Therefore, designing and management of SME in context of technology dissemination needs to understand business dimension as enterprise description, product/service, market, enterprise location, competition, management, personnel, budget, research and development. Beside general technology, both SME in general and specific are closely related to: (1) Technology choice covering technology complexities, capital intensity, and human resource (HR) quality; (2) Technology learning strategy based on learned technology position combination, both process and products with faced competition, through existing learned technology, technology integration, technology development and basic research; (3) Enterprise unit covering enterprise scale, HR, organization,<br />location, product type, enterprise unit, experiences, competition level and business network; (4) Performance indication of business unit and business man, and technology diffusion institutions; (5) Linkages of business with characteristics of authority, functional, normative and diffusion. PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to use empirical data to examine the impacts of integrating sustainability elements on the performance of supply chains of manufacturing small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs).Design/methodology/approachThe conceptual framework was based on the systems theory and the triple bottom line concept. Purposive sampling approach was used to collect data from a cross-section of manufacturing SMEs. Partial least square (PLS) structural equation modeling (SEM) approach was used to explore the relationships among the constructs.FindingsThe results indicate strong statistically significant positive relationships between each of the three sustainability elements and integration constructs. Sustainability integration is a mediating variable that explains a significant variance in performance of a supply chain. Supply chain performance is determined by the degree of integration of the three sustainability elements.Research limitations/implicationsThe research focused on SMEs in the manufacturing industry in a less developed economy. An extension of the findings to the service industry and larger manufacturing firms and different operating environments may be limited.Practical implicationsSustainability integration enhances supply chain performance and can be a competitive tool for manufacturing SMEs. The research emphasizes the value of sustainability integration into supply chains of manufacturing SMEs in less developed countries.Originality/valueThis is an original research that examined the impacts of sustainability integration on performance of supply chains of manufacturing SMEs in a developing economy. This research used empirical data to establish that integration of the three sustainability elements collectively acts as a critical mediating variable that determines the performance of a supply chain. The research also demonstrates the use of PLS-SEM to analyze supply chain attributes that cannot be directly measured.

ABSTRACTObjectives: To assess the perception of health-care personnel regarding the concept of integration in nursing, to assess the attitude of health-carepersonnel toward the concept of integration in nursing, and to determine the association of perception and attitude toward the concept of integrationin nursing with selected socio-demographic variables.Methods: Research approach adopted was descriptive survey approach. Population were 159 health-care personnel’s working at various hospitalsand institutions in Maharashtra. Purposive sampling technique was used. Data were collected using structured rating scale, which consisted of3 sections. Section 1 comprising demographic data, Sections 2 and 3 consisted 10 questions to assess the perception and attitude of health-carepersonnel. Tool was developed pretesting and reliability of the rating scale was done.Results: Findings of the study showed that majority 118 (74.21%) of respondents had low perception, 41 (25.78%) had medium perception, andnone of respondents had high perception regarding the concept of integration. Classification of respondents based on the levels of attitude, the79 (49.68%) had unfavorable attitude, 75 (47.16%) had moderately favorable attitude, and 5 (3.14%) had favorable attitude.Conclusions: As the result shows that there is medium to low level of perception between the health-care personnel regarding the concept ofintegration and the attitude is also unfavorable, there is need to find out the barriers of integration in nursing profession.Keywords: Perception, Attitude, Integration, Health-care personnel.

Implementing Total Quality Management in medium-scale enterprises is a process of initiating excellent quality practices enabling them to differentiate from competitors' practices. Like in many other countries, the medium enterprises in India are also taking various steps to delight their customers, in which, Total Quality Management (TQM) is one. The primary objective of this study is to pinpoint the problems that may hinder the process of smooth adoption of TQM in a medium-scale enterprise. Simultaneously, the study also highlights the ways through which prospects of adopting TQM in these enterprises can be enhanced. Significantly, the study resulted in highlighting the factors by which familiarity among management, staff, and employees about quality practices can be enhanced. The study also highlights the factors of TQM integration and measures of quality improvement, which can be helpful in enhancing the prospects of adopting TQM in these enterprises. However, the univariate analysis helped to conclude that TQM can be implemented in any type of medium enterprise irrespective of the type, sector, and functional orientation. However, because of their nature of operation, medium enterprises in public and private sectors require different type of measures for integrating TQM into their systems.

Abstract:
A finite element equation is established based on generalized elasticity theory by applying a virtual work principle. Then, a penalty function term is added to the virtual work equation by imposing rotation and displacement as independent variables. An 8-node element with full integration, an 8-node element with reduced integration, and a 20-node element with full integration are constructed using difference integration schemes and shape functions. The influences of structural degrees of freedom and the penalty parameter on convergence are analyzed via the three elements. It is shown that the 8-node element with reduction integration and the 20-node element with full integration are convergent, whereas the 8-node element with full integration is divergent. The scale effects of a slender beam, a short beam, a thin plate, and a medium-thick plate are numerically analyzed. Lastly, the scale effects of the frequencies that correspond to the bending mode, torsion mode, and tension-compression mode for a pretwisted plate are studied. It is found that the frequencies that correspond to the bending mode and torsion mode exert a scale effect, whereas the frequency that corresponds to the tension-compression mode does not. The essence of the scale effect is that the rotational deformation of the microstructure is amplified.

After the harsh economic downturn, each enterprise has been impacted more or less according to its operation characteristic and trading mode. To strive for competitive advantage and better development, besides reducing the production cost, some companies vigorously make transition and others take part in other fields. But the domestic information system integration vendors face limited demand of domestic market, the innovation of new products and price competition of old products, customers can not get good qualified products and services. Many companies lose their own advantage and will be going to close down. It is the important issue for small and medium-scale information system integration vendors that how to find the winning strategies and create their own competitive advantage in the competitive environment. This research is using the Five Forces Analysis and SWOT Analysis to discuss the Business competitive strategy of small and medium-scale information system integration vendors by interviewing senior managers of the case company A and data researching. The effect analysis reveals that the case company A can take this conclusion of research as reference, and the follow-up researchers can get the suggestions of this thesis.

This monograph seeks to examine the motivations behind the European Union’s (EU) policy towards the Common Market of the South (Mercosur), the EU’s most important relationship with another regional economic integration organisation. In order to investigate the motivations (or lack there of), this monograph will examine the contribution of the main policy and decision-makers, the European Commission and the Council of Ministers, as well as the different contributions within both institutions. By doing so, it will be possible to show the degree of “involvement”/”engagement” reflected in the EU’s policy towards Mercosur, which is the dependent variable in this study. The analysis offered here examines the development of EU policy towards Mercosur in relation to three key stages: The non-institutionalized relations (1986-1990), official relations (1991-1995), and the negotiations of an association agreement (1996-2007 and 2010-present). This degree of engagement will be measured using a scale of low, medium and high degree. The outcome of the measure is created by analysing two factors, the level of “ambition” and “commitment”.

Please check back later for the full article.Africa, a continent with the largest number of countries falling under the category of Least Developed Countries (LDCs), remains highly dependent on rain-fed agriculture that suffers from low intake of water, exacerbating the vulnerability to climate variability and anthropogenic climate change. The increasing frequency and severity of climate extremes impose major strains on the economies of these countries. The loss of livelihoods due to interaction of climate change with existing stressors is elevating internal and cross-border migration. The continent is experiencing rapid urbanization, and its cities represent the most vulnerable locations to climate change due in part to incapacitated local governance. Overall, the institutional capacity to coordinate, regulate, and facilitate development in Africa is weak. The general public is less empowered to hold government accountable. The rule of law, media, and other watchdog organizations, and systems of checks and balances are constrained in different ways, contributing to poor governance and resulting in low capacity to respond to climate risks.As a result, climate policy and governance are inseparable in Africa, and capacitating the government is as essential as establishing climate policy. With the highest level of vulnerability to climate change compared with the rest of the world, governance in Africa is pivotal in crafting and implementing viable climate policies.It is indisputable that African climate policy should focus first and foremost on adaptation to climate change. It is pertinent, therefore, to assess Africa’s governance ability to identify and address the continent’s needs for adaptation. One key aspect of effective climate policy is access to up-to-date and contextually relevant information that encompasses indigenous knowledge. African countries have endeavored to meet international requirements for reports such as the National Communications on Climate Change Impacts and Vulnerabilities and the National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPAs). However, the capacity to deliver on-time quality reports is lacking; also the implementation, in particular integration of adaptation plans into the overall development agenda, remains a challenge. There are a few successes, but overall adaptation operates mainly at project level. Furthermore, the capacity to access and effectively utilize availed international resources, such as extra funding or technology transfer, is limited in Africa.While the continent is an insignificant source of emissions on a global scale, a more forward looking climate policy would require integrating adaptation with mitigation to put in place a foundation for transformation of the development agenda, towards a low carbon driven economy. Such a futuristic approach calls for a comprehensive and robust climate policy governance that goes beyond climate to embrace the Sustainable Development Goals Agenda 2030. Both governance and climate policy in Africa will need to be viewed broadly, encompassing the process of globalization, which has paved the way to a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene. The question is, what should be the focus of climate policy and governance across Africa under the Anthropocene era?

Agro-based small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) often deal in commodities that have shorter shelf life. Given that, researchers often face challenges determining the appropriate conceptual framework to adopt, which yields results that proffer both practical and theoretical solutions to business problems, hence, it is imperative for agri-preneurs to harness technology for maximum profit and food security. The unified theory of use and acceptance of technology (UTAUT) model, which has four key predictors, was adopted with the integration of two external variables: SME Managerial Characteristics and SME Organizational Size. Factor analysis shows that five out of the six predictors loaded strongly. The study concludes that researchers in technology adoption should consider integrating organization and management quality variables into their research frameworks.

Abstract:
Analytical solutions to a set of boundary integral equations are rare, even with simple geometries and boundary conditions. To make any reasonable progress, a numerical technique must be used. There are basically four issues that must be discussed in any numerical scheme dealing with integral equations. The first and most basic one is how numerical integration can be effected, together with an effective way of dealing with singular kernels of the type encountered in elastostatics. Numerical integration is usually termed numerical quadrature, meaning mathematical formulae for numerical integration. The second issue is the boundary discretization: when integration over the whole boundary is replaced by a sum of the integrations over the individual patches on the boundary. Each patch would be a finite element, or in our case, a boundary element on the surface. Obviously a high-order integration scheme can be devised for the whole domain, thus eliminating the need for boundary discretization. Such a scheme would be problem dependent and therefore would not be very useful to us. The third issue has to do with the fact that we are constrained by the very nature of the numerical approximation process to search for solutions within a certain subspace of L2, say the space of piecewise constant functions in which the unknowns are considered to be constant over a boundary element. It is the order of this subspace, together with the order and the nature of the interpolation of the geometry, that gives rise to the names of various boundary element schemes. Finally, one is faced with the task of solving a set of linear algebraic equations, which is usually dense (the system matrix is fully populated) and potentially ill-conditioned. A direct solver such as Gauss elimination may be very efficient for small- to medium-sized problems but will become stuck in a large-scale simulation, where the only feasible solution strategy is an iterative method. In fact, iterative solution strategies lead naturally to a parallel algorithm under a suitable parallel computing environment. This chapter will review various issues involved in the practical implementation of the CDL-BIEM on a serial computer and on a distributed computing environment.

Economic interest groups proliferated after the end of the Suharto regime. They, too, became major stakeholders in foreign policy decisions, especially those with implications for the international competitiveness of Indonesian businesses. The chapter investigates how and to what extent business representatives localized EU norms of regional integration. Interestingly, public contributions of business interests to the Charter debate were rare, and the economic implications of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) envisaged in the Charter were discussed only much later. Yet responses to the AEC’s common market and production base differed. While EU-style market-opening reforms were supported by large, export-oriented firms, the majority of small- and medium-scale industries producing for the domestic market rejected them. Business representatives localized reforms imitating the EU model, too, thereby relying on ancient prosperity ideas, the vulnerability discourse, leadership, and soft power.

This chapter examines the power dynamics which can exist in processes of regional integration. While regional integration can be pursued in such a way that it is mutually beneficial to all participants, economies of scale and political unification can equally be achieved at the expense of the political sovereignty, economic advantage, and communal identity of less powerful communities. This was the case with the communities of the middle Scamander valley in the late Classical and Hellenistic periods: a region of the Troad which had supported up to seven small to medium-sized cities in the Classical period was carved up by Ilion and Alexandreia Troas in the course of the Hellenistic period, leaving only Skepsis independent by the second century BC. This process is usually assumed to have begun with Antigonos Monophthalmos in the 300s. However, this unequal power dynamic between coast and interior had already existed in the Classical period and was allowed to develop by the nature of Persian rule. The chapter examines the impact which the creation of a royal horse stud in the middle Scamander valley in the fourth century BC will have had on this region and places this development within the longer history of the unequal power dynamic between coast and interior in the Troad.

The purpose of using linear encoders is to give precise position control in dynamic applications. Furthermore, using linear encoders helps minimize errors caused by human or mechanical problems such as backlash and thermal expansion [2]. There are various types of linear encoders such as mechanical, optical, magnetic, etc. Nevertheless, magnetic encoders are able to withstand harsh environment such as oil, grease, and dust much effective than the rest. Magnetic encoders have several advantageous qualities: low cost, fast response, and high reliability [1, 3]. Figure 1 shows the magnetic field of a magnetic scale where the yellow curves indicate the change of magnetic poles. The upper half of the scale is the incremental mark and the bottom half is the reference mark. Prior to magnetization, the scale has only the incremental mark, and the magnetizing process is to magnetize bottom half of the incremental mark into reference mark as shown in Fig. 1.

Abstract This paper describes a multi-scale thermal analysis approach for the design of an air-cooled 1.7-kV SiC MOSFET-based medium-voltage variable-speed motor drive. The scope of the models and required efficient and flexible thermal models to be developed. Two modeling techniques are described that significantly reduced model run time and enabled more complex models to be run faster while retaining needed accuracy. The first technique uses the effectiveness-NTU method to extract convection boundary conditions from a CFD model that can be applied to a fast-running FEA model. The second is a porous media technique that enables system-level CFD simulations that incorporate effects from heat exchangers (e.g., pin fin heat sinks) that run in a fraction of the time required for fully resolved CFD simulations. The multi-scale approach to the thermal analysis enabled fast and accurate simulation for the converter design ranging from the die level up to the full system with 36 submodules. The modeling results were validated against experimental data from system tests performed by OSU.

For a gas turbine generating set to operate on Medium BTU gas, it takes dedicated design of both engine and auxiliaries. A new combustion section, with extensive test support, has been developed. Alternative options to reduce inlet air flow and NOx emissions have been compared and appropriate solutions adopted. All auxiliaries systems have been modified according to the gas fuel characteristics. Integration between plant systems has been carefully evaluated and a control system implemented in order to reach maximum reliability. The paper deals with different technical aspects of the engine as well as the plant design.

Abstract The typical combined heat and power plants requires the introduction of additional heating medium. The alternative solution is the direct integration of the exhaust gases from heat engine. High temperature, surplus oxygen and low water content of the Gas Turbines exhaust gases enabled the successful integration at industrial scale as: preheated combustion air for industrial furnaces, heat source for drying and for absorption chillers. The article comprises the reference list for direct exhaust gas integration of GTs produced by Baker Hughes formerly GE), the processes overview, GTs selection criteria, as well as the review of documented GTs applications in process industry focusing on technical and economic considerations. Majority of referenced applications for industrial furnace are in the steam methane reformers used in fertilizer industry, as well as steam crackers in petrochemical industries. Several GTs were integrated with crude oil furnace in refinery. Direct drying utilizing exhaust gas from GT, is commonly applied in ceramic, wood derivative, pulp & paper and inorganic chemicals industries. Integrating GTs with absorption chillers was introduced to serve the district heating and cooling system. The described solutions allowed to reduce specific energy consumption by 7–20% or the costs of energy consumption associated with large volume production by 15–30%. The reduction of specific energy consumption allows to decrease the amount of CO2 emitted. The overall efficiency of cogeneration plant above 90% was achieved.

Abstract Studies on medium to high strain-rate characterization (≥ 0.1s−1) of lead-free solder are relatively few, primarily due to the lack of available methods for testing. Prior work in literature uses Split Hopkinson Bar (SPHB) experiments for high strain-rate characterization (≥ 300s−1) [1,2], while a modified micro-scale tester is used for medium strain-rate characterization (0.005s−1 to 300s−1) [3] and an impact hammer test setup for testing in a strain-rate regime from 1s−1 to 100s−1 [4]. However, there is still limited data in strain-rate regimes of relevance, specifically for drop shock applications. In this paper, we present orthogonal metal cutting as a novel method to characterize lead-free solder alloys. Experiments are carried out using a wedgelike tool that cuts through a work piece at a fixed depth and rake angle while maintaining a constant cutting velocity. These experiments are conducted at room temperature on Sn1.0Ag0.5Cu bulk test specimens with strain-rates varying from 0.32 to 48s−1. The range of strain-rates is only limited by the ball screw driven slide allowing higher strain-rates if needed. The strains and strain-rates are captured through Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) using sequential images taken from a high-speed camera just ahead of the cutting tool. The PIV enables non-contact recording of high strain-rate deformations, while the dynamometer on the cutting head allows one to capture the forces exerted during the cutting process. Results for the stress-strain response obtained through the experiments are compared to prior work for validation. Orthogonal metal cutting is shown to be a potentially attractive method for characterization of solder at higher strain-rates.

The availability of cost effective storage capacity is considered essential for increasing the share of renewables in electricity generation. With the development of solar thermal power plants large thermal storage systems have become commercial in recent years. Various storage concepts are applied, systems using solid storage media are operated at a maximum temperature of 680 °C, other systems using molten salt as storage medium show thermal capacities in the GWh range. Heating these storage systems directly by surplus electricity and using the heat later during the discharge process to operate turbines is not very attractive, since the process is limited by the Carnot efficiency. Alternatively, surplus electricity can be used to transform low temperature heat into high temperature heat which is stored in a thermal storage system during the charging process. During discharge, this heat is used to drive a turbine generating electric energy. Theoretically, this concept allows a roundtrip efficiency of 100%. Various options for the implementation of this storage concept have been suggested, using air or CO2 as working fluids. Recently, DLR has demonstrated the operability of a latent heat storage system connected to a steam circuit at 100 bar. The availability of this latent heat storage technology allows new implementations of the storage concept based on heat transformation. Using a left-running Rankine cycle during the charging process, heat from the environment is used to evaporate steam, which is compressed using the surplus electricity. Superheated steam exiting the compressor flows through the thermal storage system composed of latent heat storage sections and sensible heat storage sections. After throttling, the water enters the evaporator again. During discharging, heat from the storage system is used to evaporate and superheat steam, which drives the turbine. A cascaded implementation of this concept, using ammonia for the low temperature part of the process, while water is used for the high temperature part, reaches a storage efficiency of 70%. The integration of low temperature waste heat sources allows the compensation of losses.

In September 2020, the British Academy was asked by the Government Office for Science to produce an independent review to address the question: What are the long-term societal impacts of COVID-19? This short but substantial question led us to a rapid integration of evidence and an extensive consultation process. As history has shown us, the effects of a pandemic are as much social, cultural and economic as they are about medicine and health. Our aim has been to deliver an integrated view across these areas to start understanding the long-term impacts and how we address them. Our evidence review – in our companion report, The COVID decade – concluded that there are nine interconnected areas of long-term societal impact arising from the pandemic which could play out over the coming COVID decade, ranging from the rising importance of local communities, to exacerbated inequalities and a renewed awareness of education and skills in an uncertain economic climate. From those areas of impact we identified a range of policy issues for consideration by actors across society, about how to respond to these social, economic and cultural challenges beyond the immediate short-term crisis. The challenges are interconnected and require a systemic approach – one that also takes account of dimensions such as place (physical and social context, locality), scale (individual, community, regional, national) and time (past, present, future; short, medium and longer term). History indicates that times of upheaval – such as the pandemic – can be opportunities to reshape society, but that this requires vision and for key decisionmakers to work together. We find that in many places there is a need to start afresh, with a more systemic view, and where we should freely consider whether we might organise life differently in the future. In order to consider how to look to the future and shape the COVID decade, we suggest seven strategic goals for policymakers to pursue: build multi-level governance; improve knowledge, data and information linkage and sharing; prioritise digital infrastructure; reimagine urban spaces; create an agile education and training system; strengthen community-led social infrastructure; and promote a shared social purpose. These strategic goals are based on our evidence review and our analysis of the nine areas of long-term societal impact identified. We provide a range of illustrative policy opportunities for consideration in each of these areas in the report that follows.
