Abstract:
Aesop in the Ottoman Literature of the 19th century
The study based on the Karamanlidika version of Aesop’s fables printed by Evangelinos Misailidis in 1854 offers a review of the Ottoman perception of Aesop in the 19th century. The Turkish versions of the fables released in various alphabets (Cyrillic, Arabic), and the Vita of Aesop, are presented and explored. The study also discusses the Turkish manuscript written in Greek characters, located by Ernst Otto Blau in Mariupol, today in southern Ukraine. His discovery proves that Aesop appeared in the handwritten form at least as far back

This volume marks an important stage in plaNext. It publishes original works following an open call, as the special-issue inaugural volume was dedicated to selected contributions from the 8th AESOP-YA annual conference. With the growing interest in plaNext, we see a bright future as a leading open access journal in planning and other related fields. Thanks to the generous contribution of AESOP, all articles are openly available at AESOP’s digital platform, InPlanning, and authors do not pay any article processing fee. In this respect, we envision plaNext as an effort by the young academic comm

Spirodela polyrhixa Schleid has been used in folk medicine to treat inflammatory diseases. Since nitric oxide (NO) is one of the major inflammatory parameters, we studied the effect of aqueous extracts of Spirodela polyrhixa (AESP) on NO production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophages. AESP inhibited the secretion of NO in macrophages, without affecting cell viability. The protein level of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in peritoneal macrophages was also decreased by AESP. Transient transfection assay of reporter plasmid and gel shift assay indicated that

Greco-Roman literature played a significant role in formulating the early modern idea of the witch. Analyzing works produced mainly by Florentine, Bolognese, and Genoese artists between 1550 and 1650, this chapter argues that Italian artists reinforced the association of ancient witches with the new concept of witchcraft by subverting and obscuring the reality, methods, and intentions of the sorcery performed by Circe and Medea. First, artists refuted the reality of transformation by presenting Circe as an exemplar of contemporary medical theories concerning delusional witches. Second, artists

The Latvian writer and physician Miervaldis Birze (1921–2000) introduced the notion of “the literature of limited truth” in his prose and journalism. It was a literature shaped by the politics of the USSR, that was subject to censorship and contributed to the writer’s self-censorship. The literature of limited truth openly acknowledges its omission and concealment of facts. M. Birze established this meaning, which, in parallel with the language of Aesop, can be used to describe the literary environment of the Latvian SSR. The literature of limited truth is the consequence of a long-cultivated
