Abstract:
Inkjet-printed memory cards have been developed previously by re-searchers at Mid Sweden University but, these did possess some limita-tions, as each resistive memory cell required one physical contact and the resistances were designed to be electrically programmed. This work overcomes the above limitations by developing chemically programmed printed memory cards and a PC connected memory card reader. Printed memory cards are inexpensive and are developed by inkjet printing the nano-silver ink onto the photo paper substrate. A matrix readout method is used to increase the num-ber of memory cells and, by using a chemical solvent, the resistances were programmed to the desired resistance values and, for which, each resistance value represents data on the cards, called, write once read many (WORM) memories. The memory card reader was developed to access the data (resistance value) of the memory card and also to trans-mit the data to a LabVIEW graphical user interface for displaying the resistance values. By using multiple resistance steps, in which each step represents a different state, it is possible to create a number of possible selectable combinations which can be programmed at a later stage for developing applications.

Abstract:
Credit card fraud has emerged as major problem in the electronic payment sector. In this thesis, we study data-driven fraud detection and address several of its intricate challenges by means of machine learning methods with the goal to identify fraudulent transactions that have been issued illegitimately on behalf of the rightful card owner. In particular, we explore several means to leverage contextual information beyond a transaction's basic attributes on the transaction level, sequence level and user level. On the transaction level, we aim to identify fraudulent transactions which, in terms of their attribute values, are globally distinguishable from genuine transactions. We provide an empirical study of the influence of class imbalance and forecasting horizons on the classification performance of a random forest classifier. We augment transactions with additional features extracted from external knowledge sources and show that external information about countries and calendar events improves classification performance most noticeably on card-not-present transaction. On the sequence level, we aim to detect frauds that are inconspicuous in the background of all transactions but peculiar with respect to the short-term sequence they appear in. We use a Long Short-term Memory network (LSTM) for modeling the sequential succession of transactions. Our results suggest that LSTM-based modeling is a promising strategy for characterizing sequences of card-present transactions but it is not adequate for card-not-present transactions. On the user level, we elaborate on feature aggregations and propose a flexible concept allowing us define numerous features by means of a simple syntax. We provide a CUDA-based implementation for the computationally expensive extraction with a speed-up of two orders of magnitude. Our feature selection study reveals that aggregates extracted from users' transaction sequences are more useful than those extracted from merchant sequences. Moreover, we discover multiple sets of candidate features with equivalent performance as manually engineered aggregates while being vastly different in terms of their structure. Regarding future work, we motivate the usage of simple and transparent machine learning methods for credit card fraud detection and we sketch a simple user-focused modeling approach

Abstract:
This work investigates the implementation of fuzzy systems using electronic currents. Such systems have been used before to solve several of problems of engineering applications, mainly involving process control applications. On more complex applications, the approximate reasoning of the fuzzy logic allows a way to understand the system behavior, allowing approximate interpolation among observed sets of input and output points. The implementation of a fuzzy system can be based in hardware, software or both. Typically, the software implementation uses a programming environment integrated with simulation, helping the designing work. The hardware implementations, traditional or evolutionary, can be analog or digital, mainly for high performance systems. This work aims to research an electronic implementation of a fuzzy system, capable to accomplish an adequate input to output mapping. The focus of this work is to design a platform with an analog-digital architecture based in a mapping table stored in a high capacity memory. Memories of the SD (Secure Digital) type were studied and used in the construction of a prototype of the electronic platform. Also studies were developed on the quantization, specifically to allow the reduction of the number of bits. With the accomplished implementation, it is possible to develop a fuzzy system in a simulated environment (Matlab), to configure the platform and to execute the fuzzy system directly in the electronic platform. The tests with the prototype was successful.

Car-commercials are something that many people come in contact with on a daily basis. This is a study on commercials for cars and is focusing on visual effects that are made in post-production. In this report we are trying to find out if and how visual effects in commercials for cars affect how the observer remembers them. The second subjects that we use in this report is popularity and we try to find out if and in that case how visual effects affect the commercials for cars popularity. We also investigated how frequently commercials for cars are showed on TV and how the visual effects are in them, it gives a better foundation to the other parts. The methods we applied were interviews, quantitative and qualitative content analysis of car commercials and also observation analysis of the 6 swedish TV-channels that shows commercials and have the most viewers, to get an idea how frequently these commercials are shown. The commercials that were applied in this paper was from late 2011 to early 2012. Interviews were made with people from the ages 16 to 76 years old with an equal distribution of sexes. We used 4 different commercials for cars in our interviews with 4 different degrees of the amount of visual effects. We analyzed 6 Swedish TV-channels that show commercials and that have the most viewers to get an idea about how frequently commercials for car are shown. The result of our research showed us that there was no connection between visual effects and popularity and that a larger amount of visual effects can increase the observers tendency to remember a commercial with 15 percentage. Most commercials from the studied period was without visual effects and 13,3% had a larger amount of visual effects

Abstract:
Most persons with a dementia are cared for in the home by family members who experience a broad and considerable amount of stress and whose caregiving careers may include planning for or initiating moves to memory care units (MCUs). This study examines the decision-making processes of primary informal caregivers regarding their care recipients' moves to MCUs. Grounded theory methods were used to collect and analyze data in two long-term care (LTC) facilities varying in characteristics including capacity, state licensure, fees, and resident profiles. Specific aims are two-fold: 1) advance an understanding of how primary informal caregivers of persons with a dementia made decisions for formal memory care, and 2) identify the important factors related to the decision-making process.

Tordoff, Sherley M. "Implicit memory and psychological disturbance in intensive care unit patients." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/7974.

Full text
Abstract:
Part One: Literature Review - Background: People who experience an intensive care unit admission may also experience post-traumatic stress and other forms of psychological distress. Such phenomena are only partly explained by the reason for admission. This distress can impede physical recovery and full participation in everyday life. Method: Using specified criteria, several databases were systematically searched and 279 abstracts highlighted; 215 articles were subsequently screened with a total of 104 articles being retained for specified quality criteria screening and critique. Results: Following critique, a total of 19 articles were retained for their relevance to the research question. Conclusions: The literature presented sufficient information to enable the investigator to propose a model describing the mechanism for PTSD development in ICU. Despite the extensive selection and screening process, most articles contained methodological flaws, however the investigator advocates that the information provided by the literature should not be dismissed and that future research might be directed towards replication of such research to RCT standards. Part Two: Research Report - Introduction: Despite the literature indicating that PTSD and other forms of psychological distress are significant problems for intensive care unit patients, the mechanisms involved in the development of PTSD remain largely unexplained. The investigator hypothesised that PTSD may occur as a result of implicit learning/classical conditioning/pairing of auditory stimuli to emotional distress experienced in the intensive care unit. Aim: To test the hypothesis that classical conditioning (pairing) of ICU environment sounds to patient distress or anxiety in the ICU which can then be detected after discharge as an emotional conditioned response to the presentation of a range of sounds (Train/Rain and ICU) sounds whilst monitoring skin conductance. Method: Thirty-three patients were recruited into the study and twenty participants were able to provide data to permit testing relating to the main hypothesis at 4-5 weeks post-ICU discharge. Results: A non-significant trend was noted in the relationship between presentation of ICU sounds and increased skin conductance responses, but the investigator was unable to find significant evidence of any relationship between skin conductance responses to ICU sounds and measures of psychological distress. There was significant evidence to suggest that the presence of memories as measured by the ICU Memory Tool at one-to-two weeks post-discharged from ICU were related to PTSD development. Conclusion: Patients demonstrating increased memories of feelings at one-to-two weeks, should be monitored carefully for any subsequent signs of PTSD and other forms of psychological distress. Future research should perhaps attempt to replicate the ICU sounds findings in a larger sample size with comprehensive recording of ICU sedation and memory phenomena details. Any attempts to find evidence of implicit memory using prompted recall questions should plan to capture this within 24 hours of stimuli presentation. Part Three: Critical Appraisal - Reflections regarding the research process and content are discussed.

Abstract:
Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory was used to inform hypotheses of associations between perceived severity of illness, working memory and self-care among adults (>45 years of age) with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Working memory capacity was examined as a foundational capability using Orem's theory. Measures include the modified Diabetes Care Profile section on Health Status Composite (HSC) providing information on severity of illness, the Working Memory Index (WMI) from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-III), the Self-Care Inventory Revised (SCI-R) and hemoglobin A1c. Sixty-seven adults with a mean age of 62.9 years who were primarily Caucasian (92.5%) were involved. There were 30 men and 37 women. Mean body mass index was 35.11 reflecting the majority of participants were obese. Findings indicate that HSC is significantly associated with WMI (r = .54, p < .01) and associated with both indicators of self-care, the SCI-R and HgA1c (r = .23, p<.05, r = -.37, p < .01). Working memory was examined as a mediator between severity of illness and the indicators of self-care (SCI-R and HgA1c) with no evidence for mediation. Findings are discussed in relationship to Orem's Theory of Self-Care Deficit.

Barha, Cindy. "Maternal care affects male and female offspring working memory and stress reactivity." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/32075.

Abstract:
Variations in maternal care affect the development of individual differences in learning and memory and neuroendocrine responses to stress in adult male offspring, but it is not known how variations in maternal care affect adult female offspring. The present study investigated the performance of adult Sprague-Dawley male and female offspring exposed to either low or high levels of maternal licking/grooming on a spatial learning and memory task (Experiment 1) and the effects of acute stress on corticosterone levels and spatial memory performance (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1 rats were trained for 24 days on the spatial working/reference memory version of the radial arm maze (RAM). In experiment 2, rats were trained on the same R AM task, exposed to an acute stress, and the effect of stress on corticosterone levels and subsequent spatial memory was examined. In experiment 1, adult female offspring of low licking/grooming dams had enhanced working memory compared to all other groups. In experiment 2, all groups of male and female offspring had enhanced working memory 24h after exposure to acute 2h restraint stress while reference memory was enhanced after stress in male and female offspring of low licking/grooming dams. Furthermore, female offspring of low licking/grooming dams showed the largest corticosterone response to the acute restraint stress compared to all other groups. Male offspring of low licking/grooming dams showed a flattened corticosterone response to stress. Thus variations in maternal care differentially affect working memory and stress reactivity in male and female offspring.

Auto Biography is a creative nonfiction memoir: A daughter, forced to move her unlovable, ever-combustible, wheelchairbound mother cross-country in an RV, attempts to come to terms with her via the automobiles of their lives. The story explores: 1) the universal dilemma of caring for aged parents––its stress, its pain, its sacrifice, and its dark humor; 2) memory––the "peeling back" narrative style working in the same layer upon layer way of memory, its non-linearity creating not so much a one-piece narrative but essay snapshots forming a family photo album view of this thing we call memory and this thing we call meaning; and, of course, 3) cars––their subtle yet surprisingly essential role in all our modern and post-modern lives.

Jan, Farida. "Effectiveness of recovery-focused mental health care of older people with memory problems." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/15486.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Dementia is a syndrome due to disease of the brain, usually of a chronic nature, in which there is disturbance of multiple higher cortical functions including Memory, Comprehension, Thinking, Judgment, Orientation, language and communication skills and abstract thinking. It is one of the most challenging disorders both in terms of prevalence and economic burden. There are currently approximately 800,000 people with dementia in UK and national cost is 17 billion per year. It is estimated that in next thirty years, number of people with dementia will increase to 1.4 million and the national cost will be over 50 billion. The exceptional advances in modern medicine in terms of prolonging life expectancy do not necessarily improve the care delivered to people with dementia. Dementia is a progressive condition where clinical recovery is not possible despite the discovery of cognition enhancing drugs. This belief leads to low expectations that tend to erode hope and foster indignity. Advances in treatment of Alzheimer’s disease have, however, stimulated new thinking and methods of service delivery. At certain stage of their illness, if not from the very beginning, personal, and social recovery becomes more meaningful for service users than their clinical recovery. Objective: To investigate whether recovery-orientated psychiatric assessment and therapeutic intervention enhances the wellbeing of people with memory problems and their family carers. Method: This study was a preliminary randomised control study. Patients were randomly allocated to recovery focus group or treatment as usual group acting as the control. Participants in the recovery focus group received a recovery-focused pre-diagnostic wellbeing assessment and counselling, diagnostic consultation with written feedback and post-diagnostic support over a period of six months. Participants in both groups were assessed using the WHO Wellbeing Index (WHO-5) as the primary outcome measure. The Mini Mental State Examination, Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia, EuroQol-5D and Zarit Burden Interview were used as secondary outcome measures. Written records of the narrative accounts of participants in the recovery focus group were also obtained. Results: 48 patients with early dementia were recruited and agreed to take part in the study. Out of these, 34 patients completed the study, of which 17 patients were in the recovery focus group and 17 patients were in the treatment as usual group (control). There was a significant difference between the groups in terms of greater improvement in wellbeing as rated by the WHO – 5 Wellbeing Index in the recovery focus group compared to the control group. The secondary outcome measures in the areas of cognition, quality of life and caregiver burden showed no differences between the groups. However, case histories from the recovery focus group identified the main areas of improvement in improved mood, increased social interaction, reduction in carer strain and/or burden and improved self-worth and/or confidence. Conclusions: This study shows that recovery focused care can enhance the wellbeing of people with mild to moderate dementia. The additional benefits perceived by the patients and their relatives /carers include improvement in mood symptoms, social interaction and confidence as well as reduction in carer burden and strain.

Abstract:
Care has seldom been linked with memory and the natural environment. Moreover young people have been largely absent from geographical explorations of memory and memories. This research seeks, in part, to fill these gaps by examining young people's memories and memory formation within frameworks of care and the natural environment. More specifically this research provides insights into socially and economically marginalised young people's memory processes as well as the multiple emotional geographies that are created in an affective web of care, other people and the natural environment. This thesis provides an original, critical examination of a third sector charitable organisation Country Holidays for Inner City Kids (CHICKS) and their respite breaks for disadvantaged young people between 8-15 years of age. 26 young people who attended CHICKS were interviewed in addition to multiple staff members, volunteers and referral agents. Additionally exhaustive observations were carried out on 17 different respite breaks. This thesis has three research aims. Firstly it sets out to examine how care experiences shape memory formation at CHICKS. Secondly, it explores how care produces space, particularly in the natural environment. And thirdly it examines what kind of emotional geographies does care produce. First and foremost this thesis contributes into geographies of care. Furthermore, it ties care into other scholarly niches. It offers a somewhat novel conceptualisation of nature as a space of care: a therapeutic landscape that extends beyond literal connections between the physical environment and feelings of well-being. This research also contributes to the geographical research on care and memory by integrating young people in such research, as well as by suggesting that memories can become a vessel for well-being. Overall, the unique research arena makes this an original piece of work thus adding knowledge to geographies of care on affective, methodological and theoretical levels. This research demonstrates flat ontology of care, fun, geographies of love and the natural environment can open up transformative spaces where identity processes and the self can be processed and re-processed. Ultimately, this all makes it possible for memory and memories to become an intervention; a tool against adversity that allows the young person to go to a better mental and emotional place.

Abstract:
Type 1 diabetes and associated hypoglycemia can result in verbal memory difficulties, yet the role of memory in daily diabetes self-care has not been evaluated for young adults. Subtests from two well-standardized memory measures were administered to 34 young adults with type 1 diabetes, aged 18-29, in this pilot study. Self-care behaviors were assessed through 24-hour diabetes care interviews, while HbAlc indicated metabolic control. Verbal associative memory uniquely accounted for 12% of the variance in blood glucose testing frequency (p p p p = .06. Single-trial verbal memory uniquely predicted 10% of the variance in metabolic control (p p < .05. Importantly, memory was the only significant predictor in each model, which indicates memory, rather than overall cognitive capacity or financial/educational resources, relates to self-care behaviors/health status. Memory, a novel factor not previously evaluated in the quest to better understand daily disease management for young adults with diabetes, is significantly related to central self-care behaviors and metabolic control. Memory predictors likely warrant additional research and clinical attention such that eventually, intervention studies might identify strategies or compensatory aids that could improve young adults' self-care behaviors and health status through facilitating better memory functioning.

Abstract:
This thesis is an inquiry into leadership in early childhood education and care (ECEC). Leadership in ECEC is a key feature of contemporary early childhood policy positioned as a prerequisite for quality improvement. The method of collective biography was drawn on to investigate how leaders in early childhood produce understandings about ‘good’ leadership. This inquiry problematises notions of ‘good’ early childhood leadership. A number of ironic categories emerged that hold together competing and at times contradictory discourses, allowing for more complex understandings of leadership.

Abstract:
The national aging trend suggests that population of those aged 65 and older will reach 83.7 million by the year 2050. With increasing age comes the growing possibility of one getting some form of dementia. The Alzheimer’s Association expects the number of American’s with dementia to triple from the reported 5 million cases in 2014 by 2050. With a rise in this cognitively impaired population there is reason to look closely at the needs of persons with dementia living in residential facilities and whether or not they are being met. The main focus of residential facilities is to provide aid with physical needs. However, research shows that all people also have social and psychological needs that need to be met to have the highest quality of life possible. Other research shows that residents with dementia spend a majority of their days with little to no social interactions. This study aims to uncover what verbal and nonverbal behaviors, if any, Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) in residential care facilities find to be important when interacting with persons with dementia. This study includes the analysis of 11 interviews of CNAs from local facilities and home health companies. Analysis of their responses uncovered very few observable verbal and nonverbal behaviors were actually discussed. What was more apparent was that attitudes and internal behaviors participants considered important drove the use of good verbal and nonverbal communication. Five themes were uncovered. They were: Observable Verbal and Nonverbal Behaviors, Valuing Personhood, Get on Their [Cognitive and Reality] Level, Be a Friend, and Compassion. Excerpts from the interviews are included for examples of how these themes presented themselves.

Abstract:
By the year 2050 it is expected that the number of older adults living with dementia will triple. With 42% of persons with dementia living in residential care, it is vital that we better understand how to maintain high psychosocial well-being for this population, in this setting. The objective of this study was to better understand psychosocial well-being in persons with dementia. The research team observed affect in clients with dementia (n = 22), as well as staff interactions with clients in a residential memory care unit for a total of 6999 minutes. The first purpose was to examine overall proportions of client affect and staff interaction types, both for the whole sample, and in more detail (assessing inter/intraindividual differences) for the five most observed clients. The second purpose was to identify whether proportions of positive affect in clients differed based on staff interaction type. The third purpose was to examine themes emerging from a review of field notes when staff interactions and/or client affect were noted. Analyses identified that the most observed affect type was neutral affect (53.1% of all minutes observed). The most common interaction type was neutral or no interaction (81.1% of all minutes observed). Positive affect accounted for 44.5% of observations, and positive staff interactions for 18.1% of the observations. There was very little negative affect (2.4%) and negative interactions (.8%) observed. When staff had neutral/no/negative interactions, clients were positive 36% of the time, whereas when staff had positive interactions, clients were positive 81% of the time (z = 28.84, p < .001). The review of the field notes identified themes and subthemes related to behavioral problems and other client problems, and the staff either responding to or ignoring these problems. The review also identified occasions when staff engaged clients beyond what was required of them. While quantitative analyses suggested low rates of negative staff interaction, the field notes highlight that sometimes no interaction (ignoring a client) is also problematic. This study suggests that positive social interactions between staff and clients may be important in maintaining positive affect and overall wellbeing in persons with dementia.

Abstract:

This study compared the efficacy of using online dementia training modules on both direct and non-direct care providers in long-term care settings and how this impacted their delivery of Person Centered Care (PCC), as well as their knowledge of caring for residents with a diagnosis of Alzheimer Disease (AD), dementia. Traditional educational opportunities for staff working specifically with demented residents inside Memory Care Units (MCU) were investigated, along with an alternative approach of training all staff (to include direct and non-direct care providers). The option of utilizing online dementia training modules for all staff was then evaluated by using an observational Person Centered Care tool, to see if education had made an impact on interactions between staff and the demented residents that they care for. This study utilized a single-group, repeated measures design to test a 10-week, standardized and computerized set of 10 interactive training modules in a 60-bed MCU . Fifty-one observations were made between MCU residents and staff and included in this study, employing a single-group pre-post-posttest design. The findings suggest that online dementia training modules may be beneficial for both knowledge and delivery of PCC to staff in MCUs who care for residents with a diagnosis of AD.

Abstract:
Infectious Disease & Immunity

CAR-T cell immunotherapy is a highly efficacious treatment for CD19-positive hematological malignancies, however, some patients are non-responsive for reasons that are not well understood. Clinical efficacy has been correlated with long-term persistence, a propensity that can be predicted by the differentiation state of transplanted cells. Despite this, decades-old methods for expanding T cells have not been updated to prevent the deleterious effects of excessive differentiation in CAR-T cells. Uncoupling proliferation and differentiation is a long-held goal in the field of immunotherapy with both cytokines and pharmacological approaches being implemented to dissociate these parallel processes. Histone methyltransferases rewire transcriptional programs in T cells and simultaneously regulate multitudes of genes, making them attractive targets for modifying the proliferation-differentiation axis. Despite this, only a handful of studies have examined their role in regulating the transcriptional programs of human CD8+ T cells. MLL4 (encoded by KMT2B) belongs to the six-member group of MLL histone methyltransferases. MLL1, a paralog of MLL4, has been implicated in regulating the maintenance of IL-4 and GATA-3 expression in TH2 CD4 memory T cell populations, however the function of MLL4 in human CD8+ T cells is unknown. We report a critical role for MLL4 in the proliferation and differentiation of CD8+ T cells. CRISPR-Cas9-editing of MLL4 uncoupled the processes of proliferation and differentiation, increasing proliferation but maintaining central memory T cell (TCM)-like populations, allowing for the production of increased numbers of TCM-like CD62L+CD45RO+ cells. Pharmacologically inhibiting the MLL4-Menin complex with MI-2 during T cell expansion enriched the frequency of minimally differentiated TCM-like CD8+ T cells. TCM-associated CD62L, CCR7, CD122 and CD127 surface markers were upregulated and early memory-associated transcription factor TCF7, LEF1, EOMES, and FOXP1 transcripts were increased. CD8+ CAR-T cells expanded in the presence of MI-2 responded earlier, while improving both tumor burden and survival in a NSG xenograft model of human leukemia. This finding has important translational impact in improving the persistence and proliferative capacity of CD8+ CAR-T cells.

Hickey, Andrea. "Improving Academic Outcomes for Children in Foster Care Through Tutoring or Working Memory Training: Three Randomized Trials." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/37622.

Full text
Abstract:
Children in care (e.g., foster care) are at risk of a variety of negative developmental outcomes. Of particular concern are their often poor academic outcomes. Indeed, children in care often have below grade-level performance on math and reading, increased rates of school drop out, and learning disabilities. Despite these difficulties, relatively little research has been conducted to try to ameliorate the problem. The present thesis, consisting of three independent randomized controlled trials (RCTs), sought to address the need for improved educational outcomes for children in care. The first RCT was an evaluation of a one-on-one tutoring program, TutorBright. Children in care were randomized to either a tutoring group or a waitlist control group and assessed on their math and reading skills, as well as on other educationally relevant domains (executive functioning, behaviour, and caregiver involvement in school-related activities), pre and post test. ANCOVA via multiple regression revealed that the children in care that had received tutoring, compared to the waitlist control group, made significantly greater gains in reading comprehension (Hedges’ g = 0.34), reading fluency (g = 0.16), and math calculation (g = 0.39). Moreover, executive functioning and self-reported symptoms of PTSD (for older children) were significant moderators of the effects of tutoring. No significant spill-over effects of tutoring were found. The second RCT, building upon previous RCTs by Flynn et al. (2012) and Harper and Schmidt (2016), evaluated whether a shorter version (i.e., 15 weeks) of a one-on-one Direct Instruction tutoring program, Teach Your Children Well (TYCW), was as effective as a longer version of TYCW (i.e., 25 weeks) on improving the math and reading skills for children in care. ANCOVA via multiple regression did not reveal any significant group differences in academic performance for any of the WJ-III subtests. Collapsing across the two intervention conditions, follow-up paired samples t-tests revealed significant improvement in Letter-Word Identification (Cohen’s d = 0.22), Reading Fluency (d = 0.36), Calculation (d = 0.38), Math Fluency (d = 0.47), Applied Problems (d = 0.30), and Broad Reading (d = 0.30) and Broad Math (d = 0.40) composite scores, suggesting that the 15-week and 25-week TYCW programs were equally effective in improving math and reading skills. Moreover, an attribute-treatment interaction analysis revealed that children with higher executive functioning benefited more from the shorter tutoring dosage for Calculation. The third RCT was a small pilot study that aimed to assess whether working-memory training (WMT) can enhance: 1) working memory capacity, in the short and longer term (i.e., immediately following the completion of WMT and 6-months later), 2) symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (i.e., inattention, hyperactivity, and executive functioning) in the short and longer term, and, 3) math and reading skills at 6-months post WMT. The findings from this study suggested that WMT can improve verbal working memory (g = 0.35) as well as visuo-spatial short-term memory (g = 1.10) in the shorter term but not in the longer term. Moreover, WMT did not have a significant impact on improving symptoms of ADHD or math and reading skills. Together, the results of this dissertation indicate that the math and reading skills of children in care can be improved via tutoring. The findings highlight the importance of providing children in care with effective academic supports in order to help them reach their full potential.

Abstract:
The following study describes an investigation into the impact of a life review intervention on individuals experiencing cognitive impairment who were living in care homes. Previous research into the effect of life review and reminiscence has been inconclusive. Various studies have found improvements in depression, selfesteem, and life satisfaction in individuals without cognitive impairment who have participated in these activities. Relatively little research has been carried out with people with cognitive impairment. Seventeen individuals took part in the study and were randomly allocated to one of two groups. Eight individuals entered the experimental group and participated in a structured, individual, life review intervention that culminated in the creation of a life story book. Nine individuals entered a no treatment control group and took part in the pre, post and follow up assessments only. Using four psychometric assessment scales, the two groups were compared on levels of depression, selfesteem, life satisfaction and autobiographical memory prior to, immediately after and at six weeks following completion of the life review. The quantitative results indicated a statistically significant improvement in the experimental group in depression and also in a particular aspect of autobiographical memory relating to the recall of personal factual information. Life satisfaction and self-esteem remained relatively stable throughout the study. Various limitations and strengths of the project anfl intervention model are discussed, as are a number of issues to consider when car7ing out this form of intervention with this population.

Abstract:
This is an educational design project exploring how prehospital care training can be altered to improve mental proficiency for emergency medical professionals.  The London Air Ambulance performs a complex life-saving procedure known as REBOA (Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta) on the roadside; the only emergency medical service to do so worldwide. Teams consisting of a doctor-paramedic pairing are required to perform at their peak in extreme environments, making training for such circumstances crucial. As a result, this project strategically maps current mental processes into a framework, identifying multiple design opportunities to approach chaotic accident scenes. The framework acts as the basis for defining a curriculum, which, using Instructional Design principles, develops into a learning programme that highlights how learners experience training activities to modify communication habits and on-scene behaviour. A three-part toolkit embodies this learning programme, functioning as a sensory guide to explicitly direct attention at pre-, mid- and post-procedure interaction events between team members.

Abstract:
Medical error and patient safety have become important issues. It is clear that medical error is more influenced by systemic factors rather than human characteristics. Communication patterns, in particular interruptive communication, maybe one of the systemic factors that contribute to the burden of medical error. Objective: An exploratory study to examine interruptive communication patterns of healthcare staff within an intensive care unit during ward rounds. Methods: The study was conducted in a tertiary hospital in Sydney, Australia. Nine participants were observed individually, for a total of 24 hours, using the Communication Observation Method (COM). The amount of time spent in conversation, the number of conversation initiating and number of turn-taking interruptions were recorded. Results: Participants averaged 75% [95% confidence interval 72.8-77.2] of their time in communication events during ward rounds. There were 345 conversation-initiating interruptions (C.I.I.) and 492 turn-taking interruptions (T.T.I.). C.I.I. accounted for 37% [95%CI 33.9-40.1] of total communication event time (5hr: 53min). T.T.I. accounted for 5.3% of total communication event time (56min). Conclusion: This is the first study to specifically examine turn-taking interruptions in a clinical setting. Staff in this intensive care unit spent the majority of their time in communication. Turn taking interruptions within conversations occurred at about the same frequency as conversation initiating interruptions, which have been the subject of earlier studies. These results suggest that the overall burden of interruptions in some settings may be significantly higher than previously suspected.

Abstract:
Reducing racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare are ongoing concerns. A paucity of data on healthcare seeking behavior among older Black women has hampered efforts to make culturally responsive healthcare services available to this population. Little is known about how older Black women's expectations and perceptions of care affect their patterns of health behavior. This study explored sociocultural contexts of health behavior with fifty Black women, aged 40 and older, in Tucson, Arizona by examining what prompts these women to seek services, identifying key factors affecting their access to and utilization of healthcare, documenting their experiences in healthcare settings and how these interactions influence their healthcare-seeking behavior. If effective healthcare service access and utilization are to be encouraged among older Black women, an informed understanding of the role cultural difference plays is essential. This research has three purposes: to provide a forum for discussion of culturally relevant strategies and models for prevention of disease and promotion of wellness in Black communities; to provide perspectives on older Black women's health issues for policymakers and administrators in public health sciences; and to gain insight and document reasons for selected health behaviors among this population. Research funding from the NIH/ NIA has helped to establish this small multi-disciplinary data set on a specific race, gender and age sub-population group for future research and development of community resource partnerships; including public health education and effective healthcare service delivery with intervention / promotion efforts targeting older Black women.Findings: Older Black women's poorer health status reflects the cumulative effects of inadequate health care due to various discriminatory experiences and their mistrust of the health care system. Mistrust, expectations of racial bias, perceived cultural insensitivity, and lack of effective communication within healthcare settings were found to be barriers to their healthcare-seeking behavior. Neither healthcare providers nor older Black women can address these issues alone. Working towards more trusting relationships within healthcare settings is critical in beginning to address avoidable inequities in health status experienced by older Black women. This research is applicable to such disciplines as Sociocultural/Medical Anthropology, Health Education, Public Health, and Africana/Ethnic Studies.

Abstract:

Abstract:
There is little known about the current state of professional development and continuing education practices for empowering activity professionals to better enhance environmental enrichment in long term care. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the activity professional's perceived role and best strategies for professional development to enrich the long-term care environment. The study used social cognitive theory as its theoretical framework to develop research questions focused on the views of activity professionals concerning professional development and continuing education to support care for long-term care residents. Using a narrative approach, 9 activity professionals were recruited through networking at the 2015 NAAP Education Summit in Kentucky, LinkedIn, and snowball sampling. Eligible participants who provided informed consent were interviewed by phone from August 2015 to February 2016. Data were analyzed using both hand coding and NVivo 10.0 software. Results showed the value of relevant certifications and the importance of training in a range of topics, especially dementia care. Connection to others and the environment emerged as key themes. This study is significant because it explores professional development in the long-term care environment, which can facilitate positive social change to provide the elderly, especially those in cognitive decline, with a comforting environment for special needs. This study contributes to the knowledgebase to inform the development of educational and training opportunities for activities professionals, especially those caring for individuals with severe / end-stage dementia.

Flash memory cards provide the speed, reliability and ruggedness necessary for recording in the harsh environment. It has no moving parts and are able to withstand high shock and vibration. Since the cards use non-volatile flash memory, they retain their data during breaks in power unlike many other high-speed memory card have the possibilities on losing data. Tape recording systems previously used song had to be discarded because of their temperature, shock and vibration limitations. Flash memory cards deliver the necessary efficiency and reliability for this severe operating environment. Therefore, Flash memory Card industry has been playing an important role in the economic development worldwide. It is interesting to do a study by the point of view from Taiwan buyer to gain a deeper understanding of the success secrets of the industry. Based on the trend of all Flash memory card and core venders market development strategy, also, taking into consideration alliance relationship and geographic factors, this research tried to look into the industry of Flash memory card and the trend of future of Flash memory card industries worldwide. Flash chip industry is quite different from Flash card market. Through this conceptual structure, this research is trying to understand how those factors, including information searching, organization factors, environment factors and the background of each participator, will influence the Flash industry. And then Flash memory card makers how to influence the growing process on selecting the right Flash card and Flash chip provider. The most important part, what kind of strategy of Flash memory card venders out of the major top five can have to the Flash chip and Flash memory card business successfully.

In 2002, four of Taiwan’s DRAM module manufacturers are ranked in the top ten in the whole world DRAM module manufacturers. Obviously Taiwan is already the most important production location of the DRAM module in the world. Since DRAM and Flash Memory are both IC memory, and both flash memory cards and DRAM modules are produced with SMT process, the two industries seem to demand for the same core competence. In fact, quite a few Taiwan’s DRAM module manufacturers have already engaged themselves in the emerging memory card market, expect to be able to transfer their good fortune in DRAM module to this new area. It may seem reasonable that Taiwan's DRAM module manufacturers could succeed in the emerging memory card market by simply adopting the technology of DRAM. However this simple extrapolation may not hold if they fail to see the critical difference between these two industries. This research compares the DRAM module industry to the memory card industry. Having Porter's five force analysis serve as the foundation of industry's environmental analysis, it distinguishes the critical difference between these two industries. And then an inference on the competitive strategies of Taiwan's DRAM module manufacturers is drawn based on our analysis. It is clear that Taiwan’s DRAM module manufacturers have not developed any rights on related intellectual property, neither have done anything in determining the standards of card formats, they do not hold technical edge over competitors. The only advantage they seem to have is the efficiency in manufacturing and supply chain management. This research shows that with mass production capability as their chief competitive advantage, they will obtain OEM orders and hopefully gain cash position in order to support and develop USB flash storage products for Taiwan’s market. They will not, and cannot compete with SanDisk and Sony in inter-national market. As for MMC and SD memory card use in cell phone market that has the greatest potential in the future, they do not even possess the key manufacturing capacity. The size of these cards demands for IC packaging as the main method of production, instead of SMT on PCB. And none of the current DRAM module makers possess such capability, for it is traditionally an area dominated by large IC packaging subcontractors, many even larger then themselves, without either technical advantage or market channel control, may pose great threat to three DRAM nodule players. Because, in this case, big international players such as SanDisk can combine directly with IC packaging house to produce and market the products. These does not seem to be a place for others.

Due to the change of technology, consumers focus on digital products promoted gradually, and the progress of industry''s technology of the semiconductor improve constantly, so the application of NAND Flash is multifarious, especially in the market of flash memory card. In the Flash memory card industry are facing the challenge of low–profit environment as a result of intensified competition, the good old days have gone forever. Such change in the market environment, in a way, is testing the competitiveness in business strategy of the manufacturers. On the basis of Hotelling linear city model to study the persuasive advertising investment strategy of two firms separately in the mature oligarch market .Also creatively established a model to analyze advertising persuasive effect on consumer’s willing of purchase. Finally, this article attempts to reveal the competition relationship between two corporations by using game-theory models while optimizing total profit as an objective function. The implementation results provide an analytical methodology to deal with duopoly competitiveness while considering various scenarios.

Digital personal portable consumer electronics, the booming of IA concept and the needs to data storage anytime and anywhere inspire the rapidly growth of the huge market of Flash Card products. The market attracts quite a few manufacturers’ interest and attention, especially to most of the module manufacturers with high buying power and facilities of manufacture excellence. It is also a trend for module manufacturers to diverse the high-risk saturated module business into high-growth Flash market. The case study is the top and worldwide well-known independent module manufacturer. However, due to some factors she was two to three years late entering into the Flash market than competitors. In this fast-changing and short life-cycle electronic industry, after deep and intensive interviews to comprehend the competitive advantages of this module manufacturer, Porter Value Chain theory as the tool to analyze the value chain activities, cost prevalence and the sources of dissimilarity, the deployment of competency strategy in Flash market is achieved. From the analysis, the case study manufacturer is facing not only other competitive module manufacturers; but also NAND Flash semi-conductor manufacturers like Samsung and Toshiba who are Flash product manufacturers as well, even the Flash product IP patent owner Sandisk, Without the prevalence of these multi-national semi-conductor manufacturers that own the unlimited component supply resource and patent owner Sandisk, the case study manufacturer still plays an important role through the lowering cost and finding out the dissimilarity to compete with. The analysis reveals that the Flash business development and growing of the case study manufacturer utilizes the same accumulated module successful experiences: the just-in-time demand and supply, flexibility and computerization operation process together with the close and tight relationship with suppliers; most of all the NAND Flash the semi-conductor manufacturers. It helps her as the main and liable customer. It is crucial in Flash business as the huge market demand induces shortage year round, the NAND Flash availability and stable supply becomes the key factor the fast market exploitation, market share and gain of high profit margins. Taiwan is the core of Flash Card – NAND Flash. Presently Taiwan industry is lack of the technology and environment to manufacture the NAND Flash, yet Taiwan industry dominates in manufacturing and lowering the cost. In the future NAND Flash could follow the track of DRAM in the past that over supply makes it as a “commodity”. At that moment, Taiwan could be an important base of NAND Flash manufacturing.
