Abstract:
A few months into the popular uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in 2009/10, the promises of social media, including its ability to influence a participatory governance model, grassroots civic engagement, new social dynamics, inclusive societies and new opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs, became more evident than ever. Simultaneously, cartography received new considerable interest as it merged with social media platforms. In an attempt to rearticulate the relationship between media and mapping practices, whilst also addressing new and social media, this int

Abstract:
Idiocy, once understood as a mark of divine disfavor, is later medicalized under a variety of seemingly scientific classifications, culminating in a eugenic-era fear of the “menace of the feebleminded” and the widespread institutionalization to which it gave rise. In literature and in music, representations of idiocy have generally fallen into a small number of types: the Holy Fool and the Sentimental Idiot; the Wild Child and the Natural Man; the Village Idiot (often played for laughs); and the Eugenic Idiot (simultaneously pitiable and a feared source of violence, possibly sexual in nature).

Abstract:
Religion is a contested discursive field in which resources, belonging or exclusion and supremacy in relation to values are negotiated. Diversification processes and religious pluralisation during the alleged return of religion have re-raised the questions of how religion should be interpreted and how accessible it is. As a contribution to intersectionality research, this publication analyses how and in what interest new interfaces are being formed between religion, gender, origin, class and the nation. Its focus lies on educational processes as forms of socialisation, places of learning and r

Ten years after the start of the uprisings in the MENA region, this volume examines the causes, current state and prospects of those revolts, focusing on the objectives and strategies of selected actors from the region (Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Israel) as well as those of external powers (the USA, the EU, Russia, Turkey), while Syria and Iran represent cross-cutting issues. The book focuses on uncovering the interplay between internal and external factors of influence. It is in moments of great upheaval that societies may best be studied. Today, The North Africa and the Middle East region (MENA) finds itself in the most alarming state since World War I. The Oxford Handbook of Contemporary Middle East and North African History is a timely intervention to interrogate the region’s internal dynamics and take stock of its place in world politics. It illuminates afresh dominant historical currents as well as counter-currents that previous accounts have not given their due attention or have failed to notice.
