ABSTRACT: Nowadays, tourism is one of the main activities in Portugal. Paradoxically, we have been witnessing an evolving relation between tourism and the rehabilitation of buildings, justified by the return to the historical centers, moved by the progressive preoccupation with the built patrimony, with high memorial value. In "O Património e a reinvenção do Turismo Cultural", we seek to develop a reflection that relates the project with the historical area and its landscape, enhancing the city's identity and collective memory. The rehabilitation of an emblematic palace in the city of Santiago do Cacém - Condes de Avillez Palace - is proposed, along with the construction of a new building complex, capable of hosting programs in the hotel sector, with a simple but refined architecture, which can be an asset to the city influencing the way we live in it. Theoretical concepts find their resolution in urban and architectural design, which aim to develop a project in which the memory of the building and the environment does not simply result in the preservation of the architecture, but in the conjugation of the contemporary with the old. As an architectural proposal, a reinvention project is presented in order to obtain an object with a referential character in the city, more precisely in the historical center, through the valorization of the existing culture and territory - natural and patrimonial - linking to the local identity and memory.

ABSTRACT:The intention is to perform an intervention that sustains the concepts of Memory, Monument, Heritage and Rehabilitation, based on the harmony between the old and the new. The purpose of this document is to register a commentary of theorical basis about the Aveiro’s Dukes Palace and its estate at Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, in order to justify a project proposal. The reflection starts with the concept of monument, through a public perspective, to achieve the collective memory conservation. The theme of nowadays rehabilitation will be discussed, evidencing the risk of inadequate argumentations, the copying of old styles and the problems that arise during this type of interventions. The rehabilitation will be studied through architecture treaties that this matter required through time and examples where restoration, requalification and conservation were applied. This will be followed by a site urbanistic-architectural analysis for the understanding of the primitive affinity between the palace and territory, the palace and its estate, and between its interior spaces. This architectural proposal emphasizes its main existing object, its components, as parts of the Villa’s typology, and its adaptation to a new architectural ensemble, which is intended to be inseparable.

Full textiragan Palace at the age of four as Fatma Sultane&rsquo
s, (daughter of Abdü
lmecid) maid of honour and witnessed closely the daily life in the Harem for more than twenty years. Her memoirs, dating 1920, are the earliest examples written by a court member or, in other words, by an insider. They are particularly important for documenting not only the Imperial Harem as a disappeared socio-cultural institution, but also its architectural setting as part of the Old Ç
iragan Palace, built in 1841 but demolished in 1857. Accordingly, this thesis seeks to reconstruct the Old Palace and its Harem architecturally and culturally by reading these memoirs in parallel to the related historical and theoretical literature. In so doing, it discusses whether the memoirs perpetuate or challenge the orientalist discourses.

Full textHow can we preserve a threatened heritage? Should we neglect it and lose our memory of national and local history? Can tourism be a solution to preserve architectural private wealth? This thesis explores several fields, such as tourism, heritage, architecture and literature in order to determine what can be the future of architectural wealth in rural areas. Using various sources (interviews, field research, guides, video, media, social networks, etc.), and starting with an overview of the situation, we have arrived at the following question: can tourism be a solution to preserve architectural private wealth? Our study focuses on three Portuguese-speaking regions (Vale do Paraíba – Brazil, Ponte de Lima – Portugal and Goa - India), where many palaces were built until the 19th century. After a period of magnificence, their importance gradually faded in collective memory. They stand as witnesses of our history. Nowadays, it is more and more difficult to maintain these buildings. It is interesting to compare these three areas: their common point is the disappearance of their heritage, but they differ greatly in their tourism policies. The first part of this study describes the architectural heritage in Portuguese-speaking areas, and explains how it grew up and why it is now in danger. The second part analyses solutions offered in terms of rural tourism, and how family memory is thus preserved
Hirzel, Lara.
Full textThe thesis Mind Palaces, from Memory Theatre to Imaginary Spaces is composed of three films, one video installation and two scripts. These works focus on questions of places and their memory. From ancient rhetorical mnemonics to the use of flashbacks in film editing, this study covers the fields of photography, fine arts, literature and film, in order to come up with its own artistic interpretation of philosophical concepts. Each project develops its own way of broaching the representation of a dreamt-up, imagined space; be it relating to the "genre" of proposals, to the role given to the audience, or, at the very heart of the films, to the multi- plicity of subjectivities of the characters. Thus, the film Remains evokes Saint Augustine and the art of memory, whilst Mermaids plays with various editing and reminiscence effects. Secret Passages links real places and fictional spaces through the in situ installation in the village of Binic, and the act of wandering therefore beco- mes another way of replaying the discursive journey in the method of loci. As for the Without Percival script, based on Virginia Woolf's The Waves, it differentiates between multiple points of view on a given moment shared in a single place. In a different way, Atoms plays with the whale as a symbolic place against which imaginations wash up and diverge. Finally, by using the idea of an interior space within the fic- tion itself, the Mind Palaces project provides a way of updating ancient philosophical and theological theories, based on a modern variation of Saint Teresa of Ávila. This last script combines a number of concepts that are frequently alluded to, revisited and mentioned in Christianity, and are here distorted, transformed and used in the fiction itself

The next revolutionary human-computer interaction will explore ubiquitous technology to reflect natural human needs and to support human life in reality. One of the most important applications for human-computer interaction is human memory assistance. It is argued that future should be smart enough to store and retrieve human memory, which can link human emotion to physical context. This paper presents a conceptual framework with a matrix of ubiquitous computing applications. The thesis explores user interface of spatial memory carrier with wearable augmented reality, allowing representing emotional human memory in smart space. Users can perceive virtual information in the physical space directly through embodied interaction with the wearable augmented reality device called “space-glass". Finally, the thesis concludes with a proposal of "space-glass" augmented reality device based on the idea of co-existence of virtual and physical experience. A prototype of space-glass has been implemented, linking the physical space with virtual memory information. Users can reload digital information represent emotional memory, and control the physical display of virtual memory remotely.

The purpose of this study was, by combining guidance from graduate school professors, graduate school research, and practical English teaching experience, to design and produce a set of memory training materials along with auxiliary aids and A.R (Augmented Reality) App software based on the theory of memory, memory palace techniques, and the basic theory of designing teaching aids, and to use these materials to teach English, thus increasing learners’ speaking abilities, their interest in English, and the effectiveness of their education. After teaching and learning from this set of memory training materials and the accompanying teaching aids, teachers and their students provided reviews, ideas for improving the materials, and suggestions for future studies of memory training materials, teaching aids, and App software. The memory training materials, teaching aids, and App software were all successfully created in accordance with the goals of this study. This project to develop the set of memory training materials was successfully introduced at the Yilan County Government Local SBIR Plan in 2014 , and was also elected to represent Yilan County at the Central Government SBIR Exhibition in 2014. Below are teachers’ and students’ opinions of the memory training materials after their use in a teaching trial, providing reviews, ideas about ways to improve the teaching materials, and suggestions for future studies of memory training materials, teaching aids, and App software. 1. Teachers’ and students’ experiences with and opinions of the memory training materials and accompanying aids after a period of trial use: 1.1 After the author explained the theories and learning goals of the memory training materials to the trial teachers for about thirty minutes, the teachers were able to use the materials and aids to teach their students mnemonics. 1.2 Students could operate the auxiliary aids and APP software to carry out memory training exercises. 1.3 The graphic and video files of the memory training materials allowed teachers to teach with multimedia, and helped students to develop their ability to think in pictures, thus increasing the effectiveness of learning and memorizing. 2. A review of the content of the memory training materials, and suggestions for ways to improve: 2.1 Problem: Students responded that the textbook was a little bit heavy. Solution: Reduce the weight of each page when printing the memory training materials in the future. 2.2 Problem: Teachers could not understand some units of the memory training materials and some of the teaching goals. Solution: The author should write up an introduction to the mnemonics language learning system, and an introduction to using the memory training materials, to help teachers more easily use the materials to teach students. 2.3 Problem: Applying teaching aids with the memory training materials during classtime will burden teachers. Solution: Review the timing of using auxiliary aids during mnemonics teaching. It is suggested that the memory teaching aids and puzzles be used after school to test the effectiveness of in-class learning, especially with students receiving individual counseling and remedial teaching after school. 2.4 Problem: Some first-time users did not know how to download the APP software and so on. Solution: Create a video which explains how to download, install, and use the App software. 3. Follow-up study suggestions for the future: 3.1 Extend the present study to produce different ranges and levels of memory training materials designed to improve English learners’ speaking abilities. 3.2 Combine the mnemonic aid with a wearable device in order to increase learners’ interest and increase the effectiveness of the memory training materials. 3.3 Develop App software with a simulator, along the lines of a shooting game with the goal being learning English, which can be used as an assessment tool.
Mercier, Martin.
Full textThis master explores the dynamism of the memory within writing. In the creation part, the character of Sam wanders in his memories, searching for his sister Lidie. It is a vain attempt, always to begin again since the memory, related to the consciousness, is unceasingly subjective and distorted, unable to give back an objective past. The figure of Lidie find to be the unattainable central point of a convolution, the cercle trajectory revealing the presence of the memory in the body of the text. The essay part discusses the question of the bond between the memory and the writing in Le Palace of Claude Simon. Taking up the idea of the triple present of St. Augustine, the past is then possible only in a present of the past, and this dynamism creates a circular motion while the character goes through his memories that he can only invest by the lens of a present. This reveals a text without any beginning or end, revolutionary, where the memory, rather than a return in time, is moving forward the text and becomes the present time of the writing.

Full textThis research is about the mediating practices of the guides, also known as cicerones, more specifically on the analysis of the historical discourse on tourism contexts, guided visits. The following questions conduct this research: How are the monuments presented to the persons who visit them? Who chooses which contents to present? Which are the interests involved? How do the audiences perceive the contents exposed and communicated? How do different persons - curators, historians, guides, visitors, etc. - contribute for the messages that are being transmitted? It is intended to analyse the transformation of the historical discourse into a tourism resource.

This work aimed to research and understand the importance of information and diagnosis in the rehabilitation project of Pombaline buildings in Lisbon. It also aims to demonstrate the importance of preserving old buildings and their historical values. The study begins with the concepts and reasons for rehabilitating old buildings. The concept of heritage and architectural conservation gained relevance especially in the nineteenth century, and developed throughout the twentieth century. Urban rehabilitation has as its main objective the improvement of the quality of the urban territory, satisfying the basic needs of the population and also preserving the historical values for future generations. The work carried out was based on three examples of old Pombaline style buildings in Lisbon. The former Ficalho Palace located at Rua dos Caetanos, nº18-20 and at Travessa dos Fiés de Deus nº102-108, in Bairro Alto; the building located at D. João da Câmara Square, 1-6, D. Pedro IV Square (Rossio), 62-68, and 1st December Street, 102-116, and the building located at Douradores Street, 2-14, and Conceição Street, 28-34. The three buildings mentioned above represent examples of heritage with historical value and also represent the different phases of the Pombaline movement. The study was carried out using material provided by architects who are developing studies for these buildings, namely designed surveys and various reports focusing in particular on historical aspects and the structural condition of the buildings. Knowledge of the sites was completed with visits to the buildings. It was possible to verify that the studied buildings were very modified over time and that the design methodology to be used in each case will necessarily have to be different. This study has revealed that, in addition to the exterior appearance of buildings, the interior of these buildings must be studied to understand which fragments are still original or valuable to be preserved.
