Abstract:
This thesis is about the content and concerns of each of four disciplines pertaining to the field of bioethics: medicine, philosophy, religion and law. Emphasis is put on the human values each reflects in patients' lives. A last chapter is dedicated to patients' narrative in order to bring a practical perspective to the discussions of the previous chapters. The four essential human values interconnecting among the four disciplines are: the patients' need for authority, the need for protection, the existential questioning about the meaning of life, and the fear of death.

One of the most persistent issues in the sociology of law concerns the limitations of legal regulation. This thesis tackles this question in the case of the legal regulation of medicine, and investigates what the law attempts to achieve in this context and what the conditions of its success might be. This inevitably calls into question the precise identification and the nature of both the field and the instruments of regulation. First, I consider the doctrinal categories of medical law and then the legal norms that constitute the discipline. As far as the initial question is concerned both the

Over the past decades, trust in medicine has steadily declined. The purpose of this thesis is to present a definition of 'trust', which helps us (a) understand what trust means in medicine, (b) analyse whether and if so why we have reason to be concerned, and (c) explain why it has declined. In the absence of a coherent and comprehensive definition of 'trust', I propose a 'pattern-based definition' derived from a conceptual analysis of trust. On this account trust is a justified expectation of the truster regarding the trustworthiness (i.e. competence and commitment) of the trustee. It presupp
