Abstract:
"I daresay you haven’t had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast." Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There[21]. This thesis examines an artificial proto-culture of e-Puck robots to examine which factors affect the transmission of memes, in the form of sounds imitated back and forth between the robots, to determine which factors promote or inhibit meme diversity and spread. Meme theory posits that the development of cultural artifacts such as ideas, myths, religions, etc. arises naturally from cultural information transfer by imitation. It has been suggested that 'copybots’, robots programmed to imitate each other, would eventually lead to the emergence of something recognizable as culture[13]. This thesis describes part of a research project which sought to use e-Puck robots to implement a copybot based system to examine this proto-culture emergence. The group implemented an Artificial Culture lab for experiments using the e-Puck robots. Here the focus is on the imitation of sound patterns (the memes) within a group of e-Pucks to examine which factors promote or inhibit meme diversity and spread. Other parts of the research group examined the imitation of movement patterns, human perceptions (and preconceptions of robots), and abstract societal level modeling. Within is described a simulator and a series of experiments on the imitation of sounds using that simulator that examine the factors affecting meme transmission in homogeneous populations and evolving heterogeneous populations. These experiments show that they key factor in promoting meme diversity and spread is simply the frequency with which imitation occurs. They also show that memory size plays a smaller role and selection strategy (for choosing which meme to imitate) plays a lesser role still. Abstract:
Drawing upon the opportunity that the Internet and social media provides anyone with internet access to create, consume, publish and produce digital content, this study aims to examine one of the new means of communication. In today’s digital society creating content and communicating across boarders is easier than ever, but actually getting the point across is not – with an evergrowing number of posts, users and sites there is a struggle close the gap between posting a message and actually having it noticed. This study examines memes – normally seen as easily understood jokes – as means of accessible and simplistic communication by qualitatively examining fifteen feminist memes on Twitter. The study aims to see what the memes are conveying in means of social criticism and feminist orientations, their relation to the online feminist discourses and, lastly, explore the memes’ potential role in the political sphere. The theoretical framework firstly explains memes in relation to Henry Jenkins’ participatory culture, Lawrence Lessig’s remix culture and relates memes to the political sphere based on both Limor Shifman’s meme theory and the two theories mentioned above. Secondly, first-, second- and third-wave feminism is introduced along with radical feminism and the feminist concept of sisterhood. Lastly, the social constructivism sets the groundwork for the study’s choice of method; critical discourse analysis. The critical discourse analysis is used in a modified version along with the ‘verbal-visual unity’; a method designed to take the memes structure – the combination of text and images – into account. These methods are used to identify themes, connotations, modality, interdiscursivity, social criticism and the feminist orientation of the memes. The result reveals that there are four main points of social criticism emphasized in the memes; regarding body norms, regarding belittling of women’s opinions and actions, regarding patriarchal structures and regarding men in general. The main feminist orientation visible in more than half the memes is radical feminism, while second-wave feminism is visible in a third. Meanwhile, the memes’ relation to the feminist discourses varies; smaller discourses have low levels of interdiscoursivity, while the main discourse for online feminism show high levels. The study shows that memes’ – potential – roles in the political sphere are as means of spreading opinion, as ways of constituting new norms in a new reality, and as means of shifting the structures of power in society.

Mielczarek, Natalia. "Lives of iconic news images online: appropriations of 'big pictures' and their rhetorical work in digital participatory culture." Diss., University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6211.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the process of meaning transformation in digital participatory culture by examining the replication, mutation and circulation that iconic news images undergo in cyberspace through Internet memes. With triangulation of visual historical analysis, visual rhetorical analysis and iconographic tracking, the project argues that members of remix culture weaponize the digital derivatives of the famous images through manipulation to renegotiate history, dispense social justice in the absence of other recourse and engage in political activism. Such transformations, as this project shows, are likely to weaken the rhetorical powers of iconic images to define collective memory, a role they have played for decades. With the use of Internet memes, members of the public can now re-remember history outside the iconic accounts, producing their own interpretations of events that contribute to public discourse. Internet memes that exist alongside their iconic visual counterparts democratize the process of meaning making and remembering in remix culture, promoting polyvocality in favor of singular versions of the past. Such fragmentation of master narratives highlights the changing role of iconic pictures in the process of signification thanks to technology. Keywords: Iconic images, Internet memes, signification, digital participatory culture, collective memory.

Abstract:
This thesis uses the concept of the "zoeira", a particularly Brazilian form of humour, to undertake a cultural analysis of Brazilian internet memes and their role in contemporary culture. Through a close textual analysis of three memes, it details how memes represent specific aspects of Brazilian culture and how Brazilian meme culture relates to the broader popular culture of the internet. It concludes with findings about the social and cultural meanings of humour for Brazilian digital culture, showing that Brazilian memes work as tools for political protest and for building a shared cultural identity.

Drury, Caroline. "The Function of Internet Memes in Helping EMS Providers Cope with Stress and Burnout." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2019. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/499.

Abstract:
EMS personnel tend to face higher burnout rates than those in similar professions, which makes them more likely to make mistakes, engage in safety-compromising behaviors, and get injured. This project examines humor used in the form of Internet memes as a coping mechanism. Internet memes are modifiable, replicable units of cultural transmission that are passed and gain influence through the Internet. I applied the Maslach Burnout Inventory to EMS related memes on the website Reddit. I found that memes that dealt with burnout typically referenced non-traumatic factors as being the source of burnout, and that these memes would often lead to conversations that allowed EMS personnel to share their experiences with one another. I concluded that internet memes can provide a way for EMS personnel to express their feelings anonymously and through a façade of humor, and can also let other people who may be going through similar experiences know that they are not alone.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to understand the sociodiscursive constitution of a genre chain in the digital environment. The corpus consists of a clipping of the genre chain named \"Bela, Recatada e do Lar\", constituted by three nodes: the article \"Marcela Temer: Bela, Recatada e do Lar\", published by Veja Magazine in April 2016; the Memes campaign emerged as a response to the women\'s representation in the magazine; and tweets-response that evaluated the participation of men in the campaign. The theoretical basis for this research was the Critical Discourse Analysis by Fairclough (1989; 2010; 2011; 2013), in addition to dialogues with Bakhtin Circle concepts (1979, 2003) and theoretical reflections of Shifman (2013), Castells (2015), Saffioti (1987), Wolf (1992), Souza-Júnior (2011), Lévy (2000) and Elias (2014), regarding social, gender and Meme networks. In terms of the descriptive apparatus, each node of the chain required different categories of analysis: for reportage, the description was based on the Reference and Categorization (Koch, 2014) and the Transitivity (Halliday, 2004 [1985])); for the Memes, the interaction between the verbal and the visual (Unsworth, 2006); and for tweets, the Evaluability (Martin and White, 2005). Through the description of the report, we noted a representation of subalternative woman to the public and sexual questions, that happens to be resignified in Memes, when women and men constitute a campaign; in the description of the Memes, we pointed out logico-semantic relations of divergence, when carried out by women, and agreement, when carried out by men, and, finally, in the description of the tweets that refer to the participation of men in the campaign, we observed negative evaluations mostly, proving a feminist discursive hegemony on Twitter. The sociodiscursive analysis, a ided by the linguistic description of the nodes of the chain, proved the transformation of a discourse of feminist resistance into a hegemony in social networks, verified through the evaluation of the participation of men in the campaign. In addition, it was also possible to promote a debate, even if initial, of a methodology for research with discursive genre chain.

Rankin, James Edwin Jr. "The conspiracy theory meme as a tool of cultural hegemony| A critical discourse analysis." Thesis, Fielding Graduate University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10260497.

Abstract:
<p> Those rejecting the official accounts of significant suspicious and impactful events are often labeled conspiracy theorists and the alternative explanations they propose are often referred to as conspiracy theories. These labels are often used to dismiss the beliefs of those individuals who question potentially hegemonic control of what people believe. The conspiracy theory concept functions as an impediment to legitimate discursive examination of conspiracy suspicions. The effect of the label appears to constrain even the most respected thinkers. This impediment is particularly problematic in academia, where thorough, objective analysis of information is critical to uncovering truth, and where members of the academy are typically considered among the most important of epistemic authorities. This dissertation tracked the development and use of such terms as pejoratives used to shut down critical thinking, analysis, and challenges to authority. This was accomplished using critical discourse analysis as a research methodology. Evidence suggesting government agents were instrumental in creating the pejorative meme conspiracy theorist was found in contemporary media. Tracing the evolution of the conspiracy theory meme and its use as a pejorative silencer may heighten awareness of its use in this manner and diminish its impact. </p>

Abstract:
The main objective of this work is to show how can we explain culture within a general Darwinian, naturalistically acceptable framework. To do so, I first reconsider the two main theories that have been proposed with a similar goal: sociobiology and memetics. Concerning the first one, I preserve the idea that every cultural event depends in the long run on a pure biological conditioning. Regarding the latter, I accept that there is a sense of adaptation different from simple development of fitness. My second task is to explain why certain cultural phenomena, maladaptations, are not adaptive in the "increase of fitness" sense, and present and apply an explanatory scheme that accounts for cultural phenomena in a new adaptative manner. In order to articulate these theses in a new proposal, I make use of some work by Boyd and Richerson and introduce the main distinction between first and second order adaptations.

This space has begun to be defined only in the second half of the nineteenth century, when the sugarcane growth had atarted on land located on the banks of the river Cear?-Mirim. The passage of this period of great prosperity can be seen through the heritage material which is still presented in the region. Walking through the Valley, we found a considerable number of architectural buildings, many in ruins, linked to this historical moment. This perception, caused by these buildings, will take us on a trip to the past, back to a time characterized by great-houses, mills, sugarcane plantations, planters, slaves, etc. The references that lead us to consider the sugar mills located along the valley of Cear? Mirim as a patrimony, which carry an entire historical baggage, guide us to the first half of the twentieth century. During this period, the role of intellectuals from the Rio - Sao Paulo through the modernist movement will be decisive in the formation of a national identity. The heritage material identified along the valley of Cear? Mirim defined its current spatial organization, setting the landscape. But we must conceive this landscape into two ways: first, as a material representation of social practices carried out in this space, where social, cultural, economic and environmental aspects have interacted to their training; as well as a landscape that carries a whole historical baggage which was built throughout the twentieth century<br>Este trabalho tem o objetivo de entender como a instala??o da cultura a?ucareira ao longo do rio Cear?-Mirim definiu a organiza??o espacial do Vale, configurando assim a paisagem.

The phenomenon performed by cultural journalism between the first two Bausch s Brazilian tours, occurred in 1980 and 1990 respectively, the first being a pale episode as the audiences reception has been cold and critical, while the second has elevated the German company to a greater level of recognition. What happened meanwhile that promoted such a change? The hypothesis is that the diffusion of information operated by press has dealt to a better knowledge of the choreographer s work, as well as turning it to be familiar to local cultural production, dealing to the construction of a context which is being under process for more than two decades. Reflections raised by Critical Theories of Communication, according to the following authors: Benjamin (1936), Baudrillard (1995), Jameson (1998) and Bauman (2001); evoke arguments which contextualize the cultural compreension of the environment that hosts the object of this research, and the object (the action of cultural journalism between 1980 and 1990 over the diffusion of information about Pina Bausch) focus on the scope of multitude s speech (Negri, 2005). The research over material published in two newspapers from São Paulo: O Estado de São Paulo e Folha de São Paulo, has been related to testimonials of various Brazilian choreographers who recognise that the information brought by Pina Bausch has transformed and impacted their work. The methodology applied has enabled the delimitation of the role played by the newspapers previously mentioned, while interchanging information between public and artists. Theoric-practical transit has been estabilished while interviewing local choreographers whose production relate in a certain way to Pina Bausch s one, that have argumented over this issue. Regarding the lack of specific conjunctural historic source concerning dance in Brazil, this dissertation aims to contribute to on-course discussions over cultural journalism impact and its traces in Brazilians dance<br>O jornalismo cultural contribuiu para difundir o trabalho da coreógrafa alemã Pina Bausch, legitimando sua assimilação junto aos sistemas simbólicos componentes da tessitura cultural brasileira.

Abstract:
E-relevant web text sites (EWT sites) are a relatively new phenomenon featuring banal yet remarkable user-generated texts on dedicated websites. This thesis analyses the sociosemiotic dimension of EWT sites in enabling neo-phatic communication: communication based on the relatable nature of EWT content and user-friendly medium, affording communicative acts without the requirement for in-depth discussion. Rather than fostering serious exchange, neo-phatic communication aims to establish a form of contact less brief than a greeting but akin to its purport, developing from banal but shared experiences. Analysis of the signification process involved in EWT sites, through a sociosemiotic framework based on Peirce’s second trichotomy of signs (icon, index, symbol) and the frame analysis of Goffman, shows that the sites’ semiotic structure belongs to a neo-phatic kind of communication unique to computer-mediated communication. This study illustrates how content with minimal substance might be under-valued as a means of understanding modern communication behaviour.

This dissertation aims to approach the use of Internet images, known as "memes", seeking to understand their effects as elements of cultural propagation. These memes, increasingly present in the virtual environment and in social network feeds, present themselves as a growing tendency not only in humorous and relaxed contexts, but also as a discourse of resistance as opposed to the current social discourse, with subcultures negotiating meanings through images. By analyzing the subjects of language and their conditions of production, we can understand the meanings generated by the "memes" spread throughout the Internet, and their process of resistant cultural propagation. A digital counterculture? We will thus seek to analyze the process of creation, alteration and replication of these images, using as tool the French school of discourse analysis, represented by authors such as Pêcheux and Eni Orlandi, thereby trying to perceive their possibilities as elements of cultural propagation. This will be done initially by analyzing an image feed known as "9gag.com", a social network in which users post, vote comment and share their favorite memes and images; and also a previously selected corpus primarily comprised of images related to the July 2013 popular protests. By combining these two sources, we create a corpus of images to proceed with the discourse analysis of words, discourses, and the subject position of the site users, memes and also the meanings created by the "nerd" subculture itself and its role in resistance discourses in the virtual environment<br>Mestrado<br>Divulgação Científica e Cultural<br>Mestre em Divulgação Científica e Cultural

This project explores internet memes, pinpointing the utilisation of image macros by online-based basketball fans, as a cultural tool for communication, conversation, critique and debate. More specifically, this study focuses on how basketball fans, through image macros, are engaging with different facets of culture, beyond professional sports. The nature of internet memes allow users to create texts that express the tone of their feelings, and this research contends that the idiosyncratic nature of basketball memes are motivated by non-serious sports-related banter, and yet, can potentially offer legitimate cultural insight by often drawing on popular cultural myths and trends.

Abstract:
This dissertation project seeks to answer questions at the intersection of performance and new media with special attention to aesthetic practice. Primarily, the central issue at stake is the issue of material relationships between bodies and technologies as put into practice in a variety of aesthetic forms, including net art, staged performance, and internet memes. After an introduction, the second chapter discusses the method of analysis, schizoanalysis, in depth, drawing from the work of both Deleuze and Guattari as collaborators and Guattari’s extensive solo work. The next chapter addresses the new materialist paradigm that acts as the foundational commitment for seeing staged performances and digital performances as overlapping categories of phenomena. From there, the analysis shifts to questions of ontology, including the impact of naming certain behaviors on the understanding of those behaviors as well as the nature of performance itself. Just as Peggy Phelan asserts that performance is ephemeral, immediate, and nonreproducible, one can see encounters with new media under this same framework. The following three chapters act as specific case studies, using screen theory to understand staged performances, sequential art theory to explain the relationships between disparate parts of both new mediated and staged performance, and theories of identity and gender to understand selfies as constructive digital performances. Though this project offers no guarantees or certitudes, certain themes did emerge through the analysis, such as the place of the body in discourses of technology; connections between the audience and the art object, the art object and its environment, and the audience and the environment; and the impact of time, especially immediacy, on the understanding of both staged and mediated works. The hope of this project is necessarily one of offering answer, but instead of point to new questions and offering some starting points for further consideration.

Abstract:
The ability to inject DNA and other foreign particles into cells, both germ cells (e.g. to produce transgenic animals) and somatic cells (e.g. for gene therapy), is a powerful tool in genetic research. Nanoinjection is a method of DNA delivery that combines mechanical and electrical methods. It has proven to have higher cell viability than traditional microinjection, resulting in higher integration per injected embryo. The nanoinjection process can be performed on thousands of cells simultaneously using an array of microneedles that is inserted into a monolayer of cells. This thesis describes the needle array design requirements and the fabrication process used to meet them. The process uses unpassivated and passivated deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) to create needles with a constant diameter shaft and a pointed tip. The needle diameter and height are about 1 µm and 8 µm, respectively. A buckling analysis and physical testing show that the needles can withstand the force required to penetrate the cells. The chip is attached to a plastic suspension with a counter electrode and electrical connections to a voltage source. The suspension's motion is defined by two compliant orthoplanar springs that have been vertically and rotationally offset for added stability. The base of the suspension is designed to exactly fit in the bottom of a cell culture dish, where the needle array can be pushed into the cell monolayer. Injection protocol was created and followed to perform tests with needle insertion only, voltage application only, and the full nanoinjection process. The average cell viability for the full injection process was 98.2% compared to an average control viability of 99.5%. Zero volt injections with a high concentration of propidium iodide, a cell impermeable dye with two positive charges, resulted in dye uptake from diffusion, proving that the needles are penetrating the cells. Tests comparing injections with and without voltage had high variability in dye uptake. Therefore, glass cover slips were placed in the culture dishes to provide more consistent injection conditions. This reduced variation in zero voltage tests. It is recommended that this procedure be followed for performing injections with voltage.

The research has the overall objective to demonstrate how, when putting down on paper his project or when drawing, a stylist transforms his mental representation in a graphical representation ___ the fashion design that becomes language and memory device or memories ___ that by itself already works with time and awakens memories and/or oblivion, associating cultures and showing designer's identity. In this sense, an understanding of drawing as a visual record of fashionable it becomes a memory device , presents the language, memory , culture and identity that strengthens timeless way ( towards the transit times past , future or present, without reducing Cartesian duration of these ), with existing variables and overcoming the idea of objectification image . The research focuses both evocative and inspiring aspects of social and anthropological dimension of the design , as the technical aspect determining the achievement of these . Thus , this paper highlights , the universe of Fashion Design, the fact that the designers of the area generally look to the past references to the identity of this recreating times , and from there , the research investigates the production designer Vitorino Fields which demonstrates their parts inspiration from other eras. In this way, the work intends to contribute to systematize a knowledge concerning the analysis of fashion images within a broad perspective and based on specialized theory on the subject, linked to the substrates chosen since the title of the Thesis. Through the observation of designs shown here, it was sought to demonstrate the existing relations since the idea creation until the final piece manufacturing by the stylist. Thus, the research was cultivated in a way to show the Drawing's implicit or explicit sense relations from a documentary survey and a field research with semi-structured interview and the found data discussion.<br>Esse trabalho estuda o Desenho de Moda enquanto linguagem e dispositivo de mem?ria, identidade e cultura, a partir da obra do estilista baiano Vitorino Campos.

Such a work shows a study concerning the above-mentioned Institutions covering the period from 1960 to 1980, in order to identify the Philharmonics members? profiles, their partners and leading groups; events in which both Institutions used to participate, the type of audience that accompanied them and the relationships between the Philharmonics and that time municipal government. The work also exhibits the tours of various locations accomplished by the above-mentioned Philharmonics, as well as the conflicts between them upon showing off in the garden bandstands concerts. We have chosen the time frame among the years 1960 to 1980, seeking to identify the cultural, social and technological transformations in Brazil and in Cachoeira Town during that period and the impacts the Military Dictatorship caused in Cachoeira?s Philharmonics. The issue that guided the research was based upon the following question: what survival strategy were developed by both Philharmonics to keep themselves alive and resistant to the pressures imposed by the diffusion of new technologies, new rhythms and sounds? In order to obtain answers to our questions we have used several sources, such as minutes of meetings, members? book, the institution regulations, articles, photographs, newspapers and interviews with both Philharmonics musicians. This research accomplishment is justified considering it provides a thorough analysis about the above-metioned Philharmonics, also due to what they have promoted and are currently developing social and educational work of great relevance to not only the town but also other locations? teenagers and young adults.<br>O presente trabalho teve como objeto de an?lise as filarm?nicas da cidade de Cachoeira a Lyra Ceciliana e a Minerva Cachoeirana, fundadas em 1870 e 1878 respectivamente. Dept. of Visual Arts<br>Thesis (MA (VA)) -- Stellenbosch University, 2006.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Cultural evolution & genre: an investigation of three South African graphic narratives of the South African Border war (1975-1988) Magister in Fine Arts thesis, Department of Fine Arts, Stellenbosch University This study analyses three South African graphic narratives in the context of culture evolving in the Darwinian sense. It is deemed necessary to consider evolutionary theory in such a study of graphic narratives as it considers the development of culture as resulting from a process of evolution akin to natural selection. Special attention is paid to the theory of memetics, in the field of evolutionary epistemology, and its proposal to model cultural evolution. While this model relies on evolutionary theory, the development of culture is seen as evolving separately from biological evolution. This evolutionary perspective on culture is combined with the concepts of discourse and genre in social semiotics and media studies to investigate the changes in the depiction of the Border war in South African graphic narratives. As such this study focuses on the strategic viewpoint of cultural evolution, the role of memes in genre and its interaction with the evolution of discourse. Abstract:
Abstract:Social Media has become a powerful tool in several aspects. It can mobilize movements, rallying for social or political causes, and it can bring people together to share experiences or interest on a global platform. Social media platforms have facilitated more dynamic ways of presenting and performing identity positions such as race, gender, class and sexuality. Though many scholars have agreed that the internet and social media offer interesting new aspects in relation to identity exploration and self-expression, the performance of identity online can also contribute to problematic discourses that reinforce old social stereotypes online affecting what happens offline. This thesis explores racial performance on social media by examining the phenomenon of ‘Digital Blackface’, which is a virtual continuation of a historical phenomenon that operates, in particular, through Internet memes. The thesis studies different versions of an American meme, which represent an altered representation of a real person, known as Sweet Brown. Sweet Brown is an African American woman who after she was interviewed on television became a viral celebrity. Due to her expressive personality, her image has been remixed into several popular Internet memes. The theoretical framework consists of a theorization of racial performance and media representation theory. This theoretical lens is used in the analysis that sets out to answer the questions, how is the Sweet Brown meme used as a form of racial performance online? What is Digital Blackface and how does it operate online? And In what way can racial performance reinforce stereotypic representations? The methodological approach the thesis employs to conduct the analysis and exemplify the problematics are visual analysis, critical discourse analysis, and critical theory. Further, the implication of racial performances in Internet memes is linked to other recent cases or incidents that relate to issues of racial performance in the media. Keywords: Racial Performance, Internet memes, Minstrelsy, Digital Blackface, Internet Culture, Representation, Race, Racism.

Both sources were analyzed in the light of Paul Ricoeur s narrative hermeneutics, in dialogue with Hannah Arendt s political philosophy and with Marie-Christine Josso s methodology for the study of life stories. The written and oral narratives put the following questions: how I became an agent of peace? What facts, circumstances, people, events, situations, led these professors to be sensitive to the Education for Peace? Understand the choices and the directions taken by educators during their professionalization was one of the wires conductors of this study. The stories of the studied educators led me to a thorough examination of the Peace as praxis and human dimension, built in deepening dialogue and experience. Being an educator for Peace calls for a choice and a look directed to the plurality and the condition of man in the world. Peace, in these stories of life, leads to a collective responsibility and to a conscious political position, becoming a polysemic concept that embraces values and principles to be effective. Enlarged by the possibility of life in the narratives of the studied professors, peace becomes a human science and the presente study becomes one of the more steps we take towards a training effort for Peace.<br>Este estudo foi elaborado com vistas a investigar as hist?rias de cinco educadores, professores universit?rios, que foram/s?o integrantes do Grupo de Estudo de Paz GEPAZ da Pontif?cia Universidade Cat?lica do Rio Grande do Sul PUCRS, para os quais foi proposta a escrita de memoriais autobiogr?ficos e entrevistas sobre narrativas de vida, enquanto fontes autobiogr?ficas, para a an?lise do trabalho no que concerne ? dire??o metodol?gica da pesquisa.

Cameron, Sheila G. "The emergence of cultural policy in Zimbabwe 1984-1997." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/2393.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis re-presents the lived experience of cultural animation and policy production in postcolonial Zimbabwe, seeking to place these observations and theories in the domain of Cultural Policy Studies. The nation was in transition from oracy to literacy and from colonial control to socialist independence. Cultural workers in Bulawayo were very productive after Independence without apparently being aware of any policies. How, then, did things get done? The initial premise was that people living in oral cultures were always able to discuss plans and implement decisions, and that endogenous and exogenous influences (theorised as memes) were incorporated experimentally in a cultural bricolage. Part One introduces the pre-policy context of cultural change in precolonial and postcolonial situations, theorises cultural change at a micro level in terms of memetics and explains the methodology of multiple case studies. Part Two looks for origins of cultural concepts in 19th century white-authored journals and 20th century revolutionary texts and presents a critical analysis of formal documents controlling cultural policy since Independence. The importance of plurilingualism, translation and literacy in interactions between social actors is examined. Part Three provides empirical evidence to refine the original proposition in a detailed synchronic study of local cultural praxis. Discourse analysis of conflict and consensus operating at grassroots level is followed by accounts of the increasing management capacity of some groups as they become professional performers in international arenas. Contrasting instances of individual and communal animation are found in the development of institutions. Part Four discusses the role of dynamic oral policies in cultural action both in a pre-policy situation and in the implementation of documented policy in a democratising polity. The thesis also has potential for its theoretical findings to be applied in different national contexts of development and beyond cultural policy to other spheres where an increasing volume of policy initiatives challenges the people charged with their implementation.

Through the flyers, we present and noted how they can be used to combat racism that still persists in Brazil. The Popular culture, placed at the beginning by the intellectuality as if it needed help of this society segment to stay alive, can?t be seen anymore as static, but perceived as a source of revelation and knowledge construction. The corpus of this work are the flyers of Rodolfo Cavalcante and Franklin Maxado, two great exponents of Cordel Literature in the northeast of Bahia. These flyers, as well as entertainment and information, proved themselves true historical documents. In this sense, hidden figures by society, as the slave of the nineteenth century, Lucas da Feira, gain the opportunity, through the verses from Cordel, to prove themselves as memory. Coupled to these questions we have as focus on this study, to realize popular culture and its signs in Cordel Literature.<br>O presente trabalho buscou trazer um panorama, de como a Literatura de Cordel chega ao Brasil e constr?i ao longo tempo, uma identidade pr?pria de produ??o, circula??o e padr?o de constru??o. Abstract:
In this thesis, I’m working from the premise that postmodernism hitherto has been associated with the left. The next line of argument is, however, that this relation is contingent and that there is no necessity in postmodernisms association with left-wing ideas and political ambitions. To challenge this assumption, I intend to demonstrate that the Alt-Right, a far-right movement, at least in some respects can be considered as postmodern. If there is indeed cause to think of the Alt-Right as postmodern, then we would have to rethink postmodernisms political inclination. I intend to operationalize this by looking at the Alt-Right’s views on the changeability of politics and the social world, and pop culture, through the lens of a set of postmodern ideas. In particular, postmodern ideas concerning language, discourse and culture, and in doing so get a grip on whether it is correct to view the Alt-Right as postmodern or not. If a connection between the Alt-Right and postmodernism indeed exists, then we would have to rethink the necessity in the left-wing nature of postmodernism.

Abstract:
Using Facebook from a theater of war provides a particularly unique vantage point from which to study the broader shift in our communication environment. While many communication technologies began in warzones for mission purposes--connecting planes to the ground, connecting and coordinating strikes and ambushes, reporting needs for medics, and so on, warzones are not known for connecting the war front and the home front. Thus the culture of perpetual contact ushered in by social media technologies like Facebook collides with a situation quintessentially associated with a lack of contact. Surprisingly this point has received little scholarly attention. This dissertation examines the way US troops use Facebook from a theater of war to narrate their experiences to their civilian network members, to each other, and to themselves. The project explores how US troops define and are defined by existing discourses of war; how they shape and are shaped by technological advancements, and how all these relationships are changing what "war" means in this millennium. Data include 20 semi-structured in-person interviews, which took place on active bases in Okinawa, Japan and Camp Pendleton, California. Data also include the field notes from those visits as well as field notes and screen captures of Facebook observations.

The scholarization of Literature sometimes priviledged the emphasis on literary theory?s characterization, sometimes supported the art for art?s sake movement, sometimes limited the teaching to the study of literary genres with focus on the teacher. Approaches of such nature do not emphasize students? cultural universe and specific identities. Therefore, this thesis aims to analyse reading practices and production of literary texts, considering 31 collaborators? cultural universes, people who are students and former students of Portuguese and Literarute at IFRN?s Nova Cruz, Macau and Sao Goncalo do Amarante campuses, on the context of the ?Promoting Readings, Gaining Readers? (PRGR) literacy project. To achieve this goal, it was investigated how the reading and writing practices that were developed in the PRGR literacy project can build a community of readers in which students? cultural universes are valued, turning them into literacy agents, with the purpose of (i) exploring the literacy practices carried out in the ?Promoting Readings, Gaining Readers? (PRGR) literacy project; (ii) discuss the actions that were developed in schools to create a community of readers with focus on students? cultural universe; (iii) determine the PRGR literacy project?s impact towards the development of a reader and writer?s identity in 31 collaborators, who are students and former students of Portuguese and Literarute at IFRN?s Nova Cruz, Macau and Sao Goncalo do Amarantecampuses. This study is based on the following theories: literacy studies (KLEIMAN, 1995; STREET, 2014), specifically on the Multiple Literacy theory (OLIVEIRA; KLEIMAN, 2008), Literacy Projects (OLIVEIRA, 2008; 2010a; OLIVEIRA, TINOCO; SANTOS, 2011), Communities of Learning (OLIVEIRA, 2010b) and Silenced Literacy (KEY, 1998).It is also based on the literary text?s theories (COMPAGNON, 2009; TODOROV, 2009; DERRIDA, 2014; EAGLETON, 2010; ABREU, 2006; LAJOLO, 2001; COELHO, 2000; BOURDIEU, 1996) and on the Collective Memories? theories (HALBWACHS, 2006 ; BOSI, 2003); Culture (WILLIAMS, 2011A; 2011B; CERTEAU, 2014) and Identity (BAUMAN, 2005, 2013; FOUCALT, 2014; 2015; PETIT, 2009A; 2009B, 2013, HALL, 2011 e LAHIRE, 2002).Methodologically, this study, which has an etnographic nature (STREET, 2014; THOMAS, 1993; CAN?ADO, 1994; MAGALH?ES, 1994; MOITA LOPES, 1993; AGAR 2005), is situated in the Critical Applied Linguistics field (KLEIMAN, 2013; MOITA LOPES, 2006; PENNYCOOK, 2006) and adopts the qualitative approach (BAUER; GASKELL, 2002; FLICK, 2004; BIBBS, 2009), focusing on the Straightening Research (OLIVEIRA, 2004).The data analysis allowed the demonstration that (i) the collaborators? relationship with literary reading surpasses the limits of formal scholarization; (ii) the literary text is part of the collaborators? lives and is not restrained to the school environment; (iii) the literary text can contribute to the development of alternative communities of readers and writers? identities; (iv) the reading practices, experienced during the course of the project, are life-changing.

The analysis began in 1968, when Institutional Act No. 5 (AI-5) entered into force - when the civil-military dictatorship became more difficult, when surveillance, censorship and repression no longer existed. were veiled, but clear and cruel, and ended in 1974, as the year in which the so-called "economic miracle" ended, with an oil crisis. During the period under study, new regulations were introduced for basic and higher education, reflecting education and conservation and authoritarian state, making clear in their purposes that they aimed at building a liberal economic program and a passive and uncritical society. As legislation, education and integration of education through a critical, reflective and transformative education. The work was carried out from a case study at the Feirense Municipal Gymnasium Joselito Amorim school. The school was created in 1963, during the administration of the mayor Francisco Pinto, with the name of Municipal Gymnasium of Feira de Santana and it underwent a first hearing of the dictatorial regime soon in the following year, in 1964 with a dismissal of the mayor and appointment of Joselito Amorim to take charge, which started the construction of a new school building and points to the name of Joselito Amorim Municipal Gymnasium. The school became, therefore, a space of political conflicts, not which, through the teaching, an educated ideal of society was disputed for subjects to be formed. Oral sources, interviews with former students of the school, and photos of the city during the period studied were sent. In the first moment of the work, ruptures and continuities in education from the 1960s onwards are discussed, considering the influences exerted by the authoritarian State that was established in Brazil after 1964. In order to consolidate its ideals of development, homeland and nation, education was put under the control and surveillance of the security organs and had their curricula reformulated at all levels of education, becoming increasingly uncritical and technical, to provide more effective workforce for a developing industry. In-hand of the City of Feira de Santana during the 1960s and 1970s, addressing local politics, in line with the national political context and its influence on education movements in the city. Finally, they are addressed as memories of the subjects who experienced the education in the Municipal Gym Joselito Amorim during the period cut in the research. The memories brought by them are extremely important for an understanding of school everyday and the political elements that permeated the school culture without the end of the 1960s and the first time of the 1970s in the city of Feira de Santana.<br>O presente trabalho tem por objetivo compreender alguns caminhos percorridos pela educa??o brasileira durante parte do per?odo de maior rigidez do regime civil-militar e a maneira como os ideais de conserva??o da ordem estabelecida pela ditadura e seus interesses econ?micos se refletiram no ensino e na cultura escolar na cidade baiana de Feira de Santana.

CHAN, Pik Ying. "Are you what you have? The role of motivation and cultural value congruency on the mere ownership effect." Digital Commons @ Lingnan University, 2017. https://commons.ln.edu.hk/psy_etd/7.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous research on mere ownership effect has shown that merely possessing an object results in enhanced evaluation of that object (Beggan, 1992), when compared with unowned (Belk, 1988; Dittmar, 1992; Prelinger, 1959) or others-owned object (Nesselroade et al., 1999). Since people see their possessions as an extension of their self-identities (Belk, 1988), it is suggested that making self-enhancing judgments about possessions would satisfy owners' desires to maintain positive self-image. Extending the traditional mere ownership effect, this thesis examined whether people perceive having endowed the positive features of the product upon acquiring its ownership prior to its actual use, using essential oil products as stimuli objects. It is hypothesized that the proposed mere ownership effect would occur only when participants are motivated to self-enhance; and when the functional value of the owned object is congruent to the participants' own cultural value. A cross-cultural experiment was conducted in the United States and Hong Kong, with 93 American students and 99 Hong Kong students. Participants in both cultural groups were presented an essential oil product which was claimed to have a therapeutic function of enhancing one's holistic mode of thinking. Given that holistic thinking ability is valued in Asian culture compared to American culture, the oil's functional value is congruent to the cultural value of the Hong Kong participants relative to the American participants. Results showed that HK participants, who are motivated to enhance their holistic thinking ability, reported higher self-perceived efficacy in holistic thinking once they merely owned the ""holistic"" essential oils. This self-enhancing tendency did not happen in the American samples whose cultural orientation does not emphasize the importance of holism; and in participants who were not motivated to enhance their holistic thinking ability. The findings have important implications in understanding the circumstances in which this new form of the mere ownership effect might occur.

O humor também ganha foco especial e o fazer rir transforma-se em pano de fundo essencial para a crítica social e política.<br>Abstract: Faced with the constant transformations of communication processes, the present study is aimed to dive into the dynamics of memes, focusing especially on the pieces shared during the impeachment process of former president Dilma Rousseff, in 2016. We raised a few questions: would memes be more than imagistic representations created for mere amusement or could they be categorized as an important tool of freedom of expression, therefore apt to be applied as a direct influence on public opinion? Humor also gains special focus and making laughing becomes an essential backdrop for social and political criticism.<br>Mestre
