Abstract:
A one dimensional, linearized, shallow water model finite difference scheme was developed to generate data representing both depth averaged velocities and depth fluctuations above or below the still water level in a river. After applying suitable boundary conditions based on the theory of characteristics, the model was then tested against another numerical model. An artificial neural network (ANN) model for both depth and velocity with zero bottom friction was designed to use as a precursor to a full friction model. The model was extensively trained and tested over a 600 Km length, using generated data, to obtain information on the optimum structure of the neural network and various parameters. The model was then finally trained and validated over a 1200 Km length to avoid the danger of overfitting. Using this frictionless model, it was extended to incorporate the effects of bottom friction. However, it was observed that the ANN was incapable of simulating rapid changes in the data close to the downstream boundary because of possible conflict between the nonlinearized bottom friction and linearized boundary conditions. To overcome this difficulty, the standard bipolar activation function was replaced by a modified LeCun activation function. Subsequently, the neural networks were then re-trained and re-validated. Prior to applying the ANNs to the confluence of the rivers Thames and Medway, the networks were tested for their adaptability to a variation of certain parameters. The models demonstrated good universal approximation capabilities when varying the imposed velocities, still water depths and friction coefficients. Apart from minor discrepancies in generated depth and velocity data at the precise juncture of the two rivers, the networks showed more than adequate performance when simulating the flow in the two rivers.

Mihal, Colleen. "Democracy, Citizens' Media, and Resistance: A Study of the New River Free Press." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/10020.

Full text
Abstract:
A central concern of media scholars such as Ben Bagdikian and Robert McChesney is the undemocratic potential of the U.S. mainstream media system, dominated by a small number of highly consolidated, multinational, corporate media firms. In this context, other scholars, including Chris Atton, John Downing, Stephen Duncombe, Nina Eliasoph, and Clemencia Rodriguez, have argued for the importance of citizens' media, defined as citizen-run, non-profit, independent media projects that may have greater democratic potential. Since the majority of research into citizens' media has focused on media from urban cities, this thesis offers discussion and analysis of a progressive citizen's paper, the New River Free Press, located in a rural, Appalachian community that is home to a large technical, military, state university. After first reviewing major scholarly criticism of mainstream media in a democratic society and characteristics and debates about citizen's media, this thesis uses interviews of key staff members and textual analysis of archived past issues of the New River Free Press to situate the paper in the citizen's media literature. Ultimately, this thesis locates citizens' media as a necessity for democratic societies, suggesting methods of resistance against undemocratic practice and the further consolidation and monopolization of the global media system.

Abstract:
This thesis examines how the construction of news stories reveals relationships among groups of stakeholders and how their views unfold within environmental conflict coverage. This study uses a content analysis of 161 newspaper articles concerning the sea lion and salmon controversy at the Bonneville Dam, focusing on source use and blame and solution frames in environmental conflict coverage. This analysis of articles published between January 2003 and June 2010 in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, and Montana contributes to research concerning journalistic norms (i.e., balance and objectivity) and news production routines, specifically within the field of environmental reporting. The findings indicate governmental sources were most frequently quoted and presented the most successful solution frames; while advocacy/non-profit sources were quoted less frequently (in addition to tribal sources) and presented the most blame and failed solution frames. Additionally, this research reflects on the role of news filters, including journalistic norms and legal issues, and explores the relationship between blame frames and failed solution frames, which is perhaps a reflection of the role of spokespeople and media jargon.

Feldes, Klara Katharina. "Media Discourses on the Interlinking of Rivers in India." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/20334.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1954 India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru proclaimed dams to be the “temples of modern India”. Based on the theses that this “developmental imagination” so visible in Nehru’s statement continues to be a prominent feature in discourses on large scale infrastructure projects in India until today, and that the media plays an important role in shaping these public discourses, the dissertation considers the question of how large scale water infrastructure schemes are covered within the Indian media landscape. To answer that question, a media analysis is conducted which focuses on the reporting on the Indian National River Linking Project (NRLP) and on two schemes being implemented under the NRLP: The Ken-Betwa and the Polavaram Dam Projects. The 168-billion-dollar NRLP project is the world’s largest water project in the making and includes the construction of several dams. It is designed to connect the majority of Indian rivers to a gigantic water grid. It is controversially debated, especially with regard of ecological and social costs. After a historical embedding of the topic, the media analysis is conducted through a choice of magazines and newspapers in a time period from 2000 until 2016. Furthermore, the dissertation incorporates a chapter based on field work in the Polavaram Dam area in order to shed light on perspectives often marginalised in the media discourses: those of the affected communities. The dissertation reveals the continuum of developmental imaginations in the discourses on India’s large scale infrastructure projects until today, points out how power hierarchies are at work with regard to who is able to participate in the discourses and who is not, and highlights narratives closely linked to ideas of nation- or statebuilding that are used by politicians within the media discourses.

Mushwana, Tinyiko. "A critical discourse analysis of representations of the Niger Delta conflict in four prominent Western anglophone newspapers." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1007745.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the manner in which the conflict in the oil-rich Niger Delta in Nigeria is represented in western Anglophone media. Large oil reserves in the Niger Delta have contributed millions of dollars towards the growth of Nigeria's export economy. Despite this, the Niger Delta is the least developed region in the country and is characterised by high rates of inequality. Residents of the Niger Delta have been outraged by the lack of action on the part of the Nigerian government and multinational oil corporations. Their discontent over the inequalities in the region has resulted in the proliferation of armed groups and militants who often use violent and criminal tactics to communicate their disgruntlement. This thesis closely examines the representations of the violent insurgency in the Niger Delta by conducting a Critical Discourse Analysis of 145 news texts selected from four western Anglophone newspapers from 2007 to 2011. The depiction of the conflict as it appears in the four newspapers is discussed in relation to an overview of scholarly literature which explores the portrayal of Africa not only in western media, but also in other forms of western scholarship and writing. The research undertaken in this study reveals that to a significant extent representations of the Niger Delta conflict echo and reflect some of the stereotypical and age-old negative imagery that informs meanings constructed about the African continent. However, the analysis of the news texts also shows that there are certainly efforts amongst some newspapers to move beyond simplistic representations of the conflict. The disadvantage however, is that these notable attempts tend to be marred by the use of pejorative language which typically invokes negative images associated with Africa. This study argues that the implications of these representations are highly significant as these representations not only affect the way in which the conflict is understood, but also the manner in which the international community responds to it.

Abstract:
Water pollution has become a global issue with impacts in all countries but particularly those undergoing rapid urbanisation such as China. The review for this thesis established that in 2015 China had 3,910 urban treatment plants with daily treatment capacity of 167million cubic metres. This treatment capacity was able to serve more than 90% of the population in urban regions. Compared to the previous 20 years, these treatment facilities represented a major improvement. However, the thesis uses recent annual environmental reports to show that this level of treatment is still not enough to avoid serious water pollution, more than 30% of Chinese rivers were classified as polluted. The main reason for this it is suggested is that most of treatment infrastructure is for urban areas and the rural areas still lack even basic treatment and rural communities represents about half the total Chinese population. The statistics reported in Chapter 2.1 indicates only 25.3% of towns and 11% of villages are connected to treatment facilities. It was concluded that this lower treatment rate was the major factor impacting on the water environment. Therefore, it is important to improve treatment infrastructure in China remote areas. The literature suggested that trickling filter (TF) technology had advantages as wastewater treatment in this type of situation namely Chinese rural areas. This thesis therefore reports on research to upgrade the TF basic processes to remove newly prioritized nutrient pollutants using novel, sustainable and easily available local media, these were; zeolite, maifan stone, recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), brick, blast furnace slag and dolomite. The media were screened using simple absorption tests first focussing on P removal and then a short-listed group tested under dynamic pilot scale. Further static experiments were carried out on this group to understand the mechanisms involved. The pilot tests used the selected concrete and brick. The best performers against traditional media controls and the results showed pollutant removal (COD, TSS, Turbidity, TOC and N) in line with previous models. The media, except concrete, however released phosphorus. This was further confirmed by batch tests with different operating conditions which found the media released P when the initial P concentration was below 10mg/l or above 15mg/l. Concrete was not affected and continued to adsorb P under all conditions (Chapter 4). It was recommended that tests using crushed concrete for tertiary treatment be carried out. Concrete was further studies by isotherm models the best fit was the Langmuir equation with a maximum adsorption of 6.88mg/g. The mechanism of adsorption was ionic attraction determined by kinetic study and thermodynamic models. The adsorption capacity was compared with other literature, and the results from this study suggested a larger size of crushed concrete (2-5mm) could be used for P removal as effectively as smaller sizes. In order to determine the phase of the P adsorbed, sequential extractions were carried out. The results confirmed labile or easily removed P (LBP) dominated (44%) followed by refractory or occluded P (O-P), Ca-P, Mg-P and Al-P. The literature, suggested LBP would be easily available to plants and the RCA could be reused for plant nutrient supply. Different grades of RCA in terms of their original water to cement ratio (W/C) were also tested for P removal. The study showed high W/C ratio removed more P due to the greater porosity and larger pore sizes than the lower W/C ratio.

Stott, Rebecca Kathleen. "The kiss of death : a demystification of the late-nineteenth century 'femme fatale' in the works of Bram Stoker, Rider Haggard, Joseph Conrad and Thomas Hardy." Thesis, University of York, 1989. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/4267/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis takes its beginnings from the work of Mario Praz, The Romantic Agony and from Michel Foucault's The History of Sexuality, Vol. 1. Praz has argued that the construction of the 'femme fatale' as a recognizable type is a phenomenon of the late nineteenth century. Foucault proposes that the nineteenth century is characterised not by a repression of sexual discourses but by a multiplication of centres from which such discourses are produced. The thesis places the 'femme fatale' in the socio-historical context of the 90s and searches both for the plurality of discourses mobilised to define her, and for her presence in other non-literary discourses of the period such as those of evolutionary theory, craniology, criminology and imperialist discourses. It locates this figure in a wide range of contexts: late nineteenth-century debates about female sexuality, biological determinism, theories of decadence and degeneration, invasion anxieties and the censorship debate. It juxtaposes two 'popular' novelists (Stoker and Haggard) with two 'major' novelists (Conrad and Hardy) to demonstrate that the particular discourses mobilised to describe the 'femme fatale' are to be found in works of differing literary 'quality' and in different literary genres. Chapter One examines the representation of the female vampires in Bram Stoker's Dracula in the context of Foucauldian theory about the production of sexual discourses in medicine and science in this period. These 'sexualised' women are contagious and must be annihilated. Chapter No explores the conflation of sexual and imperialist discourses in Rider Haggard's adventure fiction, particularly in She and King Solomon's Mines. Ayesha is an invading sexual being and FET- 'death in the flames can be seen as a 'devolution' into a 'monkey woman': an unveiling. This chapter also examines the other female 'missing links' of Haggard's fiction. Chapter Three continues the exploration of sexual and imperialist discourses, here in the early novels of Conrad: Almayer's Folly and An Outcast of the Islands, in particular. It explores the way in which Conrad's native women merge into jungle landscapes and into twilight; they signify the threatening 'otherness' of the jungle and of language. This chapter concludes with an examination of Winnie Verloc of the Secret Agent as female murderess and as 'free woman'. Chapter Four focuses on Hardy's Tess as victim and as murderess. It proposes a reading of Tess of the d'Urbervilles as a response to the enforced censorship of the text (Tess) expressed via the moral censure and execution of Tess. A short theoretical Afterword draws on feminist theory and Derridean analysis of phallocentrism to propose that the 'femme fatale' of this period is a sign signifying a multiple or conflated 'otherness': a multiplicity of cultural anxieties.

Abstract:
A 2D numerical modeling of flows in the swash zone is proposed using a Volume-Of- Fluid code. The detailed flow structure of a bore-driven swash event over an impermeable beach is first studied. The numerical model is then developed to account for porous media flow within the beach. The unique VARANS momentum equation and 1-fluid method used allow to solve simultaneously both surface and subsurface flows of air and water phases in the swash zone. This model is validated against a series of analytical tests cases and confronted to recent experimental measurements. The numerical results highlight the ability of the VOF-VARANS model to reproduce swash flows over and within a permeable beach

Full text
Abstract:
1992 marked a turning point in Nigeria’s broadcasting history as the country formally deregulated her broadcast space. However, it was not until March 2002 that the first commercial radio station was established in Rivers State, a broadcast environment hitherto monopolised by Radio Rivers. The coming of the first independent radio station in Rivers State in March 2002 was followed by the establishment of two other stations in October 2003 and November 2003 respectively. As important as these events in broadcasting in Rivers State are, however, media scholars have argued that in most societies where such change has taken place, public service broadcasters have tampered with their values of being an open space where individuals and groups can come together to be educated, informed, and entertained. This study investigates the extent to which the proliferation of commercial broadcasting outlets has affected Radio Rivers’ public service programming and scheduling. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, through in-depth interviews and analysis of the mandate and programme schedules, the study established that while Radio Rivers still maintains some public service values, its current programming policy is driven by the need to compete with the commercial broadcasters. This is evidenced in the decrease in the programme space allocated to current affairs and educational programmes on the schedule, (the genre of public service broadcasting), and the increase in attention to advertisements and entertainment programmes, (the genre of commercial broadcasting). The study also confirms the adverse effects of dwindling financial resources as forcing public service radios to compromise on their public service values, as majority of programmes on Radio Rivers current programme schedules are now geared towards attracting advertisers rather than serving the public good and interests. However, the study proved that it is not in all cases that the entry of commercial broadcasters into Rivers State broadcast space has undermined Radio Rivers public service values. Indeed, in leading to the expansion of interactive, news, and the diversification of entertainment programmes spaces on Radio Rivers’ programming schedules, the proliferation of commercial broadcasters has yielded some positive effects on Radio Rivers public service values and contribution to the public sphere. The study further highlights the need for some policy reforms at Radio Rivers, such as the introduction of licence fees, increased government funding and loosening government’s current control over the station. In addition, there is the need for the edict establishing the station to be amended to reflect the current trends in broadcasting in Rivers State, and above all to reposition Radio Rivers to sustain public good and public interests in its programming.

Full text
Abstract:
Field measurements, empirical studies and numerical approaches had been led in order to explain bedrock river incision due to transport of sediments. However, the studied system is roughly fluctuating, what make difficult to establish general laws. The thesis is based on the analysis of data extracted from a numerical code that simulate the motion of sediment by a turbulent flow. The interactions between the sediments and the fluid and the contact between sediments are modeled on physical basis and integrated following the principles of mechanics. The numerical process has been validated by comparison between two parameters extracted from natural rivers and experimental setup. The critical Shields number for sediment transport and the relationship between flow velocity and flux of sediments has been compared to values taken from literature. The work of dissipative forces between sediments and bedrock is computed. We propose a quantification of vertical incision rate based on rock resistance parameters. We have established a relationship between incision rate and Shields number that fit with a power law. We reproduce the two antagonistic effects that rules incision process: tool-effect and cover-effect. We predict the existence of a critical Shields number for incision that is higher than sediment transport threshold. We quantify the lateral incision rate with the work of dissipative forces between channel benches and sediments. We also quantify the attrition rate of the sediments with the value of energy dissipated within the sediment cover. The power balance of the sub-system sediment cover gives basis that lead to a scenario for bedrock river channel growth. Other results about influence of bedrock roughness, coefficient of restitution and surface gravity on incision rate are exposed

Time is the most loyal spectator as well as the most detailed and reliable recorder. Each thrilling picture in the life process flashes in the river of time. However, our lives are limited comparing to the long stream of time. I would like to try my best to understand and explore each and every individual through my creation, and explore how we can create unlimited value at time limitations. My creation expresses mainly the change of time by ink-painting, thereby demonstrating the beauty of time flowing. In order to make the creation deeper and obtain the spirit of experimentation, first I imitated the concepts oriental ink painter, and did analysis of cross righteousness. Therefore, it came to the formation of my creativeconcept. In terms of my creation skill, I took use of the rollers to roll out the trace of time as well as the abstract flow lines to express the idea of time. Through the experimental ink, the works generates new images and new mood. As for the art forms of the creation, I built an image that feels with the times, based on the existing techniques ,materials research, image interpretation and ink actual situation, there by practicing the creation goal of the time flow. My creation content is divided into three series, the trace series, the change series, and the symbiosis series. In the trace series, the works show traces of time in the nature. The traces are not only the score of the time, but also the best witness of the life. Because art does not just keep the appearance and the scenery, it records every scale works use composite pigment to produce the complete process of the composite. The flowing paint and ink condense into a flowing sense of time. This records the change of the river of time. In the symbiosis series, the time passage never stops, and it comes along with the change of endless life. In this series, I hope to present the mood and the changes of time through my creation to highlight the ploy of time and life.

The migration of polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs)is not driven by the gradient of concentration, but by that of activity. Only by gaining each activity in the environmental phase can we identify the principal exposure pathways. Current researchers estimate PCBs’ fugacity by making use of the conception of the empirical partition coefficient. However, the estimates remain doubtful. The thesis aims to accurately measure the PCBs’ activity in sediment and fish in Er-Jen River with solid phase microextraction (SPME)method. The research result reveals that the source of PCBs in Er-Jen River is the contaminated sediment. They were released to the water body. Through the equilibration between gills and water body, and food from lower trophic level than themselves, fish accumulate PCBs. The total activity of each fish species does not necessarily increase with the increase of trophic level. Liza macrolepis which feeds on organic matters has the highest level, which amounts to 0.16 mg/L-PDMS, and megalops cyprinids which feeds on shrimps and small fishes have the lowest activity, which is 0.01 mg/L-PDMS. Obviously, the source of food accounts for the difference in activity. According to the feeding type, we can divide fish species into benthic feeders and pelagic feeders. The activity in pelagic feeders increases with the increase of trophic level. However, activity in benthic feeders has nothing to do with the trophic level. The result indicates that the difference was resulted from the duration of staying in the estuarine regions. Both logBCFL and logKom increase linearly with logKow. However, they are higher than those reported in the literatures. These discrepancies might be resulted form overestimating the concentration in nature water and mistaking PCBs adsorbed in colloidal matters as in aqueous phase. Previous researchers might have underestimated logBCFL and logKom. Due to the non-equilibrium among activities of fishes, sediment and water, we might underestimate the human risk adopting the activity in sediment. Cancer risk estimated by activity in fish equals that by sediment content. The cancer risks mentioned above are higher than the acceptable risk, 10-6. Fish, finally uptaken by human, may be hazard to local residents. Remediation of contaminated sediment in Er-Jen River should be considered.

Researches have shown high concentration of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediment and fish in Er-Jen River. The exposure pathways of PCBs are forward human bodies of concern. Infact, activity in each environmental phase governs PCBs’ migration directions. Understanding the activity of each compartment in the estuary, including sediment, water, and fish, is important for assessing the potential health risk residing near Er-Jen River. This study is aimed to establish a solid phase microextraction (SPME) method to measure the activities of PCBs in environmental media by using polydimethylsiloxan (PDMS) coated optical fibers. Partition coefficients of PDMS to water and organic matter to water (Kpw and Kom), and bioconcentration factor (BCFL) could be determined more accurately in this study with less artifacts and were compared with those from the literatures. Without the interference of adsorption on glass wall, logKpw obtained from this study shows a linear relationship with logKow (logKpw = 0.89logKow + 0.36, R2 = 0.92) even for PCBs with high chlorine number. The lower Kpw value from literatures might be due to neglecting the effect of glass wall’s adsorption. logKom increases linearly with logKow (logKom = 1.17logKow – 1.03, R2 = 0.86), however, is higher than the logKom reported in the literature. LogBCFL ranges from 5.88 to 8.53 and also has a linear relationship with logKow (logBCFL = 1.07logKow + 0.30, R2 = 0.77), while some literatures says logBCFL becomes nonlinear with logKow as logKow > 6 and even decreases as logKow > 7.5. These discrepancies might be resulted from overestimating the nature water’s concentration and underestimating BCFL, especially for substances with higher logKow values possibly, due to the nonseparable sorbing compartments in the aqueous phases. PCBs’ activities in fish, water, and surface sediment showed that they were about in equilibrium state. Pollutants were going from deeper sediment to surface layer sediment, fish, and finally uptaken by human. Estimated life time cancer risk of a resident in the estuary area is 3.4 10-6 and hazard quotient is 0.40.

A Study of Achievement of Learning By Using Media Assistance-An Example of The Children’s Concept of River Processes Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence on the elementary school students’ learning effectiveness when teachers employ the media-assisted instructions. The example used here is a media about the river processes which is based on a lesson unit in the natural science subject in the third grade. The movie describes not only the actual scenes in the upper, middle and lower section of the river in Taipei area but also the experimental modeling of river processes. The motion picture also shows the simulation of erosion, transportation and deposition of river processes. The samples coming from the third grade students include 3 classes in the experimental group and 3 classes in the control group respectively. They are separated in a two-week experimental instruction. Both groups were given the achievement test organized by the researcher to evaluate the learning result. Besides, the researcher used the media assisted instruction attitude questionnaire to evaluate the experimental group only. Having done that, the researcher interviewed some students individually. The result shows that the test score of the experimental group is higher than that of the control group, and the difference has reached a significant level. Compared to the learning achievement of the students in both groups, it shows that the test score for students with higher learning achievement in the experimental group is higher than that of the control group, but it has no significant differences. In both groups of students with low learning achievement, the score of the experimental group is obviously higher than that of the control group. In addition, from the result of media-instructed attitude survey, experimental students are satisfied with the media-assisted instruction, and most of them hope that they could be taught in this way. From the individual interview, some problems were found in the children’s learning. The results of this study provide useful information for media instruction.

Water is the root of life and waters is the cradle of culture. Nowadays the ancient waters of Kaohsiung has been affirmed from the locals and becoming the main target of travel marketing. Let people recognize the culture value of waters. As the renovation of the waterfront space, the network media has been brought new look. The content is whether deep concern, the creation tried to combine the new and old media, broadcast media and blog. The form of combination passed down the ancient cultural intension like the network media continued the content of the traditional media and provide the reading and listening situation which broke through the time and space limit. The creation will be combined the new network media of blog and original form of broadcast media, showing the new idea of the creative content. Based on the above observation of background status of the environment, the following is the objectives of the creation: 1.Explore the relationship between city and water, and use the new media (Internet) and old media (broadcasting) of integration development to let more people hear the sound of water flowing in Kaohsiung City. 2.Based on the perspective of caring Kaohsiung, reporting the water-related attractions in Kaohsiung with guiding from the local topic characters to raise awareness of the audience to know the environmental culture and further to speculate the value of life. 3.Use the characters of the broadcast media with the field radio to lead the audience into the hearing imagination. Through interviews with local people in art, shaping water Kaohsiung in the different points of view. 4.Use the network media to extend the life of radio programs. Through the blog creative platform to transform radio program into the form of random listening to broke through the time limit of the traditional media. The public can broke the limit of the space-time and place to know the city of water in Kaohsiung and relationship of the humanistic development by using the deterritorialized network media. Through the public performance, finding the following conclusions: 1.The creation “Hear the Water City of Kaohsiung” can be impressed audience to link the “water” with Kaohsiung and let them know further about the city of water of culture and waterfront environment in Kaohsiung. 2.Used the way of the field radio, “Hear the Water City of Kaohsiung” allowed the audience to have the feeling of virtually being there and promoted the willing of visitation. 3.The random of network program can make up to the disadvantages of the listening way of the traditional radio programs. However, the audience doesn’t necessarily accept. 4.The radio programs will also be placed on the internet not to attract more audience to listen to the programs. 5.Blog is the self-expression. Although blog can not be able to threaten the traditional media, it still affected the demarcation between “profession” and “interest”. 6.If the traditional programs wanted to combined with internet, it should be strengthened the interactive design and post-production the program essences to accommodate the listening habit with short attention from the internet users.

The development of industry not only brings economic benefit, but also accompanies with environmental pollution issues, such as the emission of industrial waste effluents. Recently, the multiple media pathway has been widely used in health risk assessment, and it can estimate the distribution of chemical substances in food chain by alternative scenarios with different parameters. Hence, the purpose of this study is to establish a multiple media pathway for wastewater effluents in Tainan Yenshui River, and analysis the uncertainties of health risk assessment. In this study, environmental and biological samples are analyzed to find the degree of pollution in Yenshui River. MODFLOW and MT3DMS models are used to predict the metal distribution in groundwater after long-term pollution. Multiple media pathway is established follow by human health risk assessment protocol (HHRAP), which is published by US EPA. According to the simulation and assessment results, non-carcinogenic risk in different scenarios are lower than the threshold for health hazard effects. While simulation scenario refers to local irrigation water composition, the highest contribution metals of hazard index (HI) are mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb), and the dose of Hg and Pb are mainly caused by river. The sensitivity results indicate that the intake of plants is the key parameter to affect the risk assessment results, follows by metal concentration of river or groundwater. Thus, local residents should reduce the use of river water to decrease the metal exposure.

This study was a meta-analysis using the data of ecological survey for Tanshui river, which was collected from October 2011 to June 2012. The data range included 45 sampling sites, each data point comprised physicochemical factors of sampling site, species composition and abundance of macroinvertebrate and fish. According to river pollution index (RPI) evaluated by EPA Taiwan, the most serious polluted waters located at the flow track length at 15-35 Km relative to river mouth as zero point, lower pollution level of upstream and downstream area was due to the dilution effect. The result of canonical correlation analysis (CCA) indicate that macroinvertebrate and fish community structure correlated with physicochemical factors significantly, the most important environmental factor was dissolved oxygen, higher dissolved oxygen indicate higher biodiversity, higher ammonia nitrogen and BOD content indicate serious pollution with lower biodiversity , only limit pollution tolerant species can live in contaminated waters. Biological community structure is well correlated with environmental gradient, and good to be used as biological index. The Family-level Biotic Index (FBI) drive from macroinvertebrate community, Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) drive from fish community and Abundance Order Weighted Index (AOWI) drive from both biological community can represent the degree of pollution of river accurately. Spatial and temporal distribution of the biological index with similar trend of RPI and well correlated with each other. The water quality of Tanshui River evaluated by biological index in 2012 indicated that slight pollution of upstream area, medial pollution located at area of flow track length between 15-35 km, and downstream estuary affected by tidal movement was slight or medial pollution.

Silva, Cláudia Cristina da. "Expanding participation in locative media with latinos in Austin, Texas." Doctoral thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/18914.

Full text
Abstract:
Throughout the last decade, mobile and location-based media has been an emerging subject in a growing and interdisciplinary body of research: ubiquitous computing, pervasive computing, urban studies and media studies, and the fusion of the last two: media geography. Until now, studies of locative media have predominantly focused on the experiences of high-end and techy-savvy users. Companies and designers continue to design applications for those who are already familiar with the online world and have the right skills to take fully advantage of GPS-enabled phones. This dissertation shifts this focus to investigate participation in the general use of locative media and, specifically, in the production of locative storytelling by focusing on Latino, low-income and low-end smartphone users. Access to mobile technologies is no longer an issue for this group, as they are heavy users of smartphones. In fact, Latinos/as have been considered the audience of the future in regards to digital media in the United States. Furthemore, Latinos/as are leading the trend in mobile ownership, adopting smartphones at a higher rate than any other demographic group. Despite all this evidence, research about Latinos and locative media is scarce. Within this context, this dissertation addresses the broad question of “how locative media may foster awareness about local history, of unknown or forgotten information, and social events among and about Latinos/as in a place that faces historical spatial segregation.” The goal behind this approach was to investigate how the Latino community that is concentrated in a specific geographical area of Austin is represented spatially to the outside as in Austin, Texas. Hence, this work envisaged bringing outsiders into the reality of Latinos/as living in a historically segregated area mainly to create awareness about the legacy of segregation in Austin. In order to test this approach, two groups of users were selected to practice and reflect on locative media in relation to Latino/as segregated community. The group corresponding to among Latinos (insiders) are resident immigrant Latino parents in Dove Springs – a neighborhood in Southeast Austin. Specifically, this group consists of participants of the digital inclusion program TechComunidad provided by the nonprofit River City Youth Foundation (RCYF) in 2013. The group corresponding to the about Latinos (outsiders) are undergraduate students of “Mapping Latino Culture in East Austin” course, offered by the Radio, Television and Film department at The University of Texas at Austin. A pilot study was conducted with Latinas girls through the non-profit Latinitas. The pilot study generated results and lessons that enriched the research, contributing to reframing this work and also to the body of literature about locative media and storytelling. In regards to participation, it was found that the problem is not smartphone ownership, which had been an issue for earlier locative media projects, but an awareness of their locative capabilities, how to use them, how to gain skills to create content with them, and how to make software easy to use. The findings of this study suggest that there should be more investment in the production of locative content/information, which increases the understanding users have of their locality and enhances their knowledge of the place they live. One recommendation for future empirical research with these communities is to invest in introductory classes on local history and also in fieldtrips in order to increase local knowledge. However, it seems like a romantic idea to think that people will use locative applications solely to learn about the place where they live. In this sense, the findings of this work suggest that locative storytelling applications need to be woven into everyday needs, being integrated into people’s everyday activities, in order to increase their sense of place and belonging.
Essa área geográfica, a qual me refiro, é historicamente segregada.
