Abstract:
There are numerous biases in medical research that render evidence from such research systematically misleading. Some of these biases are exacerbated by conflicts of interest, including fantastic financial incentives. The most important biases in medical research include confirmation bias, design bias, analysis bias, and publication bias. Arguably, some forms of bias, such as publication bias, should be considered as fraud. The pervasiveness of bias in medical research justifies one of the premises of the master argument for medical nihilism. Medical research is malleable due to the many biase

Abstract:
Society has always been fixated on looks and celebrities, but how we look has deep ramifications for ordinary people too. In this book, Bonnie Berry explains how social inequality pertains to prejudice and discrimination against people based on their physical appearance. This form of inequality overlaps with other, better-known forms of inequality such as those that result from sexism, racism, ageism, and classism. Social inequality regarding looks is notable in a number of settings: work, medical treatment, romance, and marriage, to mention a few. It is experienced as limitations on access to

Abstract:
Medical scientists employ ‘quality assessment tools’ to assess evidence from medical research, especially from randomized trials. These tools are designed to take into account methodological details of studies, including randomization, subject allocation concealment, and other features of studies deemed relevant to minimizing bias. There are dozens of such tools available. They differ widely from each other, and empirical studies show that they have low inter-rater reliability and low inter-tool reliability. This is an instance of a more general problem called here the underdetermination of ev

The same event that appeared unpredictable in foresight can be judged as predictable in hindsight. Hindsight bias clouds judgments in all areas of life, including legal decisions, medical diagnoses, consumer satisfaction, sporting events, and election outcomes. We discuss three theoretical constructs related to hindsight bias: memory, reconstruction bias, and motivation. Attempts to recall foresight knowledge fail because newly acquired knowledge affects memory either directly or indirectly by biasing attempts to reconstruct foresight knowledge. On a metacognitive level, overconfidence and sur

Abstract:
This chapter looks at the use of theatre as a tool for teaching self-awareness, the effects of bias, the understanding of complex human conditions, empathy, attunement, self-confidence, and decision-making in medical resident education. While more common in undergraduate medical programs and used across the health professions, theatre is emerging as a meaningful tool for education and research in the resident experience. The chapter is set within a performance studies paradigm that includes current understanding of the neuroscientific effect of theater on the body and in relationship, informat

This chapter is a practical how-to for funding strategies for arts-based and health humanities teaching in postgraduate medical education. Ideas contained here are suggestions and not meant to be an exhaustive manual, however they may direct the reader towards resources not previously considered. From support for specific activities and workshops to seeking major gifts for the creation of faculty-wide humanities programs, it is a broad-based fundraising how-to, suggesting both, small, incremental changes as well as broad, dramatic ways in which such programs can be transformed and provided wit
