Abstract:
Neuroprosthetics is at the intersection of neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and physics. A biocompatible neuroprosthesis contains artificial neurons exhibiting biophysically plausible dynamics. Hybrid systems analysis could be used to prototype such artificial neurons. Biohybrid systems are composed of artificial and living neurons coupled via real-time computing and dynamic clamp. Model neurons must be thoroughly tested before coupled with a living cell. We use bifurcation theory to identify hazardous regimes of activity that may compromise biocompatibility and to identify control strate

Iron is an essential nutrient, involved in a wide range of biochemical activities. However, its flexible coordination chemistry and favorable redox potential may render this element potentially toxic. Thus, tight and accurate regulation of iron absorption in humans is critical to prevent systemic excess or deficiency. This complex task is accomplished by hepcidin, a liver-derived peptide hormone that binds to the iron transporter ferroportin and promotes its degradation. This results in a decrease of the iron efflux from duodenal enterocytes, macrophages and hepatocytes into the blood stream.

Abstract:
In today's health care environment tremendous efforts are being made by Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) to deliver appropriate patient care while controlling utilization of services and costs. One area of concern over the past two years has been the apparent over-utilization of spinal surgeries within a local Senior HMO. This HMO has no specific plan or physician guidelines for the management of low back pain. Utilization of spinal surgeries is measured in incidence of admissions per thousand members of the Senior HMO. Over the past two years the incidence of spinal surgeries per thous

Abstract:
Sulfatide is a galactolipid and a major lipid component of the myelin sheath. Its production is catalyzed by the enzyme cerebroside sulfotransferase (CST). To determine the functions of sulfatide, the gene encoding CST was genetically disrupted resulting in mice incapable of sulfatide synthesis. Using these mice, it has been shown in the central nervous system (CNS) that sulfatide is essential for normal myelin synthesis and stability even though the onset of myelination is not impaired. Additionally, proper initial clustering of paranodal proteins and cluster maintenance of nodal proteins is

Upplevelser inn

ADAM10 is a zinc-dependent metalloprotease. ADAM10 has emerged as a key regulator of cellular processes by cleaving and shedding extracellular domains of multiple transmembrane receptors and ligands. In this study, we examined the role of ADAM10 in the immune system. Here, we show that knocking out ADAM10 on the mature B2 cell causes a defect in the development of secondary lymphoid architecture that becomes more severe post-immunization. We also show that overexpression of ADAM10 leads to a defect in hematopoiesis, which eliminates B2 lymphocyte development. This defect additionally indu
