Abstract:
The present research aimed to investigate the Open Access (OA) and non-OA publishing models and the ArticleProcessing Charge (APC) in Iranian researchers’ articles. The study population included all researchers’ articlesfrom Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SBMU), Tehran, Iran, indexed in the Scopus database from2017-2019. The publication model of the articles was determined by referring to the original article, the type ofjournal, and their APC rate through the journal website, and the country of the journals’ publishers using the Scimago database. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and SPSS software. Five thousand ninety-seven articles (54.5 %) were published as OA and 4255 articles (45.5 %) as a non-OA. 57.1 % of OA articles were published in APC OA journals, 20.3 % in non-APC OA journals, and 11.7 % in hybrid journals. $ 4,899,027.15 was spent on publishing 3,506 OA articles; the average cost per article was $1,397.32. Publication costs for Iranian researchers are obstacles to publishing OA articles in APC journals. It is necessary to provide sufficient support to researchers by universities and the Ministry of Health and Medical Education of Iran. Considering the low economic capacity of Iranian researchers, international journals should also consider discounts for them.

Abstract:
Introduction: The National Health and Medical Research Council, Australia’s largest medical research funder, mandates open access for journal articles published from funded research. Publishing articles in fully open access journals is an acceptable route to achieve compliance. However, the total cost of article processing charges and the extent to which Council funds contribute to payment are unknown. Objectives: The main objectives of this study were to calculate the cost of article processing charges and determine the extent of acknowledgement of payment for Council-funded articles published in fully open access journals during 2019.Methods: The funding acknowledgement fields of Web of Science provided the list of Council-funded articles. The Directory of Open Access Journals identified fully open access journal titles and their article processing charges. Data analysisinvolved bibliometric research methods, principally descriptive statistics. Results: The cost of article processing charges for 2,261 articles published in 2019 was over US$5,000,000. Charges ranged from zero to US$5,200, with the median being US$1,900. The acknowledgement of payment of article processing chargeswas extremely low (1.72%).Discussion: The insufficient acknowledgement of the considerable expenditure on article processing charges is concerning. The “Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research” underscores the principles of transparency in declaringinterests. Required is greater disclosure of expenditure on article processing charges and accountability for public-funded research. Conclusion: The disclosure of article processing charge payments should be mandated by the Council and included in the publication metadata deposited in repositories under the National Health and Medical Research Council’s OpenAccess Policy. Acknowledgements and disclosures are essential in recognising professional contributions and ensuring the responsible conduct of research.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTA journal club is an educational meeting in which a group of individuals discuss published articles, to keep themselves abreast of new knowledge, promoting in them the awareness of current research findings, teaching them to critique and appraise research, and encourage them to utilize research in evidence based practice of the speciality. With so much of market driven research in journals the role of journal club becomes even more vital to differentiate a genuine recent advance from a clever but outright harmful rediscovery of the wheel which has been long discarded. Journal clubs can be department initiated or journal initiated and there are randomized control trials to prove that they improve reading habits, knowledge of epidemiology and statistics, and use of medical literature in practice. Choosing the journal club articles, assessing them and presenting them in the journal club meeting are all of vital importance and as a trainee advances in his training he/she is expected to imbibe the best from his seniors and peers in the club. I a journal club one is simply expected to summarize the research question, the methods, the results and the conclusions and not slavishly read through the article. It is the presenter's interpretation that is more important than actually rehashing the contents of the article.

Abstract:
Background. Journals are one of the channels of scientific communication among experts in the specialized fields of human knowledge as well as a tools for the rapid and widespread dissemination of new research achievements. It is important for founders of scientific journals to explore if the publications of the journal meet the performance of academic journals interms of subjects and collaboration of resarchers. The aim of this study was to analyze the scientometrics of a decade of activity of the Medical Journal of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. Methods. The method of this research was scientometric analysis. The statistical population of the study included articles published in Tabriz Medical Journal from 2010 to 2019, which are indexed in the Islamic World Science Citation Database (ISC). We analysed publications in Tabriz Medical Journal from 2010 to 2019. To collect the required data, the title of the journal was searched on the website of the Iranian Science Citation Index in the "Advanced Search" section by filtering the desired years. BibExcel, Ucinet, NetDraw and VOS-Weaver software were used for data analysis. Results. Seven hundred ninety-four articles written by 1947 authors were published in Tabriz Medical Journal. The authors' names were repeated a total of 3111 times in various articles. The average number of authors for each article was 3.92. The citation effect (average citation per article) was 0/36. Each article included an average of 21.56 citations. 31 of the 794 papers were single-author papers while 763 papers were published as scientific collaborations between two or more researchers. There were four authors in the co-authored template. The largest co-authorship network consisted of 92 authors. 2449 keywords were used to describe 794 articles. These keywords were repeated a total of 3118 times in various articles. The most common keywords included "children", "rat" and "polymorphism" with frequencies of 20, 19 and 17, respectively. Thematic clusters included "quality of life", "type 1 diabetes", "aerobic activity", "antibiotic resistance", "breast cancer", "type 2 diabetes", "cardiovascular disease", "drinking water" and "Stress and depression". Conclusion. The results of this study indicated the existence of a good status of scientific collaborations among authors based on the patterns of writing journal articles. All thematic clusters obtained were in compliance with the thematic axes or thematic specializations existing in the journal. The average citation per article was about 0/36 percent; thus, the status of the citation rate for the journal articles was not high enough. The index of journals in international databases has a positive effect on increasing the citation rate of journal articles. Therefore, it is suggested that new measures be taken to increase the visibility and impact factor of the journal. Background Journals are one of the channels of scientific communication amongexperts in the specialized fields of human knowledge as well as a tool for the rapid and widespread dissemination of new research achievements. On the other hand, scientometric studies are used as a practical and appropriate tool for better understanding and mapping of research processes and scientific research. Analysis of scientific output and products contributes greatly to the scientific development of various subject areas, and enables researchers to become acquainted with the scientific gaps in research areas, identify reputable people in this field, and expand their research topics with a more open mind. The aim of this study was to analyze the scientometrics of a decade of activity of the Medical Journal of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. Methods This study has used scientometrics analysis method and the social network analysis (SNA) approach. The statistical population of the study included articles published in Tabriz Medical Journal from 2010 to 2019, which are indexed in the Islamic World Science Citation Database (ISC). To collect the required data, the title of the journal was searched on the website of the Iranian Science Citation Index in the "Advanced Search" section by filtering the desired years. In order to prepare data for visualization and social network analysis, data processing was done using BibExcel software. In BibExcel the names of the authors and the keywords of the articles were matched with a format that is more frequent and logical in order to prevent their dispersion due to the multiplicity of writing formats. For example, keywords were examined in terms of plural and singular formats, use of synonymous words for a keyword, differences in written form, use of semicolons in some of them, and use of written English format. Also, the names of some authors were in several different formats, in order to prevent them from being counted as separate records in scientometrics software, they were modified and standardized to make the results more accurate, based on the most poular name of authors. "NetDraw" software was used to draw the co-authors' indexes of the article authors, Ucinet software was used to determine centrality degree, centrality betweenness and centrality closeness and the software (VOSViewer) was used to specify the co-occurrence network of keywords. To draw the thematic clustering network of journal articles, a threshold of 4 times repeating was considered eligibility criteria for keywords selection. By drawing thematic clusters, the thematic topics of the journal subset were identified. Results Seven hundred ninety-four articles have been published in Tabriz Medical Journal within this period. The number of authors was 1947. Also, the names of the authors have been repeated a total of 3111 times in various articles. The average number of authors for each article was 3.92. The citation effect (average citation per article) was 0/36. Out of all authors, only 122 articles (15.36%) received citations and had an H-index. This means that at least one of their articles has been cited at least once and 672 authors (84.63%) have not received any citation from any of their articles, and they do not have an H-index. The results showed that there were 21.56 sources for each article. According to the results, only 31 out of 794 articles were single-author articles and 763 articles were produced as scientific collaborations between two or more researchers. There were four authors in the co-authored template. The complete co-authorship network consists of 99 authors, each of whom has had at least 5 articles in this journal during the period. The network consists of three clusters with different numbers of nodes, which had 2 and 5 researchers, respectively, with the largest co-authorship network consisting of 92 authors. The Rank Centrality Index reflects the activity and reputation of a node among other nodes in the network. The use of Centrality Betweenness Index is to facilitate understanding how a given node is positioned in the shortest path among other nodes in the network. The Centrality Closeness Index (shorter path) of one factor relates to all other factors; it measures the centrality closeness distance of a node from the other nodes in the network, and provides the average length of the shortest path between that node and the other nodes in the network.Morteza Ghojazadeh had the highest centrality in all three indicators of centrality (degree, betweenness and Closeness). In describing 794 articles, 2449 keywords have been used, which have been repeated 3118 times in different articles. In total, 89 homonymous pairs were accompanied by a frequency of 1 to 4 times. The word pair "Escherichia coli - PCR" with a frequency of 4 had the most repetition. The synonymous network of repetitive keywords of the medical journal indicated the existence of 9 thematic clusters during the years 2010 to 2019. The largest thematic cluster consisted of 8 keywords and the smallest thematic cluster consisted of 2 keywords. The thematic clusters were: "Quality of life", "Type 1 diabetes", "Aerobic activity", "Antibiotic resistance", "Breast cancer", "Type 2 diabetes", "Cardiovascular disease", "Drinking water" And "Anxiety and Depression." Conclusion The results of this study indicated the existence of a good status of scientific collaborations between authors based on the patterns of writing journal articles. All thematic clusters obtained were in compliance with the thematic axes or the existing thematic specializations in the journal. The average citation per article is about 0/36 percent; thus, the status of the citation rate for the journal articles was not high enough. The index of journals in international databases has a positive effect on increasing the citation rate of journal articles. Therefore, it is suggested that new measures be taken to increase the visibility and impact factor of the journal. Practical implications of research According to the results of the present study, it can be stated that in order to draw a long-term perspective and formulate a strategy for the development of journals, it is necessary to evaluate journals with quantitative and qualitative scientometric indicators, and plannings for the future should be done by taking into account the results of journals in the past. Ethical Considerations The present study was extracted from the master's thesis of Knowledge and Information Science approved by Payame Noor University, Tonekabon branch, number 11112397. Conflict of Interests The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest. Acknowledgment We would like to thank all people who helped us.

Abstract:
This work addresses the need for an alternative to keyword-based search for sifting through large PDF medical journal article document collections for literature review purposes. Despite users' best efforts to form precise and accurate queries, it is often difficult to guess the right keywords to find all the related articles while finding a minimum number of unrelated ones. Failure during literature review to find relevant, related research results in wasted research time and effort in addition to missing significant work in the related area which could affect the quality of the research work being conducted. The purpose of this work is to explore the benefits of a retrieval system for professional journal articles in PDF format that supports hybrid queries composed of both text and images. PDF medical journal articles contain formatting and layout information that imply the structure and organization of the document. They also contain figures and tables rich with content and meaning. Stripping a PDF into “full-text” for indexing purposes disregards these important features. Specifically, this work investigated the following: (1) what effect the incorporation of a document's embedded figures into the query (in addition to its text) has on retrieval performance (precision) compared to plain keyword-based search; (2) how current text-based document-query similarity methods can be enhanced by using formatting and font-size information as a structure and organization model for a PDF document; (3) whether to use the standard Euclidean distance function or the matrix distance function for content-based image retrieval; (4) how to convert a PDF into a structured, formatted, reflowable XML representation given a pure-layout PDF document; (5) what document views (such as a term frequency cloud, a document outline, or a document's figures) would help users wade through search results to quickly select those that are worth a closer look. While the results of the experiments were unexpectedly worse than their baselines of comparison (see the conclusion for a summary), the experimental methods are very valuable in showing others what directions have already been pursued and why they did not work and what remaining problems need to be solved in order to achieve the goal of improving literature review through use of a hybrid text and image retrieval system.

Abstract:
AbstractAlthough India is the second-largest country in the world where the English language is spoken, we often use it incorrectly and tend to be verbose. When it comes to writing skills, we use convoluted phrases and complex words when simple ones would do. A medical paper does not need to be written in theatrical or Shakespearean English. We should express ourselves using short words and simple sentences which convey to a reader why we did the study, how we did it, what the results were and whether they are important, what is known about the subject and what your paper adds. Often, even if your article contains good science it may be rejected by Western journals because you did not state clearly what you wanted to convey. We need to improve not only our scientific endeavours but also our writing skills to be accepted for publication in the world’s best journals.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article explores the visual grammatical implications of contemporary digital photo manipulation. The rapid and broad distribution of photographs via social media is leading to the conventionalisation of new social practices in photography (Johannessen & Boeriis, Visual Communication 20, 527–551, 2021), including the widespread use of image filters and other types of image manipulation. The smartphone camera has become a constantly available augmentation of our sensory motor apparatus and of our social environment (Blaagaard, Visual Communication 12, 359–374, 2013; Frosh, International Journal of Communication 9, 1607–1628, 2015; Han et al., 2017) and, consequently, manipulated photography is becoming an almost dialogical practice of expressing thoughts and emotions in real-time among individuals on a potentially very large scale (Boeriis, Discourse, Context & Media 41, 28–40, 2021).From a point of departure in multimodal social semiotics (Hodge & Kress, 1988; Kress & van Leeuwen, Multimodal discourse: The modes and Media of Contemporary Communication. Hodder Arnold, 2001), this article explores how different visual meaning-making resources are involved in manipulating digital photographs. Kress and van Leeuwen’s visual grammar (2020) serves as a framework for the analysis and discussion of the options available for photo manipulation in digital software, both specialised for social media (e.g. Instagram or FaceApp) and for professional photography (e.g. Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom). Thus, the article unfolds the meaning-making of photo manipulations by relating different effects to the grammatical categories affected by different adjustments.

Abstract Hasson provides an examination of menstrual suppression technologies and the implications they have on understanding menstruation as both quintessentially natural and socially constructed, and even what ‘counts’ as menstruation. Taking the case of birth control pills, Hasson studies menstrual suppression by analyzing medical journal articles, FDA advisory committee transcripts, and website marketing. Across these contexts, she finds that new definitions of ‘menstruation’ converge on the distinction between bleeding that occurs when women are taking hormonal birth control and when they are not. Finally, Hasson draws attention to the concept of redefining a biological process that is deeply significant for gendered embodiment, as well as a challenge to consider both the social and material construction of gendered bodies.

Abstract:
AbstractThe virtual National Health Insurance (NHI) card not only represents digitization but also enables contactless health care during the pandemic. Under the process of full-scale digitization, the National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA) continues to refine the health service delivery measures, especially in the field of home-based medical care and telemedicine.Under the personal data protection regulation, the NHI data are opened for academic research purposes. More than 6550 published journal articles have utilized the NHI data, and these articles are made searchable online to support health policy management and clinical research. The NHI medical images combined with the application of artificial intelligence (AI) are the cornerstones of Taiwan’s smart health care. Domestic research teams are eligible to use the NHI database to verify or build their AI models after their research proposals are approved by the Management Council of the AI Application of NHI Data. The NHIA also plans to use NHI big data to develop digital patient decision aids by establishing a two-way digital interaction model to address the concerns of the healthcare providers and the public. By comparing the secondary use of health data in different countries, Taiwan is seeking a balance between innovation and conservative policies and is creating an environment that ensures the well-being of the next generation.

Abstract The Medical Critic was a 3s. 6d. specialist quarterly that ran under various titles from 1848 to 1863. Its editor, Forbes Winslow, was the president of the Medical Society of London and a journalist for The Times. He was also a noted ‘alienist’ (doctor for the mad) who advocated the new ‘humane’ methods of treatment through books and articles. The extract here is from an article that may well have been written by Winslow. The complete article commences by remarking on the sensation novel as a worthwhile topic for the new science of psychology before dismissing the commonplace ways such works are described.

Abstract:
The Serbian Journal of the Medical Chamber is published by the Medical Chamber of Serbia, with the University of Belgrade Institute for Medical Research as co-publisher. The Journal annually publishes a minimum of forty previously unpublished original scientific research articles, professional papers, reviews, short communications, editorials, meta-analyses, case reports, and other articles, in all areas of medicine, pharmacy, and dental medicine, in both Serbian and English. It is published four times a year under an open-access policy, using a double-blind peer-review process, and is available in both print and electronic formats. The Journal fosters continued professional development and free and open exchange of scientific knowledge, research results, breakthroughs, and clinical experience by providing open, free-ofcharge, and unlimited access to all articles immediately upon online publication and charging no fees for article submission or processing. Eminent national and international academicians, professors, and experts constitute the Editorial Board, Advisory Board, and Editorial Office of the Journal. In 2023, the Journal received the M54 categorization from the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation of the Republic of Serbia. It is indexed by the Serbian Citation Index, and data on the Journal can be found on KoBSON. Responding to one of the greatest global public health challenges in modern history, the Journal dedicated one of its earlier issues to the COVID-19 pandemic, inviting medical professionals to contribute to the understanding of this disease by sharing research results and clinical experience. The Journal continues to provide a platform for various nationally, regionally, and internationally relevant public health issues by publishing articles focusing on topics such as HIV/AIDS, smoking, immunization, infectious disease control, preventive measures in primary health care, the prevalence of depression, non-medical prescription drug use, safety and health issues pertaining to the medical profession, etc. Celebrating the fourth anniversary of its first issue, as a relatively new journal, the Serbian Journal of the Medical Chamber strives to complement the activity of other Serbian medical journals with a much longer and more established tradition, such as the Serbian Journal of Public Health, published by the Institute of Public Health of Serbia Dr Milan Jovanović Batut.

Melnyk, Yuriy. Academic Journal Website Model. KRPOCH, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.26697/preprint.melnyk.1.2018.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The tens of thousands of academic journal websites that are on the Internet today often do not have a clear organizational structure for their website. If most of them are convenient enough for readers (if the journal is open access), then many have problems informing authors about the conditions, the process of submitting and reviewing the manuscript. The Editorial Offices empirically populate the journal's website with content that can change dramatically (both in terms of website design and content) as the journal develops. Aim of Study: To develop a website model for an academic journal that takes into account the basic requirements for the preparation, publication, and archiving of high quality scientific manuscripts. Material and Methods: The academic journal website model is based on a structural-functional approach. The website content consists of text and integrated applications. This model takes into account the basic requirements for the preparation, publication, and archiving of high-quality open access scientific manuscripts, as well as the indexing of journal articles by leading indexing agencies. Results: The academic journal website model is structured with the following menu and submenu elements: 1. HOME: 1.1. Journal information; 1.2. From the editorial office; 1.3. Databases, Indexing; 2. EDITORIAL BOARD: 2.1. Editorial board; 2.2. Reviewers; 2.3. Editing and reviewing process; 3. EDITORIAL POLICIES: 3.1. Editorial policies; 3.2. Plagiarism policy; 3.3. Open access policy; 3.4. The ethics codex of scientific publications; 3.5. Disclaimer; 3.6. License terms; 3.7. Terms of publications (fee); 4. ARCHIV: 4.1. Previous issues; 4.2. Current issue; 4.3. Articles online first; 5. INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS: 5.1. General recommendations; 5.2. Manuscript templates; 5.3. Supplemental materials; 6. STATISTICS: 6.1. Publications; 6.2. Authors; 6.3. Readers; 7. CONTACTS: 7.1. Contact; 7.2. Subscriptions; 7.3. Search. Conclusions: This academic journal website model was implemented for the International Journal of Science Annals (IJSA). Authors and readers of IJSA noted the advantages of the model proposed by the author, including: a convenient and understandable website interface, the availability of the necessary hyperlinks to the pages of the journal's website and external media (sites of indexed agencies, library archives, etc.), convenient search for information on the website and published in the journal articles (by author, publication, text of the article), availability of integrated applications (online submission of manuscripts, filing appeals against the decision of reviewers and complaints about published articles, viewing the interactive printed version of the journal, etc.), availability of templates (for authors, reviewers), availability of multiple formats for archiving articles (PDF, DOAJ, XML, TXT), the ability to choose the style of citing the article and the website language (English, Ukrainian), etc. Keywords: journal, model, website, academic, indexing

Langlais, Pierre-Carl. Diamond open access. Comité pour la science ouverte, 2023. https://doi.org/10.52949/77.

Full text
Abstract:
Contrary to a widespread belief that open access publications are paid by their authors, a significant amount of scientific articles are published with no fees to both readers and authors (or “Diamond” model). In 2021, it is estimated that between 17,000 and 29,000 scientific journals rely on a Diamond model. 73% of the journals registered in the Directory of Open Access Journals charge no fee. The Diamond model is attested on a world wide scale. It is especially prevalent in Latin America (95% of journals) following the emergence of large publicly-supported platforms, such as SciELO and Redalyc and to a lesser extent in Eastern Europe and South-East Asian countries like Indonesia. Diamond journals are frequently embedded in local communities of researchers, non-academic professionals and private citizens: they play an important role in the circulation of knowledge and in the preservation of linguistic diversity in science. Diamond journals are an efficient economic model. The median cost per article is estimated at $200, or 1/6th of the expenses of commercial journals. Most of their funding is covered by a variety of non-commercial support: recurrent funding, grants, technical support, volunteer work. Diamond journals are also less productive than commercial journals. They represent a lower output of academic articles overall, making up less than half of all publications indexed by the Directory of Open Access Journals. While the concept of “diamond journal” was only introduced in 2011, community-owned scientific journals have a long history. A variety of common-based structures from subsidized university publishers to volunteer-run cooperatives have existed for decades and been revived by the development of open science in the late 1990s. Reliance on communities is one of the main strengths of Diamond journals. Although they are measurably a major model of open science publishing, diamond journals have long been little acknowledged by academic policies and funders. Leading indexes like the Web of Science or Scopus tend to favor commercial publications. Archiving has been identified as a major concern, as several publications can remain unnoticed from the main preservation initiatives. In 2022, new national and international policies, such as the UNESCO recommendation on open science, or the action plan for diamond Open Access supported by cOAlition S aims to support the development of Diamond journal. Diamond journals are increasingly part of an emerging ecosystem of “scientific commons” alongside open science infrastructures, free academic software, open data programs or open metrics.

Abstract:
The US Supreme Court’s June 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization eliminated the federal constitutional right to abortion in the United States. This report provides a topline summary of the emerging body of research measuring the likely impact of the Dobbs decision on outcomes in four areas: abortion services and access, abortion incidence, incidence of births and contraceptive use. To locate peer-reviewed studies, we searched three academic databases (Google Scholar, PubMed and JSTOR) using the terms “abortion” AND (“Dobbs” OR “Roe”) and limited our summary to study findings published by April 30, 2024. Fewer than 10 peer-reviewed journal articles examining the impact of this legal decision had been published by that date (in part because the peer-review process can take months or years). Some studies were published in other formats, and we relied on internet searches, media coverage and institutional knowledge to locate the studies that had not been published in peer-reviewed journals. We also examined the references cited in research studies located by these searches. This report does not include every research publication we found (see Appendix below for a list of additional studies) and is limited to those most relevant to the four topic areas mentioned above. Our summary includes: 9 articles published in peer-reviewed journals 1 manuscript undergoing peer review and available via preprint 13 online reports, discussion papers and policy analyses Since April 30, 2024, additional studies have been published and many more are on the horizon. The studies summarized here reflect only the beginning of what will be a substantial body of research that provides valuable insights into how specific states’ policies affect their residents’ reproductive health and autonomy under changed conditions after the Dobbs decision.

Marcellino, Massimiliano, and Dalibor Stevanovic. The demand and supply of information about inflation. CIRANO, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.54932/djgr5759.

Full text
Abstract:
In this article we study how the demand and supply of information about inflation affect inflation developments. As a proxy for the demand of information, we extract Google Trends (GT) for keywords such as "inflation", "inflation rate", or "price increase". The rationale is that when agents are more interested about inflation, they should search for information about it, and Google is by now a natural source. As a proxy for the supply of information about inflation, we instead use an indicator based on a (standardized) count of the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) articles containing the word "inflat" in their title. We find that measures of demand (GT) and supply (WSJ) of inflation information have a relevant role to understand and predict actual inflation developments, with the more granular information improving expectation formation, especially so during periods when inflation is very high or low. In particular, the full information rational expectation hypothesis is rejected, suggesting that some informational rigidities exist and are waiting to be exploited. Contrary to the existing evidence, we conclude that the media communication and agents attention do play an important role for aggregate inflation expectations, and this remains valid also when controlling for FED communications.

Abstract:
Leading up to the 2024 European Parliament election, much attention was given to the anticipated gains of populist parties across Europe. While some populist parties made significant advances, the overall outcome was more moderate than expected. Sweden deviated from this general trend, witnessing gains for left-wing parties and a surprising setback for the populist radical right. The 2024 elections marked a historic decline for the Sweden Democrats, the first instance since their formation in 1988 that they regressed in comparison to previous national and European Parliament elections. This decline is particularly notable following their strong performance in the 2022 national elections, where they became Sweden’s second-largest party. This article examines these developments, drawing on existing research, media reports and exit polls, with a focus on the Sweden Democrats’ campaign strategies, election results and voter behaviour. The article concludes with a discussion of the implications of these election outcomes for both Swedish domestic politics and the broader European political landscape. Full text
Abstract:
The article clarifies of gender identity stereotypes in modern media. The main gender stereotypes covered in modern mass media are analyzed and refuted. The model of gender relations in the media is reflected mainly in the stereotypical images of men and woman. The features of the use of gender concepts in modern periodicals for women and men were determined. The most frequently used derivatives of these macroconcepts were identified and analyzed in detail. It has been found that publications for women and men are full of various gender concepts that are used in different contexts. Ingeneral, theanalysisofthe concept-maximums and concept-minimum gender and their characteristics is carried out in the context of gender stereotypes that have been forme dand function in the society, system atizing the a ctual presentations. The study of the gender concept is relevant because it reveals new trends and features of modern gender images. Taking into account the special features of gender-labeled periodicals in general and the practical absence of comprehensive scientific studies of the gender concept in particular, there is a need to supplement Ukrainian science with this topic. Gender psychology, which is served by methods of various sciences, primarily sociological, pedagogical, linguistic, psychological, socio-psychological. Let us pay attention to linguistic and psycholinguistic methods in gender studies. Linguistic methods complement intelligence research tasks, associated with speech, word and text. Psycholinguistic methods used in gender psychology (semantic differential, semantic integral, semantic analysis of words and texts), aimed at studying speech messages, specific mechanisms of origin and perception, functions of speech activity in society, studying the relationship between speech messages and gender properties participants in the communication, to analyze the linguistic development in connection with the general development of the individual. Nowhere in gender practice there is the whole arsenal of psychological methods that allow you to explore psychological peculiarities of a person like observation, experiments, questionnaires, interviews, testing, modeling, etc. The methods of psychological self-diagnostics include: the gender aspect of the own socio-psychological portrait, a gender biography as a variant of the biographical method, aimed at the reconstruction of individual social experience. In the process of writing a gender autobiography, a person can understand the characteristics of his gender identity, as well as ways and means of their formation. Socio-psychological methods of studying gender include the study of socially constructed women’s and men’s roles, relationships and identities, sexual characteristics, psychological characteristics, etc. The use of gender indicators and gender approaches as a means of socio-psychological and sociological analysis broadens the subject boundaries of these disciplines and makes them the subject of study within these disciplines. And also, in the article a combination of concrete-historical, structural-typological, system-functional methods is implemented. Descriptive and comparative methods, method of typology, modeling are used. Also used is a method of content analysis for the study of gender content of modern gender-stamped journals. It was he who allowed quantitatively to identify and explore the features of the gender concept in the pages of periodicals for women and men. A combination of historical, structural-typological, system-functional methods is also implemented in the article. Descriptive and comparative methods, method of typology, modeling are used. A method of content analysis for the study of gender content of modern gender-labeled journals is also used. It allowed to identify and explore the features of the gender concept quantitatively in the periodicals for women and men. The conceptual perception and interpretation of the gender concept «woman», which is highlighted in the modern gender-labeled press in Ukraine, requires the elaboration of the polyfunctionality of gender interpretations, the comprehension of the metaphorical perception of this image and its role and purpose in society. A gendered approach to researching the gender content of contemporary periodicals for women and men. Conceptual analysis of contemporary gender-stamped publications within the gender conceptual sphere allows to identify and correlate the meta-gender and gender concepts that appear in society.

Briand, Etienne, Massimiliano Marcellino, and Dalibor Stevanovic. Inflation, Attention and Expectations. CIRANO, 2025. https://doi.org/10.54932/qxot2239.

Full text
Abstract:
We investigate the role of attention in shaping inflation dynamics. To measure the general public attention, we utilize Google Trends (GT) data for keywords such as "inflation." For professional attention, we construct an indicator based on the standardized count of Wall Street Journal (WSJ) articles with "inflation" in their titles. Through empirical analysis, we show that attention significantly impacts inflation dynamics, even when accounting for traditional inflation-related factors. Macroeconomic theory suggests that expectations formation is a natural mechanism to explain these findings. We find support for this hypothesis by measuring a decrease in professional forecasters’ information rigidity during periods of high attention. In contrast to prior research, our findings highlight the critical roles of media communication and public attention in shaping aggregate inflation expectations. We then develop a theoretical model that captures our stylized facts, showing that both inflation dynamics and forecaster expectations are regime-dependent. Finally, we examine the implications of this framework for the effectiveness of monetary policy.

The aim of the study is to conduct a systematic analysis of gender stereotypes of femininity in the literary almanac. The article employs the following methods: theoretical – for studying gender theory, stereotyping, and their application in the analysis of the content of the periodical; systemic-structural analysis – for conducting a systematic analysis of the social roles of femininity in the almanac «Kurier Kryvbasu»; structural-typological – for studying the content and structure of the literary almanac; descriptive method - for interpreting women’s roles and stereotypes. Main findings. The role of gender stereotypes in representing women in the media texts of contemporary Ukrainian writers in the pages of the periodical almanac «Kurier Kryvbasu» has been elucidated. A systematic analysis of feminine social roles, including the beautiful woman, the businesswoman, the happy woman, the sex symbol, and the wife-mother, is presented. The social roles and stereotypes of femininity in the literary almanac «Kurier Kryvbasu» are interpreted according to the classification of G. Kovalova and V. Danilyan. Conclusions. In the almanac «Kurier Kryvbasu», entrenched perceptions regarding women’s model appearance, their frivolity and accessibility, professional inferiority, sexual objectification, competent housekeeping, maternal duties, and the pursuit of illusory «female happiness» in the form of marriage, family, and children are used. However, a trend of feminist rise is observed, where the pages of the magazine describe women’s career successes, self-actualization, participation in military actions, etc. Significance. The analysis of gender stereotypes, both femininity and masculinity, in Ukrainian literary-artistic periodicals is important for the development of the contemporary media sphere, as such research will encourage editorial teams to direct media content towards gender balance and gender equality. Key words: gender stereotypes, social role, femininity, journal, literary magazine, media text.
