Abstract When brain metastasis develops, the prognosis of cancer is dismal. Insights into the biology of the primary cancer and the brain metastasis are necessary to inform more effective and targeted treatments. To study the role of microRNAs in brain metastasis, we performed differential expression profiling of 12 primary tumors and their paired brain metastases using smRNAseq (the 12 primary tumors included three non-small cell carcinomas, three melanomas, three endometrial carcinomas, one breast carcinoma, one thyroid carcinoma and one renal-cell carcinoma).

The types of cell cannibalism (entosis) are described (Fig. 1 and 2), including heterocannibalism and homocannibalism (autocannibalism), in which neoplastic cells can undergo incomplete heterophagocytosis, complete heterophagocytosis, pseudocannibalism, degradation to granular bodies, transformation of benign neoplastic cells into malignant ones, reduction in clonogenic potential or the progression of malignancy of tumour cells. The author also suggests changes in the nomenclature of some epithelial neoplasms, (Fig. 3) including tumours originating from blood vessel and lymphatic endothelium (

The increasing number of living cutaneous melanoma patients and the increased risk of developing a second primary tumour incited us to analyse the clinical characteristics of cutaneous melanoma and define the frequency, site, and type of second primary cancers in cutaneous melanoma patients. Non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs) include basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). These neoplasms are highly diverse in their clinical presentation, as well as in their biological evolution. While the deregulation of the Hedgehog pathway is commonly observed in BCC, SCC and MCC are characterized by a strikingly elevated mutational and neoantigen burden. As result of our improved understanding of the biology of non-melanoma skin cancers, innovative treatment options including inhibitors of the Hedgehog pathway and immunotherapeutic agents have

Cannibalism of neutrophils by tumor cells has previously been reported in certain carcinomas, lymphoma and melanoma. Tumor cannibalism is believed to serve as a tumor-immune escape mechanism, associated with high-grade aggressive cancers with a significantly increased metastatic potential. This interesting phenomenon has not been previously documented in association with salivary gland tumors. We report, for the first time, striking neutrophil-tumor cell cannibalism associated with a high grade, aggressive and metastatic salivary duct carcinoma of the parotid gland highlighted within cytologic

Skin cancers are the most common types of cancer worldwide, and their incidence is increasing. Melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) are the three major types of skin cancer. Melanoma originates from melanocytes, whereas BCC and cSCC originate from epidermal keratinocytes and are therefore called keratinocyte carcinomas. Chronic exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is a common risk factor for skin cancers, but they differ with respect to oncogenic mutational profiles and alterations in cellular signaling pathways. cSCC is the most common metastat

ABSTRACT Among non-melanoma skin cancers, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma entails the highest morbidity and mortality, and yet there is little guidance on how to identify the subset of cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas that behave aggressively. The staging of non-melanoma skin cancers is meant to provide this guidance, by dividing patients into groups for which survival differs between groups, is similar within each group, and consistently decreases with each increasing stage group.
