Many elements of foreign languages have been incorporated into Chinese throughout its long history. However, the issue of borrowing from a foreign language in Chinese is of great interest. The study of this problem, along with the theoretical, is of great practical importance. Ignorance of the methods of borrowing foreign vocabulary, its features and structure, the inability to distinguish sound borrowing from words of Chinese origin quite often confuses the translator and leads to semantic errors. Borrowing vocabulary can occur verbally (phonetic) and written (semantic). Loans in Chinese can

This paper presents a translingual study of medical lexicology in English and Japanese that compares the meaning and usage of three suffixes often found in medical discourse: -gram, -graph and -graphy. By means of an in-depth observation of frequency counts and semantic profiling in actual usage, we present a proposal regarding which roots each of the suffixes allow, together with an analysis of the meaning subtleties of the affixes. This work, informed by both cognitive and corpus linguistics, advances the presence of a concurrent pattern in English-Japanese morphology within medical discours

The thesis critically examines contemporary approaches to the problem of suicide and suicide prevention. An analytic strategy broadly Foucauldian in orientation (focusing on relations of power, knowledge and the subject) is employed to map the formation, consolidation and expansion of a 'regime of truth' centred on a compulsory ontology of pathology in relation to suicide. The conditions of possibility for such a regime, the site of its formation, the means by which relations of power and of power-knowledge acted to produce its truths and justify its practices, and its effects in terms of the

In 2006, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) recommended this increase in enrollment in response to concerns about a physician shortage. Unfortunately, the increase in the number of medical students enrolling in medical school may be good for society, but it may not be good for the health of medical students. Two broad questions are considered: (1) What were the possible and the preferred means of extending the Latin vocabulary in these technical areas in the first and the fifth century A.D.? (2) May any linguistic features be identified as proper or peculiar to Latin medical - or, more generally, technical - terminology? Underpinning all five areas is the recognition that human narratives remain crucial for ensuring the widest access to our shared past. There is no wish to see political and economic narratives abandoned but the need is recognised for there to be an expansion to more social narratives to fully explore the potential of the diverse evidence base.
