The idea of a small group mentorship program was developed from the concept that small groups might, in some small degree, replace the companionship that men who had been made redundant had experienced in the workplace and in social activities related to work, and that, as a result, participants? health would improve. It was thought these groups would function better if one or two unemployed peers who could demonstrate some positive approaches to the experience of unemployment were identified. Abstract We present a study of the online forum Reddit, specifically a sub-forum for (typically heterosexual) men who identify as involuntary celibates or incels. Incels are an online imagined community/community of practice who wish to, but do not, have sexual relations with women. Owing to this identity, they view themselves as non-normative within broader society and see women and societal standards of masculinity as the cause of their problems. In this paper, we take a small corpus of 67,000 words generated from 50 threads created, and commented on, by incels. We analyse keywords, word fre

"Taking Composition and Similarity Effects into Account: Theoretical and Methodological Suggestions for Analyses of Nested School Data in School Improvement Research." In Accountability and Educational Improvement. Springer International Publishing, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-69345-9_6.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractSchool improvement research is faced with a school teaching staff, which is not a simple homogeneous entity. The compositional attributes of the teaching staff – such as diversity – can have a crucial influence on school processes. Whether the teaching staff is highly fractured, consists of sharply dissociated subgroups, or has shared beliefs, affects the adoption of school improvement programs differently. However, school improvement research has not yet taken into account what different compositions of the teaching staff mean from a methodological viewpoint. It is true that the use of multilevel analysis is standard in school improvement research and that it considers nested school data. However, this method alone only takes averaged measures of teaching staffs into consideration but not their different compositions. In this contribution, we argue that school improvement research has to consider, theoretically and methodologically, how compositional attributes of the teaching staff can be conceptualized. We first discuss some advancements in the conceptualization of group composition from research on small groups and organizations. We then incorporate suggestions for different diversity typologies from small group research to describe the compositional attributes of the teaching staff. Additionally, we address how the composition of the teaching staff influences each teacher differently, depending on the specific position a teacher has within the teaching staff. We further suggest incorporating the Group Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (GAPIM; Kenny, DA, Garcia RL, Small Group Res 43:468–496, 2012) as a methodological approach for assessing these compositional influences. In addition to classic multilevel analysis, the GAPIM also considers the effects of the other teachers on staff and the similarity and dissimilarity of a teacher to the other members of the teaching staff. Finally, we illustrate the possibilities of the theoretical and methodological endorsements discussed by applying the GAPIM to a data set of 37 German upper secondary schools by way of example. We show that a teacher’s job satisfaction is not only influenced by their individual and collective teacher self-efficacy but also by positional effects: The similarity of a teacher to the other teachers on staff and the similarity among the other members of the teaching staff have additional influences on job satisfaction.

Abstract:
Socioeconomic inequality among men and women is a major hindrance in ensuring equal advancement for all human being to live a dignified life. Minority status of women further exacerbates inequalities faced by women belonging to small ethnic groups. The chapter explores gender inequality across three small ethnic minorities' groups in Bangladesh. Applying Nussbaum's capability approach to analyze the situation of women with different social and ethnic identities, this chapter unpacks the three-fold barriers experienced by women belonging to minorities groups – first, as minority group, second as women and third as minority women. Lack of awareness, perceiving their “present state” as destiny, social and local norms and patriarchal way of thinking force these women to live with identity of secondary citizens.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 further explores the development of entitlement. This chapter is divided into two parts as it considers two areas of developmental influence: the peer group and mass media. The chapter begins with a look at the impact of social dominance goals (e.g., establishing power) of the peer group and the degree to which these goals affect peer interaction and disruptive classroom behavior. Homophobic bullying and gender policing are also addressed in this chapter. The price for entitlement is the all-out avoidance of femininity and all-in conformity to male norms. Boys and men may come to see conforming to rigid gender rules as a relatively small price to pay for privilege and entitlement. Sexualized violence is then considered through the lens of entitlement. In some male peer groups, the mistreatment of girls and women is not condemned, but rather it actually helps men gain status within that group. Chapter 4 next considers the influence of media and popular culture on the valuing of dominant groups over subordinated groups. The different representations of gender, race, and sexuality in mass media facilitate entitlement in dominant groups. Finally, the impact of media is considered with a review of experimental and correlational research on how media messages affect viewers.

Abstract:
Japan experienced a baby boom in the late 1940s and a second smaller one during the 1970s. This small second baby boom in the 1970s generated far fewer women of reproductive age in the 2000s, resulting in a missing third baby boom. Legalization of induced abortion in 1949 may have contributed to shortening the baby booms and suppressing the fertility rate. Less frequent sexual intercourse, delayed marriage, remaining single, and childless marriages play increasingly prominent roles in the recent low fertility rates in Japan. In the 1980s and 1990s, fertility rates in South Korea and China declined to similarly low levels. Fertility rates remain low in the three countries. Despite different histories and cultures, e.g. abortion rights and access to contraception, East Asian countries seem to share factors, such as trends in marriage and remaining unmarried, leading to low fertility rates. Further research and education across all age groups is needed. Policies that prioritize reproductive-aged adults, children, and childcare could play a key role in raising fertility rates.

This chapter provides an overview of the migration field, and a brief review of Mexico–U.S. migration flows up to 1965, the year the analysis here begins. It describes the data and methods that led the author to discover four groups among first-time migrants from Mexico to the United States between 1965 and 2010. The first cluster—mostly uneducated and poor men from rural communities—was the majority in the 1970s but dropped to a small minority by the 1990s. The second cluster—many of them teenage boys from relatively better-off families—peaked in the 1980s, becoming the majority group at that time, but declined consistently in size thereafter. The third cluster—mostly women with family ties to former migrants—was increasing slowly in size until it experienced a sudden spike in the early 1990s. And the fourth cluster—mostly educated men from urban areas—grew persistently over time, grabbing the majority status among all first-time migrants in the early 1990s.

Abstract:
Sometime in the middle of May in 2017—at the height of summer in India—a grainy mobile phone video began to make its way across the country. The recording rocketed from phone to phone, first in the eastern state of Jharkhand and then nationally, circulating among groups on WhatsApp. The video was shot in portrait, showing a man beaten and bloodied, crumpled up on a patch of barren earth. His white undershirt was rolled up to his chest and drenched in blood. Encircling him was a small mob of men armed with cane sticks. Several appeared to be filming the proceedings on their phones. “You son of a bitch,” someone screamed. “Motherfucker! We’ll kill you!” A cacophony of abuse was under way. The man was pleading for his life, but his cries were drowned out by a rising tide of expletives and fury. The mob continued to beat the man. The video cut to black. The subject, Sheikh Haleem, was killed. He was only twenty-eight. Six others were killed as well, across two separate vigilante attacks. It was as if a cloud of rage had suddenly descended on a small part of Jharkhand, propelling village men to embark on extrajudicial murder sprees. It turned out that a rumor had spread that a group of strangers was abducting children from nearby villages. The rumor made its way onto WhatsApp; the rumor morphed into “news”; the news, circulating from phone to phone, villager to villager, was weaponized; a group of locals decided to act. The rest happened very quickly. A mob was formed. Strangers were produced, beaten up, and murdered. Justice was delivered. The recordings of the killings were duly sent back out into the ether of WhatsApp, completing the cycle of horror. Jharkhand’s police were befuddled. There had been no reported cases of child abductions. The rumor was completely unfounded. “Rumors have always flourished in India,” says Pratik Sinha, the founder of a myth-busting website, AltNews.in. “But it’s become exponentially dangerous because of the internet.”

Chapter 6 presents a case study of Asian American and Latina/o candidate emergence in Los Angeles County. The county is defined by large immigrant populations, strong coalitions of racial minorities who are Democrats, unions active in electoral politics, and an effective Latina/o political infrastructure focused on candidate development and support. Yet here, as in the rest of the country, white men’s choices about where and when to run appear relatively unconstrained while women and men from other racial groups are largely focused on running in a small number of select seats. The chapter offers new data on patterns of descriptive representation among white, African American and Asian American women and men, and Latina/os in Los Angeles County for the past two decades. The chapter also uses interviews to detail how Latinas, Latinos, and Asian American women are positioned in the political context and coalition politics of the county.

Abstract:
Background: In an era of explosive growth in biomedical evidence, improving systematic review (SR) search processes is increasingly critical. Text-mining tools (TMTs) are a potentially powerful resource to improve and streamline search strategy development. Two types of TMTs are especially of interest to searchers: word frequency (useful for identifying most used keyword terms, e.g., PubReminer) and clustering (visualizing common themes, e.g., Carrot2). Objectives: The objectives of this study were to compare the benefits and trade-offs of searches with and without the use of TMTs for evidence
