Sound waves can occur not only in solid medium but also in air and water mediums. The effect of amplitude and frequency on the speed of sound waves differs between air and water mediums. The speed of sound waves cannot be seen with the naked eye. A virtual lab is needed to determine the speed of sound wave propagation. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of amplitude and frequency on the speed of sound waves in air and water medium. Thirty drivers were recruited to conduct a psychophysical experiment on speed perception using a driving simulator. In today's environmentally aware society the large-bore diesel engine is not alone in coming under scrutiny. Although only 0.25 to 0.35% among the total exhaust gases produced by this type of engine are toxious compounds, even such small amounts still need to be reduced further. MAN B&W Diesel, market leaders in the production of large-bore two-and four-stroke diesel engines covering the output bracket between 680 hp and almost 100 000 hp per engine (Fig. 1), have been facing up to this challenge for almost a decade. After a brief history of the introduction of galvanically applied overlays to the surface of thin-walled half-bearings, the paper goes on to describe experiences in service engines. This shows that from the mid-1970s, overlay life could be sharply reduced due to a variety (or combination) of factors. These are described, the possible causes explained, and various palliatives investigated. The principle factor in the mid-1970s was the rapid rise in the use of lower quality heavy fuels initiated by escalating oil costs. The consequence of using these fuels was often rapid overlay loss, which in

Rotors in fluid-film bearing supported turbomachinery are known to develop elliptical orbits as a result of rotor-bearing interactions, mass unbalance within the rotor, gravitational bending of the shaft and external excitation. In synchronous whirl, where the speed at which the shaft travels about the orbit is equal to the rotational speed of the rotor, temperature gradients may develop across the journal as a result of viscous shear in the bearingâ s lubricant film. This thermal gradient leads to bending of the shaft in a phenomenon known as The Morton Effect. Such thermally induced bend

The extent of those boundaries separating regions with different acoustical properties will be much larger than the wavelength of the sound. Many cases to be examined he

A literature review was conducted to establish and highlight the state of the art for real-time quality monitoring (RTQM). Work in this task advanced the state of the art in terms of achieving constant welding power input at constant contact tip-to-workpiece distance (CTWD), thus achieving constant welding heat input at constant welding travel speed. This was coupled with high speed on-board DAQ to achieve RTQM, in these terms.
