Abstract:

This article discusses the biographies of Menachem Mendel Schneerson (the Rebbe) within the broader context of Chabad historiographic lore, in particular the quasi-historical writings of Yosef Yiẓḥak Schneersohn from the 1930s and 1940s. Described by Ada Rapoport-Albert as “hagiography with footnotes,” these seemingly scholarly and modern texts constituted an alternative narrative to that of academic Jewish history. From this vantage point, I consider how biographies published by academics and by hasidic authors have mutually influenced each other, particularly in their scope, form, and method. To that end, I examine the controversy that surrounded the 2010 publication of the first academic biography of Schneerson, Samuel Heilman and Menachem Friedman'sThe Rebbe, and analyze the strategies undertaken by subsequent authors that have allowed them to present the Rebbe's life in a form that was no longer “hagiography with footnotes” (which would have alienated a secular readership) but as seemingly impartial biographies (without alienating the hasidic readership).

When Menachem Friedman and I resolved to write what became The Rebbe: The Life and the Afterlife of Menachem Mendel Schneerson, we did so because as sociologists we were puzzled, as we put it in our preface, by how a “a small Hasidic group that seemed on the verge of collapse in 1950 with the death of their sixth leader” had replanted itself in America and in less than a generation “gained fame and influence throughout the world in ways no one could have imagined” at the time their next and thus far last rebbe, Menaḥem Mendel Schneerson, took over the reins of leadership in 1951. More than that, we were quite amazed that this group, which at its height during the twentieth century was never among the largest hasidic sects and probably numbered at most about 100,000 worldwide, had managed to become among the most well-known hasidim in the world. We were no less struck that they had found ways to make their Jewish outreach efforts, as well as their extraordinarily parochial belief that the contemporary world had entered messianic times (and that only Lubavitchers and their rebbe knew how to hasten his coming), both newsworthy and known far beyond the borders of the hasidic world. Through a series of directed campaigns that aimed to transform Jewry and the world, many, if not most Lubavitchers had also tried to convince the world that their leader, who had reigned over them from Brooklyn for forty-three years, was the Messiah incarnate, even as he lay dying at Beth Israel Hospital in New York.

Abstract Benjamin Franklin’s ideas and writings may be said to have had an impact on Jewish thought and practice. This influence occurred posthumously, primarily through his Autobiography and by way of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Lefin’s Sefer Cheshbon ha-Nefesh (Book of Spiritual Accounting, 1808), which introduced Franklin’s method for moral perfection to a Hebrew-reading Jewish audience. This historical development has confused Judaic scholars, and Franklin specialists have been largely oblivious to it. Remedying the record on this matter illustrates how even within the presumably insular world of Eastern European rabbinic Judaism—far from the deism of the trans-Atlantic Enlightenment—pre-Reform, pre-Conservative Jewish religion was affected by broader currents of thought.

Abstract:

This article considers how the musar (virtue-focused) tradition in Jewish ethics may shape Jewish moral judgments on questions of war and peace, focusing on various constructions of the virtue of humility in modern Jewish thought. It gives particular attention to concepts of humility advanced by Menachem Mendel Lefin, the leading figure of the Polish Haskalah, and it suggests that Lefin’s model of critical selfassessment, especially if carried out in partnership with those from different nations or traditions, could help to restrain the misplaced pride, enthusiasm, and impulses to dehumanize enemies that may emerge at times of war. The article brings Lefin’s approach into dialogue with three Jewish thinkers who argued that proper humility should in some cases encourage the use of violence and even the dehumanization of enemies: the Lithuanian Orthodox rabbi Simhah Zissel Ziv, the American Reform rabbi Kaufmann Kohler, and the militant Orthodox Israeli rabbi Meir Kahane.

Abstract:

The article deals with the social construction of the charisma of the seventh leader (rebbe) of the Jewish Chabad movement, Menachem Mendel Schneerson (19021994). The comprehensive analysis of the charismatic carrier of the leader shows the process by which the spiritual power of Schneerson moved from a classical (according to Weber) interaction between charisma and a community that recognizes this power to a identification of his figure with the Messiah. Schneerson and the Chabad movement actually represent an effort to modernize one of the two tendencies present in the Chassidic tradition concerning the figure of Messiah: in contrast with the idea that considers not predictable the arrival of Messiah, Chabad, particularly because of the Schneerson's charisma, believe the advent of Messiah imminent. The task of the leader consequently is to pay attention on the premonitory signs of the forthcoming event. The identification between charisma and Messiah in Chabad movement represents a case study of extreme messianism that means a real impasse to solve and rule the question of succession of charisma after the death of the Rebbe.

AbstractScholarship on Hasidism typically utilizes literary source material of the dynastic leaders and their top disciples, while the more typical master/disciple relationship has escaped attention. Hasidic movements have produced, distributed, and voraciously consumed visual portraits of their leaders throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The most visually productive Hasidic community is the Belarusian HabadLubavitch, which has produced images of five of its seven generations of leaders. Indeed, portraits of its leaders have been integral to the development of Habad both in Eastern Europe and its post-Shoah rejuvination in the United States. This paper begins with Habad's visual history from the 1880s release of portrait paintings of the first and third Habad leaders in the effort to establish a unified group identity at a time of factionalism. The survey then moves to Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, the sixth Rebbe of Habad, who rallied his followers with the medium of photography. Photography became a central component of his leadership in the 1930s and 1940s. The study then moves to the seventh and last Habad leader, Menachem Mendel Schneerson, who expanded the use of visual culture in Habad and used his own image to forge a post-Shoah group identity around a distinctly American leader who was also the spiritual repository of the six preceding Russian leaders. Schneerson's image production and reproduction began to model American celebrity culture in the early 1970s as part of a public campaign to inaugurate the Messianic Age. This broad dissemination of Schneerson's image inadvertantly created an elastic Schneerson portrait, whose reflexivness, in some respects, transcended its subject.

La présence de facteurs environnementaux précipitant le passage à l’acte suicidaire est indéniable. Cependant, seuls les sujets porteurs d’une vulnérabilité suicidaire, lorsqu’ils sont soumis à des facteurs de stress, passent à l’acte [3]. Les facteurs environnementaux sont généralement associés à une menace du statut social de l’individu. Tout comme on ressent une douleur lorsque l’intégrité physique est menacée, l’être humain perçoit une douleur lorsque son « intégrité sociale » est menacée. La douleur sociale peut être considérée comme un sous-type de douleur psychologique en lien avec une menace du besoin fondamental d’affiliation [5]. Il est probable qu’une sensibilité accrue à la douleur sociale et psychologique participe à la vulnérabilité suicidaire [4]. Par exemple, la présence d’abus dans l’enfance est fortement associée à la survenue de tentative de suicide à l’âge adulte, mais aussi à une sensibilité accrue au rejet [1] ainsi qu’une plus forte prévalence de comorbidités algiques [2]. L’étude de la perception douloureuse nécessite des travaux supplémentaires afin de favoriser la mise en place de nouvelles stratégies thérapeutiques vis-à-vis des conduites suicidaires.

Les conduites addictives comme l’ensemble des troubles psychiatriques peuvent être vue comme des réponses adaptatives à ce qui est perçu comme une menace sur l’homéostasie psychique de l’individu. Menaces que le vécu d’impuissance et/ou de débordement résument pour l’essentiel. À ce vécu émotionnel que le sentiment de solitude, incompréhension, d’absence de valeurs vient aggraver, répond pour le sujet la nécessité physiologique avant même d’être psychique de retrouver un rôle actif, de ce percevoir à nouveau agent de sa vie. Ces réponses peuvent être considérées comme pathogènes, sinon pathologiques, dans la mesure où elles ne sont pas choisies mais répondent à des contraintes émotionnelles et qu’elles ont des conséquences négatives sur le développement du sujet. Elles le privent à terme des échanges nécessaires à son épanouissement dans au moins un des trois domaines clés que sont : prendre soin de son corps, développer ses compétences et sa sociabilité. De pathogènes les conduites deviennent pathologiques quand le sujet s’enferme dans ces comportements dont il est prisonnier même si par le soulagement qu’ils apportent il peut croire qu’il les a choisis librement. Tout ce qui limite cet enfermement et redonne au sujet envie de prendre soin de lui peut être considérer comme thérapeutique. On conçoit que les approches thérapeutiques puissent être multiples et complémentaires qu’elles reposent toujours sur des rencontres privilégiées, celles qui autorisent un retour de la confiance en soi et dans les autres, condition de cette envie de prendre soin de soi.

Au cours des dernières années, les groupes de défense des droits des personnes atteintes de troubles mentaux ont obtenu des résultats importants dont l’adoption de politiques de réduction des mesures d’isolement et de contention. Ces politiques témoignent d’un consensus à l’effet que la coercition doit être utilisée uniquement en dernier recours et dans des circonstances exceptionnelles. L’attention grandissante sur les droits des personnes ayant un problème de santé mentale suscite des réactions qui sont très peu abordées dans la littérature. En effet, il n’est pas rare d’entendre les soignants se demander si les patients ne jouissent pas de plus de droits qu’eux-mêmes. Cet article examine cette interrogation de deux perspectives : d’une part, l’auteur tente de cerner ce qu’elle traduit de l’expérience des soignants, d’autre part il identifie les enjeux éthiques et juridiques des politiques des programmes de réduction des mesures d’isolement et de contention.

Abstract:

The current article attempts to provide a theoretical account of obsessions about blasphemy, sexuality, and aggression from an inference-based perspective. It is argued that self-evaluative and self-representational dimensions in obsessions need to be taken into account to allow for the misrepresentation of mental states. A persuasive narrative containing rhetorical devices informs the misrepresentation of mental states and gives credibility to the obsession. These narrative devices seem to originate from a distrust of the self where the person overinvests in a sense of self-as-could-be rather than a sense of self-as-is, which consequently gives rise to a discordance between the person and the obsession (i.e., egodystonicity). The article concludes with some theoretical and clinical implications for cognitive models of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Abstract:

The AIDS virus is transmitted through the exchange of bodily fluids between an infected person and an uninfected person, and the sharing of needles by IV drug users has been one of the primary means of transmission. The incidence of infection by this method has increased in the world, and in the inner cities of the United States has been a particular problem. Infected drug users also transmit the disease to their sexual partners and to their unborn children. Educational efforts have been directed at changing the behavior of drug users to reduce their sharing of needles, and some cities have tried handing out free needles. Such efforts, of course, run counter to the admonition not to use drugs at all, but health professionals believe changing behavior is the most important way of attacking the disease. While transmission of the HIV virus through IV drug abuse remains a significant problem, there is evidence that the educational efforts have been working and that, in some areas at least, behaviors have been changed and the risk has been reduced.

Pour d’autres, il peut être l’objet de fantasmes : craintes de réductionnisme clinique, menaces pour l’attribution des ressources financières, menaces pour les libertés individuelles… Dans la tête de certains chercheurs, le numérique peut être un formidable outil de traitement de données massives, mais encore réservé à quelques équipes. Dans la tête des patients, ce peut être un gadget supplémentaire où la frontière entre bien-être et santé reste floue. Dans tous les cas, le numérique ne laisse personne indifférent. Pour mieux s’approprier ces nouvelles technologies, il faut aujourd’hui maîtriser les multiples possibilités qu’elles nous offrent, loin d’une quelconque science-fiction ou d’une béatitude naïve. L’objectif de cette session est de sortir des simples notions techniques de la question numérique, ou d’une vision gadget à la mode, et d’explorer dans différents domaines le champ des possibles, limités par des contraintes éthiques et techniques. Ainsi, du point de vue des patients, la recherche d’informations sur les troubles psychiatriques, l’efficacité et la tolérance des traitements sur Internet sont perçues comme normale. Néanmoins, la qualité des informations médicales trouvées sur Internet est très variable, nécessitant un travail de psychoéducation. Du point de vue des psychiatres, le numérique est devenu un support majeur de transmission des informations et des connaissances. Plusieurs sites Internet et applications Smartphone de psychoéducation ou de collecte des données patients ont été développés ces dernières années peuvent aussi servir d’outil pour les thérapeutes . Enfin, d’un point de vue recherche, il est possible maintenant d’exploiter les richesses de nos archives cliniques grâce aux technologies du Web sémantique.

Prenant appui sur des apports théoriques et une situation clinique, nous insisterons sur ce qui, hors la question de « l’amplification fantasmatique » décrite par Michel Soulé (amplification fantasmatique concernant les réaménagements des liens parents–enfants propres à cet âge de la vie), donne une tonalité particulière à la situation d’abandon–adoption lors du processus d’adolescence. Outre, le niveau primitif/archaïque du lien charnel qui a été manquant, nous mettrons en relief les aspects paradoxaux des projections parentales en lien avec la « double » filiation, la question de l’abord de la sexualité par le jeune dans ce contexte (contexte dans lequel le jeu des identifications est rendu plus acrobatique), enfin la manière dont les soignants sont interpellés dans ces situations où pèse souvent une menace de rupture du lien parent-enfant, pourtant symboliquement institué.

L’auteur montre que si l’adolescent questionne autant la famille et la civilisation moderne dans leur rapport aux idéaux, c’est parce qu’à travers lui se repose avec acuité la question de la différence, interpellant l’autre au cœur de ce qui le fonde et le divise, à la croisée du singulier et du collectif. Cette différence qui se ravive à travers l’épreuve de grandir et qui s’exacerbe dans le contexte de l’immigration peut être constructive lorsqu’elle est reconnue comme porteuse d’altérité. Mais elle peut déboucher sur la ruine lorsqu’elle est perçue comme une menace et qu’elle n’est plus entourée par des repères symboliques. C’est ce dont témoigne l’expérience clinique au quotidien auprès d’un bon nombre d’ adolescents dit en rupture de lien social, qui finissent par se confondre avec l’image déficitaire que leur renvoi d’eux même l’Autre Social et/ou parental.

Introduction.L’homicide conjugal est commis sur un partenaire ou un ex-partenaire de vie intime quel que soit son statut. Il représente environ 20 % des homicides en France [1]. D’origine multifactorielle, son repérage est complexe.Objectif.– Mettre en évidence les caractéristiques socio-démographiques, psychopathologiques et criminologiques des hommes auteurs d’homicide conjugal, afin de déterminer des facteurs prédictifs de passage à l’acte.Méthode.Étude descriptive et rétrospective sur 37 dossiers d’homicide conjugal (ou tentative), jugés entre 1999 et 2010 par la Cour d’Appel de Poitiers. Un nombre important de variables concernant les auteurs, les victimes et les faits a été recherché. Elles ont ensuite été recoupées pour établir des profils.RésultatsLes hommes représentent 88 % des auteurs d’homicide conjugaux. Ils sont pour la plupart impulsifs (80,4 %) et présentent des antécédents judiciaires (64,8 %) et de violence conjugale physique (70,3 %). La moitié abuse de l’alcool. Le passage à l’acte est souvent motivé par la séparation du couple (64,8 %). Il est fréquemment commis avec une violence exagérée (54 %). Auparavant, environ la moitié des auteurs avait exprimé des menaces de mort ou suicidaires.ConclusionNotre étude a montré que l’homicide conjugal est un geste non prémédité, commis par des hommes, devant la difficulté à accepter la perte de la compagne. Ce crime est souvent associé à la violence conjugale et l’éthylisme chronique. La mise en évidence de ces profils permet de proposer des actes de prévention plus ciblés.

Le risque du « nommer » avant le « comprendre » est de méconnaître et de sous-estimer l’expérience de la chair que développe Merleau-Ponty [1]. Une expérience qui n’est pas claire une bonne fois pour toute, qu’il tente de restituer par ses formules allusives, transitives pour mieux la cerner, sans la trahir et décrire ce qui se passe aux abords des choses, dans cet entre-deux qui laisse son empreinte dans toute la psychopathologie qui se désire phénoménologique. « Comprendre » et « Voir » avant d’« Interpréter » comme le proclamait Binswanger, c’est ici avoir renoncé à saisir pour mettre l’accent sur la dépossession qui l’accompagne et qui nous ramène à notre passivité originelle. À savoir que les choses sont à laisser être, qu’il peut y avoir de l’être sans qu’il est à être posé, dans la persuasion silencieuse du sensible quand il est là sous la main. Un sensible qui ne cesse d’être ambiguë et transcendant, en se gardant de toute positivité, de toute opération de l’esprit qui peut rapidement dévier vers une pensée opératoire comme le dit la clinique. Comprendre que l’il y a du monde sensible est un il y a d’inhérence, qui nous rattache au monde et nous rapporte à l’être, qui n’est pas devant nous, mais nous entoure de toutes parts dans un rapport charnel que nous sommes condamnés à rechercher encore et encore dès lors que nous en serions privés. Privation du monde et de la présupposition de l’autre, résultats d’une inter-corporéité toujours fragile devant les menaces et leur dépassement qui en même temps m’aident à affermir mes visées et mon identité.
