On the night of 7 June 1861, at a playhouse in Albany, New York, actress Adah Isaacs Menken, on horseback, wearing nothing but a fleshcolored bodystocking, galloped up a stage mountain into theatrical history. The combination of danger and nudity shocked and excited her Victorian audience. In an age when women swathed themselves in yards of crinoline, her performance proved scandalous; critics agreed that, though she wore “pink fleshings,” she so explicitly revealed the female form that she might as well have been naked. One reviewer warned that “no pure youth could witness her performance and come away untainted. Naturally, such cautions increased curiosity; soon Menken became the most notorious, highest paid actress of her day. She toured with her show Mazeppa through the northeast, the American west, and the capitals of Europe before succumbing to cancer a short seven years later in Paris.

In this article, I examine how Maya Deren and Marie Menken’s mid-1940s filmmaking enacts a gestural aesthetic. Drawing on Vilém Flusser’s thinking on gesture (his discussion of “moving tools” and the thoughtfulness of hands), I draw attention to the importance of hands in Deren and Menken’s work. In Visual Variations on Noguchi (1945), Menken employs a handheld Bolex camera to explore the different material properties of art objects. Through her sweeping camerawork, film editing and sound, she transforms Noguchi’s art into new, cinematically stuttering, borderline abstract compositions. In At Land (1944), Deren’s unnamed protagonist (played by Deren herself) is filmed reaching, touching, clasping and grasping her way through a highly mutable world. In Deren’s re-working of the mythic quest narrative, hands function as a gestural, thoughtful means of adaptation. Hands also provide Deren with a manual means of manipulating “film form”, of manually piecing together different surfaces, shots and scenes. In Visual Variations on Noguchi and in At Land, both artist-filmmakers use their “moving tools” to transform human gesture. Through their foregrounding of the hands (onscreen and offscreen), Deren and Menken enact a desubjectified, gestural cinema.

Famine mortality has a special interest for those interested in population history. After Malthus wrote An Essay on the Principle of Population in 1798, famine was viewed as an event that “checks” population growth, perhaps the inevitable consequence of overpopulation. Although demographers have recently tried to show that a single famine or demographic crisis cannot retard population growth in the long run (Watkins and Menken 1985; Bongaarts and Cain 1982), yet famine, to the extent that it exists today, still constitutes a most dramatic demographic event.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the place of pedagogy in language-in-education policy through an analysis of how the macro-level government policy interacts with the micro-level English language teaching practices. Since 2015, the teaching and learning of English language to grade 3 students, in all public schools of the Punjab, has been carried out through a literacy and numeracy drive called LND. The present study investigated the effectiveness of teaching English to grade 3 through literacy drive policy (LDP) of LND programme. It locates the implementation of LDP, in language in acquisition policy perspective and supports the stance that language teaching and learning is central to language planning and policy research (Johnson, 2013; Menken & García, 2010). It argues that language interventions deployed at any level of education are extension of language education policies which aim to improve the quality of education and to promote the learning of the language. Like all language in acquisition policies, LDP for teaching and learning of English is being executed in the same context of increasing the number of language users through teaching of foreign or second language (Cooper, 1989). The study investigated perceptions of teachers regarding teaching and learning of English through LDP with the notion that effective implementation of any language programme is linked with the understanding and practices of teachers who are the real implementers and final arbiters at micro level (Menken, 2008). The present study included a portion of data from my PhD dissertation. It collected teachers’ experiential standpoints to explore teachers’ awareness regarding implementation of LDP and issues they face inside the classrooms when they carried out teaching learning of English through LDP. The findings of the study revealed that teachers teaching English to grade 3 lack awareness in terms of clear understanding regarding LDP mainly because it is less elaborated and not accessible. It ultimately hindered the successful implementation and poses multiple classroom challenges.

In two compelling new books, each analyzing a sensational female star whose career peaked in the late nineteenth century, the multifaceted celebrity image becomes the historical prism refracting the social, political, and cultural dynamics of various performance contexts. Neither study purports to chronicle the star's entire life and document truths about “who she really was.” Rather, each focuses on a relatively brief, temporally circumscribed period of the performer's career and examines her complex public personae and their meanings to her American audiences. Ultimately, more is revealed about the values of those who consumed and exploited the star than about the star herself. The two celebrities at issue here, Adah Isaacs Menken and Sarah Bernhardt, separated in time by a generation, compare in intriguing ways, both as historical agents and as subjects of historiographical analysis.

The apple ermine moth, Yponomeuta malinellus Zeller, is a univoltine pest species that defoliates apple, Malus domestics (Borkh) (Rosaceae), in the temperate region of the Palaearctic. First instars overwinter within a communal hibernaculum beneath the covering of the egg batch (Kock 1998). In spring, larvae emerge to initially mine apple leaves and subsequently feed externally within a communal tent (Menken et al. 1992). During heavy infestations, the communal tents may envelop the entire apple tree, resulting in total defoliation (Parker and Schmidt 1985). There have been several accidental introductions and subsequent eradications of the apple ermine moth in eastern North America (Hewitt 1917; Parker and Schmidt 1985) but, by 1989, the pest was found in the Fraser River Valley in British Columbia, in Whatcom county, Washington, and in northwestern Oregon (Antonelli 1991; Unruh et al. 1993).

The 1982 camp horror musical Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of a meek little flower shop attendant named Seymour, who comes across a novelty carnivorous plant that eats human blood. The talking plant preys on Seymour’s infatuation with his beautiful co-worker Audrey to radicalize him into feeding the plant ‘fresh’ bodies. Building on the work of theatre scholar Michael Chemers, who asserts that stage monsters represent larger social and political anxieties of their time, this article identifies Seymour, the normal, white, heterosexual everyman, as the real ‘monster’ of the musical. Thus, the musical’s creators, Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, exposed the monstrousness of normativity at the poignant moment in American culture, during the early years of the conservative Reagan administration. This article uses José Muñoz’s theory of ‘disidentification’, a strategy employed by marginalized people working ‘on and against dominant ideology’ to analyse the creators’ didactic and subversive strategy.

Peter Kunze’s book Staging a Comeback: Broadway, Hollywood, and the Disney Renaissance is a (overwhelmingly) well-researched study of the transmedial migration of popular narratives in the 1980s and the 1990s. Focused on Disney’s appropriation of the Broadway integrated musical (H. Ashman, A. Menken), the study demonstrates how the musical theatre conventions improved the quality of Disney’s main product — the animated film. Kunze engages in close reading of an extended episode from the history of cultural production (the Disney Renaissance), showing the complexity and unpredictability of various media convergences. For instance, the book reconfigures the roles of managerial and creative labourers behind the Disney transformation, wittily (and convincingly) bringing to the forefront 1982 as annus mirabilis, which triggered immense changes in the cultural sector. After discussing Disney's appropriation of the musical Broadway, the book reveals how the updated animated musical comes back to the theatrical stage and transforms ‘respectable’ Broadway by alternative styles and agendas (Julie Taymor’s The Lion King). Apart from other sources, the research uses hardto- access archival materials, the author's interviews with the practitioners and their entourage.

Teknik pengumpulan data antara lain: teknik observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi.Teknik keabsahan data. Analisis data dalam penelitian ini deskriptif kualitatif, yaitu analisis dalam bentuk pernyataan dan analisis yang diungkapkan dengan deskripsi Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa aransemen instrumen string lagu A Whole New World memiliki 3 kali perpindahan tangganada (modulasi) dan fill in pada beberapa bagian lagu. ___________________________________________________________________ Abstract The string instrument arrangement of the song A Whole New World by Steve Deaprof Band was made attractive and modern, thus making the song more varied, especially in the different string fillers from the original song. This is the background for researchers to conduct this research. The aim of this research is to know and describe the string instrument arrangement of the song A Whole New World by Steve Deaprof Band. The research approach used is descriptive qualitative. The research location is in Steve Deaprof's office, which is Jln. KHM Mansyur no.3, Bendan, Pekalongan. Data collection techniques include: observation, interview, and documentation techniques. Data validity techniques. The data analysis in this research is descriptive qualitative, namely analysis in the form of statements and analysis expressed with descriptions. Abstract:
The strengthening of technical education in Brazil, by the creation of the Federal Institutes (Law 11.892/2008), brings a new and growing reality for Spanish teachers: the challenge of working in an educational context whose proposal is based on vertical integration. In this scenario, a teacher can teach at different levels of education (from Secondary Education to Postgraduate Education) at the same institution. The aim of this paper is to describe the context of teaching Spanish in secondary technical courses, in the integrated, concomitant and sequential modalities, at two campuses of a Federal Institute in the south of Brazil. Furthermore, reflections on some specifics of this educational level in Vocational and Technological Education (VTE) and on the demands generated by such specifics are presented. The methodological approach adopted in this study is qualitative descriptive, since the research consists in describing aspects of a social environment (the institution, the school) with which the researcher is clearly interwoven. Our analysis is based on theoretical frameworks that address Language Policies, especially the educational ones (KAPLAN; BALDAUF, 1997; MENKEN; GARCÍA, 2010). The study deals with the aspects that should be considered when making decisions regarding the course planning, methodological choices and consequent development of teaching materials, as well as provides guidelines on how to handle the unique context of VTE.

Resumo Este artigo discute meus esforços durante várias décadas de pesquisa para compreender a interação entre letramento escolarizado, diversidade linguística e desigualdade social. Inspira-se em tradições semióticas e marxistas para investigar a diversidade linguística e a desigualdade social em contextos europeus e norte-americanos contemporâneos. Enfocando especialmente as práticas de racialização e a dinâmica das aulas, os argumentos apresentam estudos iniciais sobre línguas de minorias e escolaridade que contribuem para e contextualizam um estudo recente sobre a política federal de educação, experiências de escolarização de imigrantes e hierarquia linguística. Esse estudo baseia-se em pesquisa sociolinguística e etnográfica com famílias e comunidades migrantes multilíngues e comunidades no norte do estado de Nova Iorque, com foco específico na experiência de crianças com repertórios multilíngues e políticas linguísticas monolíngues na escolarização (COLLINS, 2012). Examinando a política e os debates federais sobre educação e comparando os processos de interação em sala de aula, que envolvem diferentes grupos etnolinguísticos, identifico dois “efeitos de Estado” (TROUILLOT, 2001), conforme eles operam em diferentes locais institucionais. Defendo que tais efeitos são maneiras como os Estados contemporâneos tentam regular aulas globalizadas e dinâmicas raciais. Ao moldar sujeitos educacionais cujas características sociais e linguísticas – e especialmente as suas características de classe – são obscurecidas e empregadas em categorizações relacionadas à escola e em processos de comunicação centrados na escola, tais efeitos contribuem para a reprodução hegemônica das desigualdades sociais, linguísticas e educacionais (HYMES, 1996; MENKEN, 2008).

Een belangrijke en steeds terugkerende vraag in de geschiedenis van het wijsgerig denken met betrekking tot het probleem van het universele en individuele is: hoe is het mogelijk dat in een wereld van individuele dingen (particularia) gezegd kan worden dat de dingen uniek zijn en nochtans gelijkenis met elkaar vertonen en dus kennelijk niet volstrekt uniek zijn. Hoe kunnen we één en dezelfde eigenschap toeschrijven aan onderscheiden dingen. Of zoals door sommigen bij voorkeur geformuleerd: Hoe kunnen we één en hetzelfde prediceren van vele onderscheiden dingen. Sommigen menen dat dit naast het accepteren van particularia ons noopt te spreken over universalia. Naast het spreken over individuele mensen, paarden, bomen, stenen, rode dingen enz. bestaat er ook iets universeels, zoals mens-zijn, paard-zijn, boom-zijn, steen-zijn, roodheid enz., kortom datgene wat mensen, paarden, bomen, stenen, rode dingen enz. gemeenschappelijk hebben. De realisten zeggen, ondanks alle verschillen, dat universalia niet gereduceerd, niet herleid kunnen worden, tot particularia. De nominalisten aanvaarden, ondanks alle verschillen, alleen individuele dingen in de werkelijkheid, terwijl het universele slechts bestaat in de menselijke geest als woorden (nomina) of als concepten (conceptualisten).

Pada penelitian ini dilakukan uji kuantitatif dengan menggunakan metode spektrofotometri serapan atom. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kandungan logam Timbal (Pb) dan terdeteksi dalam sampel air sumur.di TPA Cadika. Kadar Timbal (Pb) pada ketiga sampel yaitu pada air sumur A 0,16224 mg/L, air sumur B 0,17650 mg/L dan air sumur C yaitu 0,21210 mg/L Dari hasil pemeriksaan menunjukkan bahwa kadar Timbal (Pb) pada air sumur A, B, dan C melebihi dari standar yang ditentukan. berdasarkan KEPMENKES No. 907/MENKES/SK/VII/2002 Lampiran II Peraturan Menteri Kesehatan Nomor 416/MEN.KES/PER/IX/1990.
