A more rigorous nonlinear HW analysis is proposed in this dissertation, which yields more accurate estimates of the equilibrium melting temperatures for semicrystalline polymers. Abstract During the repeated melting and cooling of (initially) powder material in powder bed based additive manufacturing (AM), high temperatures and large temperature gradients arise. These lead to thermal expansion and contraction of the material, for both metals and polymers and to shrinkage during crystallization in the case of semi-crystalline polymers. The heterogeneous temperature field, temperature-dependent mechanical behavior, and heterogeneous crystallization result in warpage and residual stresses during powder bed fusion (PBF).

Polymer Matrix Composites (PMCs) have been the subject of many recent studies due to their outstanding characteristics. For the processing of PMCs, a wide range of elevated temperatures is typically applied to the material, leading to the development of internal residual stresses during the final cool-down step. These residual stresses may lead to net shape deformations or internal damage. Also, volumetric shrinkage, and thus additional residual stresses, could be created during crystallization of the semi-crystalline thermoplastic matrix. Abstract A numerical formulation of the energy equation is developed for the laminar flow of a MEPCM fluid in a tube at a constant velocity and subjected to a constant and uniform wall heat flux. MEPCM fluids are phase-change fluids that are suspensions comprised of particles of microencapsulated phase-change material (MEPCM) in a carrier fluid. The thermodynamic behavior of MEPCM fluids is modeled for both melting and crystallization and included in an enthalpy formulation of the energy exchanges. A particular phase-change case involving a microPCM fluid is then solved for conditions that pro

Abstract:
In this study, carbon/polyamide 6 staple fiber yarns were heated above the melting temperature of the polymer in a modified impregnation and calendaring process using two hot air blowers, stretched to align the fibers in the yarns, and formed into tapes. Tapes were produced at different process temperatures and the influences on the degree of consolidation and the thermal properties of the tapes were characterized. While improved impregnation quality can be achieved at higher temperatures, a decrease in the crystallization peak temperature of the impregnated tape was observed, indicating therm

In the transformation operations of polymeric materials, there is a complex interplay between transport phenomena and crystallization. In particular, the polymer in the molten state is a viscoelastic fluid with rheological parameters depending on temperature, pressure, crystallinity, and molecular stretch. The molecular stretch is a tensor variable with values determined by the history of the flow, temperature, and pressure fields. During polymer processing operations, several phenomena proceed simultaneously by interacting with each other. The combination and interplay of the models that desc
