Abstract:
Background: This study investigates suicide literacy, help-seeking attitudes, and related factors among medical residents. Methods: The study utilized a cross-sectional design and included all medical residents in Kerman University of Medical Sciences in 2023‒2024. We obtained demographic information, psychiatric history, and administered questionnaires about literacy of suicide (LOSS) and the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help (ATSPPH-SF). Results: A total of 157 residents with a mean age of 28.97±2.55 years participated. The prevalence of any psychiatric history was 17.83% (95% CI: 12.1‒23.56). Notably, more educated males displayed higher suicidal literacy (95% CI: 0.231‒0.567, P=0.032), while there was no significant difference in help-seeking attitudes between genders (P=0.755). Surgical residents scored lower than non-surgical specialties like pediatrics (mean difference=2.63, 95% CI: 0.23-5.03, P=0.023, effect size d=0.589). Older age positively correlated with help-seeking attitudes (r=0.158, P=0.049). Additionally, marital status, residency level, history of psychiatric illnesses and their types, previous use of psychiatric medications, and history of self-harm or suicide had no significant impact on suicide literacy scores or attitude toward help-seeking. A moderate association (r=0.367) was found between the suicide literacy and help-seeking attitude questionnaire scores. Conclusion: Despite relatively high suicide literacy, medical residents displayed average help-seeking attitudes, positioning them as a high-risk group. Urgent interventions are needed to enhance awareness of the importance of psychological support and to reduce stress and work pressure, indirectly mitigating the risk of suicide in this vulnerable population.

Abstract:
Abstract: In some cultures, psychological problems and treatment are mostly not considered as important as medical illnesses. This is generally because of people's attitudes toward mental disorders and psychotherapeutic interventions. The current study involved 2702 Muslims from Pakistan. The study measured attitudes towards mental health through different dimensions. These mainly included attitudes toward mental health, attitudes towards mental disorders, attitudes towards medical illnesses, attitudes towards mentally disturbed, attitudes towards seeking psychological help for self, attitudes towards seeking psychological help for families, attitudes towards seeking psychological help for children, and attitudes towards seeking psychological help for friends. The understudied population had positive attitudes toward mental health and psychotherapy. A significant difference was found between people's attitudes towards medical illnesses and mental disorders. Attitudes based on gender, age, education, marriage, profession, and income were also significantly different. The findings of this study lead mental health practitioners and policymakers to modify their strategies for encouraging more clientele to the existing mental health facilities.

Abstract:
Literature Review : A critical review of the literature was made to investigate what influences an individual’s intention to seek psychological help for mental ill health. Nineteen articles were retrieved that met the inclusion criteria. The articles were reviewed, critiqued and synthesised to answer the review question. Four key themes were identified: ; a) mental health services are underutilised and understanding help-seeking intentions and behaviour is of paramount importance for mental health professionals, b) current measures of help-seeking have significant shortcomings and comprehensive, theory driven instruments are needed, c) help-seeking is more likely to be a global concept and does not vary in relation to type of problem, although it may vary with population specific characteristics, and d) instruments used to measure help-seeking intention should be constructed with the development of interventions in mind. Clinical implications and direction for future research are discussed. Research Report : In order to understand psychological help-seeking intention for mental health problems in medical students the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) model was used. Thirty-nine medical students took part in an elicitation study to obtain attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control for psychological help-seeking. Eighty medical students took part in the quantitative TPB questionnaire that was developed as part of the methodology. The TPB model was found to significantly predict help-seeking intentions. The limitations of the research are discussed and suggestions for future research presented Critical Appraisal : Finally, an appraisal of the research process as a whole was made with a critique of the research methodology. The author’s reflections on conducting an independent research project are presented and learning points highlighted.

Abstract:
Observational studies have shown that medical and dental students have poor psychological health worldwide; however, few interventional studies have been used to test approaches to help students. This thesis used a randomised control trial study design to evaluate the effect of a self-development coaching program on psychological health and the academic performance among medical and dental students in Saudi Arabia. The outcomes indicated that these medical and dental students in Saudi Arabia experienced high levels of depression, anxiety and stress, and that the self-development coaching program was a promising intervention to improve students' psychological health.

Abstract:
碩士
慈濟大學
公共衛生學系碩士班
102
Unlike most people, Truku people rarely seek immediate medical help when feeling discomfort or in pain. In order to explore the psychosocial factors that affect Truku people’s decisions in seeking medical help, I interviewed 22 Truku tribal people living in JIA-WAN Tribe area in Shlin Township in Hualien county. Results of these interviews showed that they were unlikely to seek medical help unless the physical pain had impaired their bodily functions or had interfered with their daily routines. Also, most respondents value their inner feelings greatly, the feeling of warmth form interpersonal relationships in particular. This feeling came form multiple sources and circumstances, such as: the comfort from companionship or care from family members, the intimacy and friendliness from a doctor who is of the same tribe, and a sense of belonging and security form staying in the tribal area. These feeling originated from the emotional involvement that connected tribal people. When there is a chance of cutting off this emotional bonding, respondents were reluctant to seek medical help. Although the data reported here solely based on from the medical help seeking experiences of Truku people in one tribal area, it reflects their true thoughts regarding decisions to seek medical help. Hence, the findings of this study still have substantial reference value for researchers interested in indigenous peoples’ health or for public health professionals engaged in health promotion in tribal indigenous communities.

Abstract:
Perceptions of health and illness which include the perceived cause and recourse play an important role in diagnosis and management of illness. Traditional and allopathic medicines are used simultaneously and sometimes without the knowledge of the health professional and this has an impact on clinical outcomes. Overlooking patients’ subjective experience, health providers’ biases and prejudice may pose a negative impact on clinical outcomes. This study explores patients’, traditional healers’ and psychological counselors’ perception of illness by conducting interviews and administering open-ended questionnaires. The data is analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively through the use of content analysis and non-parametric statistical procedures. The results indicate that the concept of illness is complex and multidimensional with physical and socio-spiritual aspects. Effective management requires a joint approach between indigenous and western health systems. The results further show that traditional healers fully embrace the integrated health approach while there is some skepticism and uncertainty from psychological counselors which could be stemming from their training. There is still work to be done in terms of health planning and policy but also the training of health professionals.
Thesis (M.Soc.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2008.

Abstract:
Sexual dysfunction is a prevalent complication among individuals with diabetes mellitus, affecting both men and women. In men, diabetes can lead to erectile dysfunction due to damage to blood vessels and nerves that regulate blood flow to the penis. Additionally, decreased testosterone levels and psychological factors like stress or depression contribute to this issue. Women with diabetes often experience reduced sexual desire, decreased vaginal lubrication, and difficulty achieving orgasm. Similar to men, nerve damage, hormonal imbalances, and psychological factors play significant roles in sexual dysfunction among diabetic women. Overall, managing diabetes through proper glycemic control, lifestyle modifications, and medical interventions can help mitigate the risk and severity of sexual dysfunction in affected individuals.

Abstract:
AbstractAlthough the social structure of Turkish society has changed from a broad family order to a nuclear family, family relations still hold an important place, where traditional elements dominate. Still, elderly people are cared for by their family in their home environment. Thus, the role of family members is crucial in taking care of elderly individuals. In Turkey, the responsibility of care is largely on women; the elderly’s wife, daughter, or daughter-in-law most often provides the care. Family members who provide care need support so that they can maintain their physical, psychological and mental health. At this point, Antonovsky’s salutogenic health model represents a positive and holistic approach to support individual’s health and coping. The salutogenic understanding of health emphasizes both physical, psychological, social, spiritual and cultural resources which can be utilized not only to avoid illness, but to promote health. With the rapidly increasing ageing population globally, health expenditures and the need for care are increasing accordingly. This increase reveals the importance of health-promoting practices in elderly care, which are important for the well-being and quality of life of older individuals and their families, as well as cost effectiveness. In Turkey, the emphasis on health-promoting practices is mostly focused in home-care services including examination, treatment, nursing care, medical care, medical equipment and device services, psychological support, physiotherapy, follow-up, rehabilitation services, housework (laundry, shopping, cleaning, food), personal care (dressing, bathroom, and personal hygiene help), 24-h emergency service, transportation, financial advice and training services within the scope of the social state policy for the elderly 65 years and older, whereas medical management of diseases serves elderly over the age of 85. In the Turkish health care system, salutogenesis can be used in principle for two aims: to guide health-promotion interventions in health care practice, and to (re)orient health care practice and research. The salutogenic orientation encompasses all elderly people independently of their position on the ease-/dis-ease continuum. This chapter presents health-promotion practices in the care of elderly home-dwelling people living in Turkey.

Abstract:
AbstractSince the Oregon Death with Dignity Act was adopted in 1997, an increasing number of people have requested euthanasia, showing that life has become unbearable for them. However, a person who expresses the wish to die by euthanasia is not saying that he/she prefers death to life, but rather that death seems preferable to life under the actual circumstances. In order to respond to a person’s suffering, we need to understand the nature of that suffering, as they experience it. Suffering may be physical, psychological, relational, spiritual, or existential; frequently these different aspects overlap or intermingle, particularly in a serious illness. Euthanasia does not improve life—it ends it by giving death. But when the response involves listening and accepting the person in his/her present situation, it becomes possible to work together with the person to see what can be done to help reduce suffering. We can look for means of relief for the person’s individual, unique suffering, in partnership with the patient and his/her family and friends, using the resources of both medical knowledge and our shared humanity. The willingness to walk on this shared path with the sick person is in itself an affirmation of his/her human dignity.

Abstract:
AbstractOlder people with fragility fractures are a diverse group, and their care needs are complex. Although some have comparatively few health problems, many have several interconnected illnesses alongside psychological and social problems, requiring a range of interventions. The primary focus of care is to meet these needs throughout the care pathway and ensure that they receive the same high standard of specialist care within orthopaedic services as they would within a setting specialising in the care of older people. The central philosophy is holistic care with a person-centred approach that brings the various aspects of specialist care together.‘Geriatric syndrome’ is a term often used to refer to common health problems in older adults that do not fit into distinct organ-specific disease categories and that have multifactorial causes. This includes frailty, cognitive impairment, delirium, incontinence, malnutrition, falls, gait disorders, pressure ulcers, sleep disorders, sensory deficits, fatigue and dizziness. These are common in older adults and can have a major impact on quality of life (QoL) and disability.Identifying problems specific to ageing so that interventions can be tailored to meet the needs of patients with fragility fractures needs a detailed and comprehensive assessment that can help clinicians manage these conditions and prevent or delay their complications. This needs to be a collaboration of the whole interdisciplinary team so that the skills of each team member can contribute to building a picture of the patient’s needs. Nursing assessment is a significant part of this whole.A term often used in relation to the assessment of older people with medical needs is comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA). The aim of this chapter is to explore the nature of comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) for the patient with a fragility fracture and discuss how this can be applied to nursing assessment and care.

Abstract:
Patients have minds as well as bodies, and medical treatment must often address both if it is to be effective. Psychological treatments—these may be divided into general and specialist types. All medical consultations have an important and inescapable psychological effect, hence all physicians are general psychotherapists. All medical consultations have the potential for both psychological help and for harm. Helpful consultations educate the patient, reassure them, and achieve adherence to treatment. Harmful consultations leave the patient confused or with inaccurate ideas about their health, increase anxiety, and make adherence to the physician’s treatment less likely. Being able to deliver a psychologically helpful consultation is therefore a core medical skill....

Abstract:
The chapter is devoted to some aspects of psychological assistance to students at a medical university. This topic is currently very relevant for a number of reasons that can lead to the need for psychological support and even help for students: from some aspects of the learning process itself at a medical university, which is quite complex, especially due to the introduction of new State training standards, as well as modernization and optimization processes covering the medical environment and the medical education environment in particular; to the complex processes occurring in society, especially against the background of the pandemic of the new coronavirus infection COVID-19. The purpose of the study was an attempt to analyze the awareness of future doctors about the free psychological help and support existing at the university, as well as to evaluate some aspects of psychological support for medical students. The subjects of the study were 200 students of the Faculty of Medicine of VSMU named after. N.N. Burdenko, divided into 2 groups of 100 people. The 1st group included 100 representatives of the 2nd year of the Faculty of Medicine, while the 2nd group included representatives of the 6th year of the Faculty of Medicine. The authors developed and implemented a specialized questionnaire covering questions of general awareness of specialized psychological services. Then the subjects were asked to carry out a certain gradation of existing services and distribute them using a ranking method, according to importance, in the opinion of the subjects. Then the respondents were asked to answer the question of whether they had resorted to specialized psychological help and support, and also to assess the importance of it among medical students. This study is of great interest to all those involved in the educational process with students, including those at medical universities.

Abstract:
International students' pursuit of education in the United States (US) is mutually beneficial to both international students and the economy of the United States. Students often experience culture shock or transitional stress upon arrival. Despite these challenges, research indicates that international students are not likely to seek professional counseling to manage or resolve their issues. In the event that they seek help they are known to prefer medical instead of psychological help. Authors in this chapter review the influence of stigma and acculturational variables on help seeking behaviors of international students. The authors also discuss implications for international students and institutions of higher education, and conclude with recommendations that may be beneficial to international students, student counseling services, and institutions of higher education in the United States.

Abstract:
Background: The literature indicates that medical students in Poland, much like their counterparts globally, face higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression compared to the general population. Because of stigma and confidentiality concerns, they tend to avoid seeking help, which delays timely and appropriate support. Moreover, the availability of mental health support (MHS) for medical students remains an ongoing issue. Methods and Objectives: The study focused on assessing the availability of Mental Health Services (MHS) at the top five universities in Poland offering MD programs, as per the 2023 Perspektywy University Ranking: Jagiellonian University Medical College (KR), Medical University of Warsaw (WA), Wroclaw Medical University (WR), Medical University of Gdansk (GD), and Medical University of Lodz (LD). Our analysis involved the examination of information pertaining to MHS on the official university websites. Furthermore, during the academic year 2022/2023, a concise, open-ended questionnaire regarding the availability of MHS was dispatched to the Dean's offices of the aforementioned universities. Results: All universities offer free MHS in Polish and English, and WR additionally in German. Most programs provide hybrid support. MHS consists of short-term interventions and is limited to five hours per student in LD, and three visits per student in WR. Other forms of support include well-being programs like coaching, psychoeducation, biofeedback training, stress management training, mindfulness sessions, and yoga. Two universities reported an increased demand for psychological support due to COVID-19. Conclusions: All major medical universities in Poland offer mental health support (MHS); however, the extent of their services varies. To optimize the impact of these programs, it is imperative to institute quality standards and ensure sustainable funding. Further investigation is necessary to assess the effectiveness of the provided MHS. Implementing comprehensive MHS in medical education institutions is crucial for the well-being of future healthcare professionals.

Abstract:
In today’s digital world, access to technology and digital literacy is essential for successful reintegration into society, especially for incarcerated individuals. Incarcerated women face significant challenges due to limited access to digital tools and training during their sentences. This digital divide hinders their ability to re-entry, affecting opportunities for employment, communication, and social reintegration. This study aims to assess the digital skills and needs of incarcerated women and design a training program to bridge the digital gap. The goal is to equip them with the necessary digital competencies to help their resocialization, employment possibilities, and overall reintegration. Additionally, the project aims to advocate for the integration of technology in Macedonian prisons. In September 2023, a survey was conducted in the Women’s Ward of KPD Idrizovo as part of the DiCapSIW project. The survey assessed the incarcerated women’ digital skills and their access to technology. Based on the findings, six digital skills training modules were developed, covering areas such as digital literacy, job readiness, and online communication. The survey revealed a significant lack of digital skills among female inmates. Most respondents lacked basic competencies in areas such as job searching and document creation. However, all expressed motivation to participate in digital skills training, recognizing its importance for resocialization and post-release employment.

Abstract:
Background: The problem of social and psychological adaptation of externally displaced Ukrainians is extremely urgent today, as millions of citizens were forced to leave Ukraine as a result of the full-scale invasion. Given the differences in language, culture, religion, and administrative structure of the host countries, the problem of adaptation has become extremely acute for many. Without proper support and resources to help them integrate into their new communities, internally displaced persons may deal with a variety of challenges, including isolation, discrimination, and mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. This can make it difficult for them to rebuild their lives and achieve a sense of security and stability. Purpose: To identify the conditions that influence the successful psychosocial adaptation of externally displaced Ukrainians. Methods: The theoretical method was aimed at studying scientific papers and articles on the topic of social and psychological adaptation. An empirical method was also used, which included the Methodology for Diagnosing Socio-Psychological Adaptation by K. Rogers and R. Diamond and a questionnaire of our own design aimed at studying the difficulties and problems faced by people in the new social environment. Results: In general, most of the respondents have average levels of indicators according to the Rogers and Diamond methodology for diagnosing social and psychological adaptation, but a low level of social adaptation, emotional comfort and striving to dominate was also found in some of the respondents. The analysis of our own questionnaire showed that the process of adaptation of externally displaced Ukrainians is influenced by such factors as language skills, access to medical services, government support, education and employment, and social and cultural environment. Conclusions: The results of the study revealed that although most of the respondents have average adaptation indicators, externally displaced Ukrainians experience a range of problems and need support and additional measures. Abstract:
Background: Mental Health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Mental health problems are seen among healthcare workers, particularly physicians & medical students, who are exposed to a high level of stress at their study & work. Despite the perception of medical students and doctors of the importance of mental health, they have low levels of help seeking for their own psychiatric problems. Fear of exposure to stigmatisation is a crucial contributing barrier to accessing mental health services. Objectives: This study aims to assess stigmatizing attitudes towards mental health and its prevalence among medical students and residents in the University of Jordan and Jordan University Hospital. Method: This is a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study, where an electronic questionnaire (Google-form) was distributed, and 801 responses were received back. Data then were analysed using the SPSS software. Mental Illness Clinicians' Attitudes (MICA) Scale is used. MICA Scale is a short, self-administered instrument developed to assess attitudes about psychiatry and people with mental illness. Results: The total number of students participated in our survey was 801 medical students. Most of them were females and the mean age was 21.67 ± 2.26. The mean MICA score of the participants was 45.23 ± 9.59. Males had significantly higher MICA scores compared to females (P-value=0.000). Also, students who take medications for mental disease, students who said they would seek professional help if they needed it, students who lived with someone with mental disease, and students who currently have a close friend with mental disorder had significantly lower MICA scores compared to their counterparts (P-value<0.050). Moreover, students who their household income was higher and students who their father educational level was higher had significantly higher MICA score than their counterparts. Conclusion: Higher MICA score indicates more stigmatization attitude for patients with mental disorder. Males had significantly higher MICA scores compared to females. Abstract:
Introduction: With numerous studies examining life in prison, identifying research gaps is necessary for mapping focus areas, refining unanswered questions, and avoiding redundant efforts. This process could optimise resources, fosters collaborative approaches, and ultimately lead to more robust and insightful research outcomes. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to identify and address research gaps and future directions within the field of prison studies, specifically focusing on prison climate. Methods: Comprehensive searches were conducted across two databases and a web search engine, with no time restrictions, targeting papers with 'prison climate' in their titles. Both quantitative and qualitative studies were collected. Their limitations and recommendations for future research were analysed using a convergent integrated framework, followed by thematic synthesis. Results: A review of 97 studies identified several critical areas. The studies included diverse samples, but research predominantly focused on Western countries and adult male populations. Various ethical, logistical, and institutional factors frequently influenced sample representativeness, data quality, and measurement reliability. In general, there is an urgent need for longitudinal studies examining prison climate and rehabilitation outcomes. Comparative cross-cultural studies and qualitative explorations of the experiences of both inmates and staff remain underrepresented. Additionally, limited research addresses the relationship between inmate personality profiles and their specific needs within prison programs. Similarly, limited attention was given to how the work environment impacts staff attitudes and behaviours, as well as how these, consequently, shape inmate perceptions of prison climate. The effectiveness of gender-sensitive rehabilitation programs and the role of interventions focused on family, housing, and health in reducing recidivism also require further exploration. Conclusion: Geographic diversity and representation of under-researched groups (e.g., elderly inmates, non-Western populations) remain limited. While quantitative methods dominated, qualitative approaches, context-specific validation, and longitudinal designs emerged as priorities for future research. Additionally, expanding research beyond Western prison populations and adapting measurement tools for diverse inmate and staff groups is recommended. Establishing evidence-based thresholds could help set policies that prevent institutions from falling below safety standards and ensure minimally acceptable conditions regarding overcrowding, violence levels, and staffing ratios. These thresholds can guide resource allocation and intervention design towards positive rehabilitation outcomes, such as increased program participation and improved re-entry support. Finally, engaging individuals with lived experience and other relevant stakeholders in research could further ensure the relevance and applicability of findings.

Abstract:
The development of digital technology is profoundly transforming the practice of medical education. Virtual simulation is becoming the cornerstone of clinical education and training. With the increasing budget and standardized teaching pressure of universities and related medical institutions, virtual reality is playing a more and more important role on medical simulation teaching. VR can provide cost-effective, repeatable, and standardized clinical training for learners and educators as needed. The future of VR lies in its continuous integration with the curriculum and the technological development that allows the sharing of simulated clinical experience. It can achieve large-scale medical education without time and space limitation, and change the way of future clinical education. Especially in the context of public health crises, virtual medical training systems can greatly alleviate the shortage of professionals in medical institutions, protect medical personnel, and obtain a large number of well-trained medical staff in the short term. As a powerful and highly potential medical education tool, Virtual reality has attracted high attention from top international medical colleges and institutions. This study analyzes the scenario innovation of virtual reality technology in medical education through a combination of theory and case studies, summarizes the possibilities, advantages, and barriers of technology use, and provides reference for the development of related virtual medical education systems. In terms of the possibility of scenario innovation, the following five points can be considered: firstly, virtual reality technology can showcase the functions of medical devices and drug action mechanisms in medical procurement and marketing; Secondly, for doctor-patient communication, education can be provided to medical patients and their families, informing and explaining the patient's condition, surgical operation plan, and the role of "trial operation"; Thirdly, for rehabilitation training, it can help patients receive dual psychological and physiological treatment and rehabilitation guidance; Fourthly, for medical teaching, nursing teaching and clinical training can be conducted; Fifth, for medical science popularization, health knowledge popularization, promotion of healthy lifestyles, emergency rescue training, and disaster response education can be carried out. The advantages of virtual reality technology in medical education innovation mainly include the following three aspects: firstly, for learners, virtual simulation systems equipped with virtual reality technology make learning clinical easier with immersive experience; Secondly, for educators, it can greatly release teachers' time and space; Thirdly, for universities and medical institutions, it is allowed to provide simulated teaching with fewer resources and lower costs. The disadvantages of virtual reality technology in medical education mainly include three aspects: firstly, virtual simulation systems equipped with virtual reality technology are not suitable for all medical education scenarios; Secondly, due to its own technological limitations, the implementation of some teaching activities still requires human support; Thirdly, the system itself which provides a simulated learning approach still cannot replace expert educators.

Abstract:
Objectives: Breast cancer is the cancer with the highest incidence in women in Brazil. The revelation of this diagnosis is considered a crucial moment, responsible for uncertainties and even affecting the doctor–patient relationship. Although the communication of bad news is one of the most frequent practices among physicians, difficulties are common. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the communication in the diagnosis of breast cancer and the repercussions on the treatment, using the parameters as suggested by the Centro Avançado de Diagnóstico de Câncer de Mama (CORA/ HC-UFG) in Goiânia-GO. Methodology: This qualitative and integrative study was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, SciELO, and MedLine with six selected articles. The keywords used were “communication,” “diagnosis,” “breast cancer,” “adherence to treatment,” and “doctor–patient relationship.” Based on the results, a comparison was made with the one carried out in the CORA/HC-UFG. Results: Through the analysis of the articles, it was observed that the no tification of the diagnosis of cancer is considered a critical moment and how professionals notify patients directly interferes in the relationship of the patients with the diagnosis itself. Thus, it is up to the professionals to provide psychological and informative support at the time of diagnosis in order to reduce pessimistic feelings and to avoid abandoning the medical–hospital follow-up. In addition, when analyzing the care provided at CORA, it was noted that the adoption of a more humanized and multiprofessional communication, with the help of the psychological team, it was noticed, in agreement with the studies, a better acceptance and treatment adherence. Conclusion: The notification of cancer should be done in the most empathetic way possible, using techniques of psychology and communication, so that the patient receives information about his health situation in a welcoming manner. Furthermore, although the diagnostic communication is a medical act, the presence of a psychologist to support the patient has shown benefits.

Abstract:
Introduction: The homeless population has a high prevalence of alcoholism and consumption of other drugs, which also means that they are at greater risk of developing all complications resulting from alcohol abuse. (MILER et al, 2021). The medical attention for homeless population is a device of the Unified Health System that claims social, health policies and the guarantee of fundamental rights (BRASIL, 2009). Methods: Evaluation of protocols and referral flows for the treatment of patients with ‘mental disorders and due to alcohol use’, of the medical attention for homeless population in the city of Petrópolis (Rio de Janeiro), between April / 2020 and April 2021, data from e-SUS, and literature review. Results: The city of Petrópolis (Rio de Janeiro) registered 259 people without home, 84.8% are men, all people are adults between 20-74 years old, 98% are born Brazilians, 92% reported alcohol consumption, and alcohol with other drugs 61% (cocaine, crack, marijuana, solvent, tobacco). There was 3 patients with diagnose of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome: 2 men and 1 woman (aged 60-65 years) in the period from April 2020 - April 2021 (BRAZIL, 2021 The medical attention for homeless population approach to alcoholism includes the CAGE and AUDIT tests, symptomatic treatment and brief psychological interventions. aimed at weaning, and the Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment of Alcohol Scale Revised scale to quantify the degree of abstinence. However, the majority of users do not want total cessation, generally they choose to reduce consumption (secondary prevention), and later recovery and reintegration into society, highlighting that self-help groups and social assistance have a prominent role (tertiary prevention) (MARSCHARLL; GREGANTI, 2002; LONGO, et al., 2013). Conclusion: Despite confounding / aggravating factors such as social determinants in health, and the difficulties of the health network, the medical attention for homeless population is fundamental in the secondary and tertiary prevention of neurological diseases due to chronic alcohol consumption; complex cases require complex interventions, that is, individualization, adaptation and flexibility.

Rudd, Ian. Leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Robotics to Improve Mental Health. Intellectual Archive, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.32370/iaj.2710.

Full text
Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the oldest fields of computer science used in building structures that look like human beings in terms of thinking, learning, solving problems, and decision making (Jovanovic et al., 2021). AI technologies and techniques have been in application in various aspects to aid in solving problems and performing tasks more reliably, efficiently, and effectively than what would happen without their use. These technologies have also been reshaping the health sector's field, particularly digital tools and medical robotics (Dantas & Nogaroli, 2021). The new reality has been feasible since there has been exponential growth in the patient health data collected globally. The different technological approaches are revolutionizing medical sciences into dataintensive sciences (Dantas & Nogaroli, 2021). Notably, with digitizing medical records supported the increasing cloud storage, the health sector created a vast and potentially immeasurable volume of biomedical data necessary for implementing robotics and AI. Despite the notable use of AI in healthcare sectors such as dermatology and radiology, its use in psychological healthcare has neem models. Considering the increased mortality and morbidity levels among patients with psychiatric illnesses and the debilitating shortage of psychological healthcare workers, there is a vital requirement for AI and robotics to help in identifying high-risk persons and providing measures that avert and treat mental disorders (Lee et al., 2021). This discussion is focused on understanding how AI and robotics could be employed in improving mental health in the human community. The continued success of this technology in other healthcare fields demonstrates that it could also be used in redefining mental sicknesses objectively, identifying them at a prodromal phase, personalizing the treatments, and empowering patients in their care programs.

Abstract:
Objective. The purpose was to review available evidence of risk factors associated with maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States during the prenatal and postpartum periods to inform a National Institutes of Health Pathways to Prevention Workshop: Identifying Risks and Interventions to Optimize Postpartum Health, held November 29–December 1, 2022. Data sources. We searched MEDLINE®, CINAHL®, and the Social Sciences Citation Index through November 2022. Review methods. We searched for observational studies examining exposures related to social and structural determinants of health and at least one health or healthcare-related outcome for pregnant and birthing people. We extracted basic study information and grouped studies by social and structural determinants of health domains and maternal outcomes. We prioritized studies according to study design and rigor of analytic approaches to address selection bias based on the ROBINS-E. We summarize all included studies and provide additional descriptions of direction of association between potential risk exposures and outcomes. Results. We identified 8,378 unique references, with 118 included studies reporting social and structural determinants of health associated with maternal health outcomes. Studies covered risk factors broadly, including identity and discrimination, socioeconomic, violence, trauma, psychological stress, structural/institutional, rural/urban, environment, comorbidities, hospital, and healthcare use factors. However, the risk factors we identified represent only a subset of potential social and structural determinants of interest. We found an unexpectedly large volume of research on violence and trauma relative to other potential exposures of interest for pregnant people. Outcome domains included maternal mortality, severe maternal morbidity, hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes, cardio/metabolic disorders, weathering (the physiological effect of premature aging caused by chronic stressful experiences), depression, other mental health or substance use disorders, and cost/healthcare use outcomes. Depression/other mental health outcomes represented a large proportion of medical outcomes captured. Risk of bias was high, and rarely did studies report the excess risk attributable to a specific exposure. Conclusions. Identifying risk factors pregnant and birthing people face is vitally important. Limited depth and quality of available research within each social and structural determinant of health impeded our ability to outline specific pathways, including risk factor interdependence. While more recently published literature showed a trend toward increased rigor, future research can emphasize techniques that estimate the causal impacts of risk factors. Improved reporting in studies, along with organized and curated catalogues of maternal health exposures and their presumed mechanisms, would make it easier to examine exposures in the future. In the longer term, the field could be advanced by datasets designed to more fully capture the data required to robustly examine racism and other social and structural determinants of health, in combination with their intersections and feedback loops with other biologic/medical risk factors.

Abstract:
A PCORI-funded study provides new information for primary care clinicians about the need to monitor long-term cardiovascular risks in transgender women receiving hormone therapy. Approximately 1.4 million transgender people live in the United States. Many transgender women pursue medical transition with hormone therapy including estrogen to align their bodies with their female gender identity. Evidence suggests that medical transition confers significant psychological benefits including reduced depression, anxiety, and suicidality and improved quality of life. However, the risks of using estrogen, including cardiovascular risks, are not well understood. Recent evidence on these risks can help inform decisions and improve care for transgender women who are currently using or formerly used estrogen.
