Full textThe first offers, in the context of an historical analysis, an inventory of the main implicit and explicit tests of memory. The second chapter, reports many works investigating the relation between these two types of tests when traditional variables (levels of processing, delay, context. . . ) and the caracteristic of the subjects (normals vs amnesics; children vs adults vs elderly) are manipulated. The third chapter presents and critically evaluates the theories that claim to account for the observed relations between implicit and explicit tests of memory. Finally, the last chapter includes three series of experiments with the aim, on the one hand, to provide additional arguments for functional theories and, on the other hand, to develop a more personal) conception of remembering regarding it the result of the attribution of mental contents to the past

Full textMental workload measures raise practical problems and their relation with information processing is often unclear. On the contrary, the use of memory tasks make sense with practical criteria and do inform about information processing. Besides these advantages, recent results suggest that the qualitative nature of processing operations could be analyzed by selecting appropriate memory tasks. Indeed, dissociation between implicit and explicit measures of retention can be explained by the compatibility of processing operations conducted at study and at test : some memory tasks are more compatible with data-driven processes whereas other are more compatible with conceptually-driven processes. On this basis, four field experiments were runned with skilled operators conducting a pressurized water reactor. First, results show that memory performance can serve to evaluate the effectiveness of graphical coding the designer use in order to make salient important features for severity within the display. Second, by reproducing dissociation between memory tasks as a function of level of processing and type of information, results show that the perceptiveconceptual nature of processing operations can be analyzed by using appropriate memory tasks. Therefore the relative contribution of perceptive versus conceptual operations within information processing can be analyzed by a procedure applicable in work situations, an appropriate procedure for practitioners

Full textIn this work we are defending the hypothesis of an automatic processing of the knowledge pertaining to the perceptual characteristics of an object in its absence. In order to eliminate any lower-level process, we do not concern ourselves with information that is directly visible within an object, but instead focus on perceptual knowledge that is latent in the semantic memory and could be triggered by the object. The two perceptual dimensions which are the subject of our study are colour and size while category is the non-perceptual dimension. We make use of black and white drawings of objects which appear on screen in their real-life sizes. These drawings are subjected to decisions relating to their category, real-life sizes and typical (unrevealed) colour. To begin with, the decisions relate to drawings shown in isolation. We then use the same drawings in several experiments following a priming procedure whereby we vary the SOA(Stimulus Onset Asynchrony). Finally, we manipulate the chromatic link between a referent and a distractor in a task of category matching. We obtain a facilitation for the task pertaining to category when the prime and target are of congruent colours which, in our opinion, implies an implicit treatment of the colour of the prime leading to a facilitation of the treatment of the target. We interpret this facilitation in terms of a diffusion of the triggering/activation mechanism within the semantic network. Moreover, we observe the interference of colour with the task of category matching, thereby reinforcing the results obtained in the priming paradigm. As regards size, the results obtained are analogous to those registered for colour

Full textThe objective of this thesis is to reassess the influence of congruence between the sponsor and the sponsee ~ on sponsor memorization and on attitude and beliefs toward the sponsor. It is the apparent inconsistency between common sponsorship practices and empirical results concerning congruence that guided the choice of this research. Indeed, existing studies suggest that sponsorship is not effective for incongruent sponsors and this result doesn't correspond to current practices. We believe that this apparent inconsistency comes 1) from an absence of strong theoretical frameworks in the majority of existing studies, 2) from methodological limits of existing studies, and 3) from the absence of manipulation of a variable linked to the level of elaboration of the sponsors. In this research we did three experiments in laboratory to study the influence of congruence and those experiences all 1) used strong theoretical framework and in particular evaluative and non-evaluative conditioning theories, 2) used implicit measures in order to decrease the methodological biases of existing studies and 3) manipulated the opportunity to process the sponsors. The results indicate 1) that a decrease in opportunity to process the sponsors increases the evaluative and non-evaluative transfers between the sponsee and the sponsors and 2) that, under low opportunity to process the sponsors, the two types of transfers (le. Evaluative and non evaluative) cant take place not only for congruent brands but also for strongly incongruent brand (for instance a brand of cigarettes sponsoring a tennis tournament)
