A fundamental distinction in criminal law is the distinction between actus reus and mens rea, the criminal act and the criminal intent. Two distinct standards have arisen for deciding mens rea: an objective standard and a subjective standard. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a three-step rule that will make it easier to decide whether to apply the objective or subjective standard in cases involving intoxication. This thesis focuses on the treatment of insanity in the criminal law and its implications for the concepts and mechanisms of legal accountability. In order to address this issue, I examined the historical background of the insanity defense and five specific cases that demonstrate the complications arising from insanity’s present legal condition. This study presents an attempt to reduce the losses produced by the purge flow in a turbine stage by incorporating circumferential platform contouring. Two contours are proposed and compared against a baseline at different levels of swirl. The computational simulations were performed using a RANS three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics code with the Shear Stress Transport turbulence model. In this work, we studied the electronic behavior of polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) and applied them for the synthesis of carbon nanotube reinforced ceramic nanocomposites and ceramic MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) structures. Polymer-derived SiCN ceramics were synthesized by pyrolysis of a liquid polyureasilazane with dicumyl peroxide as thermal initiator. A fluid that contains species in the presence of a concentration gradient generates unusual phenomena when it is forced into pulsatile motion. For example, each species in the fluid has an enhanced mass transport due to pure molecular diffusion. This enhancement takes place even if there is no net total flow over a cycle of the pulsatile motion. When more than one species in dilute amounts is present in an otherwise pure fluid, called a carrier, each species is transported at a different rate thereby causing a partial separation of the species.
