Abstract:

This dissertation explores notions of self-invention and performance in mid-nineteenth century America by examining the life and writings of actress and poet, Adah Isaacs Menken, from roughly 1835 to 1868. During America's Civil War years, Menken became an international star in the controversial title role of Mazeppa, an equestrian play. at the climax, soldiers forcibly stripped Mazeppa (Menken) to reveal her body in a costume suggestive of nudity. The soldiers tied her to a horse and sent her careening up a steep mountain into the theatre rafters. This provocative "breeches part" allowed Menken to pursue unusual freedoms for a woman of her time as she faced a public that both celebrated and demonized her physical display.;Menken maintained a complex relationship with the public that hinged upon constantly shifting identities; she wore men's clothing while emphasizing her reputation as a femme fatale, formed intellectual friendships though she perpetuated low-brow drama, and claimed African, Jewish, Irish, Spanish and British ancestry. Dime novels and Bohemian literature suggested alternative routes for a woman to fulfill her aspirations, and Menken used their tropes to explore gender and sexual identity both on and off the stage. An aspiring poet, she also used her fame to befriend some of the most famous writers of her age, including Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, Charles Swinburne, Alexandre Dumas, and Walt Whitman. When she died in 1868, she left a volume of poetry, Infelicia, that has gone in and out of print for over a century.;Menken's writing and correspondence allows us to examine not only Menken but the world in which she tried to meet her aspirations. This biographical dissertation functions as a study of mid-nineteenth century America as Menken traveled from New Orleans to Cincinnati, New York, and California. Her final years in Europe also enable us to explore how Americans judged their importance in the larger culture of the western world. This dissertation adds to the history of African-Americans, Jews, and women, explores Victorian notions of gender and sexuality, and contributes to our understanding of nineteenth-century American popular culture.

Abstract:

This dissertation project, which recovers the feminist invention of 19th-century actress and author Adah Menken, proves the efficacy of conducting historigraphic recoveries of heretofore forgotten and elided female rhetors. I situate Adah’s visual and written performances within the materiality of Victorian social codes, positioning her as a feminist commentator worthy of inclusion in our remembrances of feminist discourses. I use archival sources including carte de visites (CDVs) and Adah’s letters and poetry as heuristics for gendered critique, to analyze how she resisted the master narrative of Victorian society and its accompanying codes governing public and private feminine behavior. My objectives are three-fold: to use archival recovery as a method to unearth and evaluate what feminist inquiry can accomplish; to argue for the feminist intentions of a previously unknown female writer; and to offer an opportunity to discover cross-disciplinary connections for rhetorical recoveries. Feminist inquiry is itself an exemplar of rhetorical invention, the idea of making a path. In my dissertation project, I illustrate how Adah Menken blazed a path in her personal and public rhetorics. For my principal goal of asserting Adah’s importance as a feminist rhetor, I use primary sources to demonstrate that her invention and resistance provide fertile ground for vital feminist inquiry. As a secondary means of asserting the significance of archival feminist research, I also offer my Adah Menken recovery as a case study for examining ideas of resistance and subversion to dominant master narratives. For this application, I use Judith Butler’s theory of performativity and Michel Foucault’s ideas surrounding the topic of resistance. Ultimately, the convergence of theoretical and practical applications for rhetorical recoveries, both of which I describe in-depth in my dissertation, serve to re-connect fields of inquiry and make them relevant to scholars across the Academe.

Abstract:

Notre travail concernant Disney s’inscrit dans le champ de la musique de film, et même si le studio a fait l’objet de nombreuses recherches tant sur des questions esthétiques que culturelles, il reste intéressant à étudier, car il peut ainsi devenir l’objet de recherche, non sur l’originalité d’un corpus, mais sur un déplacement de la méthode, nous permettant d’interroger l’idéologie à l’œuvre. Notre thèse concentre son attention sur La Petite Sirène (1989), La Belle et la Bête (1991) et Aladdin (1992) où il nous semble que, en recourant à la recomposition de la musique de certaines séquences des films, nous puissions faire jouer à la part de virtualité du texte filmique un rôle dans cette entreprise critique : retrouver la voix des héroïnes Ariel, Belle et Jasmine. Si un geste de recomposition musicale peut nous aider à penser ce rapport au personnage, c’est parce que nous pensons que la musique peut faire entendre la virtualité d’un film (et plus précisément de ses personnages), et devenir par cela un geste d’analyse critique de son idéologie. La recomposition musicale met en acte les allers-retours indispensables à la compréhension des séquences que nous travaillerons : elle redonne corps aux espaces de résonance du film et compose les affleurements d’une promesse initiale proposée par le film vis-à-vis de son héroïne. Ces allers-retours nous permettent de retrouver l’importance des numéros musicaux. En prolongeant notre analyse par le prisme de l’intermédialité, nous réfléchissons à la porosité avec la scène de Broadway (ou plus précisément ici avec le off-Broadway) qui permettent des doubles lectures issues des numéros musicaux
From aesthetics to cultural studies, Disney has been the subject of many studies. Thanks to this prolific research, it is possible de study it by another methodological angle to understand the ideology of and within the movies. Within the academic field of film music, our thesis will draw its attention on The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991) and Aladdin (1992). It seems that, thanks to an alternative version of the original score that we would compose, we may bring the potentiality inscribed in the movie to be a part of our critical study: find the heroines’ voice Ariel, Belle and Jasmine. We think that this method will enable us to take account of the character’s consistency for the music can be a way to hear the potentiality of a movie (and specifically here, the characters), so it will be an opportunity to discuss Disney ideology. The musical recomposition enact the back and forth inside the different moments of the movie to help us understand what is at stake: it enlightens the resonances between the sequences and compose the surfacing promise initially build-up by the movie towards the heroine. It also helps us thinking about the movie’s interactions while getting to the surface the aforementioned promise the movie was trying to stop from actualising. By extending our analysis through the prism of intermediality, we consider the porosity of theses musical numbers with the Broadway stage (and more accurately the off-Broadway) whose enable us to do dual readings of the movie. All the music in its connexion to the rest of the audio-visual complex enable us to think about the power relations which occurs in the movie

Das Thema dieser Arbeit ist die spektraltheoretische Untersuchung von zufälligen Operatoren, die zu einem minimal ergodischen bzw. strikt ergodischen Delone dynamischen System assoziiert sind. Es werden kontinuierliche sowie diskrete Modelle untersucht. Diese Modelle sind mathematische Modelle zur Beschreibung von Festkörpern, bei denen die Punkte der einzelnen, in einem Delone dynamischen System enthaltenen, Delone-Mengen die Atompositionen eines Festkörpers beschreiben. Delone-Mengen, die in einem minimal ergodischen Delone dynamischen System enthalten sind weisen eine sehr hohe Ordnungsstruktur auf, sind aber nicht notwendigerweise periodisch. Sie können daher zur Modellierung von Quasikristallen verwendet werden. In dieser Arbeit wird das Spektrum der assoziierten Operatoren im kontinuierlichen sowie im diskreten Fall untersucht.

COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR
Nesta série de ensaios interdependentes sobre Murilo Mendes, buscamos iluminar diferentes aspectos de sua obra, em especial aquela produzida na Itália, onde o autor se fixou de 1957 até sua morte, em 1975. O fio implícito que liga estes ensaios é a indagação sobre a sua relação com o repertório da cultura ocidental, elemento destacado tanto em sua poesia quanto na prosa. Relação esta que o distingue de outros escritores modernistas, uma vez que, para Murilo Mendes, não se tratava de contrapor uma cultura à outra, mas de formar um conjunto único, em que as diferenças não assumem posição hierárquica, nos moldes, por exemplo, de uma equação centro-periferia. A metáfora do colecionador, que guia o primeiro ensaio, é utilizada como uma chave que permite analisar sua prosa-inventário da tradição ocidental. O surrealismo à brasileira do autor, tema de outro ensaio, mostra o modo peculiar como Murilo absorveu as vanguardas do início do século XX. E o seu projeto universalista é tratado no terceiro capítulo. Os textos que compõem este estudo procuram, assim, acercar-se dessa obra por meio de uma escrita ensaística, conforme definição de Adorno, em que os vários pontos se entrelaçam como em um bordado. Escrita marcada pelo experimento, mais do que pela busca de um pensamento sistêmico e conclusivo.
This is a series of interdependent essays on Murilo Mendes which focus on different aspects of his work, particularly the texts he wrote in Italy, where he lived from 1957 until his death in 1975. The thread that implicitly runs through these essays is his relationship with the Western cultural repertoire, an aspect that stands out in both his poetry and his prose. Indeed, it is this that differentiates him from other Modernist writers. Murilo Mendes was not interested in setting one culture against another, but in uniting them in such a way that their differences were not represented hierarchically, such as center versus periphery. The metaphor of the collector that appears in the first chapter serves as a key for analyzing his body of prose from the Western tradition. His Brazilian-style surrealism is the object of another essay that discusses the particular way he incorporated the European vanguards of the early twentieth century. The third chapter is about his universalism. Overall, this study seeks to address the work of Murilo Mendes using the essay form as defined by Adorno, where points in the different texts interweave like a tapestry. The style is more experimental than strictly systematic or conclusive in its thinking.

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo traçar um panorama da vida do poeta Murilo Mendes na Europa entre as décadas de 1950 e 1970, através das cartas enviadas por ele a sua irmã Virgínia Mendes Torres. Com base na análise desse conjunto epistolar é possível refazer parte da trajetória do poeta mineiro que transplantado em território estrangeiro atuou nos meios acadêmico, literário e artístico, representando o Brasil e construindo sua própria vertente do modernismo brasileiro.
The current work aims to draw a prospect of the poet Murilo Mendes life in Europe among the decades of 1950 and 1970, through the letters sent by him and his sister Virgínia Mendes Torres. Considering the analysis of that epistolary group is possible to redo part of the poet\'s trajectory that transplanted in foreign territory acted in the academic, literary and artistic means representing Brazil and building his own view of the Brazilian modernism.

Abstract:

The main objective of this work was to investigate the application of experimental design techniques for the identification of Michaelis-Menten kinetic parameters. More specifically, this study attempts to elucidate the relative advantages/disadvantages of employing complex experimental design techniques in relation to equidistant sampling when applied to different reactor operation modes. All studies were supported by simulation data of a generic enzymatic process that obeys to the Michaelis-Menten kinetic equation. Different aspects were investigated, such as the influence of the reactor operation mode (batch, fed-batch with pulse wise feeding and fed-batch with continuous feeding) and the experimental design optimality criteria on the effectiveness of kinetic parameters identification. The following experimental design optimality criteria were investigated: 1) minimization of the sum of the diagonal of the Fisher information matrix (FIM) inverse (A-criterion), 2) maximization of the determinant of the FIM (D-criterion), 3) maximization of the smallest eigenvalue of the FIM (E-criterion) and 4) minimization of the quotient between the largest and the smallest eigenvalue (modified E-criterion). The comparison and assessment of the different methodologies was made on the basis of the Cramér-Rao lower bounds (CRLB) error in respect to the parameters vmax and Km of the Michaelis-Menten kinetic equation. In what concerns the reactor operation mode, it was concluded that fed-batch (pulses) is better than batch operation for parameter identification. When the former operation mode is adopted, the vmax CRLB error is lowered by 18.6 % while the Km CRLB error is lowered by 26.4 % when compared to the batch operation mode. Regarding the optimality criteria, the best method was the A-criterion, with an average vmax CRLB of 6.34 % and 5.27 %, for batch and fed-batch (pulses), respectively, while presenting a Km’s CRLB of 25.1 % and 18.1 %, for batch and fed-batch (pulses), respectively. As a general conclusion of the present study, it can be stated that experimental design is justified if the starting parameters CRLB errors are inferior to 19.5 % (vmax) and 45% (Km), for batch processes, and inferior to 42 % and to 50% for fed-batch (pulses) process. Otherwise equidistant sampling is a more rational decision. This conclusion clearly supports that, for fed-batch operation, the use of experimental design is likely to largely improve the identification of Michaelis-Menten kinetic parameters.

Abstract:

Denna uppsats undersöker hur menstruation visuellt framställs genom fyra förpackningar till menskoppar. Undersökningen sker genom en visuell analys där de meningsbärande visuella attributen i förpackningarna identifieras. Detta följs upp med en diskursanalys där de visuella attributen sätts i en större kontext, där de blir objekt för kritisk granskning i förhållande till teori om representation, diskurs, genus, förpackningsdesign och relaterad forskning om menstruation. Resultatet visar att förpackningarna framställer menstruation som en biologisk företeelse, men som samtidigt är ohygienisk. Menstruation framställs också till att associeras med den biologiska kvinnan och förpackningarna upprätthåller således den konventionella uppdelningen kvinna/man. Undersökningen ämnar belysa hur grafisk design kan konstruera och upprätthålla konventioner kring menstruation genom förpackningsdesign.

Le sujet de cette étude est la comparaison entre la poétique de l’écrivain français Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918) et du poète brésilien Murilo Mendes (1901-1975). Le but de l’investigation c’est la vérification, à travers un recueil poétique des auteurs, la présence de traces qui caractérisent la modernité, depuis les innovations de Baudelaire, les yeux visionnaires d’Arthur Rimbaud et les reflexions linguistiques de Stéphane Mallarmé; jusqu’à la naissance des avants gardes au début du vingtième siècle. Parmi elles, celles qui ont plus de points de contact avec les poètes de cette étude, et qui y seront étudiées sont le Cubisme, le Futurisme et le Surréalisme. La recherche exprime la manière dont les deux auteurs établissent les images poétiques chez leurs oeuvres, et a l´intention de vérifier quelques thèmes et quelques techniques qu’ils utilisent. Les caractéristiques qui les approchent sont exemplifiées à travers les poèmes choisis parmi plusieurs oeuvres des deux poètes. Ainsi, la sphère interpretative peut être élargie.
O presente estudo tem por objeto a comparação entre a poética do autor francês Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918) e do poeta brasileiro Murilo Mendes (1901-1975). O objetivo da pesquisa é verificar, por meio de uma coletânea poética de ambos, a presença de traços característicos da modernidade, desde as inovações baudelairianas, passando pelo olhar visionário de Arthur Rimbaud e pela reflexão lingüística de Stéphane Mallarmé, até o surgimento das vanguardas artísticas do início do século XX. A tese explora o conceito da intertextualidade, um dos princípios básicos da teoria formulada por Roland Barthes, Julia Kristeva e da interdiscursividade de M. Bakhtin, a fim de identificar e analisar diálogos da poética de Murilo Mendes com a de outros artistas e poetas, desenvolvidos em três eixos: o sagrado, a arte e o mito. Começando pelo nome feminino Berenice, investiga como o tema do sagrado se revela a partir da musa, fio condutor da primeira parte da pesquisa, que retoma as relações do poeta com Ismael Nery e Adalgisa Nery. A seguir, volta-se ao adágio horaciano Ut pictura poesis para explorar processos intertextuais que englobam não apenas citação, mas ainda metalinguagem, paráfrase e encaixes (mise en abyme e ekphrasis). Nessa segunda parte, a reflexão voltada para a arte, por meio de imagens literárias e pictóricas de traços estilísticos e processos de composição, tem como corpus Murilo Mendes, Ismael Nery, Vieira da Silva e Arpad Szenes. Por fim, calcada na comparação da obra poética de Maria da Saudade Cortesão Mendes com a de Murilo Mendes, a última seção aborda a reescrita literária do mito, processo recorrente na literatura contemporânea, além de procurar dar visibilidade à poesia de Saudade Cortesão, deixada à sombra pela crítica atual. Em linhas gerais, a tese evidencia a intertextualidade como recurso teórico que afirma, acima de tudo, o caráter profuso da poesia de Murilo, que se quis carregada de referências culturais diversas.
The thesis explores the concept of intertextuality, one of the basic principles of theory formulated by Roland Barthes, Julia Kristeva and M. Bakhtin’s interdiscusivity, in order to identify and analyze dialogues of the poetics of Murilo Mendes with that of other artists and poets, developed in three axes: the sacred, art and myth. Beginning with the feminine name Berenice, it investigates how the theme of the sacred reveals itself from the muse, the guiding thread of the first part of the research, that resumes the relations of the poet with Ismael Nery and Adalgisa Nery. Next, it turns to the horacian adage Ut pictura poesis to explore intertextual processes that encompass not only citation, but still metalanguage, paraphrase, mise en abyme and ekphrasis. In this second part, the reflection directed towards the art through literary and pictorial images of stylistic traits and composition processes, has as corpus Murilo Mendes, Ismael Nery, Vieira da Silva and Arpad Szenes. Finally, based on the comparison of the poetic work of Maria da Saudade Cortesão Mendes with that of Murilo Mendes, the last section deals with the literary rewriting of the myth, to seek to give visibility to the poetry of Saudade Cortesão, left in the shade by the current critics. In general terms, the thesis highlights that intertextuality is a theoretical resource that affirms, above all, the profuse character of Murilo's poetry, which was loaded with diverse cultural references.

O objetivo da pesquisa é verificar, por meio de uma coletânea poética de ambos, a presença de traços característicos da modernidade, desde as inovações baudelairianas, passando pelo olhar visionário de Arthur Rimbaud e pela reflexão lingüística de Stéphane Mallarmé, até o surgimento das vanguardas artísticas do início do século XX. Entre estas, as que possuem ligação mais estreita com os poetas aqui estudados e que, por isso, serão mais aprofundadas são o Cubismo, o Futurismo, e o Surrealismo. O estudo reflete sobre o modo como os autores constroem as imagens poéticas em seus textos, além de verificar alguns temas e técnicas comuns a ambos. Abstract:

Ce projet porte sur la caractérisation de l’alliage d’aluminium aéronautique 2024 en propagation de fissure de fatigue dans une solution saline. Le premier objectif est la caractérisation des synergies entre le chargement cyclique, la métallurgie et la corrosion, et l’analyse de leur influence sur la fissuration en fatigue en immersion permanente en solution saline. Les interactions complexes entre le chargement mécanique, la métallurgie et la corrosion, contrôlées par le temps de mise en charge, sont discutées dans le cadre d’une compétition entre la passivation de la pointe de fissure et la fragilisation par l’hydrogène, assistée par la dissolution anodique. Le deuxième objectif est l’étude de la différence entre une exposition permanente et une exposition séquentielle à la solution saline lors de la fissuration en fatigue. Sous certaines conditions, une nette accélération de la fissuration est observée lors d’une immersion séquentielle par rapport à une immersion permanente, ce qui peut conduire à des durées de vie estimées supérieures aux durées de vie réelles des structures soumises à une exposition séquentielle à la corrosion saline. Pour les deux premiers objectifs, la contribution possible d’un dommage de type corrosion sous contrainte est évaluée, en terme de vitesses de propagation, en fonction du chargement mécanique et de l’environnement. Le dernier objectif traite de la possibilité d’appliquer les résultats obtenus ici pour le 2024 à d’autres alliages d’aluminium
This project focuses on the characterization of the aluminum alloy 2024 in fatigue crack propagation in saline solution. The first aim is the characterization of the synergistic effects between the cyclic loading, the metallurgy of the alloy and the environmental attack, and their influence on the corrosion fatigue crack propagation. Those effects are shown to be controlled by rise time, and are discussed in terms of a competition between passivation of the crack tip and hydrogen embrittlement enhanced by anodic dissolution. The second aim is the analysis of the difference between a permanent immersion and an alternate immersion in saline solution during fatigue crack propagation. A net increase in the crack growth rates can be observed when the alloy is exposed to an alternate immersion, compared to a permanent immersion. For the two first aims, the possible contribution of stress corrosion cracking is quantified, as a function of the mechanical loading and the environment. The last aim of this study is the examination of the applicability of the results obtained on the 2024 alloy to other aeronautical aluminum alloys

Abstract:

A modification in an existing water uptake and solute transport numerical model was implemented in order to allow the model to simulate solute uptake by the roots. The convection-dispersion equation (CDE) was solved numerically, using a complete implicit scheme, considering a transient state for water and solute fluxes and a soil solute concentration dependent boundary for the uptake at the root surface, based on the Michaelis- Menten (MM) equation. Additionally, a linear approximation was developed for the MM equation such that the CDE has a linear and a non-linear solution. A radial geometry was assumed, considering a single root with its surface acting as the uptake boundary and the outer boundary being the half distance between neighboring roots, a function of root density. The proposed solute transport model includes active and passive solute uptake and predicts solute concentration as a function of time and distance from the root surface. It also estimates the relative transpiration of the plant, on its turn directly affecting water and solute uptake and related to water and osmotic stress status of the plant. Performed simulations show that the linear and non-linear solutions result in significantly different solute uptake predictions when the soil solute concentration is below a limiting value (Clim). This reduction in uptake at low concentrations may result in a further reduction in the relative transpiration. The contributions of active and passive uptake vary with parameters related to the ion species, the plant, the atmosphere and the soil hydraulic properties. The model showed a good agreement with an analytical model that uses a linear concentration dependent equation as boundary condition for uptake at the root surface. The advantage of the numerical model is it allows simulation of transient solute and water uptake and, therefore, can be used in a wider range of situations. Simulation with different scenarios and comparison with experimental results are needed to verify model performance and possibly suggest improvements.
Uma modificação em um modelo existente de extração de água e transporte de solutos foi realizada com o objetivo de incluir nele a possibilidade de simular a extração de soluto pelas raízes. Uma solução numérica para a equação de convecção-dispersão (ECD), que utiliza um esquema de resolução completamente implícito, foi elaborada e considera o fluxo transiente de água e solutos com uma condição de contorno à superfície da raiz de extração de soluto dependente de sua concentração no solo, baseada na equação de Michaelis- Menten (MM). Uma aproximação linear para a equação de MM foi implementada de tal forma que a ECD tem uma solução linear e outra não-linear. O modelo considera uma raiz singular com geometria radial sendo sua superfície a condição de contorno (limite) de extração e sendo o limite extremo a meia-distância entre raízes vizinhas, função da densidade radicular. O modelo de transporte de soluto proposto inclui extração de soluto ativa e passiva e prediz a concentração de soluto como uma função do tempo e da distância à superfície da raiz, além de estimar a transpiração relativa da planta, que por sua vez afeta a extração de água e solutos e é relacionado com a condição de estresse da planta. Simulações mostram que as soluções linear e não-linear resultam em predições de extração de solutos significativamente diferentes quando a concentração de solutos no solo está abaixo de um valor limitante (Clim). A redução da extração em baixas concentrações pode resultar em uma redução adicional na transpiração relativa. As contribuições ativa e passiva da extração de solutos variam com parâmetros relacionados à espécie de íon, à planta, à atmosfera e às propriedades hidráulicas do solo. O modelo apresentou uma boa concordância com um modelo analítico que aplica uma condição de contorno linear, à superfície da raiz, de extração de solutos dependente da concentração no solo. A vantagem do modelo numérico sobre o analítico é que ele permite simular fluxos transientes de água e solutos, sendo, portanto, possível simular uma maior gama de situações. Se faz necessário simulações com diferentes cenários e comparações com dados experimentais para se verificar a performance do modelo e, possivelmente, sugerir melhorias.
