This article seeks to explore the controversy surrounding the Scottish National War Memorial. It analyses the arguments over the design of the memorial and its impact on Edinburgh Castle. The criticisms by Lord Rosebery and others of the design proposed by Robert Lorimer are dealt with in detail. The campaign by the Duke of Atholl to raise money for the memorial is scrutinised and the difficulties in securing donations at a time when there were many simultaneous attempts to raise money for local and institutional memorials is discussed. Memorial issues have been one of the most important themes of the French presidential campaign of 2022. Éric Zemmour’s demand to abolish the memorial laws and Marine Le Pen’s and Valérie Pécresse’s criticism of the commemorations of the end of the Algerian War have made the relationship with the colonial past a polarising electoral issue. While the extreme right has exploited this theme since the 1960s, it is surprising that Valérie Précresse, a loyal supporter of Jacques Chirac, the great promoter of memorial reconciliation, has made anti-repentance one of her campaign themes. In memories of the construction of Brasília, the process of formation of urban space was commonly portrayed by dualities: the planned and disorder, the modern and the popular or order and chaos. These are contrasts that, when juxtaposed with everyday experience, reveal dichotomies such as need and right. From this perspective, this research presents itself from a historiographical narrative sensitive to the corporeal dimension of events, with the memories, experiences and identities of women who experienced the deprivation of their rights and urgent needs. This work, therefore, intends to reco

In the border and transit area along the Apennine ridge between Romagna and Tuscany, encastellation has given rise to villages and towns since medieval times. Although by the end of the nineteenth century most of the defense systems had already been lost, there are numerous vestiges of that heritage that still endure today. Examples are the fortress of Riolo Terme, in the province of Ravenna; and that of Monte Battaglia, in Casola Valsenio, still employed as strategic nodes during World War II. In the first case it is a square defense tower built in 1388, in its original core, by the Bolognese

The Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki represent the horrors of war as places of the hundred-thousandfold killing of humans with scientific and industrial means. And as such Hiroshima and Nagasaki (to a lesser degree) became dominant symbols within global memory culture. In my paper I will juxtapose this form of commemoration with what Jeffrey Alexander claimed was an ongoing universalization of the Holocaust as a symbol of radical evil. This universalization also supposedly led to the globalization of aesthetic standards in museum designs of memorial museums worldwide, deriving from Holoc

Managers are challenged with the impact of problematic plants, including exotic, invasive, and pest plant species. Information on the cover, distribution, and location of these plants is essential for developing risk-based approaches to managing these species. Based on surveys conducted in 2006, 2011, 2015, and 2019, Heartland Network staff and contractors identified a cumulative total of 28 potentially problematic plant taxa in Arkansas Post National Memorial. The National Park Service (NPS) Natural Resource Condition Assessment (NRCA) Program administered by the NPS Water Resources Division evaluates current conditions for important natural resources and resource indicators using primarily existing information and data. NRCAs also report on trends in resource condition, when possible, identify critical data gaps, and characterize a general level of confidence for study findings. This NRCA complements previous scientific endeavors, is multi-disciplinary in scope, employs a hierarchical indicator framework, identifies and develops reference condition

Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial celebrates the lives of the Lincoln family including the final resting place of Abraham’s mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Lincoln’s childhood in Indiana was a formative time in the life our 16th president. When the Lincoln family arrived in Indiana, the property was covered in the oak-hickory forest type. They cleared land to create their homestead and farm. Later, designers of the memorial felt that it was important to restore woodlands to the site. The woodlands would help visitors visualize the challenges the Lincoln family faced in establishing and maintainin

From 16 years (2005–2020) of monitoring trends in white-tailed deer within a defined survey area of Arkansas Post National Memorial, we have been able to demonstrate both population declines and recoveries. The adjusted count of deer had a seven-fold increase between 2007 and 2011 following a two-year decline and a three-fold increase between 2017 and 2019 following a six-year decline. Overall, the deer population has declined slightly, averaging a 0.5% reduction in herd size annually. The number of deer in the survey area ranged from 16.77 ± 21.26 (mean + 95% CI) individuals/km2 in 2007 to 11

The purpose of this analysis is to monitor changes in the spatial patterns of overflights at Mount Rushmore National Memorial (MORU) after the implementation of the park’s Air Tour Management Plan (ATMP). Overflights were compared across 2023 and 2024 using Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) data collected over identical timeframes, May 15th to June 25th. This report expands upon an initial 2022 study that revealed a ring-like spatial pattern of overflights near MORU below 1600 feet mean sea level (MSL; Peterson et al., 2022). These are the notes and comments summarizing the incomplete work to assess stresses on vintage pipelines due to soil loadings. The work was performed by C-FER Technologies, Battelle Memorial Institute, and Marina Smith. The overall objective was to develop an assessment tool that would allow pipeline engineers to evaluate the safety of shallowly buried pre-1970 pipelines under static and cyclic surface loads. The work completed includes the development of a dynamic model. However, the weld capacity models were never completed. Related documents (attachments can be found in the links below).
