Full textTo this day, very little is known about the way aging affects everyday episodic memory, which is a visually and contextually rich and complex memory. However, episodic memory is traditionally assessed using verbal tasks which are lacking such complexity. One of them, the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) uses the multi-trial free recall paradigm that we also implemented in the Human Object Memory of Everyday Scenes test using virtual reality to simulate a visit in an apartment (the HOMES test). This procedure allowed us to assess multiple memory processes such as learning, semantic clustering, proactive interference, recall versus recognition, and false recognitions. We also wanted to investigate the relationship between everyday memory and action through active navigation and its effects on each of these processes. We showed the typical profile of older adults usually obsereved using traditional paper-pencil tests on most of the memory indices except for proactive interference, which was not increased. In fact, older adults showed a reduced free recall performance despite a preserved learning ability across trials, a benefit from recognition but also a higher susceptibility to false recognitions. TBI patients (study 1) showed a profile similar to that of older adults, but patients with Alzheimer disease were impaired on all of the HOMES indices (study 2). Studies 3 and 4 examined the beneficial effect of active navigation in younger and older adults’ everyday memory and showed that that recognition was the measure that benefited the most in both age groups. In contrast, older adults while active navigation decreased false recognitions in younger adults, it actually increased false recognitions in older adults. Our results on everyday memory are discussed in terms of item-specific deficit and executive deficit hypotheses in normal aging
Walter, Philippe. "L'ordre et la memoire du temps : la fete et le calendrier dans les oeuvres narratives francaises de chretien de troyes a la mort artu." Paris 4, 1987. http://www.theses.fr/1987PA040176.
Full textThe study of temporal marks and calendar mentions in the french narrative from chretien de troyes to la mort artu (1170-1230) emphasizes an esthetical conception of the narrative where the theme of feast and the two concepts of order and memory (used in mmedieval comput) are essential. The analysis of calendar and courteos feasts shows that this literature promotes a culture based on play and pleasure, in opposition to a culture based on order (ordo) symbolized by liturgical feasts. In medieval societies, the calendar is a strategical space where two memories struggle for power. Medieval hagiography tries to conciliate them : it perpetuates old mythological substrata of paganism in the seasons of liturgical year. A comparative reading conscious of the calendar structure of medieval "imaginaire" explains several themes of courteosy and a few aspects of the french popykar tales

Full textOwing to the backward glance willa cather deliberately cast upon an idealized past at a time when america was more deeply concerned with current topical issues, her works remained neglected for a long time - until, that is, feminist criticism salvaged her from relative obscurity. Bearing this in mind, this work sets out to examine the nature, paradoxes and functions of time and memory in her fiction. After emphasizing a certain number of tensions intrinsic to her works (union and division, alienation and the sense of belonging, past and present, that which is remembered and that which is forgotten. . . ), we then turn to psychoanalysis in order to throw light upon a conflictual dimension which is closely related to an aesthetics of loss. However, a unifying force gradually appears, originating from the author's profound awareness of debt to her literary and cultural forbears. The acceptance of such knowledge then acts as a catalyst for artistic creation. Our study of photography enables us to grasp the essence of such a paradox : within the limits of its frame, a photograph both concentrates the tensions inherent in the perception of transience and allows the artist to create an image which will transcend this critical awareness. Following this analysis of the influence of photography on cather's vision of time, our study of desire as a major liberating force finally leads us to highlight willa cather's conception of art as the poetic medium through which she resolves the inner contradictions of her approach to time

Full textIn italy in the early 20 th, a la recherche du temps perdu upsets the world image and novel writing. Our study deals with the reception and influence of proust's works in italy from 1913 to 1972, starting from a few novels and short stories : senilita, la coscienza di zeno (italo svevo), uno, nessuno e centomila (luigi pirandello), paese d'ombre (conrado alvaro), san silvano (giuseppe dessi), conversazione in sicilia (elio vittorini), la luna e i falo (cesare pavese), menzogna e sortilegio (elsa morante) and ii romanzo di ferrara (giorgio bassani). Our perceives, among these novelists, a similar perception of time and duration made possible by the action of memory. From senilita to l'odore del fieno there appears an evolution of the character in search of their past +incantevole ma distante; and their identity. The time dimension in spite of its aggressivity and corrosion, generates timelessness i. E. True life

Full textThrough the indirect means of memory, this work follows women's routes - from italian unity to neo-feminism - from the house, traditional female space, ans specific space for woman herself (the house as a mother's womb) to the confused "word" of this end of millenary : "storia" of an everyday life which, nevertheless, renders an account of the century violence. The house acts as a social as vell as domestic imaginary, therefore, leaving the house answers a dual necessity for women : dystopia of the house as a useless protection and a will to partecipate in the world management. The female character signalizes itself by a particuliar understanding of the living space where the phobia of cellars may throw a light upon the impossible return to the mother. The time to break with mothers comes in the seventies, "the bad mothers "appearing with the claim for feminine reality. Then the memory of history allows a confirmation of a correspondence between the dystopia of the house and the utopia of a different word. With the search for "something else" which includes maternal fonction, the responsability of women who want not to conquer the world but to "live" in it, to make possible to live in. The crisis of ideoligies that women perceived before men, colours with an aspiration for "real justice" according to antigone's law : the law of blood against written law
