Abstract:
In this thesis, some episodes of wild madness in Middle English romance are analysed. Some knights, such as Lancelot, Tristan, Ywain and Partonope, experience this insanity generally as a consequence of a dramatic event in their love life. This wild madness presents precise characteristics: the mad knights tend to prefer wild and secluded environments – like the forest – they give up their clothes, alter their diet and are extremely aggressive. It has been suggested that these episodes might be influenced by the Biblical precedent of Nebuchadnezzar. It has also been noted that these madmen sha

Abstract Many historians would like to discover a time of relative freedom, security and independence for women of the past. The Germanic era, from 400-1000 AD, was a time of stability, and security due to limitations the law placed upon the mundwald and the legal ability of women to possess property. The system of compensations that the Germans initiated in an effort to stop the blood feuds between Germanic families, served as a deterrent to men that might physically or sexually abuse women. In the tumultuous political environment of late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century Britain, animal literature saw rapid development and innovation. Beast fable and epic, which already had a long tradition in Latin and French, gained new vigor and popularity in English and Scots renditions. Firstly, it argues that the huge variety of different law courts operating in late-medieval England created a situation of ‘legal pluralism’, meaning that there were far more opportunities to become involved

The Middle English lyric, “Sir John Doth Play,” narrated in the female voice clearly depicts rape by a male authority figure and the narrator’s distress over her unplanned pregnancy, yet has been repeatedly interpreted and introduced by critics as a love song portraying the interaction of a seductive village priest and a gullible maiden. As such, the lyric provides a unique perspective on the patriarchal nature of the twentieth century and the value of critically re-examining literature rather than canonizing accepted interpretations of literary work.

La manifestación espontánea de sus lecturas bíblicas en su correspondencia pone en evidencia dicho modelo ya que la hermenéutica textual corresponde al modelo de lectura que hacemos desde un punto de partida histórico y vivencial.
