DeGuzman, Joseph Christopher. "Memory of Chirality in 1,4-Benzodiazepin-2-ones." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28079.

Full text
Abstract:
Memory of chirality (MOC) is an emerging strategy in asymmetric synthesis. It has been applied to enolate chemistry, reactions involving carbocation intermediates, and to radical systems. In this strategy the chirality of an enantiopure reactant is transferred to the dynamic chirality of a reactive intermediate to produce stereospecific product. 1,4-Benzodiazepin-2-ones have been described as a â privilegedâ structure in medicinal chemistry. In addition to their uses as anxiolytics (Valium ®) and anti-epileptic agents (Clonopin ®), they have shown activity as HIV Tat antagonist, ras farnesyltransferase inhibitors in cancer cells, and antiarrhythmic agents. Because of the utility of this scaffold in the area of medicinal chemistry, it has served as a template in libraries for tens of thousands of compounds. Despite the vast diversity of 1,4-benzodiazepin-2-ones, there are few routes to enantiomerically enriched 3,3-disubstituted benzodiazepines containing a â quaternaryâ stereogenic center. This research will discuss the stereochemical properties of 1,4-benzodiazepin-2-ones, and provide a novel approach to synthesize enantiomerically enriched â quaternaryâ benzodiazepines with stereogenic centers through MOC, without the use of external chiral sources.

Ismet, Burcak. "The Memory Of Time: Virtuality In Deleuze." Master's thesis, METU, 2007. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/2/12608297/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this master&rsquo
s thesis is to examine the concept of difference according to French philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Henri Bergson. In order to explicate this crucial concept and its emphasis in these thinkers&rsquo
philosophies, this dissertation is focused on the notion of time and memory. Through the thesis, first Deleuze&rsquo
s critical attitude towards representational and dialectical approachs for difference is elucidated. After the comprehensive examination for the meaning of difference according to Deleuze, the understanding of time is revealed by means of Deleuzian comprehension of repetition and Bergsonian notion of duration. Throughout the thesis what is virtually hidden beneath the arguments, what is common in both philosophers finally is exposed as the concept of becoming. For Deleuze, whose philosophy of time is certainly dependent on Bergson, time creates a renewed conception in order for subject to be an individual as the state of permanent becoming. And an individual which is qualified as a state of becoming, is the memory of time where the latter is an infinite virtuality.

Shaw, Alistair Neil. "Memory patterns and the dream narratives of Matthew 1-2." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2017. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/8167/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to explore the cultural background of Matthew’s dream narratives and in particular to try and establish whether the literary practice underlying them is closer to that of OT or Graeco-Roman literature. This will be done by looking at the ways in which the dreams were remembered and transmitted, analysing the text in search of “memory patterns”, devices used in oral and semi-literate societies with the aim of helping people remember a poem or a narrative. Many of these techniques use sound (e.g. alliteration, assonance and rhythm), but some engage with the structure of the material; occasionally an image might be applied to aid memory. Thereafter dream reports from a variety of other ancient sources will be analysed to reveal the memory patterns which underlie them. Subsequently the results will be compared, with attention focused on the few devices which are culturally specific and elsewhere noting the frequency with which devices are used as authors typically express themselves. The outcome will be to identify the cultural background within which the Matthean dream narratives emerge. The thesis will take the following shape. After an introductory chapter, there will be the literature review, followed by a chapter on methodology. The method used in the analysis of dream narratives is new and will provide a novel interpretive approach to this section of Matthew. Chapters on memory, orality and rhetoric, Matthew, and a comparison of his text with dream narratives in other literature will follow. Finally there will be a conclusion. In this thesis I argue that the Matthean narratives have greater affinity to Jewish material and OT in particular than to Graeco-Roman literature. The data gathered in the course of research also allows for other comparisons. Of particular interest are comparisons between the writers of OT and those of Hellenistic background and between Josephus and both the groups just mentioned. Several contributions are made to scholarship. Arguably the greatest of these is the methodology employed in the thesis. I also introduce the concept of ‘translation distortion’, which affects memory where an account of the past is originally expressed in a different language. I introduce comparison of Matthew’s use of oral sources with similar use in Herodotus and Pausanias, the latter living in the second century CE and his work rarely applied to NT studies.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to assess Turkish squatters, namely &lsquo
gecekondu&rsquo
over the image in cinema in terms of a visual urban archive. In order to analyze this representation in cinema as an urban image, both the cinematic production and urban theoretical approaches about migration and gecekonduzation process are discussed in order to find out the parallelism between the stories of gecekondu in these two fields, and to crosscheck the cinematic image of gecekondu. Therefore, the study is held in accordance with the epochs due to the break points of the history of the phenomenon. The movies are analyzed through a critical discourse analysis after the depiction of each epoch. Finally, the picture of the phenomenon is compared with the actuality of the epochs, academic framework and the cinematic image with the purpose of revealing the cinematic memory about it.

Altenberg, Blake. "In the Shadow of Shuri Castle: The Battle of Okinawa in Memory." Chapman University Digital Commons, 2019. https://digitalcommons.chapman.edu/war_and_society_theses/2.

Full text
Abstract:
The memory of the battle of Okinawa was shaped by politics. The memory of the battle for Okinawans emphasizes war crimes committed against them and the devastating impact that was inflicted upon their peaceful island. Their emphasis on sole victimization led to other Okinawan narratives being either downplayed or outright denied. To remove American bases off their island, gain recognition for Japanese atrocities plus reparations, the Okinawans portrayed themselves as a peaceful people that were the sole victims of the battle of Okinawa. The United States glossed over the crimes committed by the Japanese on Okinawa and Asia to use Japan as a bulwark against what they perceived as communist aggression in Asia. To solidify this new alliance, the United States promoted reconciliation instead of punishment. In doing so, they willingly forget atrocities committed by the Japanese against Asian nationals. Americans also remember the battle in conjunction with the dropping of two atomic bombs and to justify their morally superior position to the Soviet Union, promote a more complex picture of the decision to use the bombs. This included discussing how Okinawa changed the American leader’s perspectives on a mainland Japan invasion. As a result, has become increasingly difficult to separate Okinawa and the bombs because of their temporal closeness. The Japanese tend to remember the battle as a heroic last stand and emphasize sacrifice to inspire future generations partly out of fear that Japanese youth have gone soft, ultimately demonstrating that Japan has not fully come to terms with her memory of the Second World War.

Ahmed, Nova. "Parallel Algorithm for Memory Efficient Pairwise and Multiple Genome Alignment in Distributed Environment." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2004. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/cs_theses/2.

Full text
Abstract:
The genome sequence alignment problems are very important ones from the computational biology perspective. These problems deal with large amount of data which is memory intensive as well as computation intensive. In the literature, two separate algorithms have been studied and improved – one is a Pairwise sequence alignment algorithm which aligns pairs of genome sequences with memory reduction and parallelism for the computation and the other one is the multiple sequence alignment algorithm that aligns multiple genome sequences and this algorithm is also parallelized efficiently so that the workload of the alignment program is well distributed. The parallel applications can be launched on different environments where shared memory is very well suited for these kinds of applications. But shared memory environment has the limitation of memory usage as well as scalability also these machines are very costly. A better approach is to use the cluster of computers and the cluster environment can be further enhanced to a grid environment so that the scalability can be improved introducing multiple clusters. Here the grid environment is studied as well as the shared memory and cluster environment for the two applications. It can be stated that for carefully designed algorithms the grid environment is comparable for its performance to other distributed environments and it sometimes outperforms the others in terms of the limitations of resources the other distributed environments have.

Abstract:
Harold Pinter&rsquo
s concern with memory and the verification of the past have been ever-present since his early writings. Although these themes have been explored by Pinter in his early works, they have become dominant in his interim plays, which have been named by critics as his memory plays. In these plays, the characters evoke the past to such an extent that the past virtually co-exists with and influences the present. The characters&rsquo
recollections of the past may be real, or they may be partially or even completely altered during the process of remembering. However, since verification of the past is impossible, whether these memories are real or confabulated remains unknown. The motives underlying these characters&rsquo
utilization of memories deserves investigation. This paper ventures to examine the reasons why the characters in the memory plays exploit recollections of the past. It focuses on the characters&rsquo
use of memory with the aim of asserting and perpetuating identity and existence, of exerting dominance over others, and of coping with their dissatisfaction with the present. To this end, the characters in Pinter&rsquo
s Landscape, Silence, Night, Old Times, and No Man&rsquo
s Land will be studied respectively.

Gatlin, Patricia K. "Severity of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Working Memory, and Self-care." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/222911.

Full text
Abstract:
Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory was used to inform hypotheses of associations between perceived severity of illness, working memory and self-care among adults (>45 years of age) with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Working memory capacity was examined as a foundational capability using Orem's theory. Measures include the modified Diabetes Care Profile section on Health Status Composite (HSC) providing information on severity of illness, the Working Memory Index (WMI) from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-III), the Self-Care Inventory Revised (SCI-R) and hemoglobin A1c. Sixty-seven adults with a mean age of 62.9 years who were primarily Caucasian (92.5%) were involved. There were 30 men and 37 women. Mean body mass index was 35.11 reflecting the majority of participants were obese. Findings indicate that HSC is significantly associated with WMI (r = .54, p < .01) and associated with both indicators of self-care, the SCI-R and HgA1c (r = .23, p<.05, r = -.37, p < .01). Working memory was examined as a mediator between severity of illness and the indicators of self-care (SCI-R and HgA1c) with no evidence for mediation. Findings are discussed in relationship to Orem's Theory of Self-Care Deficit.

Gaddipati, Surendra. "Characterization of HfO2 Films for Flash Memory Applications." Scholar Commons, 2004. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/1040.

Full text
Abstract:
The scaling of integrated circuits requires the use of alternative dielectric materials as the replacement for silicon dioxide in the submicron devices. The scaling limit for silicon dioxide used in MOSFETs is 1.2nm and the Oxide Nitride Oxide (ONO) stack used in flash memory applications is 13.0nm. The use of alternative dielectrics with high- κ value will alleviate the problem of charge retention and also would help to decrease the programming voltage in case of flash memory cells. Many alternative high- κ dielectric materials such as TaO2, TiO2, Al2O3 etc., have been examined for this purpose previously. Recently the metal oxides such as ZrO2 and HfO2 have been found to be viable replacements for the existing oxide. The high- κ value along with high bandgap motivates this replacement. A complete modeling of the reactively sputtered HfO2 films in the thickness range of 294Å to 480Å is attempted using the data obtained by one of the group members at the Sharp Laboratories of America, Inc. The IV and CV data is used to characterize the material properties and conduction mechanism in HfO2 films used as a control dielectric. The slope of the Poole-Frenkel plot is close to the theoretical value in the intermediate region however it starts to deviate at high field regions. Temperature dependent data also suggests that there are two types of vii traps active in the intermediate and high field regions. However the origin of these traps is not known. Temperature dependent data indicates that there is a rapid increase in the leakage current at elevated temperatures in the high field region further suggesting that the charge retention capability of the device would be adversely affected under such conditions.

Fross, Bradley K. "Splash-2 shared-memory architecture for supporting high level language compilers." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42064.

Full text
Abstract:

Modem computer technology has been evolving for nearly fifty years, and has seen many architectural innovations along the way. One of the latest technologies to come about is the reconfigurable processor-based custom computing machine (CCM). CCMs use field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) as their processing cores, giving them the flexibility of software systems with performance comparable to that of dedicated custom hardware. Hardware description languages are currently used to program CCMs. However, research is being performed to investigate the use of high-level languages (HLLs), such as the C programming language, to create CCM programs. Many aspects of CCM architectures, such as local memory systems, are not conducive to HLL compiler usage. This thesis proposes and evaluates the use of a shared-memory architecture on a Splash-2 CCM to promote the development and usage of HLL compilers for CCM systems.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines representations of feminicide victims in documentary film, novels, non-fiction, art, and graffiti and argues that these images express anxiety about they way women traverse and inhabit the geography of Ciudad Juárez, often giving precedence to the idea of the public female body as hypersexualized. In order to reclaim memory of the victims some cultural producers focus on the testimonial form in which victims’ families and other activists share their stories or construct informal memorials in the city; these remembrances later appear in works of non-fiction, film, and art, as markers of the process of creating and preserving memory. My dissertation analyzes such works as the documentary Señorita extraviada (2001) by Lourdes Portillo, the non-fiction work Huesos en el desierto (2002) by Sergio González Rodríguez, and the novel 2666 (2004) by Roberto Bolaño, among other cultural expressions, to show how feminicide victims and their families have been marked by and have challenged a pervasive public discourse about female sexuality.

Abstract:
By researching visual traditions of representing widows in relation to a social role, I explore how these may be related to processes of mourning and memory. My study begins with an historical reading and, along with an analysis of Renaissance widow portraiture, I trace the experiences of widows in the Cape of Good Hope. For the purposes of this thesis, I have selected images of widows to investigate memory-work particularly when speaking of loss. I re-view these memory processes through recent historical and art historical discourse with reference to contemporary South African artworks in order to understand how public memory is formed by way of visual documentation. These narratives around widowhood have informed the subject matter for my Master’s exhibition and shed light on my own experience as a widow. The interaction between objects and memory are of particular interest and manifest in my studio art practice.

Kim, Marie. "Manipulation of effector and memory cd8+ T cells via IL-2-antibody complexes." Diss., University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6157.

Abstract:
Due to the growing burden of malignancy and chronic infections, manipulating CD8+ T cell responses for clinical use has become an important goal for immunologists. CD8+ T cells have the unique capacity to recognize and kill tumor cells and intracellular pathogens. Thus far, failed or only minimally effective T cell vaccines against chronic pathogen infections and tumors have highlighted basic knowledge gaps for eliciting memory CD8+ T cell protection. Defining the immunological mechanisms that determine protective capacity and longevity in T cells will be critical to both therapeutic and prohylactic vaccine efficacy. My studies focus on strategies to manipulate effector and memory CD8+ T cell responses, including their mechanisms of action. Specifically, I show that dendritic cell (DC) immunization coupled with relatively early (days 1-3) or late (days 4-6) administration of enhanced IL-2 signals drive either effector or memory programs. DC + IL-2c administered 4-6 days post-DC transfer is shown to enhance Ag-specific effector CD8+ T cell responses; this approach is further explored in the context of a cancer immunotherapy, demonstrating effective control of tumor burden in multiple murine models of cancer. Temporal alterations of IL-2 signaling from day 4-6 to day 1-3 post-DC immunization is shown to increase memory potential and memory CD8+ T cell numbers long-term. Additional studies reveal CTLA-4-mediated down-regulation of B7-ligands on DCs after IL-2c treatment, demonstrating that weaker or more transient signaling through the CD28-B7 axis may favor memory CD8+ T cell programs. My work contributes valuable concepts in memory CD8 T cell generation to develop T cell vaccines that are both safe and predictable.

Abstract:
This thesis explores representations of the Holocaust in the Jewish Museum Berlin and the impact of commercialism on representational choices. Daniel Libeskind’s bold architectural design, which ultimately became the Jewish Museum Berlin, is in many ways a Holocaust memorial. By exploring curatorial strategies in regards to exhibition design and content, this thesis analyzes the debates within the Jewish Museum Berlin over the appropriate manner to represent the Holocaust to the museum-going public in contemporary Germany. This thesis argues that commercialism and the prospects of commercial viability played a significant role in curatorial decisions concerning exhibition narrative. Germany leads the world in acknowledging and exploring their past social crimes but, this thesis argues, an important opportunity for atonement was lost when the administration of the Jewish Museum Berlin privileged commercial success over the presentation of more difficult and uncomfortable, yet socially necessary, representations of the horror of the Holocaust.

Wild, Krista. "Neuroimmunoendocrine Pathology and Cognitive Function in Type 2 Diabetes." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2007. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/psych_diss/35.

Full text
Abstract:
Cognitive impairment among older adults with type 2 diabetes may worsen health outcomes via negative impact on compliance with medical self-care recommendations. Results of several previous studies indicate that cognitive deficits are present in older European American adults with type 2 diabetes under some conditions, particularly related to glucose dysregulation (as evidenced by high glycated hemoglobin, i.e., HbA1c). Despite the fact African Americans are disproportionately affected by diabetes and suffer significantly greater numbers of complications and more severe complications relative to European Americans, no published studies have examined cognitive functioning among older African American adults with type 2 diabetes. Further, markers of systemic inflammation have been associated with cognitive impairment in several conditions, but this relationship has not been examined in older adults with type 2 diabetes. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether: 1) cognitive deficits are present in older African American adults with type 2 diabetes, and whether the deficits are related to 2) glucose dysregulation and 3) systemic inflammation. Several cognitive domains, including verbal memory and executive functions, were assessed in 71 African Americans with type 2 diabetes who ranged from 60 to 80 years of age. Exclusionary criteria included dementia, depression, neurological disease, or brain injury. Also measured were HbA1c and two markers of systemic inflammation: C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Results showed that higher HbA1c was significantly associated with poorer performance on several measures of executive function and verbal memory measures that tap executive function. Higher IL-6 was significantly associated with slower motor function and higher semantic fluency. Higher CRP was significantly associated with improved performance on measures of phonemic fluency, psychomotor speed and mental flexibility/working memory, and fine motor dexterity, but only for those with extremely high levels of CRP; when those participants were removed from the analyses, CRP was inversely related to cognitive performance.

Seaton, Mary Lyell. "Intersensory memory ability for graphic symbols and word-name correspondences in grade 2 boys." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29370.

Full text
Abstract:
The tasks chosen for this study were intersensory memory tasks of graphic symbols and word-name equivalents. Each task involved a learning activity in which three pairs of graphic symbol and word-name correspondences were presented visually and auditorially respectively, employing the apparatus called the Caramate 3300. The subjects were 78 grade two Above-Average, Average and Below-Average readers from a school district in the Lower Fraser Valley in B.C. Following the learning session a response interval of five seconds or five minutes was imposed. After the response interval had expired, each equivalent of the pair was presented separately, either visually or auditorially. Each subject was required to respond with the corresponding counterpart, either auditorially or graphically, or matching the equivalents by pointing. The six intersensory memory tasks were scored for the number of correct responses on three items per task. The resulting scores were viewed as entries in a three-way ANOVA: Reading Ability x Response Interval x Presentation-Response Mode, yielding a 3 x 2 x 3 ANOVA with repeated measures on the second and third factors. All factors were fixed. Standard ANOVA procedures revealed a statistically significant Reading Ability x Presentation-Response Mode interaction. That is, a subjects ability to remember one-to-one graphic symbol and word-name correspondences was dependent on both his word recognition ability level and the type of presentation-response mode presented. A statistically significant Response Intervalx Presentation-Response Mode interaction was present as well. That is, for all subjects their ability to remember one-to-one word-name and graphic symbol correspondence was dependent on both the response interval imposed and the presentation-response mode presented. Some of the results suggested that a dual processing route was employed to access lexical information (McCusker, Hillinger, and Bias, 1981). In addition, the suggestion was put forth that what previously has been interpreted to be a memory deficit may be simply a reflection of a developmental hierarchy of this cognitive skill under different presentation-response mode conditions. The implications of the interactive roles of Reading Ability x Presentation-Response Mode and Response Interval x Presentation-Response Mode were explored relative to education and recommendations for future research were presented.

Crocker, Theresa Blom. "“A REMARKABLE INSTANCE”: THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE AND ITS ROLE IN THE CONTEMPORANEOUS NARRATIVE OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR." UKnowledge, 2012. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/history_etds/2.

Full text
Abstract:
The orthodox narrative of the First World War, which maintains that the conflict was futile, unnecessary and wasteful, continues to dominate historical representations of the war. Attempts by revisionist historians to dispute this interpretation have made little impact on Britain’s collective memory of the conflict. The Christmas truce has come to represent the frustration and anger that soldiers felt towards the meaningless war they had been trapped into fighting. However, the Christmas truce, which at the time it occurred was seen as an event of minimal importance, was not an act of defiance, but one which arose from the unprecedented conditions of static trench warfare and the adaptation of the soldiers to that environment. An examination of contemporaneous accounts of the truce demonstrates that it was viewed by the soldiers involved as merely a brief holiday, and that British army commanders generally ignored or tolerated the truce, eventually releasing orders preventing its continuation or reoccurrence but taking no steps to punish any of the men who took part in it. A review of the letters and diaries of truce participants sheds light on the event itself, while simultaneously challenging the orthodox narrative of the First World War.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the impact of type 2 diabetes among Indian and Pakistani migrants. Indians and Pakistanis living in the UK have a high incidence of type 2 diabetes and associated complications. Research is needed in order to understand factors that make it difficult to adhere to lifestyle advice about diet, exercise and medication. Drawing on data collected during a sixteen-month ethnographic investigation, this thesis explores Indians’ and Pakistanis’ perceptions of diabetes. The research revealed that Indians and Pakistanis related the onset of diabetes to processes of migration and settling in the UK as well as to stress and depression. In particular, holding on to negative thoughts and worries, were perceived by respondents as directly affecting the body by causing stress, depression and eventually illness. Struggles over diabetes control were also perceived as to cause distress. Specifically, respondents struggled to adhere to a healthy diet regime, since food, especially taste, played a crucial role in forming, reinforcing and demarcating social relations and in ensuring cultural continuity. In addition, respondents struggled to ‘adhere’ to their prescriptions of diabetes medications due to the uncomfortable side effects that they experienced, particularly in the stomach. Respondents, however, counteracted side effects by turning to alternative medications which were perceived to facilitate flow within the circulatory and digestive system. Thus, in spite of the difficulties that Indians and Pakistanis experienced in following biomedical recommendations for diabetes control, they still actively engaged in searching and using different treatments available to them in order to control the disease.

Abstract:
Pharmacology

Ischemic stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of morbidity in the United States. Cognitive deficits, specifically with respect to learning and memory, are a significant contributor to morbidity in stroke patients. Unfortunately, current treatment options must be administered within a thin therapeutic window of the initial infarct. This requirement results in less than 10% of stroke patients being eligible for treatment. There are currently no treatment options that are effective in the subacute phase of the disease and no treatments that are effective in reversing postischemic learning and memory deficits. We sought to examine the potential efficacy of the anti-inflammatory Cannabinoid-2 Receptor Agonist, O-1966, in attenuating infarct expansion and reversing cognitive deficits in the subacute phase of the disease using a photothrombosis model of stroke. Additionally, we sought to characterize the inflammatory response in photothrombosis. Mice were treated with repeated doses of O-1966 or vehicle and were sacrificed at 24 hours and 7 days to study the acute and subacute phase of the disease respectively. Learning and memory testing, immunohistochemistry, and polymerase chain reaction were used to measure the effect of O-1966 on infarct expansion, inflammatory gene expression, and cognitive function. In addition to PCR, flow cytometry was used to characterize the temporal dynamics of inflammation following photothrombosis. Our studies show that O-1966 is effective in the subacute phase in attenuating infarct expansion and proinflammatory gene expression and reversing learning and memory deficits.

Abstract:
Although responsible for their pupils' learning, most teachers do not have a clear understanding of the cognitive processes that mediate that learning. Working memory is one model that has proved to be useful in explaining the role of cognition in learning and there has been a lot of research exploring the nature of its involvement in complex tasks such as mathematics. This evidence suggests an important role for working memory, but is not consistent in determining which areas of working memory are recruited when performing the varied tasks that comprise mathematics.

Abstract:
Titanium-nickel is a unique class of material known as Shape Memory Alloy (SMA). A thermoelastic martensitic phase transformation is responsible for its extraordinary properties such as shape memory effect and superelasticity. The near equiatomic Ti-Ni alloys are the commercially most exploited SMAs because of the unique combination of these properties and superior ductility, strength, fatigue resistance and corrosion resistance. The properties of Ti-Ni SMAs are very sensitive to composition and the processing parameters. The properties of Ti-Ni SMAs can be modified to a great extent by choice of composition, mechanical working and heat treatment. Thermo-mechanical treatments are required to strengthen the matrix and improve the shape memory characteristics. Plastic deformation and subsequent annealing is the common way to improve shape memory properties. In the present study, Ti- 50 at% Ni wire specimens are produced and used for the investigation of the effect of different heat treatment and cold working processes on shape memory characteristics. To investigate the thermomechanical behavior of differently processed wire specimens, a fully computerized servo hydraulic thermomechanical testing machine was designed and constructed. Testing machine was capable to perform different types of tests that are selected by the user. It can both heat and cool the specimen automatically according to the testing sequence by applying DC current directly through the SMA wire or by sending liquid nitrogen into the cooling chamber. Temperature is measured by a K-type thermocouple directly mounted on the wire specimen with a glass tape. Force that is applied to the specimen is produced by hydraulic power unit with a double action cyclinder and it is controlled by a controller which takes the feedback from the loadcell and LVDT (Linear Variable Distance Transducer). During performig thermomechanical-tests all the data of loadcell, LVDT and thermocouple are collected by a data acqusition system integrated with a host computer that operates the program XPC Target. Ti-Ni alloy with equiatomic composition is prepared in vacum induction furnace. Specimen cast in the form of rod was then hot swaged. Subsequent to swaging, cold wire drawing, intermediate annealing at 500 &
#61616
C and water quenching was applied to obtain SMA wire with a diameter of 1.52 mm. Ti-Ni wires produced were subjected to four different processes. All the samples were initially solution heat treated at 925 &
#61616
C for 30 minutes prior to water quenching. Some of the samples were further treated by an intermediate anneal at 500 &
#61616
C. To see the effect of cold working
prior to intermediate annealing, 20 % or 40 % cold work was applied to another group of specimens. To study the shape memory characteristics of specimens subjected to the above mentioned processes, four types of test, namely constant stress free recovery test, constant strain free recovery test, constant stress constrained recovery test and constant strain constrained recovery test, were designed and applied cyclically. The tests have shown that the stress plateau observed in the first cycle of the tests disappear upon cycling and the shape memory characteristics improve and stabilize with cycling. Once trained by cycling, fractional free recovery was observed to reach to 100 % and recovery stress to reach 120% of the applied stress if shape recovery is prevented.
