpretado como decorrente de uma lentificação cognitiva geral, refletindo-se principalmente ao nível do processamento do item lexical a ser articulado, levando à ausência de benefício da extensão (i.e., não têm latências inferiores quando se trata de palavras curtas), ao contrário do que acontece no grupo de meia-idade. Para explicar a proporção de acertos inferiores, no grupo de idosos, nos itens da categoria “seres vivos”, propomos que a mediação pela velocidade de processamento se faça sentir em virtude da diminuição da capacidade de processamento visual e da estrutura mais complexa destes itens (quando comparados com itens da categoria semântica “não-vivo”).
This study aimed to characterize the aging effect, after middle-age, in the oral production of common names. This aging stage was operationalized comparing the performance in a confrontational naming task (considering accuracy and latency) of two age groups – one composed by individuals with ages ranging from 40 to 55 years old and another with ages ranging from 65 to 80 year old. The data obtained was analyzed to identify the presence of (i) direct effects of the age group in the quality of the naming task performance; (ii) of a possible interactions of this effect with variables that characterize the name of the image to be designated (semantic category, frequency and length of the word); (iii) of the mediation of the age group effect through non-linguistic cognitive variables (processing speed, working memory and inhibition). Beyond the effects already expected associated with frequency, length and semantic category of the target word, that did not involve the age group, we also verified an interaction that tends to be significant between age group and semantic category of the target word, where the older group had a poorer performance than the younger group, in terms of accuracy, only for the items of the “living” semantic category. We also observed a significant interaction between age groups and word’s length, where the younger group was quicker naming items with short names and slower naming items with longer names, but this was not verified in the older group. The age group effect in the image naming accuracy of living items and the difference between latency for long and short words were studied through hierarchical regressions, seeking to determine if, eventually, this effect would be completely or partially mediated by the working memory, speed processing and inhibition. We discovered that such effect would be completely mediated by the decrease, in the older group, of the processing speed, in both studies. In case of difference between latencies for short and long words, this result is interpreted as resulting from a general cognitive slowing, reflecting mainly the processing level of the lexical item to be articulated, leading to a lack of benefit of length (the latency is not lower in short words), unlike what happens in middle age group. To explain the lower accuracy in the older group, in the semantic category “living”, we suggest that mediation by the processing speed is due to the decrease of visual processing capacity and the complex structure of those items (compared with items of the “non-living” semantic category).

This thesis presents an investigation into the effect of Liberated Learning Technology (LLP) on academic listening comprehension, notetaking and listening strategies in an English as a foreign language context (L2). Two studies are reported: an exploratory study and subsequent main study. The exploratory study was undertaken to determine L2 and native speaker (L1) students' perceptions on the effectiveness of the technology on academic listening and notetaking. The main study took a more focused approach and as a result, extended the exploratory study that was done in an authentic lecture context in order to gather data to measure listening comprehension and notetaking quality. The participants in the main study comprised six L2 students: five of whom intended to go to university. The methodology was a multimethod one: data was gathered from notetaking samples, protocol analysis, email responses and a questionnaire. Results indicated that continuous speech recognition (CSR) has the potential to support the listening comprehension and notetaking abilities of L2 students as well as facilitate metacognitive listening strategy use and enhance affective factors in academic listening. However, it is important to note that as CSR is an innovative technology, it first needs to meet a number of challenges before its full potential can be realized. Consequently, recommendations for future research and potential innovative uses for the technology are discussed. This thesis contributes to L2 academic listening and notetaking measurement in two areas: 1. the measurement of LLP-supported notetaking; and, 2. the measurement of LLP-supported academic listening comprehension.

Jazz music is transmitted by aural and oral means. As recording and broadcast mediums became increasingly ubiquitous, starting in the mid twentieth-century, an ever greater proportion of jazz’s aural transmission would be mediated by these developing technologies. Many commentators address sound’s mediation from one state to another by identifying the resulting recording as an object. This object transcends temporal and spacial proximity, possessing inherent authority with implications for authorship, related work-concepts, and even issues of cultural assimilation. From a perspective informed by writings in musicology, philosophy, and sound studies, I examine recorded jazz music from the twentieth-century. I begin by positioning the history of jazz music in relation to the emergence of recording technologies to establish recordings as authoritative texts. I then translate (by transcription) primarily non-literate jazz recordings into the primarily literate discourse of musicology. In the course of examining music by James Moody, Eddie Jefferson, Bud Powell, Chick Corea, and others, I conclude that they all exemplify musical intertextuality. In some cases, technological mediation connects the texts. I then turn to an examination of recordings specifically. I begin by questioning musical notation as an adequate description of sound and move to developing a broader analytical framework. This thesis culminates with a comparison of Bud Powell’s 1949 recording of Bouncin’ With Bud and Chick Corea’s 1997 recording. Using the framework mentioned, disparate potentialities afforded by each recording’s mediation are connected to musical characteristics.
