Abstract:
BACKGROUND Dysmenorrhoea is the most common gynaecological problem. Almost half of the female adolescents suffer from it resulting in a major cause of school / college absenteeism. We tried to find out the prevalence of dysmenorrhoea among female adolescents in a suburban population and investigate a potential association between the body mass index, dietary habits and behavioural factors and its correlation with absenteeism. METHODS A cross sectional study was done on 270 adolescent females attending outpatient department of a suburban medical college. We interviewed the selected adolescent girls using a pretested semi structured questionnaire after obtaining their or their parents consent. Statistical analysis was done using frequencies, percentages and chi square test with statistical software package SPSS version 20. RESULTS Total 270 unmarried adolescent girls were interviewed. Among them 51.1 % girls suffered from dysmenorrhoea. 58.7 % patients suffered from mild dysmenorrhoea whereas 27.5 % and 13.8 % suffered from moderate and severe dysmenorrhoea respectively. 59.02 % of girls with normal BMI and 54.55 % of obese girls suffered from dysmenorrhoea. Only 16 % patients with mild dysmenorrhoea were absent from their school or college whereas 63.1 % and 84.2 % of patients with moderate to severe dysmenorrhoea had school or college absenteeism respectively. 74.47 % of patients used to take self-medication. CONCLUSIONS Dysmenorrhoea was a significant cause of absenteeism and habit of self-medication was prevalent. Introduction of a school health program for menstrual health might improve the issues. Cloutier, Renee M. "Social Anxiety and Non-Medical Prescription Stimulant Use Among College Students." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2016. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc849701/.

Full text
Abstract:
Current evidence suggests that non-medical prescription stimulant (NMPS) use is on the rise, particularly among college students. Identifying individuals at risk for regular and problematic use is a critical step towards the development of effective intervention efforts. A growing body of work has noted that individuals with elevated levels of social anxiety (SA) or social anxiety disorder are at an enhanced risk for developing substance use problems, including NMPS use disorder. Despite the relevance of SA and NMPS use among college students, no studies have attempted to examine subclinical SA or the relation between SA and NMPS use among college students specifically. Thus, the present study sought to extend this area by testing the relation of SA symptoms and NMPS use frequency among college students. A large online study of college students was conducted (N=1604) to identify 252 NMPS users (18-25 years; 68.3% female). A hierarchical linear regression was used to test the moderation of positive prescription stimulant expectancies on SA symptoms in predicting past year NMPS use frequency. A subsample of 15 participants was also brought into the lab to assess subjective (State Anxiety) and physiological (salivary cortisol) responding to a social stressor task. Overall, the current study did not provide evidence that SA, via retrospective self-report or real-time responding was related to past year NMPS use frequency. Additional research is needed to resolve the discrepancies between the present findings and prior work.

Schaffer, Lisa. "The Lived Experience of Transgender College-Aged Students Receiving Healthcare." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2015. http://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/318.

Full text
Abstract:
Background There is a relative dearth of information regarding transgender patient perceptions of healthcare provider interactions and experiences. Previous studies have examined the experiences of transgender patients across multiple generations. Purpose This research focuses on understanding the lived experience of transgender college-aged students receiving healthcare. The goal of this research is to help inform the practices of healthcare providers in order to improve care experiences. Methods Hermeneutic phenomenology was utilized to illuminate the lived experiences of three college-aged transgender patients receiving healthcare. Interviews were conducted with research participants. After transcription, interview content was read and re-read for significant statements. Significant statements were then grouped to identify themes. Results Theme 1: provider knowledge. Study participants noted that provider knowledge was associated with several behaviors and impacted their feelings regarding the experience and willingness to seek future healthcare. The trans-friendly provider was identified as a provider who uses preferred language, shares decision-making, and is aware of medical treatments. Theme 2: being defined. Study participants felt defined through a variety of provider interactions. These included experiences wherein providers question timelines of transition and question the patient regarding their identity using static terminology. Theme 3: loss of power. Participants noted the experience of loss of control when receiving healthcare. Loss of control was felt in a variety of ways including: loss of control over naming, identity, and care decisions. Conclusions This research begins to identify emerging themes expressed by transgender college-aged patients. By identifying these themes, future research can be conducted to further clarify patient feelings associated with their experiences in seeking healthcare in order to inform provider behaviors. More research is needed regarding transgender patient experiences receiving healthcare and whether these experiences impact health outcomes.

Westbrook, Ralph L. "Student Perceptions of Environmental Quality While Attending Accelerated Medical Technology College Courses." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6292.

Full text
Abstract:
Regional weather patterns in the southwestern United States frequently test the engineering involved in indoor air handling equipment in college facilities. Although an adequate indoor thermal environment has been found to affect student learning, little is known about students' perceptions of classroom heating and ventilation and impacts on learning. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how students in accelerated medical technology courses perceived the environmental quality in their classrooms and discern whether these conditions affected overall gains in knowledge, persistence, and retention in their learning. Fourteen participants from 2 local community colleges were interviewed using purposeful sampling. Guided by Nicol and Humphrey's adaptive heat model along with the theories of Maslow, Bandura, and Bronfenbrenner, the research questions centered on how students perceived the classroom environmental quality and its effects on their learning and well-being. Thematic analysis was used to reveal concerns about the operational state of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, their effect on classroom environmental quality and the student's ability to attend class. Interview responses indicated that positive indoor environmental conditions are essential to students' learning. Project study results led to the development of a white paper for collaborative use at each development forum. Positive implications for social change include increasing staff members' knowledge about improving and maintaining adequate indoor environmental quality to support overall student achievement.

Singleton, Myra Haney. "Evaluation of a College of Medicine Peer-Mentoring Program." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2488.

Full text
Abstract:
Peer-mentoring experiences in higher education have been largely effective largely effective, however institutions implement them differently. The focus of this program evaluation was a peer-mentoring program at a medical school in the southeastern region of the United States, which had not previously been evaluated. Guided by Kolb's experiential learning theory, the purpose of the evaluation in this study was to examine whether the peer-mentoring experience was perceived as helpful to new students and how students thought the program could be improved. The sequential mixed-method design consisted of a survey of 179 students and interviews of 8 students. A thematic analysis of qualitative data was completed using a constant comparative approach. The qualitative data revealed that students perceived the program as having had a positive effect on their confidence in succeeding in school. They felt more committed to completing school, were more likely to use resources, and reported that peer-mentoring positively affected their learning. The findings also provided recommendations for program refinement related to the selection process, increased opportunities for individual mentoring, systematic documentation for study strategies, and additional group activities. These recommendations were included in the evaluation report. Evaluation results have important implications for positive social change at the local college of medicine that include peer support to ensure retention, facilitated discussion on coping strategies and sources of support, and academic success for students.
