Full textThis dissertation focuses on emotions in mediation with the overall aim to increase knowledge about mediation strategies for dealing with disputants’ emotions, studied through interview methodology. The study illuminates four major themes containing different strategies accompanied by the respondents’ reasoning. The mediator has power and the disputants have power are themes which include strategies that contrast each other. The themes support and clarify, and atmosphere, contain additional strategies for handling disputants’ emotions. The presented strategies are surrounded by both criticism and support within prior research and moreover the study highlights strategies that are not in focus within current research regarding mediation and emotions. The study points out tendencies that can be used to develop, adjust and complement existing theories and models, even though there is a great need for similar studies. In addition, the study puts light on strategies that have good potential to be used by mediators in practice.

Full textTitle: Victim–offender mediation, a forgotten solution for juvenile delinquency? In this integrative literature study, existing research on mediation in crimes for young offenders and their victims has been compiled. As the method of mediation is used to a lesser extent in Sweden, despite the fact that it is a statutory municipal obligation, our purpose of the study was to investigate whether the legislator's intentions with the method of benefiting both parties were met and, if so, in what way. Eighteen articles have been selected and presented in a thematic form by a systematic literature search and subsequently analyzed from two theoretical perspectives. The result shows that mediation broadly complies with the legislator's intentions and is a peaceful forum where young offenders and their victims through dialogue are given the opportunity to reach insights which can lead to liberation for both parties. Problems can occur if mediation occurs inadvertently or by pressure as it undermines the possibility of insight. The results show the importance of education for and supervision of the mediators/the social services which could be provided by a comprehensive government coordinator.

Full textBackground: Victim offender mediation in criminal cases involving youth offenders is an important part of the judiciary and of social work. Mediation, which is part of the philosophy of reparative justice, intends to benefit both the perpetrator and the victim. It also strives to promote recidivism and prosocial behavior of the perpetrator. Aim: The aim of the study is to investigate which main themes can be identified in previous research on the subject. Method: A scoping review approach of literature study with applied thematic analysis was used as a method to answer the purpose. Searches were performed in the database Primo. Ten studies were selected. The selected articles were quality reviewed and analyzed according to the themes. Result: The interest among crime victims in participating in mediation is large and mediation can be a very important part of the victim's rehabilitation process. Many victims have positive experiences of the mediation process and its effects, but also experience of disappointment in the process and its results are common among the victims. Receiving an apology from your perpetrator is very important for most victims who participate in mediation. The apology is also important to the perpetrator and hope of forgiveness from one’s victim is common among the perpetrators. Forgiveness, together with other aspects, affects whether the mediation process creates a reduction in recidivism for these perpetrators. The mediator has a very important role in the mediation process and affects all aspects of how it progresses and what it results in. Conclusion: The mediation process is important for the individuals who participate and has the potential to influence a victim's rehabilitation and a perpetrator's future social behavior and criminal path.

Full textThe present work proposes to carry out a business consultancy to MEDLIFE, an American, non-profit, non-governmental organization (hereinafter the NGO), which began operations in 2004, providing support to communities in need in the medical, educational and development fields, and that operates at national and international level, being Peru, the main beneficiary of its activities. The NGO stands out for the originality of its proposal, which consists in the sale of tourist packages; which represent its help services; to its clients/volunteers, and through which it generates most of its funding. The consultancy carried out an analysis of its general situation and context, relying on tools such as the SWOT, PESTE, AMOFHIT analyses, the VESTER Matrix analysis and the Ishikawa Spine Diagram, to obtain a diagnosis of the organization that allowed us to identify the problems it faces and define their key problems: the non-diversification of its income and its low brand positioning in the Peruvian market. Finally, and based on the key problems identified, a survey was conducted at the level of formal companies, finding a wide range from 20% to 60% (depending of their industry) of them participating in social responsibility projects, to which they dedicate up to the 10% of their income, situation taken into account to propose and evaluate various solution alternatives, that include the development of a product portfolio, its promotion to potential clients, the exposure through the participation in business and student fairs, the hiring of a public relations officer, and the creation of a multidisciplinary team, proposing the latter alternative which was considered the most appropriate, and for which an implementation plan was presented along with its expected results in order to help the NGO to optimize its internal and external dynamics, and through this, achieve its Vision and Mission in accordance with its principles and values.

Full textWild medlar (Vangueria infausta subsp. infausta) is a popular indigenous fruit available and consumed by rural communities in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Inadequate post-harvest practices in indigenous fruit plants including V. infausta fruit forms major constrains in expanding their production. There is scanty information documented on neither objective nor subjective harvesting indices of indigenous fruit plants consumed by locals in sub-Saharan Africa. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the effect of harvesting time on physico-chemical properties and selected nutritional composition of V. infausta fruit. Fruits were harvested twice, where two harvesting times were regarded as treatments and each tree as replication. The reduction for fruit weight, sugar content and sugar/acid ratio was highly significant (P ≤ 0.05), whereas for average fruit diameter, seed weight, acid ratio and pH content this may imply that the listed parameters are treatment which was non-significant (P ≤ 0.05). The treatment reduced P, K, Mn and Fe by 33%, 18%, 3% and 7%, respectively. On the other hand, treatments had no effect on N and Ca. The reduction of phosphorus was highly significant (P ≤ 0.05), whereas for N, K, Ca, Mn and Fe treatment impact was non-significant (P ≤ 0.05). Similarly, the treatment consistently reduced moisture content and increased dry matter and crude protein of V. infausta by 76%, 300% and 7%, respectively. The reduction of moisture content, increase in dry matter was highly significant (P ≤ 0.05), whereas crude protein treatment impact was non-significant (P ≤ 0.05). The data indicated that the best time to harvest V. infausta fruit was during January when fruits were cosmetically appealing and not wrinkled. This study demonstrated that there was less variation in some measured objective harvesting indices of V. infausta fruit harvested at two harvesting time. More work would be required to do physico-chemical properties and selected mineral elements analysis from wide growth habitat for conclusive recommendations.

Full textThis study is divided into five sections. The first section consists of patent applications and granted patents issued by USPTO, WIPO), and EPO. In this section the relationship between the GDP and country’s patent quantity is analysed. The second section analysis the patent literature in MEDLINE. In this section a scientometric analysis is performed to assess the quantitative trend of patent literature in MEDLINE throughout 1965-2005. The third section analysis the patent literature in the SCI. In this section all documents indexed as a topic of “patents” in the SCI throughout 1965-2005 are analysed. The fourth section analysis the citations to the patent documents indexed in the SCI, and illustrate the average number of cited references per paper for patent citing documents. The fifth section analysis the references per paper in the SCI through 1970-2005. The Analyses of data showed: The USA is the leading country filing and granting patents followed by Japan and Germany respectively. The half-life of citations to the patent-documents is 41% higher than the half-life of citations to the general scientific documents in the SCI. The number of references per paper from 1970 to 2005 has steadily increased. The rough constant percentage of self-citation of journals and the growing increase of references per paper led to the absolute growing number of self-citations and to the increase of the Impact Factor of the citing journals in the SCI. The editorial policy of languages is being changed in MEDLINE and in the SCI. The consideration of policy makers in these databases have been focused on the literature of science in English. There was a tendency in the last decades towards collaboration in scientific publishing with American authors that can be observed in the SCI with authors from different countries.

Full textIn this thesis we propose a new method for searching for gene products gene products and give annotations associating genes with Gene Ontology codes. Many solutions already exists, using different techniques, however few are capable of addressing the whole GO hierarchy. We propose a method for exploring this hierarchy by dividing it into subtrees, trying to find terms that are characteristics for the subtrees involved. Using a feature selection based on chi-square analysis and naive Bayes classification to find the correct GO nodes.

Full textThe aim of this paper was to develop a system for identification of biomedical entities, such as protein and gene names, from a corpora of Medline abstracts. Another aim was to manage to extract the most relevant terms from the set of identified biomedical terms and make them readily presentable for an end-user. The developed prototype, named iMasterThesis, uses a dictionary-based approach to the problem. A dictionary, consisting of 21K gene names and 425K protein names, was constructed in an automatic fashion. With the realization of the protein name dictionary as a multi-level tree structure of hash tables, the approach tries to facilitate a more flexible and relaxed matching scheme than previous approaches. The system was evaluated against a golden standard consisting of 101 expert-annotated Medline abstracts. It is capable of identifying protein and gene names from these abstracts with a 10% recall and 14% precision. It seems clear that for further improvements of the obtained results, the quality of the dictionary needs to be increased, possibly through manual inspection by domain experts. A graphical user interface, presenting an end-user with the most relevant terms identified, has been developed as well.

Full textThis study analyses the results of end-user instruction through the databases modulated course in CD-ROM MEDLINE / LILACS, modality of the Library of the School of Public Health of University of S.Paulo Educational Program, offered to health sciences scientists and postgraduate students. It uses a mailed questionnaire which was answered by 66% of the 140 course participants between November/1993 and November/1995. The whole of the category studied was 92 end-users. The results demonstrate that former students, who have done researches in the Library, managed, in most cases (65,2%), to acquire autonomy in using databases, some of them (15,2%) requested librarians interventions, and some of them (19,6%) didn´t use the databases of the Public Health Library, during this period. It determines the end-user searching profile and it shows that the course is mainly looked for by the postgraduate students (79,3%), health area (81,5%), for their academic activities (79,4%) and by those who look for information access autonomy (72,8%) when they decide to participate in such courses. The users who do intermediary searching, appear to use an intermediary mainly for reasons such as: the lack of information technology, lack of familiarity with databases, reliability in the searches made by librarians and, lack of time for searching. The results demonstrate that 79,4% of end-users would like to do both end-user searching and intermediary searching. This study also analyses the Course contents, structure, methodology and didactic materials. This paper gets to the conclusion that end-users, in the whole, consider to be more important that the Library maintains this course and this kind of information user continuous educational program. This survey findings suggests other evaluations to be held to check the end-users performance.

Introduction: A high-quality electronic search is essential in ensuring accuracy and comprehensivness in identifying potentially relevant records in conducting a systematic review. To assist researchers in identifying terms when formulating a sensitive search strategy, librarians and educators instruct researchers to consult and include preferred and non-preferred terms of the controlled database. However, by using all available terms in the thesaurus (i.e. subject headings), strategies can be lengthy and very laborious. Objective: To identify the most efficient method for searching in both Medline through PubMed and EMBASE, covering search terms with different spellings, direct and indirect orders, and association (or lack thereof) with MeSH and EMTREE terms. Method: In our cross-sectional study of search strategies, we selected and analysed 37 search strategies specifically developed for the anesthesiology field. These search strategies were adapted in order to cover all potentially relevant search terms in terms of different spellings and direct and indirect orders, most efficiently. Results: When adapted to include different spellings and direct and indirect orders, adapted versions of the selected search strategies retrieved the same number of search results in the Medline (mean of 61,3%) and higher number in EMBASE (mean of 63,9%) of the analyzed sample. The number of results retrieved by the searches analysed was not identical using the association or not of MeSH and EMTREE terms; however the association of these terms from both controlled vocabularies retireved a large number of records compared to the use of either one of them. Conclusions: In view of these results, we recommend the use of search terms which include preferred and non-preferred terms (i.e., different spellings and direct/indirect order of the same term) and associated MeSH and EMTREE terms, in order to develop highly-sensitive search strategies for systematic reviews.

Full textWe analyzed the Mexican research in Health Sciences included in MEDLINE, between the period of 1987-2001. The objective was to know its international impact. Results showed that there is a constant growth in the studied period, and that most of scientific articles has been written in universities institutions, mainly the UNAM, and in government Institutes of Health. The greater international impact was obtained by papers elaborated by UNAM researchers, and the centralization of the investigation in few regions of the country was identified. Also, the biochemistry, the neurociencias and the pharmacology were the disciplines with a greater number of received cites.

Tools to automatically summarize gene information from the literature have the potential to help genomics researchers better interpret gene expression data and investigate biological pathways. Even though several useful human-curated databases of information about genes already exist, these have significant limitations. First, their construction requires intensive human labor. Second, curation of genes lags behind the rapid publication rate of new research and discoveries. Finally, most of the curated knowledge is limited to information on single genes. As such, most original and up-to-date knowledge on genes can only be found in the immense amount of unstructured, free text biomedical literature. Genomic researchers frequently encounter the task of finding information on sets of differentially expressed genes from the results of common highthroughput technologies like microarray experiments. However, finding information on a set of genes by manually searching and scanning the literature is a time-consuming and daunting task for scientists. For example, PubMed, the first choice of literature research for biologists, usually returns hundreds of references for a search on a single gene in reverse chronological order. Therefore, a tool to summarize the available textual information on genes could be a valuable tool for scientists. In this study, we adapted automatic summarization technologies to the biomedical domain to build a query-based, task-specific automatic summarizer of information on mouse genes studied in microarray experiments - mouse Gene Information Clustering and Summarization System (GICSS). GICSS first clusters a set of differentially expressed genes by Medical Subject Heading (MeSH), Gene Ontology (GO), and free text features into functionally similar groups;next it presents summaries for each gene as ranked sentences extracted from MEDLINE abstracts, with the ranking emphasizing the relation between genes, similarity to the function cluster it belongs to, and recency. GICSS is available as a web application with links to the PubMed (www.pubmed.gov) website for each extracted sentence. It integrates two related steps, functional gene clustering and gene information gathering, of the microarray data analysis process. The information from the clustering step was used to construct the context for summarization. The evaluation of the system was conducted with scientists who were analyzing their real microarray datasets. The evaluation results showed that GICSS can provide meaningful clusters for real users in the genomic research area. In addition, the results also indicated that presenting sentences in the abstract can provide more important information to the user than just showing the title in the default PubMed format. Both domain-specific and non-domain-specific terminologies contributed in the informative sentences selection. Summarization may serve as a useful tool to help scientists to access information at the time of microarray data analysis. Further research includes setting up the automatic update of MEDLINE records; extending and fine-tuning of the feature parameters for sentence scoring using the available evaluation data; and expanding GICSS to incorporate textual information from other species. Finally, dissemination and integration of GICSS into the current workflow of the microarray analysis process will help to make GICSS a truly useful tool for the targeted users, biomedical genomics researchers.

"Détection automatisée de signaux en pharmacovigilance chez la femme enceinte à partir de bases médico-administratives Prescription drug use during pregnancy in France: a study from the national health insurance permanent sample Identifying drugs inducing prematurity by mining claims data with high-dimensional confounder score strategies." Thesis, université Paris-Saclay, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020UPASV011.
Full textThe use of drugs is often necessary during pregnancy despite a lack of knowledge of their adverse effects on pregnancy or the fetus. The identification of adverse reactions to marketed drugs using statistical signal detection tools classically relies on the use of large spontaneous reporting databases in which pregnancy status is unfrequent. Health claims databases are increasingly used in pharmacoepidemiology studies, including those of pregnant women. They are therefore a potential resource for automated pharmacovigilance. In France, the National Health Data System covers almost the entire French population and the thesis focuses on the use of its permanent sample, the Permanent Beneficiaries Sample (EGB). The first axis describes the prescription of drugs for pregnant women and more particularly teratogenic or fetotoxic drugs and supplementations recommended during pregnancy. The results of this work are that pregnant women are dispensed a lot of medications. Known risk drugs are rarely prescribed during pregnancy and recommended supplementation is increased during the study period. Pregnant women on low incomes have more drug prescribed but fewer supplementations. The second axis focuses on the development of a signal detection methodology based on the use of the propensity score or the prognostic score in high dimension. This methodology is applied to identify drugs possibly associated with an increased risk of prematurity. A detection criterion derived from these scores, the p-RD (p-value relative decrease), is proposed and its relevance assessed through a reference set created from a manual review of the MEDLINE literature supplemented by pharmacological expertise. The results show that the use of the p-RD derived from the prognostic score makes it possible to better take into account confusion, and to limit indication and protopathic bias. For the third axis, the p-RD is applied to twenty specific or non-specific pregnancy pathologies and combined with an automated query of MeSH keywords from MEDLINE articles. The relevance of the signals generated by the p-RD depends on both the frequency of drug exposure and pathology and whether the pathology is well characterized. Automated query allows easy annotation of known adverse drug reactions. In conclusion, this thesis shows the value of medico-administrative data for analyzing the evolution of drug prescription during pregnancy and for the detection of pharmacovigilance signals in pregnancy
