Abstract:
This thesis investigates crime memorabilia, or ‘true crime objects’, and proposes the concept of ‘authenticity’ as a way of understanding the perceived value and imagined criminality inside of objects, artefacts, exhibitions and consumables associated with famous violent crimes. Murderabilia has enjoyed a sustained rise in interest in both news media and popular culture, but academic research has been limited. It addresses a central contradiction in the paucity of literature that has touched upon murderabilia – to what extent is murderabilia an extension of existing violent transgressive narra

Thesis advisor: Christopher Bruell<br>This study of Xenophon’s Memorabilia investigates the famous Socratic thesis that virtue is knowledge. Specifically, it is an attempt to understand the claim that anyone who knows what the right thing is to do, automatically chooses to do it. I concentrate on Socrates’ view of one particular virtue, namely moderation. This is both because moderation is the virtue that Xenophon’s Socrates most often identifies with knowledge, and because it is the virtue that Xenophon associates most closely with Socrates himself. Between the 18th and 19th centuries, Naples and its kingdom were a lively hub for the antiquarian milieu both local and non-local. The Bourbon Crown made a noteworthy effort to safeguard the archaeological heritage of the State, especially following the beginning of the excavations in the Vesuvian sites: Herculaneum in 1738, Pompeii in 1748, and Stabia in 1749. In fact, these “regi scavi” were an allodial asset, meaning that they were a private property of the Bourbons. Current research on transformation has been primarily interested in triggers and the process of transformation. Yet, few studies have looked into examining what happens in the aftermath of a transformative experience, and how transformation takes effect. More work is needed to understand the measurement of transformation in the post-experience stage. This study aims to fill this gap by zooming in on the role of artefacts, namely ‘memorabilia’, in transformation.
