Full textDue to the fact that the household consumption expenditure are valued for approximately 60% of Quebec's GDP, it is important to understand how economic politics affect the aggregate demand through consumers' expenses and also, how household consumption expenditures will vary according to the consumer's environment. Firstly, this paper reviews the consumption with an econometric technique of no particular structure. Secondly, this paper proposes and estimates a model of an optimizing agent who is faced with the problem of allocating intertemporally his consumption of non-durable and durable goods when confronted with a fluctuating rate of return. Expectations are assumed to be formed rationally. The study was conducted from 1981(01) to 2011(03). Our results are consistent with the findings of previous studies and the literature and allowed us to interpret how income, relative price of durable goods, financial wealth, housing market, index of consumer confidence, and interest fluctuations could explain the variation in consumption expenditures of households in Quebec as a whole, but also by some sub-categories. Our analysis also revealed that when household consumption is disaggregated, it is important to consider the relationship between those sub-categories. Non-separability in preferences between durables and non-durables is important and this is why the modeling of different types of aggregate consumption should be taken into consideration.

Full textConsumer theory offers an interesting framework which can be use for an empirical representation of consumption behaviour. Studying these behaviours is interesting in itself. Also, it can be use as a tool for public economies analysis. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the study of these behaviours, and to propose sorne applications. In the first chapter, we treat the major problem of the measurement of priee effects in the case where no quantities are available in the data. The second chapter proposes a study of indirect taxation in a behavioural framework, with the use of a new microsimulation model. Finally, the third chapter focuses on the interest of the panel structure for the consumption data. We compute consumption laws on a highly disaggregated nomenclature by working out a pseudo-panel using a starting data set with no temporal dimension

Full textThis thesis deals with the allocation of income between savings and total expen, ditures as well as the allocation of total outlay among expenditure groups. Chapter one surveys the main advances on consumption dynamics. Chapter two is devoted to the study of a permanent income model with non separable utility subject to liquidity constraints. We show that several tests commonly used in the literature are not able to distinguish between habit formation and liquidity constraints. Chapter three deals with the estimation of a model of consumption with liquidity constraints applied to a panel of developing countries. We show that the model fit the data fairly well. We also propose a more elaborate model that takes into account the threats of debt repudiation. Chapter four surveys the literature on de, mand system estimation. Chapter five deals with the estimation of a dynamic demand system when only aggregate and cross section data are are available. Particular attention is given to the non stationarity of the data. The appendix proposes a survey on cointegration and a method for calculating p-values for non standard distributions

Full textThis work consists of an estimation and analysis of a probabilistic model and of reduced demand models of a stochastic utility. These models enable the comprehension and the quantification of existing relations between the choice of a heating system by the household and its energy demand. In order to analyse the different levels of energy expenditure between households these estimations have been based on individual data coming from the database "budget des familles 1984 85", INSEE. The estimation of probabilistic marginal model parameters as well as those of conditional expenditure models has enabled to prove the evidence of phenomena resulting from individual household or housing characteristics. Estimations determined in the frame of the probabilistic level of a choice of a heating system redraw the history of fuels from the 40's up to today. A trend towards organised systems can be seen, with a significant preference for gas network and electricity. For the estimation of the conditional models of energy demand the impact of the housing insulated is quantified as well as of the average external temperatures during the heating months (October-May). A disparate link on the various equipments is shown with the surface
