Abstract:

The issues of media concentration have currently been quite often the topic of public discussion and the subject of study of many analysts and publicists. The fact that the processes of concentration in recent decades are beginning to acquire a global character is first of all evidenced by the creation of large transnational media corporations, which are already showing a desire for international domination in a particular area of the media business. In addition, media owners from developed countries are actively expanding into the information markets of developing countries. Given the global impact of information technology on the entire socio-economic space, it seems necessary to define the concept of information globalization, to assess the scale of information shifts in the modern media economy. The relevance of this study is due to the need for a scientific understanding of concentration and diversification as forms of organizing media business in the context of globalization. Researchers identify globalization, convergence, glocalization, demassification, and diversification as the main trends characterizing the development of modern mass media.The purpose of this article is to characterize the processes of globalization in the communication industry that have influenced changes in the structure of the media market to describe the models of diversification and mutual integration of holding media.The theoretical and methodological basis of the work was formed by conceptual provisions, recommendations, and conclusions presented in the fundamental scientific works of domestic researchers on history, theory, typology, research methods of the Russian media industry (E. L. Vartanova, S. M. Gurevich, E. Ch. Andrunas, S. I. Beglov, S. S. Smirnov). When writing this article, we used the methods of system analysis, as well as expert analytical, descriptive, historical and theoretical methods.Conclusions. Globalization of information space, as an inevitable and extremely important phenomenon, affects all spheres of the socio-economic life of society, changing the motivation of economic actors at the micro level and modifying the macroeconomics in general.

In this paper, I focus on the study of the relationships between technological specificity and media mix, focusing on how anime, as a visual medium, is connected to other media. There are two main aspects to this paper: the study of the complexities of the visual media milieu in the age of media mix, taking into account the technological materiality of different channels of production and consumption, and the study of the way these complexities must be approached. Taking materiality and information as the key aspects of the way specific objects in media are interconnected, I explore a question that has appeared recently in media studies: what is the right way to approach the relationships between media?

Abstract:

In computational linguistics, specificity quantifies how much detail is engaged in text. It is an important characteristic of speaker intention and language style, and is useful in NLP applications such as summarization and argumentation mining. Yet to date, expert-annotated data for sentence-level specificity are scarce and confined to the news genre. In addition, systems that predict sentence specificity are classifiers trained to produce binary labels (general or specific).We collect a dataset of over 7,000 tweets annotated with specificity on a fine-grained scale. Using this dataset, we train a supervised regression model that accurately estimates specificity in social media posts, reaching a mean absolute error of 0.3578 (for ratings on a scale of 1-5) and 0.73 Pearson correlation, significantly improving over baselines and previous sentence specificity prediction systems. We also present the first large-scale study revealing the social, temporal and mental health factors underlying language specificity on social media.

Abstract:

The article summarizes information on the concepts «media education», «media literacy» and «media competence». The author emphasizes that foreign language teachers ought to be media literate, media competent, be able to use the means of media education, and teach students to create their own media space. Based on the analysis of scientific achievements of domestic and foreign researchers in the field of media education, the essential features of media literacy and media competence as important characteristics of the result of media education of pupils and students are revealed. It has been proven that foreign language teachers’ media competence is related to the development of skills of media immunity, reflection and critical thinking as psychological mechanisms of media literacy, which provide conscious consumption of media products based on effective media orientation, adequate evaluation of information in foreign languages. The relevance of the use of educational media products in the foreign language teachers’ professional activity is determined. The conditions for the formation of foreign language teachers’ media competence are revealed – the desire for self-improvement, clear internal motivation, the availability of relevant knowledge in the field of media education, involvement in practical activities to evaluate media texts and create one’s own media products.

Abstract:

The situation of uncertainty, which became a consequence of the pandemic, forced the audience to actively interact with the media. This effect is especially noticeable in the field of video information. Because of this, the ability to check the quality of such information and to detect a video fake is especially in high demand. Meanwhile, the researchers' interest is focused primarily on the verbal component of media content. In our study, we are trying to fill this gap and concretize the models of generating video fakes, their types, and reasons for their appearance.Based on the analysis of fake audiovisual content distributed in the media sphere in 2020 we identify two models of its appearance - synchronous and asynchronous. In the first case, fake is a result of distorting the video and audio of the work. In the second case, only one of the rows broadcasts a false idea. The latter case is dangerous in that the series of works that do not contain false information inspires confidence in the audience and makes it accept the media message as a whole.Also, in the study, we single out the most common types of fakes based on such characteristics as the degree of information distortion, the degree of reliability of spatial and temporal characteristics, and the degree of reliability of the source. We determine the most frequent markers of fakes in video works, namely: distortion of the shooting angle, concealment of the staged nature of filming, the use of animation and animation technologies that imitate newsreel footage, placement of inaccurate infographics in video work, fake news announcement, and publication.Among the most common reasons for the formation of video fakes, we note the desire to increase ratings, discriminate against specific individuals or organizations, draw attention to a real problem, and to entertain the audience.In the analysis of fake as a global phenomenon using the example of deepfake technology, we show how it can be used in constructively and destructively and emphasize the importance of developing media education to neutralize the negative consequences of the spread of fakes.

Abstract:

The paper discusses the possibilities of using vari-ous methods (discourse analysis, content analysis, event analysis, ethnographic methods) to study the formation and development of quasi-political dis-course. The nature of modern media discourse is due to the possibility of politicizing almost any event, which is often accompanied by a scathing response of the actors of media communication. The modality of their statements tends to be nega-tive, which testifies opposing political views and polarization of in- and out-groups. Quasi-political discourse is the response to political and near-political issues that are socially relevant, or seem to be such for the actors of media communication. Newspeak is an essential marker of quasi-political discourse, serving as a way to understand and con-struct political and quasi-political narratives. The analysis of newspeak enables the researcher to study broader phenomena, such as ideology, ma-nipulation and power. The paper proposes the framework for newspeak analysis, based on the var-ious methods; singles out features of quasi-political discourse and applies those methods to comments concerning current events that appear on social media.

Abstract:

Background: Serous Otitis media (SOM) is one of the most commonly encountered pathologies in children population. Fluids collection often leads to hearing loss with subsequent speech and language delay. So early diagnosis and management are of paramount importance to prevent these sequela. Effective management is often surgical: myringotomy and fluid aspiration. Myringotomy is not only therapeutic procedure, it is also the gold standard diagnostic method. It has been noticed that many ENT Surgeons in Gulf region depend on Tympanometry only for SOM diagnosis and ignore a complete clinical approach (history, physical examination including pneumatic endoscopy), this has ended up to a considerable unnecessary surgeries with high false positive diagnosis. The aim of this study is to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of Tympanometry in diagnosis of SOM in a local study, and to draw the attention of ENT Surgeons in this part of the world not to rush to book patients for myringotomy based on Tympanometry results only. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved patients aged ≤12 yo, whom underwent myringotomy for SOM management during the period: from June 2018 to March 2019 at the ENT - department Dubai Hospital. The evaluation included the presenting complaint, physical examination, preoperative tympanometry result and intraoperative findings. Typ B tympanometry was considered (positive) for the diagnosis of SOM, while other graph types were deemed (negative). Gold standard SOM diagnosis was the intraoperative existence of fluid (positive), and subsequently absence of fluids was (negative) Intraoperative findings were matched with the preoperative tympanometry results, proper statistical schedules were performed and tympanometry sensitivity and specificity were calculated. Results: The study included 139 patients: 90 patients are male (64.7%) and 49 are female (35.3%) with mean age of 5.2 year (SD=2.1). The most common complaint was hearing loss in 77 patient (55.4%). Type B tympanometry found in 113 patients (82.5%) and fluid was found in 111 patients (79.9%). The sensitivity and specificity of Type B tympanometry: 88.2% and 80.7% respectively. Statistical tests found significant findings with P value < 0.05. Conclusions: SOM is common in age group 3-7years. History of hearing loss along with dull tympanic membrane and type B tympanometry strongly suggest SOM. However, in our study we found out that Type B graph highly suggests SOM, while the absence of this graph not necessarily rule out fluid collections. So Physicians should be aware while interpreting tympanometry graphs and evaluate these results in the context of patients’ history and examination. In order to enhance SOM diagnosis, we suggest combining Pneumatic otoscopy findings with Tympanometry graphs. This could be a future research topic: the addition value of Pneumatic otoscopy to Tympanometry graphs in the diagnosis of SOM.

Abstract:

Objective. This research aims at defining the principles of constructing effective narratives with the use of the strategic communication capabilities and the media. Materials and Methods. Publications in modern English and Ukrainian mass-media have been analyzed using methods and techniques of discourse analysis, content- and intent-analysis with elements of pragmatic and narrative analysis. The author’s methodology included the following: to identify the author’s intention and motives, the main topoi and points of the narrative focalization, to define hidden beliefs, social and psychological basis for the recipient’s perception of the narrative, to outline effective strategies for the narrative construction and dissemination in the media. Results. In general, modern media have the capacity of constructing the desired frames in the audience’s consciousness by creating a mental model of the situation, on which the consumer of the information starts to rely. Decision-making now is reliant on the media consciousness, a virtual world imposed by the media and constructed with the help of relevant narratives. Modern strategic narratives usually have the external focalization which gets more credibility when supported and presented by the focalization points of celebrities and experts. Competing narratives, as well as the plurality of possible interpretations of events, are destroyed with the help of the media, which begin to broadcast one interpretation of the event that matches the narrative, by this making it the truth. Simultaneous use of several different media intensifies the influence and support the narrative. Repeating information changes its status and makes it not just a fact, but general knowledge. Any narrative is not only a sequential story of the selected events, but also persuasion in its nature. Persuasion is enhanced when narratives resonate with the audience's value system. Conclusions. As a strategic communication tool, an effective narrative is constructed with regard to all the aspects of communication, psycholinguistic and social aspects being especially important. Further insights into the problem of shaping narratives will allow outlining best practices and their elements to develop image-forming narratives.

Abstract:

Drawing from Swedish press history in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the present article argues for further historical investigation into three aspects of Jürgen Habermas’ theory of the public sphere. The first concerns actual media participation, the second the representative features of media institutions, and the third media systems. These routes of analysis can and should be combined, and historical specificity is key. When we focus on concrete situations and places, the neat grand-scale chronologies (Habermas’ and others’) fall short. There is no simple development from a “representative publicness” to a participatory public sphere, and back again. And the media have always been interconnected in a system-like way. However, historical specificity does not exclude contemporary developments. The present conclusion is that if we are to gain any true understanding of contemporary phenomena, a historical perspective is crucial, and aspects of Habermas’ theory can serve as heuristic tools.

Abstract:

Rapid identification of Candida isolates to the species level is essential in order to optimize the antifungal treatment. This study aimed to isolate and identify different species of Candida from various clinical specimens and to evaluate the use of chromogenic agar media as primary culture media for culture of Candida as well as for rapid identification of Candida species. A total of 100 different clinical specimens were studied (oral swab 35, high vaginal swab 28, catheterized urine 15, nail 14, bronchoalveolar lavage 04 and peritoneal fluid 04). Isolation of Candida species was done by primary culture in Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA). Subsequent identification of species was performed by germ tube test, carbohydrate assimilation test (with commonly used twelve sugars) and subculture in chromogenic agar medium. Out of 64 isolated Candida, C. albicans 33 (51.53%) was the most predominant Candida species followed by C. tropicalis 17 (26.56%). The species of C. glabrata was 4 (6.25%), C. parapsilosis 4 (6.25%), C. krusei 3 (4.68%) and C.guilliermondii 2 (3.2%). One of the isolated Candida species was unidentified. The sensitivity and specificity of chromogenic agar media for C. albicans were as 96.97% and 96.87% respectively. The sensitivity and specificity for C. tropicalis were 94.12% and 97.87% respectively. C. krusei and C. glabrata both showed 100% sensitivity and specificity on chromogenic agar media. Aim/Purpose: This study investigates the variations in student participation patterns across different types of instructional activities, learning modes, and with different instructional guidance approaches. In the current study, different variables, modes of learning (guided versus unguided), and types of guidance (social versus cognitive) were manipulated in a series of microblogging-supported collaborative learning tasks to examine to what extent and in which aspects instructional guidance affects the effectiveness and student perception of microblogging-supported learning. Background: Despite the overwhelming agreement on the importance of instructional guidance in microblogging-supported learning environments, very few studies have been done to examine the specificity of guidance, such as how to structure and support microblogging activities, as well as what types of guidance are appropriate in what learning contexts. Methodology: This semester-long study utilized a case-study research design via a multi-dimensional approach in a hybrid classroom with both face-to-face and online environments. Tweets were collected from four types of activities and coded based on content within their contextual setting. Twenty-four college students participated in the study. Contribution: In response to the call to improve social media learning environments under-scored in contemporary education, the current case study took an initial step aiming at deepening the understanding of the role of instructional guidance in microblogging-supported learning environments. Findings: This study showcases that with instructor facilitation, students succeeded in being engaged in a highly participatory and interactive learning experience across a variety of tasks and activities. This study indicates that students’ perspectives of social media tools rely heavily on what instructors do with the tool and how the instructional activities are structured and supported. Instructors’ scaffolding and support is instrumental in keeping students on task and engaging students with meaningful events, thus ensuring the success of microblogging-based learning activities. Meanwhile, students’ perception of usefulness of instructional guidance is closely related to their own pre-perception and experience. Recommendations for Practitioners: When incorporating social media tools, it is important to examine learner’s prior knowledge and comfort level with these tools and tailor the design of instructional activities to their attributes. It is also vital to monitor student progress, adjust the type and amount of guidance and scaffolding provided as they progress, and eventually remove the scaffolding until students can demonstrate that they can perform the task successfully without assistance. Recommendation for Researchers: Due to many other potential factors in place that could potentially influence student learning, no conclusive remarks can be made regarding the superiority of either one type of guidance approach. Future researchers should continue to develop robust research methodologies to seek ways to better operationalize this variable and strive to understand its effect. Future Research: Future replication studies in other settings, with a larger sample size, and different populations will certainly provide further insights on the effects of instructional guidance in microblogging-based learning. Alternative coding methods may also shed light on differences in student interaction in terms of content diversity and depth of learning when analyzing the tweets. Advanced data collection techniques may be explored to ascertain the completeness of data collection.

AbstractThis article explores original empirical findings from a research project investigating representations of cyberterrorism in the international news media. Drawing on a sample of 535 items published by 31 outlets between 2008 and 2013, it focuses on four questions. First, how individuated a presence is cyberterrorism given within news media coverage? Second, how significant a threat is cyberterrorism deemed to pose? Third, how is the identity of ‘cyberterrorists’ portrayed? And, fourth, who or what is identified as the referent – that which is threatened – within this coverage? The article argues that constructions of specificity, status, and scale play an important, yet hitherto under-explored, role within articulations of concern about the threat posed by cyberterrorism. Moreover, unpacking news coverage of cyberterrorism in this way leads to a more variegated picture than that of the vague and hyperbolic media discourse often identified by critics. The article concludes by pointing to several promising future research agendas to build on this work.

Summary: Numerous studies have considered the association between media reporting and portrayal of suicide and actual suicidal behavior or ideation. This review considered 42 studies that have examined the nonfiction media (newspapers, television, and books). Consideration was given to the extent to which inferences could be made about the relationship between portrayal of suicide in the given media and actual suicidal behavior in terms of: the strength of its association; and the extent to which it could be considered causal. The review demonstrated that there is an association between nonfictional media portrayal of suicide and actual suicide. The association satisfies sufficient of the criteria of consistency, strength, temporality, specificity and coherence for it to be deemed causal.

This article examines the relationship between exceptionalism and nationhood in media classification. The history of age-ratings is an international one, and the present challenges associated with digital media circulation are similarly international. We argue that the nation nevertheless provides an appropriate frame for understanding age-rating by attending to the ways national agencies have struggled to articulate the specificity of their work based on the specificity of domestic constituencies. Drawing on archival and ethnographic research, our central examples include the resistance of the Motion Picture Association of America to age-based film classification, the British Board of Film Classification’s examination of American films in the 1980s, contemporary Japanese videogame regulation, and the emergence of the International Age Rating Coalition. We argue that national exceptionalism is itself generalised and that media content regulation is less about producing national culture than about laying claim to a nation by differentiation.

Microbial diagnostic microarrays are tools for simultaneous detection and identification of microorganisms in food, clinical, and environmental samples. In comparison to classic methods, microarray-based systems have the potential for high throughput, parallelism, and miniaturization. High specificity and high sensitivity of detection have been demonstrated. A microbial diagnostic microarray for the detection of the most relevant bacterial food- and waterborne pathogens and indicator organisms was developed and thoroughly validated. The microarray platform based on sequence-specific end labeling of oligonucleotides and the phylogenetically robust gyrB marker gene allowed a highly specific (resolution on genus and/or species level) and sensitive (0.1% relative and 104 CFU absolute sensitivity) detection of the target pathogens. In initial challenge studies of the applicability of microarray-based food analysis, we obtained results demonstrating the questionable specificity of standardized culture-dependent microbiological detection methods. Taking into consideration the importance of reliable food safety assessment methods, comprehensive performance assessment is essential. Results demonstrate the potential of this new pathogen diagnostic microarray to evaluate culture-based standard methods in microbiological food analysis.

Abstract Internet censorship mechanisms in China are highly dynamic and yet to be fully accounted for by existing theories. This study interrogates postpublication censorship on Chinese social media by examining the differences between 2,280 pairs of censored WeChat articles and matched remaining articles. With the effects of account attributes and article topics excluded, we find that article specificity raises the odds of being censored. Also, an examination on a collection of international trade articles indicates that such articles with textual units disclosing conflicts, even pro-regime messages, are also removed by the censors. This mixed-method study introduces focal point as a theoretical angle to understand China’s contextually contingent content regulation system and offers evidence based on large-scale, nonproprietary, and original social media data to investigate the evolving censorship mechanisms in China.

Abstract:

In this study, the feasibility of the synthesis of various flavor esters catalyzed by a commercial lipase from Candida rugosa was investigated and the process parameters were optimized. Lipase from C. rugosa successfully catalyzed the synthesis of 19 esters. The highest yields, of more than 90 % after 20 h, were observed in the synthesis of short-chain esters, pentyl propanoate, isopentyl butanoate, and butyl butanoate. Increasing the number of carbon atoms of both substrates above 8 caused a significant decrease of the initial reaction rates and the final yields. The enzyme showed surprisingly low affinity towards pentanoic acid and hexanoic acid, compared with the higher homologues, octanoic acid and decanoic acid. In addition to the number of carbon atoms, the structure of the substrates had a significant influence on the enzyme activity. Namely, the activity of the enzyme towards isopropanol was significantly lower compared with n-propanol. Additionally, cis-9-octadecenoic acid was a better substrate than octadecanoic acid, its saturated analogue.

The assessment of the quality of media by biological properties was carried out in accordance with their purpose.
