Balanzategui, Jessica, and Allison Craven. Monstrous Beings and Media Cultures. Amsterdam University Press, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463726344.

Full text
Abstract:
Monstrous Beings of Media Cultures examines the monsters and sinister creatures that spawn from folk horror, Gothic fiction, and from various sectors of media cultures. The collection illuminates how folk monsters form across different art and media traditions, and interrogates the 21C revitalization of “folk” as both a cultural formation and aesthetic mode. The essays explore how combinations of vernacular and institutional creative processes shape the folkloric and/or folkoresque attributes of monstrous beings, their popularity, and the contexts in which they are received. While it focuses on 21C permutations of folk monstrosity, the collection is transhistorical in approach, featuring chapters that focus on contemporary folk monsters, historical antecedents, and the pre-C21st art and media traditions that shaped enduring monstrous beings. The collection also illuminates how folk monsters and folk “horror” travel across cultures, media, and time periods, and how iconic monsters are tethered to yet repeatedly become unanchored from material and regional contexts.

Abstract:
One of the major advances in haematology during the past six decades has been the development of combination chemotherapy. However, some would dispute the claim that combination chemotherapy has been a major therapeutic advance, arguing that survival for most common cancers has not improved since the advent of chemotherapy. It is certainly true that the survival of children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia has improved and that the drug imatinib mesylate and its derivatives have changed the outcome for most patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia. Likewise, combination chemotherapy has greatly modified the prognosis for patients with Hodgkin lymphoma and some types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. However, it must be said that the application of combination chemotherapy to common non-haematological cancers has not met with similar success. In this chapter, the practicalities of the treatment of blood disorders are discussed, with specific reference to the use of this therapy by the medical profession.

Abstract:
Several tools are available to map brain electrical activity. Clinical applications focus on epileptic activity, although electric source imaging (ESI) and electroencephalography-coupled functional magnetic resonance imaging (EEG–fMRI) are also used to investigate non-epileptic processes in healthy subjects. While positron-emission tomography (PET) reflects glucose metabolism, strongly linked with synaptic activity, and single-photon-emission computed tomography (SPECT) reflects blood flow, fMRI (BOLD) signals have a hemodynamic component that is a surrogate signal of neuronal (synaptic) activity. The exact interpretation of BOLD signals is not completely understood; even in unifocal epilepsy, more than one region of positive or negative BOLD is often observed. Co-registration of medical images is essential to answer clinical questions, particularly for presurgical epilepsy evaluations. Multimodal imaging can yield information about epileptic foci and underlying networks. Co-registering MRI, PET, SPECT, fMRI, and ESI (or magnetic source imaging) provides information to estimate the epileptogenic zone and can help optimize surgical results.

Abstract:
Media technology is always embedded in certain cultural and social patterns of reception. Media are received differently over time in diverse milieus. This becomes particularly evident when a new technology is introduced. Beyond the pivotal question of media content, the scientific study of religion and for cultural studies benefits from highlighting issues of the cultural integration of specific media in general and from attempts to understand the valuation of specific media content. This chapter notes that ‘medium’ has a long-term etymology in European theology and philosophy and offers a roadmap for the study of media and religions. A systematic analytical approach is proposed focusing on the three dimensions of media production, media contents, and media reception. The combination of these three dimensions facilitates a cross-media perspective that offers insights into the mutual interplay between the production and the reception of religious contents in media.

Campbell, Jane, and Theresa Carilli, eds. Intersectional Media. The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2021. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781666994773.

Abstract:
Intersectional Media: Representations of Marginalized Identities analyzes media depictions of a variety of intersecting identities. Through a study examining how components of identity such as race, class, ethnicity, age, ability, class, and sexuality mesh and form a unique worldview, contributors to this collection frame their understanding of media intersectionality as complex and multi-layered studies of identity. Rather than focusing on any one component of marginalized identity, this book broadens the scope of inquiry and encourages audiences to recognize the complexity of media analysis when a combination of marginalized identities is depicted. Contributors demonstrate their understanding of how different components of identity combine and create new, original components of identity, paving the way for new studies of both media and identity. Scholars of media studies, identity studies, cultural studies, minority studies, gender studies, race studies, and sociology will find this book particularly useful.

Abstract:
This book investigates whether Facebook and Twitter have become a genre of media for higher education institutions. Thomas Kenny has conducted a mixed-methods study using a combination of content analysis and interviews with social media employees to explore the purpose, form, and functionality of these web pages. Ultimately, Kenny argues that while institutional web pages on Facebook and Twitter do constitute a genre, each is a separate and distinct platform that works differently with varying goals, structure, and effectiveness associated with them. Scholars of communication, information studies, media studies, journalism, and higher education will find this book of particular interest.

Sarvasy, Hannah S. Imperatives and commands in Nungon. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198803225.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
The two dedicated positive imperative paradigms of the Papuan language Nungon cover all subject person/number combinations. The Immediate Imperative and Delayed Imperative differ semantically, pragmatically, and formally. The Immediate Imperative demands immediate compliance, rings peremptorily, and shares morphology with the Counterfactual and medial verb Different-Subject marking. The Delayed Imperative anticipates delayed compliance and is polite; it may have originated through iconic vowel alteration of the Future Irrealis. The time distinction between the positive Immediate and Delayed Imperatives is neutralized under negation; a single dedicated Prohibitive likely arose from the combination of an attention-getting suffix and the positive Future Irrealis. Nungon also has eight imperative strategies, which may be coordinated with dedicated imperative forms; conventional verbless directives exist as well. Dedicated imperatives can function in questions. Children show early acquisition of canonical and non-canonical imperative forms. Finally, this hunting society also has dog commands that are unrelated to usual imperative forms.

Abstract:
Digital communication tools have transformed the way we can change behaviour. There are benefits for academics and social marketers using digital and social media as tools for both information sharing and behaviour change. Both individual and macro behaviour change principles can be successfully applied in a digital environment and advances in analytics and sensor technology allow social marketers to effectively motivate a participant’s behaviour change journey through relevant and timely support. The combination of network theory and social media has shown that strategically structured online communities can create social environments that promote behaviour change, and social currency is a necessary component in building a social media campaign that has high-value content which in turn creates high engagement and social media campaign success.

Full text
Abstract:
This book reveals the secrets of hybrid and combination techniques. Combined techniques are often used by printmakers as tricky ways of achieving particular results, and then not fully acknowledged or detailed in the information that accompanies the print when it is exhibited. Combination printmaking has a long history, but the explosion of media now available to printmakers has opened up many new possibilities. Learning the techniques associated with creating hybrid prints is, at the moment, a case of trial-and-error for most printmakers, unless they are lucky enough to have a tame and generous printmaking friend who will share their secrets; most printmakers closely guard the secrets of how they make their unique prints. This book will explain a lot of these 'secret' methods and techniques.
