Rörelsen blir alltså lätt vad man kallar kaotisk.

Full textAnalytical mechanics is an alternative to Classical (Newtonian) mechanics for calculating the movement of particles and systems of particles. In this paper we analyze three different mechanical systems using analytical mechanics. We then implement this into the maple based software "Sophia" to further analyze how changing some of the parameters alter the behavior of the system. One of our main focuses in the report is studying the stability of an inverted pendulum. In 1951 the Russian physicist Pyotr Kapitza, figured out that the pendulum could be stabilized in the upside-down position by forcing it into a rapid vertical oscillation. We examine the boundaries of this stability and explore if the pendulum can instead be stabilized using an elliptical oscillation

Full textIn this paper the conceptual coherence and towards physics among students in thephysics and science program at Polhemskolan in Lund were measured and compared. The conceptual coherence was measured with the Force Concept Inventory, a muchdebated multiple choice test from USA that is supposed to measure students’ conceptualcoherence for the concept of force in classical mechanics. Since many studies show thatthe interest in physics is declining the students’ attitude towards physics was alsomeasured with an attitude test of Likert model. The study is done among students that just started year one and older students that havehad instruction in physics at the Swedish correspondence to high school. The result ofthe study is that the students at the physics program have a higher conceptual coherencefor the concept of force than the students at the science program and that the coherence4is improved with the physics course Fysik A. The attitude towards physics is morepositive at the physics program but the attitudes among the students at the scienceprogram are more widely scattered. The conclusion is that the physics program atPolhemskolan has succeeded in attracting the students it is meant for.

Full textAs a part of a manufacturing process to produce a kind of steel strip there is a need to guide two strips of steel to the correct position on a revolving drum. It is imperative for the following step in the process that the positioning of the strips are precise. The guidance of the steel strips is currently done by hand. The mechanical replacement for the guidance is supposed to operate unattended once the winding process has begun. The aim is that one operator, instead of two as it is done today, will set up the whole machine including the mechanical replacement and then let the winding of the drum be uninterrupted until it is finished. It is important that the winding goes without interruption to reduce the risk of injuries as well as increase productivity. During the thesis work a thorough pre-study was done, mainly by communicating with the operators of the winding machine since there was almost no available literature. The pre-study led to a complete specification of the mechanical replacement as well as a few ideas for concepts. Since several of the concepts were dependent on one another, a chain of concept selections were performed to get the best complete concept possible. The complete concept provided the foundation for the layout construction created in Computer Aided Design (CAD). The new construction is mounted so that it can move in the horizontal plane in order to fulfill the requirements of the production. The guidance is made possible using three separate wheels that are adjustable in two directions. The adjustments to the wheels are made possible by the use of electrically controlled cross sliding tables, that also improve ergonomics for the operator. The most important of the wheels is the 'groove' wheel. The main function of the groove wheel is to guide the underside of both strips to the correct position on the drum, it is placed in the groove of the drum hence the name groove wheel. The final construction meet all the demands from the initial specification and about half of the optional requirements. Further development of the construction require the FEM analysis to be confirmed and it would also be preferable to produce some sort of prototype to prove the concept of the groove wheel. The prototype is highly important since the groove wheel has a vital role in the product.

Full textSaab Dynamics is implementing the methodology project MBD ILS & Systemssäkerhet. The project has the purpose of creating the optimum conditions required for Concurrent Engineering (CE). CE generally concerns the early involvement of all necessary functions during the product development process, which makes it possible to include the lifecycle perspective at a larger extent. CE is comparable to, the more common approach, integrated product development. The bachelor thesis was a part of the methodology project to analyse the exchange of information, which is a fundamental prerequisite for CE, between the disciplines Mechanics and ILS (Integrated Logistic Support). The analysis was characterized as a qualitative analysis. Interviews were carried out with the employees at Saab Dynamics to emphasize their opinions and point of view of the current information exchange. The data were collected and analysed relative CE to describe a representation of the current information exchange and the needs for improvement. The detected information exchange were considered to be lacking in compassion to CE. The employees experienced an absence of descriptions and guidelines for the information exchange in the interface between Mechanics and ILS. The need for improvements are concerning the need of feedback, accountability and insight in the other disciplines work, which are factors with great influence on the success of CE. For further studies, an interesting aspect would be to investigate different types and sizes of projects to be able to see how the information exchange varies. Also, interviews with project managers would add a broader perspective of the current information exchange and work flow.

Full textThis work is a project aimed at developing a solution to a problem with loose chains in one of Komatsu Forest's forestry machines. The task was to construct an automatic chain tensioner that would tighten the loose chains when needed. Requirements and goals were set for the project. Limitations were established and then a theory was developed for the problem. Based on the theory, a method could be developed to address and solve the problem the best way possible. The project was followed through and the result was four solutions to the problem. The different solutions addressed the problem in different ways but would theoretically solve the problem based on the given theory and limitations. However, one of the solutions was chosen as the best and for that solution, a production base was also taken. If the result were to be continued and a physical prototype would be manufactured, then it could possibly solve the problem of the decaying chains.

Full textHandling and replacement of cylindrical surface treatment brushes for rolled sheet metal is currently done by hand at the company voestalpine Precision Strip AB in Munkfors. The workis described as time consuming, non-ergonomic and with some risk of personal injuries. The surface treatment brushes that are handled are sensitive to both forces and dirt on their outer jacket area and therefore require caution when handling. To improve the ergonomic circumstances and minimize the risk of personal injury while ensuring the handling of thebrush, the company has requested a lifting tool. The goal of the project is to develop a travers emounted lifting tool that can lift the brush directly from the delivery pallet and mount in the intended machine without risking the quality of the brush or exposing personnel to risks. The tool is designed to be CE-labeled after manufacturing. To get a clear picture of today's working methodology and to define problem areas for a brush change, a preliminary study is conducted. The result of this study, together with the wishes of the company, is summarized into a requirement specification that becomes a direct starting point for continued development of the design. The concepts and ideas that are developed are evaluated and presented to the project organization. Some of the solutions are considered to have potential for further development and are kept for further development. It should be mentioned that the further development of the lifting tool until its final construction is aproduct of partly my own solutions, and partly the viewpoints, ideas and aspects from other members of the project organization. The final construction of the traverse lifting tool meets the requirements formulated in the specification and is considered safe and easy to handle and with good chances of being CEmarked. The tool can lift the brushes from the delivery pallet, rotate and mount in and out of the machine without grabbing the outer casing area or otherwise risking the brush's functionality. The tool also completely eliminates the non-ergonomic movements that arise as a result of the manual handling of the brushes that occur today. It is noted that the final lifting tool has potential for improvement, thus it ́s provided suggestions for continued work and further development of the product.

Full textSaab Aerosystems has a long tradition and a lot of competence in the field of flight simulation. Their ambition to broaden the market horizon has led to a discussion about also selling vehicle simulation solutions, both for military and civilian use.
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the driver’s experiences of the accelerations he or she is exposed to whilst driving in rough terrain. The results may be used as a basis for future decisions and can act as a platform for the construction of an effective simulation model.
To investigate the driver’s exposure of acceleration, some kind of dynamic simulation is needed. A terrain track with both small and large obstacles where constructed. A model of a military vehicle and a civil truck where also constructed with consideration given to the original vehicles’ features. The simulation of the ride along the track was then initiated, which resulted in plots for several parameters, such as acceleration and angular acceleration for the driver relative to the track. The work was focused on the vital properties of the vehicle, such as vehicle length, position of mass centre and wheel size.
The simulations led to some conclusions concerning vehicle properties. Boogie type suspension and lever arm type suspension, vertical distance to mass centre, driver’s position, vehicle length, spring and damper for the cab and number of wheels all turned out to be vital constituents to the driver’s experience. On the other hand, properties such as coefficient of restitution and wheel size turned out to have no significant impact.
One more conclusion of the work is that CAD software works well for dynamic simulations such as the ones described in this report. It was also apparent that a quite realistic simulation could be achieved with a fairly simple vehicle model. Furthermore, it is essential to get certain parameters such as the vehicle’s length and other major construction differences realistic, otherwise all fine tuning of the vehicle model will be pointless.

Full textIn vehicles with electric transmission and independent wheel stations, it is possible to have a possibility to control propulsion, steering and suspension individually for each wheel. This makes it possible to improve mobility, performance and driving safety. The long term goal of this work is to develop a methodt hat can evaluate and improve the mobility of such vehicles in terrain. This contribution concerns how a six wheeled electric transmission vehicle should be modelled to enable evaluation of the dynamic behaviour in different type of terrain. This is made by combining modelling of vehicle, transmission and tire-terrain behaviour.
For wheeled vehicles an electric transmission with hub motors provides the ability to accurately control the torque on every wheel independently, giving a great ability to improve both mobility in terrain and vehicle behaviour on road. In this work the components of a diesel-electric powertrain for off-road vehicles are modelled and a control layout with the possibility to include functions for improved performance both while driving off- and on-road is proposed.
To handle driving on soft ground, a tire/terrain model is needed. The model should include lateral deformation in order to be able to steer. A tire/terrain model is derived based on the ideas of Wong and Reece. The terrain characteristics are chosen to be described by parameters according to the Bekker model, since this data are widely available in literature.
The developed tire/terrain model has been implemented together with a vehicle model. This terrain vehicle model is shown to be able to estimate sinkage, rolling resistance, traction force and steering characteristics, of a six wheeledterrain vehicle using electric transmission.
To conclude, models of a six-wheeled vehicle with electric transmission and tire models both for soft and rigid ground have been developed. These models form a simulation platform, which makes it possible to evaluate control strategies for the electric transmission with the purpose to improve mobility.

Full textTHIS THESIS EXPLORES novel CAD modeling methods for design reuse and tomation realization. It will be demonstrated that by applying the described methods, CAD models can be utilized as framework integrators in order to generate geometric input for various engineering analysis tools. Multidisciplinary design can as a result be facilitated in early design due to decreased manual model re-definitions. Furthermore, due to the complex dependency between analysis tools, certain product characteristics can only be evaluated by applying a holistic design approach. Therefore, by applying multidisciplinary design, the level of knowledge about the product will increase.
To simulate and evaluate the properties and behavior of an engineering product during design, the geometry has to be constantly re-estimated. CAD tools can be employed to produce the requested geometry. However simplifications introduced in the geometry, due to incomplete and imprecise knowledge available in early design, result in inaccurate geometries. Thus re-modeling has to occur in a frequent rate in order to achieve sufficiently accurate models. Hence CAD tool are traditionally applied in later stages of design when the geometry of the product is more or less defined and CAD is applied to generate drafting and technical drawings for manufacturing purposes
It is therefore proposed that geometries for repetitive components are stored in so called high level templates and instantiated in the CAD model parametrically. Upon instantiation, each instance can be modified parametrically. Given the fact that the instantiation process is automated, the deletion and replacement procedures are also automatic, enabling easier model modifications in the design process.
To estimate the gained advantage when applying the proposed methods, holistic design frameworks are implemented. The frameworks consist of a combination of various engineering tools which are integrated through a user interface. Given that an information flow between the design tools is implemented, many aspects of design is computed and optimized concurrently. Consequently in order to draw general conclusion concerning geometric modeling, two different design applications with dissimilar requirements are studied in this work, namely aircraft and industrial robots.

Full textIn a large part of the industrial accidents different kinds of forklifts are involved. Collision protection barriers are often used to prevent pedestrians from coming into direct contact with industrial vehicles. The Volvo Group Truck Operations facility in Skövde uses such collision protection barriers to separate pedestrians from industrial traffic. Volvo’s welded steel collision protection barriers are constructed in place, depending on need, and are fastened to the concrete floor with expander bolts. The barriers are, therefore, difficult to disassemble and reuse in other locations. Volvo has requested the development of a conceptual design of a reusable and repairable modular collision protection barrier. To ensure that the specifications for the product are fulfilled strength calculations are performed. In order to complete the work a literature survey is carried out where current collision protection barriers, fastening methods for concrete, methods of calculations, safety demands and a product developing process are examined. Interviews are conducted and on-site observations are made to identify the necessary specifications. Observations showed that in a collision the expander bolts often tear loose from the concrete floor due to the robustness of the current collision barriers. The specifications are used to generate concepts. The developed concepts are evaluated and evolved in an iterative process where the specifications are refined at each step. The result, a modular conceptual design with two different alternatives to fasten it to the concrete floor, is presented. The idea is that the conceptual design shall be sized to give way at the maximum load of the fastening alternative. Strength calculations, performed on the most critical components, shows that it is difficult to size the collision protection barrier to guarantee that the intended component breaks in a collision. A Failure Mode and Effects Analysis is conducted to identify any flaws in the conceptual design and suggestions to address the flaws are made. The conceptual design fulfils the specifications that are currently possible to evaluate. These specifications are that the design is modular, easy to disassemble, repair and reuse, easy to store and meets the safety demands. Further work with strength calculations and sizing of the collision protection barrier is required. To ensure that the specifications are fulfilled and that the collision protection barrier behaves as desired in a collision it is recommended that prototypes be manufactured and tested.
