Abstract:
It is widely held that we can obtain beliefs and withhold believing propositions directly by performing an act of will. This thesis is sometimes identified with the view that believing is a basic act, an act which is under our direct control. Descartes holds that the will is limitless in relation to belief acquisition and that we must be directly responsible for our beliefs, especially our false beliefs, for otherwise we could draw the blasphemous conclusion that God is responsible for them. For Descartes and his followers judgment and assent are acts of the will which may be made both when they ought and when they ought not to be made. They are expressions of freedom of the will and as such we are directly responsible for the beliefs we acquire. Other philosophers who seem to espouse volitionalism include Aquinas, Locke, Kierkegaard, Newman, James, Pieper, Chisholm and Meiland.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTBackground:Previous research shows that museum programs can be beneficial for the quality of life of people with dementia. This study evaluated the implementation of “Unforgettable,” an interactive museum program for people with dementia and their caregivers in the Netherlands, and investigated the impact of the program's implementation on the museums as an organization and on the attitudes toward dementia of the museum staff.Method:Semi-structured interviews were held with 23 stakeholders to identify facilitators and barriers to the implementation of the Unforgettable program in 12 Dutch museums. Based on the model of Meiland et al. (2004), an overview is made of factors influencing the different levels and phases of the implementation process. The impact of Unforgettable on the attitudes of the museum staff was assessed using the Approaches to Dementia Questionnaire (n = 176).Results:The training in the Unforgettable method, regular evaluation with the program guides and hosts, and cooperation with other organizations appeared essential for successful implementation of Unforgettable. A lack of promotional activities was an impeding factor. Compared to before the implementation, the museum employees’ attitudes toward people with dementia became more positive. Conclusion:Both successful dissemination of the Unforgettable program and the more positive attitudes toward dementia of employees in museums implementing this program can contribute to the social participation of people with dementia and thereby to their quality of life.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTBackground:In this review, we study the effects of dyadic psychosocial interventions focused on community-dwelling people with dementia and their family caregivers, and the relationship of the effects with intervention components of programs. Methods:A search from January 2005 to January 2012 led to 613 hits, which we reviewed against our inclusion criteria. We added studies from 1992 to 2005 reviewed by Smits et al. (Smits, C. H. M., De Lange, J., Droes, R.-M., Meiland, F., Vernooij-Dassen, M. and Pot, A. M. (2007). Effects of combined intervention programs for people with dementia living at home and their caregivers: a systematic review. International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, 22, 1181–1193). We assessed the methodological quality of 41 programs with the Cochrane criteria and two items of the Oxford Centre of Evidence-based Medicine guidelines. Results:Studies of moderate to high quality concerning 20 different dyadic psychosocial programs for people with dementia and caregivers were included. Nineteen of these programs show significant effects on the patient with dementia, the caregiver, or both. Due to differences in the programs and the studies, this study does not provide an unequivocal answer about which programs are most effective. Programs with intervention components that actively train one or more specific functional domains for the person with dementia and/or the caregiver seem to have a beneficial impact on that domain, although there are exceptions. Reasons can be found in the program itself, the implementation of the program, and the study design. Conclusions:Dyadic psychosocial programs are effective, but the outcomes for the person with dementia and the caregiver vary. More attention is needed for matching the targeted functional domains, intervention components, and delivery characteristics of a program with the needs of the person with dementia and the family caregiver.

Abstract:
Rose (Rosa) cultivars from two breeders, Meilland Star and W. Kordes Söhne, were planted in field beds at Verona, Mississippi, to evaluate cut flower production potential. Seventeen cultivars of an outdoor cut flower series of roses from W. Kordes Söhne and nine cultivars of the Romantica series from Meilland Star were planted in adjacent field beds. The number of stems produced per plant and stem length were measured to assess the field production potential of cut flower stems in Mississippi. Based on 2 years of assessment, the best performing W. Kordes Söhne roses were ‘Fantasia Mondiale’, ‘Masquerade’, and ‘Pinguin’, averaging three to 12 stems/plant per month that were at least 30 cm long, and the best Meilland Star cultivars for outdoor cut flower production were ‘Frederic Mistral’, ‘Michelangelo’, ‘The McCartney Rose’, and ‘Traviata’, averaging three to 20 stems/plant per month that were at least 30 cm long. These cultivars performed well during the heat of the Mississippi summer.

Meiliang Lake is located at north of Tai lake, it is one of the most important part of Tai Lake. Water quality of Meiliang Lake is being worse because the TP, TN and COD is released from the bottom sediment. So th goverment is decided to dredg the bottom sediment to improve the water quality. This paper used WASP5 numerical model to simulate the water quality of Meiliang Lake before and after the sediment dredging. The results show that sediment dredging is useful for improving the water quality of Meiliang Lake.

Vazif Meilanov (b. 1938), a mathematician and author of the samizdat book In the Margins of Soviet Newspapers, was arrested in January 1980 for demonstrating in defence of the exiled physicist Andrei Sakharov. Meilanov was sentenced to 7 years in a ‘strict regime’ camp and 2 years in exile for ‘anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda'; a further conviction while he was in camp added an extra 6 months to his sentence. Glasnost and Sakharov's release notwithstanding, Meilanov is still serving his term of exile in the remote settlement of Namtsi in the Verkhnevilusky region of Yakutia, Siberia. It was there, in the local library, that he attended a bizarre public discussion on Children of the Arbat by Anatoly Rybakov (see preceding article: Glasnost bestseller), Meilanov's lively account of this discussion, published here in an abridged version, first appeared in Russian in the Paris newspaper Russkaya Mysl.

Abstract:

Fang, Yiman. "Relationships between surface pollen and vegetation in the Meiling Mountains, southeast China : an aid to reconstruct past vegetation dynamics." Thesis, University of Hull, 2018. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:17103.

Full text
Abstract:
Understanding the relationships between modern pollen deposits and their surrounding vegetation is an important tool to improve the quality of reconstructions and interpretations of past vegetation changes from fossil pollen records. The overall aim of this research project is to validate and calibrate mathematical models of relationships for assemblages deposited in peatland and forest landscapes in southeast China, which will form an essential basis for quantitative reconstruction of past land cover from Quaternary peat deposits in the region. This field study area presents great challenges, being spatially large in extent compared to studies in northwestern Europe and of difficult and inaccessible mountainous terrain, which makes the vegetation survey (10m-100m) time-consuming. Firstly, a study to decide whether to use moss or soil surface samples is presented. 42 paired moss and soils sample were collected in the five main forest types. Similar levels of variation in the pollen spectra are seen, but there are systematic differences in the mean values of key groups of taxa. Moss polsters are chosen since they record the most accurate representation of the contemporary vegetation. Secondly, the behaviour of several pollen dispersal and deposition models is tested against a grassland-forest transect. The Prentice-Sugita model passed the test and is therefore considered suitable for use. Thirdly, the first estimates of relative pollen productivity (RPP) for 9 key taxa (Castanea, Cryptomeria, Cyclobalanopsis, Liquidambar, Pinus, Poaceae, Quercus, Rosaceae and Theaceae) are presented. Two alternative methods (modified Davis method and iteration method) for estimating RPP are also developed, which have great potential for use in wider areas. Fourthly, wetland herb taxa are important in the pollen spectra from mire records, therefore surface samples were taken from a mire surface. They show that there are inter-annual differences in pollen from wetland herbs. Finally, the discussion presents suggestions for how these findings can be best applied to land-cover reconstruction, explores the strengths and limitations of the study and identifies future directions which such work could take.

Abstract The pebble layer which is used to search into the fluvial sediment is regarded as an important index of the process of the rivers in ancient periods. How much the energy of a river is can be inferred from the lengths of the diameters of the pebbles are. Research has shown that the energy of a river could be influenced by some causes, such as the change of the sea level, the climate and the structural process, or by extreme weather events. However, we need to research deep to differentiate the causes how they formed. The research is aimed at investigating the possible causes of the boulder sediment in Chi-Sing Tan, Meilun Tableland. The researcher has recorded the information about the diameters of the boulders, the types of stones, and the terrain. And the information above is used to investigate the causes of the boulder deposition in the area. The research area is divided into four sections: Chi-Sing Tan, Chi-Lie-Bi, Meilun-Bi, and Environmental Protection Park. 1,450 boulders have been measured the diameters. In Chi-Sing Tan, there are 250 boulders being measured and recorded. There are 206 boulders over 200 centimeters long in diameter. The average diameter is 158 centimeters long. And the longest one is up to 640 centimeters. The stone analysis shows that most of the stones belong to metamorphic rocks. And the distribution of the boulders is quite the same as the ancient Meilun River Basin. Therefore, the researcher reasonably inferred that these boulders came from Pre-Tertiary Metamorphic basement, the East incline of the Central Mountain Range and by way of the movement and the deposition of Meilun River. According to the Radiometric Dating, the core sediments, and the geologic map of Meilun Tableland, the sediment event happened at about 12-9Ka, the period between Pleistocene epoch Ice Age and Interglacial Stage. However, if we consider from the weather viewpoint, we could get another point. Because the climate environment of this period changed from cold and dry to warm and humid, both the probability of having extreme weather events increased. Flood moved and carried boulders to the lower reaches of the river. That could explain that the energy of the river was the main cause of the boulder sediment. The average diameters of most of the boulders are more than 92.8 centimeters long. Besides, the percentage of the amount of the boulders whose diameters are over 200 centimeters long is high up to 82.4 %. The extreme natural weather events which may be called Big Flood were quite similar to the mudflows and landslides nowadays. Also the scale of the Big Flood events may be even larger than those. So, being inspired by the information of the Radiometric Dating on the coral reef, the researcher came to the conclusion that the extreme scale of the Big Flood events which happened during Interglacial Stage may be the main factor that caused the sediment of the boulders in the researching area. Furthermore, boulders may be brought by the tsunami which happened on the eastern side of the Pacific Ocean since few boulders are observed in the western Meilun Tableland. Some documents show that the tsunamis that occurred because of the volcano in the Kuei-Shan Tao, an island which located in Ryukyu arc region might be another factor.
