Abstract:
Ancient peoples did not distinguish between philosophy, religion, and science. Scientific truth did not exist apart from divine truth. Any new idea, finding, or theory was assimilated into a monolithic mythological structure. This is one of the causes of the underestimation of ancient science: it is always packaged in a myth - the method of preserving information in an oral culture. The mythological medium allowed the preservation and dissemination of hard-won, empirical, scientific knowledge through generations of preliterate peoples. The context for mythological memorization, or simply tradition, needed to be easily and naturally acquired. The ideal context was the anthropomorphic context, the ontogenic context. This is the Grand Allegory - the anthropomorphization of information. Biomyths are essentially biological texts allegorized in esoteric language.

Münch, Andreas. "Collagenous colitis : The influence of inflammation and bile acids on intestinal barrier function." Doctoral thesis, Linköpings universitet, Gastroenterologi och hepatologi, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-56291.

Full text
Abstract:
Background and aims: Collagenous colitis (CC) is a diarrheal disorder with an incidence rate of 5-6/100000 inhabitants, affecting mainly middle-aged women. The diagnosis is made by histology of the colonic mucosa. Classical findings are a thickened subepithelial collagenous layer and chronic inflammation in the lamina propria. In inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) the mucosal barrier function is important in pathogenesis. The main purpose of the thesis was therefore to describe the barrier function in CC. The cause of CC is uncertain but the condition seems to be associated with bile acid malabsorption. Increased faecal bile acids are known to induce diarrhea. In functional studies the influence of bile acids on mucosal permeability in biopsies of healthy human individuals and in patients with CC was investigated. Methods and patients: In the first paper a single patient with intractable CC was examined before surgery, with loop-ileostomy and after bowel reconstruction. For the other studies a total of 25 patients with CC were included (20 women, 5 men, mean age 66 years). There were three groups (14 patients in clinical remission without medical treatment, 11 with active disease, and 8 of these again after 6 weeks of budesonide treatment); 17 individuals with normal histology served as controls. Endoscopic biopsies from the sigmoid colon were mounted in modified Ussing chambers and assessed for short-circuit current (Isc), transepithelial resistance (TER), and transmucosal passage of chemically killed E. coli K12 after addition of chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) and deoxycholic acid (DCA). The biopsies were further investigated with confocal microscopy to assess bacterial transepithelial passage. Results: Para- and transcellular permeability was increased in active CC, but normalized with histological improvement due to faecal stream diversion. After bowel reconstruction, permeability to CrEDTA and HRP increased again. In CC, bacterial uptake in colonic biopsies was significantly higher in all groups than in controls. Despite significant alleviation of symptoms, budesonide did not normalize the increased bacterial passage. Histology was unchanged after 6 weeks of budesonide treatment. DCA augmented mucosal permeability to CrEDTA in a dose-dependent manner and even such a low dose as 100 μmol/l DCA increased bacterial uptake significantly. The combination of bile acids and E.coli K12 had additive effects on TER. 100 μmol/l CDCA and DCA increased bacterial uptake in biopsies of CC patients in remission 4-fold, but had no additive effect on biopsies from patients with active disease. Furthermore, patients in clinical remission on budesonide treatment showed no bile acidinduced effects on E.coli K12 passage. Conclusion: Collagenous colitis presents with increased para/transcellular permeability and bacterial uptake, irrespective of disease activity or budesonide treatment, signifying an underlying mucosal barrier defect. Faecal stream diversion can normalize the barrier dysfunction, but budesonide does not, despite its beneficial clinical effects which alleviate diarrhea or bowel symptoms. Bile acids in physiological concentrations have the potential to augment bacterial uptake, especially in mucosa from CC patients in remission. Budesonide treatment appears to counteract the bile acid induced mucosal impairment. These detrimental effects of bile acids on mucosal barrier function might facilitate initiation and perpetuation of mucosal inflammation in CC.

Lemos, Nikolaos P. "Analysis of bile and nail as alternative biological specimens in forensic toxicology." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1999. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4116/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the use of bile and nail as alternative biological specimens in forensic toxicology. In chapter 1, a brief overview of the mechanisms of substance passage into and out of membranes and fluids and matrices was presented followed by a review of the use of alternative biological specimens for analytical purposes. The experimental part of this thesis begins in chapter 2 where a simple and rapid method for the detection and quantification of dextropropoxyphene in bile and its major metabolite, norpropoxyphene, is presented. Following this, nail is examined as an alternative biological specimen in cases of medico-legal interest. Firstly, two major cannabinoids, 9-tetrahydrocannabinol and 11-nor-9-tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid were identified in the nail (chapter 3) by means of RIA and GC-MS. Cannabinoids were found to be present in all six cases that were analysed for cannabinoids by RIA and their concentration ranged from 0.23 ng/mg to 2.80 ng/mg (average: 1.03 ng/mg). Using GC-MS, 9-tetrahydrocannabinol was detected in 11 out of the 14 nail clipping hydrolysates after basic extraction with concentrations ranging from 0.13 ng/mg to 6.97 ng/mg (average: 1.44 ng/mg). 11-nor-9-tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid was not detected in any of these nail clipping hydrolysates but was detected in two of the three fingernail clipping hydrolysates extracted under acidic pH with concentrations ranging from 9.82 ng/mg to 29.7 ng/mg (average: 19.8 ng/mg). In chapter 4, the detection and quantification of diazepam, the most commonly encountered benzodiazepine, were described. Using ECD-GC, diazepam was detected in hydrolysates of all 6 sets of nail clippings in concentrations ranging from 4.37 to 87.8 ng/mg (average: 25.7 ng/mg). In chapter 5, an analytical protocol for the detection and quantification of morphine in nail clippings of known heroin abusers was presented. Finally, a protocol for the detection and quantification of methadone in nail clippings of patients attending a methadone maintenance program was presented.

Sagar, Nidhi. "Describing the gut microbiome and metabolomic changes in bile acid diarrhoea (BAD)." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2017. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/101543/.

Full text
Abstract:
The diagnosis of BAD is often missed or misdiagnosed for IBS-D as these conditions present similarly with chronic diarrhoea. The principal hindrance to diagnosis of BAD is limited access to the diagnostic SeHCAT scan. Mechanisms of aetiology underlying BAD have not been fully elucidated and to date, an alternative biomarker for BAD that is more accessible and patient preferable, has yet to make its way into clinical practice. One of the greatest scientific challenges this decade has been understanding the relationship between the gut microbiome, its functionality and role in human health. BAs are metabolised by the gut microbiota, therefore their role as signalling molecules in regulating intestinal homeostasis is influenced primarily by the gut commensals. This thesis is the first study to profile the gut microbiome in BAD and investigate the mechanisms of how bacterial metabolic products may influence the development of disease. This was achieved by conducting 16S ribosomal RNA gene analysis, the most important target of study in bacterial ecology. Bacterial metabolites (SCFAs and VOCs) and BAs were measured using gas and liquid chromatography, mass and ion mobility spectrometry. The results indicate intestinal dysbiosis with reduced bacterial diversity in patients with BAD. A statistically significantly greater total concentration of SCFAs with increases in the concentrations of acetate and propionate were observed in BAD compared to IBS-D. A statistically significant increase in the concentrations of faecal primary BAs and serum CDCA was observed in BAD compared to IBS-D. Separation of VOC profiles was evident between the BAD, IBS-D and HC groups but greatest discrimination was between the IBS-D and HC cohorts. In conclusion, intestinal dysbiosis with altered fermentation and resultant BA dysmetabolism were observed. The metabolic output of the microbiota rather than abundance of specific bacterial taxa appears to be more important in the aetiology of BAD.

Abstract:
Two enzymes, a 7α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (7α-HSDH) and an NADH-dependent flavin oxidoreductase (NADH:FOR), have been purified to apparent electrophoretic homogeneity from the intestinal anaerobe Eubacterium sp. VPI 12708. Using a protocol consisting of four chromatographic separations, the 7α-HSDH was purified by a factor of over 1200-fold with more than a 30% final recovery. Subunit molecular mass was estimated to be 32 Kdal by SDS-PAGE, while native molecular mass estimates from gel filtration were 124 Kdal. The purified 7α-HSDH was able to utilize a variety of bile acids containing an unhindered 7α-hydroxy moiety as substrates, existing either as free acids or glycine or taurine conjugates. The presence of an oxo moiety at position 3 or 12 profoundly altered the kinetic values for this enzyme. The structural gene for the 7α-HSDH was cloned on a 3.8 Kb Kpnl-Pstl fragment and was sequenced using the dideoxy chain termination method. An open reading frame of 798 bp encoding a 266 amino acid protein was detected. The N terminal amino acid sequence of the purified protein was identical to the first 22 amino acids predicted from the open reading frame. Putative transcriptional promotor and terminator regions along with a tentative ribosome binding site were also located. Northern blot analysis indicated that this protein was expressed constitutively on an approximately 1 Kb monocistronic message. During sequence analysis, the 7α-HSDH was found to be highly homologous to several members of the short-chain, non-zinc alcohol/polyol dehydrogenase superfamily. Using a five step protocol, the NADH:FOR was also purified to homogeneity. A final purification of greater than 5OO-fold with an 11 % recovery was obtained. The purified protein had a subunit molecular mass of 72 Kdal and a native mass of 210 Kdal, suggesting that it exists either as a dimer or a trimer. Northern blot, Western blot, and activity stains of native gels all indicated that the NADH:FOR is a cholate-inducible protein. N-terminal amino acid sequence determination revealed a significant homology to enoate reductase from Clostridium kluyveri. Since the enoate reductase is involved in the reduction of a variety of α/β unsaturated carboxylates, this homology may be indicative of the physiological function of the NADH:FOR in Eu. sp VPI 12708.

Full text
Abstract:
Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a rare cancer with a poor prognosis. Much of medical research has focused on investigating cancers with a higher incidence and little focus has been devoted to this disease. The aim of this thesis was to perform a protein analysis of CCA and cholangiocyte cell lines. Differences between immortalised cancer and normal cells were sought in order to identify potential therapeutic targets and/or diagnostic tools. A variety of CCA cell lines were used, reflecting both intra and extrahepatic disease. The different subtypes of CCA through the developed and developing world are also represented so differences were also sought between them. Proteomic analysis was performed using DIGE with subsequent spot selection. Identified spots were extracted and processed using mass spectrometry. In addition, available chemotherapy agents were tested in vitro against the same cell lines to check for their action and how this could be enhanced. A benzodiazepine receptor antagonist (PK11195) was used to demonstrate apoptosis promotion in the presence of established cytotoxic agents (gemcitabine, etoposide, 5 fluorouracil and cisplatin). Cytotoxic assays were carried out using the SRB (Sulphorhodamine B) assay. Cell lines were tested for benzodiazepine receptor status using qRTPCR and response was correlated.

Guariento, Luca. "From monochord to weather-glass : musica speculativa and its development in Robert Fludd's philosophy." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/6246/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis is an enquiry into the nature and consistency of the idea of music as a metaphor throughout the works of the English philosopher and physician Robert Fludd (1573/4-1637). Fludd was very fond of a view of the world in which man is made of the same elements and the same proportions of the cosmos. Though this idea was slowly losing credit amongst the intellectuals of the time, Fluddean thought made some impact in the British Isles, and even more so on the continent: Johannes Kepler, for instance, wrote extensively about Fludd’s use of numerical symbolism, and stressed the differences between his own idea of harmony of the spheres and Fludd’s. After Fludd’s death, his ideas were still taken seriously amongst certain intellectual circles, e.g. in England (John Webster) and Poland (John Amos Comenius), and Fluddean thought influenced German musico-theoretical writers such as Athanasius Kircher, Andreas Werckmeister, and Johann Walther. But the subsequent centuries witnessed a general obliviousness towards Fludd. His figure began to re- emerge only in the second half of the 20th century in an increasing number of essays, papers, articles and a few books dedicated to him. What is still lacking, though, is a reassessment relying upon a more organic approach, which takes into account the entirety of Fludd’s publications and the wide range of topics covered in them. My work attempts to address this issue. The musical metaphor is one of the strongest leitmotifs in Fluddean publications, thanks to its being fit for representing man, the cosmos, and their interrelationship. Indeed the monochord, which well before Fludd was the preeminent practical and philosophical demonstration of the Pythagorean ‘divine’ proportions, rules the pages of Fludd’s earlier volumes. In later volumes, though, a new instrument takes its place: the more up-to-date weather-glass, surprisingly also linked to musical proportions. I argue that the new scientific instrument retains some of the monochord’s traits, thus representing an original re-arrangement of ‘ancient’ music; in fact, Fludd even applies it to the human pulse – an under-studied topic that I survey in detail. Following the whole Fluddean opera omnia is a task that gives one a glimpse of Fludd’s reactions to the deep changes that the intellectual and scientific world was undergoing from a perspective that has been, so far, largely neglected. This opens up to new fascinating outlooks on music, medicine and science at the beginning of the seventeenth century.

Abstract:
The collective microbial genomes within our gut(microbiome) represent a powerful metabolic force, leading many authors to call our GI flora an "organ within an organ", and the metagenomic sequencing of our microbiome, "the second human genome project". Bile acids, endogenously produced by the host liver, represent both a strong selective pressure for potential colonizers, aswell as substrates for microbial metabolism. Indeed, microbes have evolved enzymes to deconjugate bile salts, epimerize bile acid hydroxyl groups, and 7alpha-dehydroxylateprimary bile acids. The products of microbial 7alpha-dehydroxylation, secondary bile acids, are suggested by numerous lines of evidence to be involved in promoting colon carcinogenesis. 7alpha-dehydroxylating activity is a multi-step pathway, genes of which have only been identified in a small number of organisms within the genusClostridium. The biochemistry of this pathway has been largely worked out. The third step in the pathway is introduction of a delta-4-double bond; however, the gene product(s) responsible have not been identified. The baiCD and baiH genes were cloned, expressed and shown to have NAD-dependent 3-oxo-delta-4-steroid oxidoreductase activity showing stereospecificity for 7alpha-hydroxy and 7beta-hydroxy bile acid, respectively. In addition, bai genes were isolated from C.hylemonae TN271 by bidirectional genome-walking by PCR. This represents the first report of bai genes from a "low activity" 7alpha-dehydroxylating bacterium. The gene organization and sequence of the baiBCDEFGHI operon was highly conserved between C. hylemonae TN271 and the "high activity" 7alpha-dehydroxylating bacterium C. scindens VPI12708. The baiA gene was located by PCR using degenerate oligonucleotides. Bi-directional genome-walking revealed what appears to be several novel genes involved in bile acid metabolism which were also located in C. scindens VPI 12708. Expression of a 62 kDa flavoprotein and reactionwith [24-14C] 3-oxo-DCA and NADP resulted in a product of greater hydrophilicity than deoxycholic acid. The identity of this product was not determined. A second gene appears to share a common evolutionary origin with the baiF gene. A hypothesis is offered regarding the function of these homologues as Type III CoA transferasesrecognizing 5alpha-bile acids, or 5beta-bile acids (allo-bile acids). A third gene encodes a putative short chain reductase, similar in size and predicted function to the baiA gene, which may be involved in the final reductive step in the pathway. These novel genes also contained a conserved upstream regulatory region with the baioxidative genes. Finally, two genes were identified which may serve as potential drug targets to inhibit bile acid 7alpha-dehydroxylation. The first is an ABC transporter which may be co-transcribed with the other novel bile acid metabolizing genes, and what appears to be a bile acid sensor/regulator similar to the Tryptophan-rich sensory protein (TspO)/mitochondrial peripheral benzodiazepinereceptor (MBR) family of proteins.

Page, Benedict J. (Benedict John). "A histological and morphometric assessment of endocrine and ductular proliferation in the adult rat pancreas using an occlusive pancreatic duct ligation model." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/51573.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is synonymous with "B-cell failure". Ligation of the pancreatic duct distally to its confluence into the bile duct has been shown to induce endocrine tissue regeneration from a number of probable sources. The cells responsible for regeneration are supposed to possess either dormant pluripotent stem cell ability and/or the plasticity to undergo metaplasia to form new and surplus endocrine tissue able to replace pathologically and/or experimentally compromised pancreas. The sequence of events (cell lineage) during this process of neogenesis, has been the source of controversy for quite some time as various studies suggest that the cell lineage differs from in vivo and in vitro studies, according to experimental model and species of laboratory animal. The object of this study was to utilise an established experimental laboratory animal model to study islet morphological changes, neogenesis and or both in vivo. Further aims of the study were to determine the extent, sequence and magnitude of pancreatic duct ligation (PDL) induced endocrine neogenesis/morphogenesis in a laboratory rat model using occlusive pancreatic duct ligation. PDL's were performed on six groups of 25 normal adult Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (300g+) according to the method of Hultquist and Jonsson (1965). Experimental animals were sacrificed at 12 hr intervals from day one post-PDL to day 10 and every 24 hrs thereafter to day 14 as described by Wang, Klëppel, Bouwens (1995). Animals received BrdU (a thymidine marker and cell proliferation indicator) 50mglkg intraperitoneally as described by Wang et al. (1995), one hour prior to removal of the pancreas after which it was fixed in Bouin's solution and histologically processed. Seven consecutive 3-6 urn thick serial sections were sequentially stained with H & E, insulin (I), glucagon (G), somatostatin (ST), pancreatic polypeptide (PP), neuropeptide tyrosine (NPY) and peptide tyrosine tyrosine (PYY). Immunolabeling was done according to the method of Guesdon, Temynck , Avrameas (1979). Double immunolabeling for BrdU and each pancreatic peptide was performed on the sections on days 3,5, 7, 9 and 11 as described by Wang et al (1994). Cellular transformation between one and 3Yz days was characterised by simultaneous total deletion and/or transdifferentiation of the acinar compartment and the appearance of immunoreactive cells for I (11.53 ±1.5%), G (1.85 ±0.8%), pp (1.50 ±0.09%), and ST (1.96 ±0.24%). Changes in the endocrine composition in existing islets, occurred along a pathway that saw PP- and ST-cells invading the islet core, islet mantle glucagon deletion and random appearance of all endocrine cell types within the inter-islet interstitium on day 3Yz. Days 4 to 6Yz saw further endocrine expansion while days 7 to 14 were distinguished by islet reconstitution and consolidation. NPY immunoreactivity appeared on day 4Y2 and persisted intermittently throughout while PVV first appeared on day 4 and disappeared after day 7Yz. The results suggest that PDL firstly induced the development of endocrine tissue distributed haphazardly throughout the space previously occupied by acinar parenchyma. Secondly, the appearance of insulin is preceded by the appearance of PP, glucagon and somatostatin by 24-hours. A still to be determined proportion of the ligation induced endocrine formation appeared to be associated with existing islets, resulting in a number of very large islets, some of which might have secretory access through the glomerularlike capillary network known to occupy the islet core. The remainder appeared to form separate "new" islets, which have a dubious access to the blood stream. In conclusion, if it is true that the pancreas can regenerate some of its endocrine tissue then it has potential clinical implication for the stabilising of diabetes mellitus. Ligated exocrine pancreatic tissue, devoid of its acinar component, has been shown to contain notable quantities of insulin positive cells. This presents intriguing possibilities as an alternative for donor tissue, usually obtained from rat foetuses, during foetal rat pancreas transplantation studies. Pancreas tissue harvested from duct ligated rats could replace the foetal tissue currently used in the treatment of experimental diabetes mellitus in laboratory animals in this laboratory.
Webster, Tiffany. "When the Bible meets the black stuff : a contextual Bible study experiment." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/16501/.

Full text
Abstract:
The original contribution to knowledge that this Biblical Studies research project offers is the experimental analysis of the claim that the Bible reading methodology Contextual Bible Study (CBS) should be grounded in ethnography, not only in practice, but also in writing. This project not only critically evaluates this argument, but it also demonstrates the efficacy of its claims by putting the argument presented into practice. This was done by implementing the suggested methodological refinements of CBS via the design and facilitation of a CBS programme that was grounded in ethnography. This took the form of ethnographically researching coalmining culture in South Derbyshire and conducting a CBS programme with a group of contemporary South Derbyshire coal miners. The findings of this project are significant for the discipline of Biblical Studies as thus far CBS has been used in a manner that fails to recognise the need for ethnographic contextualisation – a need which is twofold. First, it has yet to be widely acknowledged that the processes, methods, and goals of CBS are products of the context that gave birth to it (South Africa) and that in order for CBS to be used appropriately and effectively, it should be contextualised in light of its origins. Secondly, ethnographic contextualisation is also needed to ensure the following: that the researcher using CBS understands as fully as possible the context in which they intend to use CBS; that the CBS programme being developed resonates deeply with those participating in it; and that the final audience of any readings produced via CBS are equally knowledgeable about the context of those participating in the process. This thesis therefore examines critically both ethnography and CBS, and through the employment of reflexivity, incorporates ethnography into CBS not only as its formal prerequisite stage, but in a manner whereby its results are then used to shape and inform the entirety of the CBS research.

Thesis, Montpellier 3, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011MON30075/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The notion of « gall », expressed by the noun χολή, is one of the most important as well as the most celebrated concepts of the hippocratic medicine, inseparable for the modern mind from the humoral theory. At first sight then, the idea of « gall » seems fairly obvious. However, reading hippocratic treatises in detail, one realizes that the notion of cholè turns out to be far more complex and intricate than expected. Our analysis of the most relevant hippocratic texts shows indeed that the concept of cholè varies according to the texts involved, as every author tends to develop his own concept of cholè. We tried to find out whether the complex nature of the medical concept known as cholè could be elucidated by a survey of its origins, and a survey of the origins of the humoral system as a whole. Our search for the origins of cholè has led us to the Homeric concept of chólos and to the Aristophanic concept of cholè. The prerequisites of both notions conspicuously differ from the medical concept of cholè, because they unite the substance with a state of mind. This discrepancy between medical and non-medical concepts was of utmost importance for us, since it helped to understand how hippocratic authors developed their ideas and their discourse. The main asset of our work consists, therefore, in an in-depth analysis of the ways in which hippocratic authors take over some non-medical ideas to frame concepts of their own : what are the components they cut out, add or modify. Our goal is to show how ancient medical thought proceeds, in its endeavour to emancipate itself from the tradition as well as from the other contemporary “sciences”, as philosophy

Appiah, S. S. "Evaluation of herbs as potential alternatives for bear bile and rhino horn used in traditional Chinese medicines : chemical and biological analysis." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2006. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/7897/.

Full text
Abstract:
There is currently an unsustainable rate of exploitation of certain species of plants and animals for use in traditional medicines. Bear bile and rhino horn are derived from endangered species and are traditionally combined with medicinal herbs as anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory agents. This study was designed to assess herbs for use as possible alternatives for these two products. Herbs were selected based on their traditional use as antiinflammatory and anti-bacterial agents. Chemical methods were used to confirm the plant species of the herbs and to measure concentrations of metals and pesticide residues as a means for assessing their quality. Antibacterial activities were determined using a direct bioautography technique. Anti-inflammatory activities of the herb extracts and isolated compounds were ascertained using an in vitro nuclear factor kappaB (NF-KB) activity, as assessed by IL-6 luciferase gene reporter assay. A novel assay was developed to estimate drug-herb interactions by measuring the effects of selected herbs and drugs on the production of eicosatrienoic acids from hepatic cytochrome P450 (CYP450) metabolism of arachidonic acid. In addition, CYP3A4 enzyme assays were conducted. The pesticide residue and heavy metal concentrations of the tested herbs was found not to exceed the existing legally permitted concentrations in foodstuffs, but the rhino horn sample contained elevated levels of Cd, Pb, Hg and Zn. Rhino horn was not found to be an effective anti-bacterial or anti-inflammatory agent In the assays used in this study. Seventeen herbs demonstrated anti-bacterial activity. Also, nine herbs demonstrated inhibitory NF-KB activity. Preliminary results indicate that co-administration of Scutel/aria baicalensis, Salvia miltiorrhiza, Rehmann/a glutinosa or Coptidis Rhizoma with drugs metabolised by CYP3A4, could lead to possible drug-herb interactions. Based on the Information obtained in these studies nine herbs are proposed as alternatives to rhino horn; eight herbs and two Kampo medicines are proposed as alternatives to bear bile.

Abstract:
This thesis presents evidence which supports Bertolt Brecht's oft-quoted statement that the Bible was the book which exerted the greatest influence upon his writings. While Brecht's early works, Die Bibel (1913), and Die Dreigroschenoper (1928), serve as the main examples, there are also references to biblical allusions from a number of his other writings and some of his poetry. There is general information on Brecht's religious background and en his extensive biblical knowledge which enabled him to use the Bible as one of his principal sources. Brecht's manner of usage and adaptation of religious and biblical material to suit his purposes is noted. As well, a consideration of the views and findings of a number of critics and writers with an interest in Brecht both as an individual and as a writer and poet, provides a degree of clarification of Brecht's approach to the Bible. Included too is sane detail which could posit the Bible as a possible catalyst in Brecht's examination of Marxism as a viable alternative to religion in meeting the needs and aspirations of mankind and of society.

Abstract:
With The Tragics, Aubigné demolishes the accusations of sedition and heresy conveyed on the account of the Huguenots by Ronsard. Arises between this work and the Discourses of political and religious cleavages where the poetic creation is, on behalf of the camp of each poet, the means to favor some provisions on the allocutaries. The question of reception thus occupies a central place in these two antagonistic works. It poses the problem of enlistment. This is a set of rhetorical resources whose challenge is to convince the adversary of his mistakes, to strengthen the partisans and to conquer public opinion. What are these resources that allow Ronsard and Aubigné to put their speakers in specific roles for their respective parties ?In our thesis, we are interested in the following questions : under what ethical traits do Ronsard and Aubigné speak each to subordinate his allocutaries to his convictions ? Who are these allocutaries ? With what discursive processes do the two poets act on the thoughts and behaviors of these recipients? Towards the theses of what poet is likely to lean readers ?With these questions, we have observed the roles of the enunciator's representation and his figures in the enlistment discourse, the categories of allocutaries and the oratorical styles set in motion to produce persuasion, firmness and mobilization

Abstract:
This study attempted to determine the types, extent, and quality of student personnel services in colleges and universities accredited by the Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges (AABC). The Basic Services Questionnaire (BSQ) was adapted for use among Bible colleges and universities and mailed to chief student affairs officers representing 69 Bible colleges in the United States accredited by the AABC. Of the 71 surveys mailed (two institutions employed both a Dean of Men and Dean of Women), 46 were returned for a response rate of 65 percent. Chi-square tests of goodness-of-fit were performed on the data in order to categorize the types, extent, and quality of student services provided by the institutions. The Mueller-Schuessler Index of Qualitative Variation was used to determine the homogeneity, or heterogeneity, of the chief student affairs officers when grouped according to specific variables (gender, ethnic origin, major for highest degree earned, and highest degree earned). Frequency counts and percentage distributions were used on demographic data to present a profile of chief student services administrators at AABC schools. The results of the study point to four conclusions. First, the types of student personnel services provided by American Bible colleges and universities accredited by the AABC closely match those offered by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) as essential to student services divisions within colleges or universities. Second, the extent of the student personnel services provided by American Bible colleges and universities accredited by the AABC was average to broad. Student services such as student development and financial aid were rated as broad to very broad. Third, quality of student personnel services at AABC institutions was fair to good. Financial aid services and student activities were rated as very good. Fourth, the chief student affairs officers at American Bible colleges and universities accredited by the AABC were homogeneous in regard to gender, ethnicity, and education.

Mellerin, Laurence. "De saint Bernard à la Bible, de la Bible à saint Bernard : un itinéraire de recherche." Thesis, Avignon, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018AVIG1184.

Full text
Abstract:
First of all, studies carried out within the framework of the BIBLINDEX project, an online index of scriptural quotations in the Early Christian Literature, are gathered. They aim at renewing the historiography on the reception of the Scriptures by statistical analysis. The methodological aspects – identification, expression, delimitation, characterization, queries and visualization – are discussed, then the defined method is applied to several corpora of the first centuries: the works of Irenaeus, Jerome; the book of Qohelet as read by the Fathers. The corpus written by the "last" of them, Bernard of Clairvaux, is the subject of the two following parts: archetypal indeed, due to the richness and the complexity of its implementations of the biblical material, this corpus lends itself particularly well an in-depth application of the investigation methods developed for BIBLINDEX, supplemented by textometric approaches. Some theological, literary and historical inquiries of the Cistercian’s work are first presented, which come along with the publication of his complete works in the collection Sources Chrétiennes and illustrate several types of biblical practices, such as constituting a controversial arsenal in epistolary conflicts; structuring a logical, both philosophical and theological, argumentation; establishing a spiritual geography using interpretations of Hebrew names. Finally, the sketch of a synthetic study of Bernard’s Bible is given, which would be based on the methods previously defined to improve our knowledge of the saint’s relationship to tradition and the role of scriptural assimilation in his writing strategies
