Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to present a systematic study of the genesis of memory through the most significant philosophical concepts and ideas. Therefore, the phenomenon of memory in socio-humanitarian knowledge in the article assumes a philosophical study of the results of social and humanitarian sciences, as well as their interdisciplinary nature in understanding the most important aspects of memory. The philosophical study of the phenomenon of memory sets the task of clarifying the subject area of research as an object marked by this concept throughout its development. The study of the phenomenon of memory explains our attention to the history of its perception in philosophy, clarifying the stages of the subject organization of the field of memory, i.e. such areas of research and subjects that later turned into a research source for the development of the philosophy of memory. The stated approach allows us to explain the main categories that define the categorical context, i.e. what is designated by the problem of “memory”, how and which subject area of memory research is represented in its genesis. At the same time, the philosophical interpretation of the concept of memory requires the study of methodological approaches and views that help philosophers and researchers to represent the distinctive meanings of memory concepts defined in various philosophical or sociohumanitarian studies, and how this representation of memory served the practical activity of science. The analysis of the genesis of the research direction “memory studies” and the understanding of memory as an integral system contains the proposed classification of the structural stages of philosophical theory in understanding the nature of this phenomenon.

Abstract:
The article examines the concept of memory studies, which is a separate discipline that studies and analyzes memory issues. The phenomenon of memory is an important part of life, although not presented as a necessary condition of mental activity. Memory, the author notes, is a way for people to construct their past through books, movies, documents, ceremonies, and so on. In memory studies, memory arises in various aspects – collective, social, cultural, genetic, and historical. The reason for claiming a worldwide "memory age" is criticism of official versions of history, the return of memory to communities and peoples whose history has been ignored, the activation of various memorial events, and more. It is shown that a social and cultural construct collective memory retains the authentic past as its version and serves as a means to achieve certain goals. Collective memory is in constant change, which is nonlinear, irrational, and not always subject to logical analysis. New events and ideas affect the perception of the past, and patterns of interpretation of the past determine the understanding of the present. The relation between collective and individual memory appears as the relation between memory and history. The primary function of historical memory is to form an identity. The development of memory studies distinguishes the political, functional, cumulative memory that use the past to shape national identity. The context of historical memory includes the concepts of "oblivion", "custom" and "tradition" that help to identify the turning points of history as they are indicators of the emergence of a new society. Historical memory is a tool for using the past to achieve goals dictated by the current situation. Mobilizing memory and collective perceptions of the past has been an integral part of the political process in recent centuries.

While some scholars have argued that the research related to “Collective Memory” could be traced back to the 18th century or even earlier, it was not until the 1920s that Halbwachs systematically proposed characteristics of collective memory from a sociological perspective. From his works, the study of memory began to develop, and led to a boom in the 1970s, and the launching of the academic journal Memory Study in 2008. Collective memory has now become an interdisciplinary field gaining contributions from different professional perspectives such as literary criticism, psychology, sociology, historiography, cultural studies, and communication studies.

Abstract:
This paper provides an overview and discussion of the rapidly growing literature on organizational memory studies (OMS). We define OMS as an inquiry into the ways that remembering and forgetting shape, and are shaped by, organizations and organizing processes. The contribution of this article is threefold. We briefly review what we understand by organizational memory and explore some key debates and points of contestation in the field. Second, we identify four different perspectives that have been developed in OMS (functional, interpretive, critical and performative) and expand upon each perspective by showcasing articles published over the past decade. In particular, we examine four papers previously published in Organization Studies to show the distinctiveness of each perspective. Finally, we identify a number of areas for future research to facilitate the future development of OMS.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the transnational turn in the research of collective and cultural memory in the 21st century, reflecting the desire of scientists working within Memory studies to go beyond “methodological nationalism” and explore the formation and circulation of historical memory across borders. Based on the English-language literature of the 2000s—2020s, the author analyzes the emerging field of Transnational Memory studies from the point of view of the categorical apparatus, disciplinary features and research approaches. Having documented that discussions about the transcultural dimension of collective memory are present even in the works of the classics of Memory studies, the author shows that the efforts of their modern critics are driven by the attempts to conceptualize the memory of the Holocaust, World War II, colonialism and other events of the “difficult past”. The abundance of closely related concepts elaborated in recent years creates an illusion of competition in this field, but these concepts are often based on fundamentally different ideological and methodological settings, and if some of the concepts possess a certain empirical potential, others are completely normative. The author identifies six main research lenses within the current state of Transnational Memory studies — international, supranational, diasporic, mediatized, digital and, finally, global, associated with the problem of memory synchrony/simultaneity. At the same time, according to his conclusion, getting rid of the national perspective in understanding transnational memory is still far from complete, and the very fact that scientists look beyond borders indicates that such borders still exist.

Miller, Jo Ann. "Exploratory studies of prospective memory in adults." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30735.

Full text
Abstract:
Prospective memory refers to remembering to carry out an intended or planned action, such as keeping a doctor's appointment or telling a friend about an upcoming party. Despite its importance in everyday life, prospective memory has received little empirical or theoretical attention. Rather, much of the literature has focused on retrospective memory, that is, memory for information learnt in the past. The current literature on prospective memory addresses five aspects that are necessary for carrying out an intended action. These are (a) formulating the plan; (b) having the knowledge necessary to carry out the plan; (c) remembering the plan at the appropriate time; (d) carrying out the plan; and (e) remembering that the plan has been performed. The literature also raises three fundamental questions. Namely, whether prospective and retrospective memory involve different processes, whether self-report and behavioral measures of prospective memory are correlated, and whether prospective memory performance varies as a function of age. These questions were the focus of the exploratory studies presented in this dissertation. The first three studies involved the development of a memory diary, a memory questionnaire, and a metamemory questionnaire, respectively. These instruments were used in the fourth and fifth studies. Studies 4 and 5 also included behavioral measures of prospective memory and objective measures of retrospective memory. The fourth study examined how community-dwelling adults feel about, and use, their memory on a daily basis. In accordance with previous research, no age differences were observed on the behavioral measures of prospective memory. Moreover, performance on the self-report measures did not differ as a function of age. As hypothesized, age was correlated with performance on a retrospective memory task. The fifth study involved an extension and replication of Study 4, with the major addition being the use of several standard laboratory tests to assess retrospective memory. This study revealed several interesting findings. First, in contrast to previous studies, performance on some retrospective memory tasks was related to performance on some prospective memory tasks. Second, by and large, self-report and behavioral measures of prospective memory were not correlated. Third, performance on the prospective memory tasks (both self-report and behavioral) did not vary as a function of age, although performance ' on the retrospective memory tasks was clearly age related. The implications of this research are discussed.

Abstract:
The aim of the research is to examine the multiple spatial frameworks and materially manifested forms of memory by applying current memory studies theory to four areas of memorial experience: personal memory, civic memory, tourism and film. The thesis looks at memory practices based in the North East, particularly those that take place in Newcastle upon Tyne, and explores how the city is remembered in specific memory practices and institutions. Combining work in memory studies and cultural geography, the thesis highlights how memory is spatialized and is particularly concerned with the city that shapes, and is shaped by, memory and memory practices. Changes have taken place in the relationship between space, place and temporality that have affected memory and practices of memorialization. At first glance, the technologies we use and the spaces we inhabit can be interpreted as leading to a pervasive amnesia. The thesis challenges this assumption. It proposes that the concept of heterotopia provides a critical mode of reading memory spaces offering a more positive account of the way memory is currently being experienced. The thesis looks at how memory is realized in the fabric of the city and how the historical city itself is represented through the discursive practices of memorial public art, the museum and the cinema, creating a collective cultural memory. The particular contribution that this thesis makes is that it tests the explanatory power of the concept of heterotopia in relation to memorial sites and it applies memory studies to the city of Newcastle in a time of transition and renewal.

Abstract:
Quantum information processing has been developing rapidly in the last two decades as a way to overcome the limitations of classical electronics. Several components to generate, process and send quantum information are needed. In this context, optical quantum memories appear as principal components to communicate quantum information at long distances by overcoming the losses of the optical fibers in the so-called quantum repeater scheme. During the last decade several storage protocols to store quantum information have been proposed and tested. In this thesis, I present the Revival of Silenced Echo (ROSE) protocol implemented in an Er3+:Y2SiO5 crystal. This material is a good candidate for a quantum memory because of its transition in the C-band of the telecom wavelengths where the losses in optical fibers are minimized. In this work, I evaluate the ROSE performances with weak classical pulses. I measure efficiency, bandwidth and storage time which are the typical figures of merit for an optical quantum memory. Starting with a fixed bandwidth, I demonstrate experimentally a good efficiency. Additionally, I measure the bandwidth dependence of the protocol. For this latter, the dipole-dipole interactions between erbium ions appears as limiting factors. Finally, I implement the ROSE protocol with a few photons per pulse to show its potential as a quantum memory. I report good efficiencies with a moderate signal to noise ratio.I finish this work with a series of measurements in new materials (doped or codoped with erbium), to extend the processing bandwidth of Er doped samples compatible the telecom wavelength range

Chen, Yung-Nien. "Working memory in n-back tasks : ERP studies." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2007. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/3641/.

Full text
Abstract:
Three event-related potential (ERP) experiments investigated the spatial-verbal dichotomy (emphasized by Baddeley’s model of working memory), selective attention (emphasized by Cowan’s model), and sub-processes in n-back tasks. The studies provide a basis for further clinical research on Alzheimer’s disease. Experiment 1 studied the spatial-verbal dichotomy using n-back tasks with top-down control. It used identical stimuli in both spatial and verbal tasks, and was designed to eliminate interference from perceptual processes. The spatial and verbal tasks differed only in the instructions given before the tasks. Using a model of the task, sub-processes involved in n-back tasks were delineated and analyzed by difference waveforms of ERPs. Domain-specific lateralization was found in a shift sub-process but not in a replacement sub-process. Because information from the irrelevant domain could not be totally excluded by top-down control (which distinguished the spatial and verbal tasks), Experiment 2 recorded information from irrelevant domains. Interactions between irrelevant and relevant domains were found in ERP difference waveforms. Therefore, the results of Experiment 2 suggest that selective attention is unable to exclude interference from the irrelevant domain. Following this conclusion, Experiment 3 adopted a data-driven (bottom-up controlled) methodology, and used different stimuli in spatial and verbal domains in contrast with Experiment 1. In Experiment 3, selective attention was not needed to distinguish spatial tasks from verbal tasks because the spatial and verbal stimuli were different. A different pattern was obtained in Experiment 3; domain-specific lateralization was found only in the replacement sub-process (and not in the shift sub-process). Relationships among n-back task sub-processes, i.e., matching, replacement and shift were determined in advance by logical analyses. From this model, process-specific patterns of domain-specific lateralization, where domain-specific lateralization should exist in the shift sub-process of a conceptual task and in the replacement sub-process of a data-driven task, were predicted under conceptual and data-driven control. The results in Experiment 1 and 3 fitted these predictions, consistent with the proposed logical hypothesis of sub-processes. The similarity between match-specific and domain-specific lateralization suggests avenues for further studies. Using the framework of the model developed here, further investigation could be carried out at the sub-process level using the high temporal resolution of ERPs to decipher the detailed steps of processing that our brains execute in working memory tasks.

Abstract:
In NiTi, a reversible thermoelastic martensitic transformation can be induced by temperature or stress between a cubic (B2) austenite phase and a monoclinic (B19') martensite phase. Ni-rich binary compositions are cubic at room temperature (requiring stress or cooling to transform to the monoclinic phase), while Ti-rich binary compositions are monoclinic at room temperature (requiring heating to transform to the cubic phase). The stress induced transformation results in the superelastic effect, while the thermally induced transformation is associated with strain recovery that results in the shape memory effect. Ternary elemental additions such as Fe can additionally introduce an intermediate rhombohedral (R) phase between the cubic and monoclinic phase transformation. This work was initiated with the broad objective of connecting the macroscopic behavior in shape memory alloys with microstructural observations from transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Specifically, the goals were to examine (i) the effect of mechanical cycling and plastic deformation in superelastic NiTi; (ii) the effect of thermal cycling during loading in shape memory NiTi; (iii) the distribution of twins in martensitic NiTi-TiC composites; and (iv) the R-phase in NiTiFe. Both in situ and ex situ lift out focused ion beam (FIB) and electropolishing techniques were employed to fabricate shape memory alloy samples for TEM characterization. The Ni rich NiTi samples were fully austenitic in the undeformed state. The introduction of plastic deformation (8% and 14% in the samples investigated) resulted in the stabilization of martensite in the unloaded state. An interlaying morphology of the austenite and martensite was observed and the martensite needles tended to orient themselves in preferred orientations. The aforementioned observations were more noticeable in mechanically cycled samples. The observed dislocations in mechanically cycled samples appear to be shielded from the external applied stress via mismatch accommodation since they are not associated with unrecoverable strain after a load-unload cycle. On application of stress, the austenite transforms to martensite and is expected to accommodate the stress and strain mismatch through preferential transformation, variant selection, reorientation and coalescence. The stabilized martensite (i.e., martensite that exists in the unloaded state) is expected to accommodate the mismatch through variant reorientation and coalescence. On thermally cycling a martensitic NiTi sample under load through the phase transformation, significant variant coalescence, variant reorientation and preferred variant selection was observed. This was attributed to the internal stresses generated as a result of the thermal cycling. A martensitic NiTi-TiC composite was also characterized and the interface between the matrix and the inclusion was free of twins while significant twins were observed at a distance away from the matrix-inclusion interface. Incorporating a cold stage, diffraction patterns from NiTiFe samples were obtained at temperatures as low as -160ºC. Overall, this work provided insight in to deformation phenomena in shape memory materials that have implications for engineering applications (e.g., cyclic performance of actuators, engineering life of superelastic components, stiffer shape memory composites and low-hysteresis R-phase based actuators). This work was supported in part by an NSF CAREER award (DMR 0239512).

Abstract:
The article examines the problem of the “memory studies” development and the role that psychology and sociology play in the development of this interdisciplinary field of humanities. The authors divide the history of memory studies into two periods. The analysis of the first stage of the conceptual formation of memory research, starting from the end of the XIX century and till the first part of the century, first of all, on the basis of psychological, sociological is revealed. The authors demonstrate the trajectory of the evolution of the scientific understanding of “memory” from a purely psychological interpretation of the phenomenon to a socio-psychological concept (group memory), to a broad sociological theory (socio-cultural and historical memory). It is shown how at the second stage of the memory studies development, starting from the second half of the XX century till the present time, sociological research unfolds in the paradigm of memory studies and at the same time there is a new growth of interest in the psychological point of these studies. This is reflected in the development of psychoanalytic concepts, biographical research methods, and the increased role of oral history. It is concluded that the dialectical interaction of sociology and psychology in the interdisciplinary field of memory studies forms the basis of the heuristic potential of this modern humanities research.

Abstract:
The recording mechanism of an organic dye based CD-R disc has been studied by many researchers.1~4) Based on their studies, three different deformation effects, a bump at the dye/PC interface, a pit in the dye at the dye/Au interface and a bubble at the dye/Au interface are generally accepted as the recording mechanism of CD-R. Even though they predicted the deformation effects by the thermal analysis and observed the effects experimentally by using various microscope techniques qualitatively, the relationship between the deformations and the recording characteristics has not been studied quantitatively.

Abstract:
The final portfolio contains 8 research articles from national and international journals. Study designs include one systematic review, one randomized control trial with pretest-posttest design, three small-scale randomized control trials, one quasi-experimental study with no control, one time-series study, and one case study. All studies relate directly to components of the evidence-based practice question and will be used to draft new recommendations for implementation regarding spaced retrieval training for memory enhancement in adults with dementia. Seven out of the eight articles looked at the effects of SR techniques on functional tasks. Articles looked at eating difficulty (1), independent use of walkers (1), iADL function (3), use of technology (1), and ADL function (1). One out of eight articles looked at benefits of spaced retrieval techniques on episodic memory, which is not necessarily a functional task, but is needed to perform functional tasks.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: How does the efficacy of Intranasal Insulin in improving Cognition in Mild Cognitive Impairment or Dementia. Condition being studied: Insulin regulates many aspects of brain function related to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia, which can be delivered to the brain center via intranasal (IN) devices. Some small, single-site studies indicated that intranasal insulin can enhance memory in patients with MCI or dementia. The pathophysiology of Alzheimer disease (AD) and diabetes mellitus (DM) overlap, making insulin an attractive therapy for people suffering from MCI or dementia. The goal of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of IN insulin on cognition in patients with MCI or dementia.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: To identify empirical studies that measured the feasibility and effect of computer-based executive function stimulation and rehabilitation programs in the young and middle adult population. Background: Reviews that evaluate the effectiveness of computerized cognitive training programs on executive functions in different population groups have shown contradictory results, to a certain extent associated with the methodological characteristics of said studies (Gates et al., 2019; 2020); most of them These reviews have focused on older adults (Ten Brinke et al., 2020; Yoo et al., 2015) with stroke sequelae, and adults with cognitive impairment. These studies have found improvements in general cognitive function in older adults (Ten Brinke et al., 2020); however, the effect on executive functions have not been studied. Only one review was carried out on the average adult (Gates et al., 2019); the authors restricted the search to interventions with more than 12 weeks and only found one article with eligibility criteria. Their work concluded that computerized cognitive training in midlife demonstrated lasting effects on general cognitive function after 12 weeks of training and on memory after 24 weeks of training.

Full text
Abstract:
Two studies were conducted to examine how individual interest predicts interactions with domain content and subsequent free-choice exploration. Particular focus was on learners’ acquisition of knowledge and identification of content that triggered curiosity. College student participants reported their individual interest, learned about a topic in ecology (Study 1, N = 85) and astronomy (Study 2, N = 184), responded to prompts for memory of the learning content and curiosity questions, and then had the opportunity to explore additional content related to the topic. In both studies individual interest interacted with whether students’ curiosity was triggered by particular content. In academic domains, individual interest in conjunction with curiosity may be the best predictor of continued behavioral exploration. The results are discussed in the context of the four-phase model of interest development.
