In this thesis we present findings from an experimental and numerical study of loosely confined, dry granular gases subject to vertical vibration. We found that the system phase separates into a high-density, liquid-like phase and a low-density gas-like phase. We investigate the onset of thermal convection in a number of porous models, with a focus on the influence of a boundary reaction. The models that we consider are: the Darcy porous model; the Darcy model with inclusion of the Soret effect and the Brinkman model, all with an exothermic surface reaction on the lower boundary. Shadow mapping is the most common real-time shadowing algorithm but it suffers from severe aliasing artifacts and self-shadowing effects. Methods for the removal of heat from a sphere, via jet impingement by single and multiple jets was documented experimentally. Average heat transfer rates from a sphere maintained at constant temperature, by means of an internal electronic heater, and subjected to single or multiple jet impingements were obtained and related to the exit conditions of the impinging air jet(s) and to geometric parameters.
