Full textThough mediation and cultural mediation seem to be enrooted in Translation Studies especially since the Cultural Turn, a specialized definition of these notions is still missing. Based on their definitions in other different domains – especially cultural communication – and on a causal theory of translation, we present a three-fold thesis on the translator as a cultural mediator and on his deliberate interventions. The three axes we develop here are based on identity, textual and functionalist approaches. First, we analyze the specificity of the identity of the translator seen as a construction that is not only marked by the linguistic formation and the sociocultural norms of his original community, but also by the actor’s empathy towards the Other and his system of norms. In this first fold, translation strategies are studied as mirrors of identity strategies the translator follows in order to keep the coherence and the valorization of his identity construction. Then, the texts and types of texts are considered as cultural creations that the translator re-presents to his community through making cultural differences understandable on the formal, lexical and discourse levels. To do so, he uses different writing norms from the most conforming to the most differentiating one. In this second fold, the translator’s preface is seen as a privileged place for a direct mediation, in which he already informs his reader about the translation he’s about to read and recommends the reading. Finally, we study two translation functions through which the translator acts on the cultural identity of his community based on his re-presentation of the text: the intellectual formation of the reader and the de-construction/ re-construction of his identity. By the means of a simple text or of an educational institution, the translator’s first aim is to inform the reader, and through this information, he acts on the re-definition of essential foundations of his identity construction
Simard-Houde, Mélodie. "Le Reporter, médiateur, écrivain et héros : un répertoire culturel (1870-1939)." Thesis, Montpellier 3, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015MON30012.
Full textReportage, understood as investigative journalism of the written press, was invented in France in the last third of the nineteenth century, not without causing debates and contradictory representations between supporters and opponents. During the interwar period its popularity is at its peak, as reportage presents itself in different media (books, daily and weekly press) and with different relations to news and fictionalization. Reportage therefore appears less like a genre than a matrix of investigative journalism, whose formation and evolution can be traced and generic variations described (such as collective, serialized and news reportages). Linked to the development of the news media, reportage establishes the special correspondent as a mediator, a writer and a hero of modern media culture. The Reporter, as an object of the social imaginary of the Third Republic, is a complex figure, which representations are situated at the crossroads of different productions. These include fictions, press articles (reportages, interviews, obituaries, metadiscourses), Memoirs of journalists, as well as a set of iconographic representations, all of which are drawn upon to define a cultural repertoire of journalistic scenographies, fictional scenarios and authorial positions contributing to the formation of a social imaginary of the reporter, defined both as a publicized figure and a mediator. In the intrigues and stories in which the reporter appears, he meets other social imaginaries – of colonization, of the body, of technical and social progress, of the Nation. These mould the reporter into a Republican figure, closely linked to the development of parliamentary democracy and of freedom of the press, and to modern technology and media. Finally, heir of the French literary journalism, but also associated with new recording techniques (that is, visual media, photography and cinema), the reporter is the pivot between two mediatic imaginaries : one that uses the journalist's subjectivity and the prism of human mediation to account for a worldview ; the other, which will prevail in the second half of the twentieth century, claims to offer an objective grasp of reality, as permitted by the illusion of technical mediation

Full textThis monograph is focused on the role as cultural mediator of the Jewish Austrian writer Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) and takes an approach based on the "cultural transfers" theory. His varied identities led him to assume a mediating position among the French literary intellectuals essentially Emile Verhaeren (1855-1916) and Romain Rolland (1866-1944). In order to succeed in this mission as mediator, he created a successful literary network strategy. A Zweig's dynamic took place including correspondences, translations, prefaces, conferences and promoting in this way an intensive French-German dialog or rather a European cultural forum. His relationship to politics and Jewish movements is ambivalent and questionable essentially during the Nazism period

Full textThis research in the field of information communication Sciences connects the promotion and protection of cultural heritage with the notion of territorial management. From a local development perspective, a region's natural and cultural heritage provides the basis for advancing the economy and tourism. Our thesis focuses on promoting and protecting cultural heritage in rural regions of Southern Tunisia. This research addresses an important problem for many rural Tunisian communities preserving their cultural heritage in the face of marginalization and poverty because of The financial and institutional difficulties needed to support their professional activities. The problems of under development continue as local partners are frequently confronted with disaccord related to responsibility and the actions necessary for promoting cultural heritage. These problems are often due to a lack of communication between communities and local authorities that is essential for promoting cultural heritage in times when identity loss due to globalization is a serious concern. Our research underlines the fundamental aspect of institutional support for mediating dialogue between local actors. It implicates the participation of non-governmental organizations as actors in strengthening and mediating collaborations between local institutions and populations in the process of promoting cultural heritage. Our research action project was developed in order to explore new grounds of investigation and to gain a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of actors collaborating in the region

Full textDespite having often been reduced to the status of lucid and satirical journalist or to that of a polemicist of the Weimar Republic, Kurt Tucholsky (1890-1935) yet played a far more intercultural role than it’s been said. He lived in Paris, working as a foreign correspondent from 1924 to 1929 and this period, although rarely studied, had a significant impact on his work. Indeed, at that time, he developed a new type of text which we characterise as « French-German chronicles ». Tucholsly writes about France for a German readership and constantly compares the realities of both societies, thereby pursuing his fight for peace with yet another method- that of striving to bring France and Germany closer together. Our aim is thus to demonstrate how Tucholsky stands fully in line with the long list of French-German mediators. Based on the concepts of cultural transfer and of mediator, our analysis focuses on the study of both the travel book Ein Pyrenäenbuch and of articles and poems dating from that period which have a Franco-German dimension. It eventually reveals that Tucholsky depicted France with partiality and that his writing strategy sways between provoking the reader and inciting him or her to play an active role.Added to those two major dimensions which make the chronicles unique, the last and strong axis of the thesis revolves around the ambivalence and limits that such a mediation work imply

Full textThe translation s of the Greek poet Constantine Karyotakis as well as the influence of French poets in its works constitute the subject of this study. This thesis falls within the scope of applied linguistics, translation studies and comparative litterature. The subject is examined both diachronically and synchronically. After presentation of the poet and his works, we examine the French influence in Greece and, thereafter, in the poet's works, which are distinguished in those influence by poets already translated in Greek and those inflenced by poets appaearing in the French Anthology "Poètes d'aujourd'hui". Insofar as the translated works are concerned, they were studied not only in terms of linguistics and sociolingistics but of pragmatics as well. We also investigate the transfer of the cultural elements in the translated text, and issue considered as one of the most difficult problems on translation. Furthermore, we looked into the topics and the functions of the translations in the works of Karyotakis. Having taken into considration the intercultural value of the translations we compared some of these translated works to those translated by others : a study of the translation stategies adopted as well as the translator's identity as an intercultural mediator

Full textAt the heart of recent cultural issues, museum institutions implement a cultural democratization project promoting art and museum spaces accessibility to a diversity of audiences. Based on France’s law on museums from 2002, this project is focusing on children and teenagers thanks to the creation of cultural mediation and specific museum offers. Regarded as the visitor of tomorrow, this young audience generates to museums a set of expectations and questionings regarding visitor knowledge, tools for increasing attendance, loyalty and art accessibility. These cultural mediation spaces become an opportunity for tracking visitors' journey and understanding intrinsic points of views. We will study various situations throughout the prism of Ergonomics by highlighting encounters with works of art during a guided tour on one hand, plastic and narratives creation during workshops on the other hand. Activity analysis will be an effective way for exploring and improving our understanding of traces of constructive activities and development in order to conceptualize them. These empirical and theoretical contributions will help developing appropriate resources of cultural mediation offers to young audiences and mediation professionals

Full textThis PhD dissertation aims to understand and render the “action grammar” of cultural mediation. While the limits of this field are hazy, this work presents a socio-historical definition of this type of activity, the development of which is ascribed to the reframing of the cultural democratization project. This PhD describes the topography of a field crisscrossed by complex and partially contradictory professionalization trends. A large number of mediation devices are observed and analyzed through a double angle: on the one hand, that of the forms, and on the other hand, that of the meaning of these projects. This double questioning unveils problems which are specific to the acknowledgment of mediation projects and to the definition of both the objects that are to be communicated (art works, aesthetical experience, artistic practice) and those at the receiving end (which audiences are targeted?). It also allows us to understand how mediators (educators) construct their activity as a transformation of the relationship to others and to oneself, endowed with meaning and with social and civic usefulness, conveyed by the term “ethics”. This is a contribution to the understanding of subjective processes of work commitment and of the enactment of the relation to values, while shedding light on mediation devices' action mechanisms. The fieldwork was carried out in various settings (performing arts, film, plastic arts) and in different institutions (Théâtre de l’Odéon, Parc de la Villette etc.), associations (CEMÉA, Chroma-Zebrock) or artistic education projects (Ecole au cinéma)

Full textIn a cultural institution, the mediator contributes to the discovery and understanding of the piece of art exhibited in a museographic context. He transmits this knowledge by creating linkages between the piece of art exhibited, the visitor and himself (Allard, 1999). This transmission is made through discourse, specific actions and gestures (McNeill, 1992).Phenomenological (Merleau-Ponty, 1945), sociological (Goffman, 1973) and anthropological (Mauss, 1934) approaches tend to show that gesture is an important instrument in communicating with the world as well as in establishing linkages according to codes established by society. Thus, the professional gesture (Jorro, 2002, 2004, 2018) is characterised by its addressability and its efficiency. In order to be efficient, the professional gesture is mobilised at appropriate moments according to the perceived affordances (Gibson, 1979). It can be defined according to "la matrice d'agir" elaborated by Jorro (2002, 2017) in the context of research concerning the action of a teacher or that of a cultural mediator. In this research, mediation sequences were filmed at the Louvre-Lens, the Cité des Télécoms in Lannion, and the Musée des arts et métiers (Paris). Their analysis, completed by the analysis of semi-directive and self-confrontation interviews of the filmed mediators, made it possible to identify three categories of professional gestures: the gesture of staging knowledge which is centred on the presentation of an object, of knowledge or a device, which explains a scientific or cultural concept; the gesture of communication to involve the visitor in the animation or establish an atmosphere of benevolence or mark an active listening; the gesture of adaptating the mediation process to manage the scenic space, modify the initial presentation of an object. How are these gestures specific to the profession of cultural mediator transmitted to mediators during the training organised on their arrival in a cultural institution? An analysis of semi-directive interviews conducted with mediator-trainers has provided some answers. The trainers recognise the importance of mobilising these specific professional gestures during a mediation sequence to transmit knowledge, although this question of professional gestures has not been addressed yet

Full textAs a part of the history of the international cultural relations, this thesis focuses on the second wave of the cultural americanisation of Brazil (1946-1978). It questions the notion of americanisation, its actors, its decision makers and their means of action, as well as the cultural meeting places between Brazil and the United States. In a bipolar international political context, the second cultural americanisation of Brazil takes place in a « peripheral » Cold War which oversteps the axis United- States - Soviet-Union. It is realized by a complex network of decision makers who believe in the importance of the strenghtening of the American continental friendship. For that purpose, culture in all its different forms proves to be useful for the « soft power » foreign politic and to be an ideal tool, a true « weapon », in the hands of the private decision makers. This thesis focuses on the actors and the individual or collective mediators, private ones or public ones, as well as on their cultural actions which help to spread the American Way of Life over the axis Rio de Janeiro - Sao Paulo. The Brazilians, individuals, political authorities or private institutions occupy a key place in this cultural alignement process: they invite artists from the United-States willingly and organise or receive cultural events from the « big brother » with sympathy. This voluntary Brazilian participation leads the process approach of this work: a widely « invited » americanisation in the museums, galleries, theaters or Brazilian cultural instituts. These meeting places and cultural areas have not yet been much analysed by the historiography; but they are fundamental for the comprehension of the place given to Brazil in the international art circuits in the bipolar context, for the comprehension of the cultural presence of the United States in Brazil and for the nature of the international relations of the two giants during the cultural Cold War

Then, a more practical approach will be to survey a number of decision makers in a survey of a sample of subjects. The aim is to find out whether multidisciplinary mediation exists in these institutions or not, and whether the directorates are aware of the interest of this orientation for the future and for the quality of training in their institutions. This research carried out within the framework of the thesis is irrigated by the contributions of several fields of the sciences of the information and the communication, in particular that of the mediation and the intercultural and international communication as well as fields such as the translation, the pedagogy. The idea is to show that such an object of research needs to be studied on several levels and at the crossroads of discipline given new contexts of meaning created by digital technology

Full textIn museums and exhibition centres, the audience's reception of art works may be directed and oriented by museums educaors : they are the "busy bees" in the french governments' cultural democratization policy. If there is today a professional group labeled "museum educators", it is eventually the product of an exogenous construction by the institutions. Although a politic willpower reinforced by the law in 2002, the museums' various forms of HR management are still characterized by a high level of flexibility, a lack of focus in the scope of activity and a vague division of professional juridictions. Because public employers fail to offer stable and durable jobs and career perspectives, most of museum educators are not entirely and mainly engaged in their work. This labour market's feature hinder the collective structuration of a social group : museum educators have so far failed to build up a common destiny and to defend a distinctive position

We will examine the function of cultural and artistic mediator, at the intersection of the world of culture and the world of school, by studying historically, a corpus of texts of reference, as well as the exercise of the mediator function in France. We will contextualize this analysis, observing styles of artistic and cultural mediators in mediations in the presence of schoolchildren and their effects. At the heart of our problem, we will examine the border between transmission and mediation. The thesis will conclude on a proposal for favourable indicators at a full meeting of students with work art

Full textBrand management systems (BMSs) are of prime importance to monitor an effective brand management and enhance firms’ performance. The lack of research about brand management practices makes the evaluation of their impact on performance difficult to assess. In order to fill this gap, this doctoral research tries to: (1) identify the BMS’s main practices and components; (2) define a BMS scale; (3) test the BMS mediating role in the relationship between market orientation and brand performance; (4) determine to what extent brand management systems contributes to brand performance, measured at subjective and objective levels, globally and in five sectors; (5) study the moderating effects of firms’ and sectors’ characteristics. The research was carried out with a sample of 359 managers. The results demonstrate the mediating effect of BMS on subjective brand performance to objective financial performance. Multigroup analyses show moderating effects which influence BMS and market orientation valuation, which provides relevant information for top managers’ decision making

Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012AIXM1060.
Full textThe objective of this thesis is to understand the nature and the basis of supply chain integration development in the context of Moroccan automotive suppliers. Thereof, it will demonstrate how the nature of supply chain integration depends very closely on the nature of trust developed towards the partner. This trust is closely determined by the national culture's characteristics. Methodology wise, the thesis is based on a sequential process that starts with an exploratory qualitative phase conducted with sociologists, anthropologists and historians to understand the national culture's variables, and with Moroccan automotive suppliers. In a second confirmatory phase, the theoretical model was confronted to an empirical quantitative investigation. The results were analyzed using structural equations under the PLS approach. The research results suggest that the national culture's characteristics in Morocco favor the development of an affective type of trust that in turn favors the supply chain integration

Full textIn line with discussions highlighting the cultural dimension of translators' language training, this study is based on an observation: the constant failure of many applicants to pass the entrance exams to Europe's leading translation schools and offers to seek solutions to the problem. Several professional trainers identified the lack of awareness of cultural mediation during the language training for the candidates, as the key reason for the issue, however they did not indicate how to introduce the cultural mediation in the teaching of foreign languages and translation. It was therefore necessary to conduct a series of empirical studies in order to provide answers to the question. This study defends the idea that the development of the performance of cultural mediation, now required of future translators, is inconceivable without taking into account a specific treatment of the foreign ethno-socio-cultural imaginary. It presents a typology of the various ways in which this imaginary spontaneously and silently invites itself into different kinds of speeches and analyses the way in which this imaginary is addressed from a cultural mediation perspective in translation studies and didactics. A survey of 418 academics (teachers and students alike) identified elements that hindered successful training of translators as cultural mediators, and as a result, a number of suggestions were made to support this officially announced goal in Saudi universities, bearing in mind that these suggestions assign different conclusions to the ethno-socio-cultural approach, depending on whether the intended approach is aimed at a pedagogical or a professional training of translators
Gewerc, Monique. "Formation culturelle des enseignants : qu'offrent les musées de la ville de Rio de Janeiro ?" Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université Côte d'Azur, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022COAZ2002.
Full textThis thesis seeks to understand the contribution of art museums in the city of Rio de Janeiro as a locus of cultural and aesthetic training for teachers in the early years of basic education and the relationship that teachers establish with these cultural spaces. Understanding cultural training as a right and part of teacher training implies assuming diversity, continuity and mediation as part of ethical, political and aesthetic principles of humanizing teacher training. Cultural formation is configured in an intentional, continued, mediated, reflexive and shared process that provides aesthetic experiences so that cultural formation is not just a veneer that represents only one voice. With the support of authors from the field of Education and Museum Education, the concept of aesthetic and cultural formation is approached from a theoretical review, from the perspective of teachers and museum educators. An online questionnaire, interviews and document analysis were the data production tools used. The research findings indicated that, despite an underutilization of the art museum as a place of formation, the investigated museums offer activities that prioritize the authorship and creativity of teachers in a process that involves listening and the permeability of knowledge. As for the teachers, it was possible to observe that the concept of cultural training is not clear and, in general, the idea of access to legitimate cultural goods prevails as a model. This perception affects the relationship that the teacher establishes with the city's cultural facilities and the compensatory vision that runs through his practice with children. However, it was also possible to observe the emergence of dissonant voices that associate a cultural formation with a sensitive formation that transforms the subjectivity of the subject and privileges diversity and otherness

Full textAcne vulgaris is one of the most common skin diseases. Its pathogenesis is still unclear but Cutibacterium acnes (former Propionibacterium acnes) is considered as essential for its development. This bacterium is characterized by high genomic variability and some strains as ribotype 4 and 5 (RT4 and RT5) strains are highly associated with acne whereas RT6 strains are enriched in healthy skin. The physiological differences between these C. acnes types were evaluated dependently of their environment (culture media). Moreover, a link between acne and stress has been described, the use of preservative-free-cosmetics is burgeoning and bacteria can react to local factors by important metabolic changes. In this respect, two catecholamines and two cosmetic compounds were also tested. This study shows that the different C. acnes types are adapted to different ecological niches: acneic strains are adapted to sebaceous glands whereas non-acneic strains are more adapted to the skin surface and the upper hair follicle. Moreover, the acneic type seems associated to a more important inflammatory potential, which consolidates its possible implication in acne. The catecholamines can stimulate its biofilm formation and C. acnes treated by these molecules can stimulated the lipogenesis in sébocytes. Then, this study highlights the existence of a link between stress and the potential role of C. acnes in acne. Elsewhere, this study shows that the biofilm of C. acnes can be inhibited by Uriage thermal water and/or a rhamnose-rich polysaccharide (PS291®)

The goal of this PhD research is to show the connection between two parallel mobility phenomena that have the potential to dramatically change a local society. There are two strongly linked “mobility corridors” in Maramures. Incoming mobility, i.e. the arrival of foreigners, largely involves tourists, whilst outgoing mobility consists mostly of labour migration.
Rural tourism is embedded in a particular social, political and historical context. The alleged specificity of this area is a well-preserved authenticity, with a strong background of national discourse. Maramures is seen as an “authentic”, “archaic” or “traditional” area, so it attracts a particular category of visitor, as is often the case in rural tourism. The evolution of this tourism phenomenon is the result of the complex intersection of different actors’ interests, and migrants play a major role.
A large part of the labour migrants’ remittances is invested in rural tourism, directly or indirectly. Moreover, these migrants function as cultural brokers for tourism-related activities. Participation in either rural tourism or migration often facilitates access to the other. However, it also creates tensions and social gaps.
The steady growth of tourism and migration is both cause and effect of an interdependence between the cultural and economic models of Eastern and Western societies.

Full textIn the last decade, a wealth of literature has documented the situation of Rroma living in Central and Eastern Europe, in a context in which there has emerged new elite and new forms of political action. Among Western Europe’s Romani, political activism and elites seemed to be absent. This fieldwork has been done with certain types of elites among the Gypsies of Perpignan seeking to encourage political action, in the cultural context of a segmentary society with diffuse power which is faced with various forms of socio-economic exclusion by mainstream society. In this analysis, I suggest that exclusion by the païos (non Gypsies) is a denial of the relational reality of the Gypsies with the païa majority. Finally, this fieldwork has revealed the position of the cultural brokers, a role played by various agents intervening between Gypsies and non gypsies worlds. I argue that it is through the cultural broker’s role that political elite may emerge.
