Full textThe turning out of reunion island statute from a government colony to a French overseas department in 1946 was seen as a major event, politically, historically and above all culturally speaking. Indeed from then on, the island became part and parcel of France and consequently French citizenship was granted to a multi-ethnic people sharing all the same language in every day life, that is to say Creole which developed from various backgrounds. The geographical location of Reunion Island makes it a land of utmost importance from a geostrategical point of view. Thus the local government never fails to enhance patriotic feelings as regards the mother country i. E. France. However, it seems that the awareness of a Reunionese identity is irreversibly being developed and strengthened. Mass media have become highly important in the cultural changes that followed. However, the process of media transcription is more often misapplied for various reasons, and, on the whole when compared to the mother country, Reunion Island means of communications tend to be worlds apart

Full textThe main objective of this doctoral thesis is the analysis of the role of a regional daily newspaper as a local social actor within a particular society: Reunion Island. More precisely, the present work is a monograph on le "Quotidien de la Réunion", in the context of a 21 year period (1976-1997). Within the general theoretical framework which has been adopted in order to make this case study, one is interested in the questions of the + building up; of events and news and of how newspapers deal with social movements and actions. In order to confirm the hypothesis that a local paper does fulfil a role of social actor facing social movements, we have applied the methods of discourse analysis to journalistic forms. This methodology may be regarded as essentially inspired by semiotics. We have analysed a corpus of articles and compared the accounts (by "Le Quotidien") of three movements : (I) the strong desire to save the + young ; "Quotidien" in 1977, (II) the support given to Télé Freedom in 1991 and (III) the demonstration of civil servants and students in 1997. The analysis of the argumentative and rhetorical processes which are specific features of the paper's editorial strategy permits us to ascertain its value system and its positions on the local scene, and also to emphasize certain contradictions and discrepancies between its editorial principles and its journalistic practices

Full textThis work looks into mechanisms and processes relating to the setting up of differentiel discriminating treatments dealing with HIV-Aids patients in hospitals. It is based on research carried out in three hospitals: two of them are located in the Reunion Island and the third one in Ile-de-France. With regard to the analysis of patients and hospital staff views, the study of their interaction and of hospital everyday life, it has been necessary to carry out a work of comparison and integration of the data obtained in the proper context. Thus we have been able to locate the setting up of a differential discriminating treatment at the meeting point of individual and mutual interaction, as well as structural, institutional, social, political, sanitary, medical and cultural reasons. Our study has pointed out the existence of differentiation relating to the care given in hospitals to Aids patients. The study highlights the fact that differentiation is the result of patients being put into categories rather than from being cared for individually. These categories are intrinsically linked to the idea of "risk"; they are born from epidemiology and ordinary social representations. They have been integrated by hospital staff, and have impacted on the global care given to patients. The study underlines the effects of both scientific and ideological knowledge inferred by the existence of categories. It shows that differential discriminating treatments exist in medical care

Full textThis dissertation is about the role played by media practices in the identity construction of adolescent secondary school (lycée) students in La Réunion. Secondary school adolescence is considered here as a period of multiple changes during which young individuals learn to be part of this moment of life. The transformation for students from college to lycée goes via the realization of “intermediary finalities”: differentiation, negotiation and identification. Differentiation means taking a distance from other individuals (children, adults, parents, opposite sex). Negociation results from the adolescents ‘ willingness to compose with different elements which are forced upon then and which are parts of their identity. Finally, indentification marks the individuals ‘ desires to adopt codes and activities playing a part in the recognition of their identity. The analysis of interviews conducted with students from the fifth of secondary school (seconde) shows that these teenagers are inspired by their media practices to define “strategies of identity” which help them in the construction of their personal selves. This research observes that media practices are not the only agents for the definition of adolescence: cultural dynamics operating in the island are equally important factors. The thesis also questions the links which can be made between media practices and rites of passage

Full textDespite its undeniable and numerous assets. Reunion Island, which is both a French department and a tropical island in the Indian Ocean, has turned belatedly to tourism. Becoming aware of the reliance of the impact of tourism on an economic scale, the island has been developing this activity in order to answer to one of its main socio-economical need, the problem of unemployment. Many touristic and leisure activities have flourished during last years. However, in spite of the progress made in this field, there is not a real and global touristic project. "Blue tourism" (beaches, sun and sea) to "green tourism" (mountains and the inland sites), the island is trying to offer different aspects of its possibilities. The development of its assets, hindered by the geospatial imbalance of the island, in order to become real and strong touristic products must be promoted by the local population if the aim of welcoming half million tourists in a well balanced and harmonious way. In the year 2000 wants to be reached. Much effort has still to be continued to attain a well controlled and diversified range of touristic products in Reunion Island

Full textHow could the place where people live have a part in promoting (improving) or deteriorating their health ? The researcher analyse health socio-territorial constructions on La Réunion island. He tries to bring together the backdrop corresponding to the populations' "environnent", which would explain how, beside social or individual characteristics, risk exposure can be influenced by living locations. Local health constructions appear to be, in each location, specific combinations of all aspects of "the environnent", term including numerous and varied aspects of life (ecological and biological data, social and family relationships, health services supplying) which surrounds and "deterrnines" populations' health. Two quarter comparative monographs (exploration of the conditions of social relationships within the districts, the spatial representations and practical experiences, social and health support authorities appropriation modes, localized active and passive treatment methods) shows processes that are firmly-rooted and filled in a territorialized daily /ife, through which the inhabitants' health builds up or worsens

Full textThis research deals with the way the different constructions of the identity in Reunion island, particularly through the expression of their discursive representations, encourage the emergence of the "reunioneese" complexity and the ways of management which are set up to make its existence bearable. The exploration of the definitions of identity has confirmed its position at the junction of human sciences. It is art first at the light of historical, socio-economic and linguistic backgrounds that this research has picked out a first reading level of the "reunioneese" identity. From the analysis of the content and of the discourse, the originality of this essay is to show the way the complexity of the pluriethnical, pluricultural reality and of the integration is organized. This study shows how these different representations of identity are elaborated either on the mode of idealisation or as a discursive compromise to deal with the antagonisms. The melting pot, the violence. . . More over, these constructions of identity represent the cognitive means to cope with the personal, indeed peculiar engagement in the social insular complex and dynamic situations where modernity and third-world live together. The social and also individual representatioins actually call on the signifiant material of the language and contribute to bring about a very precarious link between the different and numerous functions of the identities and the representations that are specific to the process of individual identifications which underlie them
