Abstract:

Abstract:
In many societies there is a stigma surrounding menstruation. It is often perpetuated through representations in advertisements as well as lack of open discussions. This thesis investigates ways that people are presenting menstruation on the social media platform Instagram and concludes that this is a space which allows the normative menstruation discourse to be challenged. Instagram is a widely used app that allows users to interact with others through sharing photos and has the potential to be a space for empowerment and challenging dominant ideologies. Publicly accessible photos were collected from the app using hashtags related to menstruation and menstrual activism, as well as menstrual activist accounts and menstrual product accounts. The results of a qualitative content analysis reveal numerous themes which challenge or reinforce the stigmas: Empowerment, Solidarity, Resistance, Normalizing Periods, Women’s Health, Standard/Normative, Eco-Friendly and Marketing.

Abstract:
While much research has been done to broaden the understanding of the menstrual cycle, there appears to be no study that has focused upon the professional's attitudes and knowledge regarding menstruation. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to study the attitudes toward and the knowledge of menstruation held by those of the psychological and medical professions. Sex differences in these areas were also explored. The subjects were practicing psychologists and counselors (50), graduate-level counseling psychology practicum students (33), medical interns and residents (25), and undergraduate students (85). A 4 x 2 multivariate design was utilized with groupings by population and sex. Dependent variables were scores on The Menstrual Attitude Questionnaire and The Menstrual Knowledge Test. The main effects were tested in a multivariate sense. Univariate statistics were used to interpret significant simple effects. All findings were interpreted at alpha level p<.05.Three of the four null hypotheses were rejected. Analysis of the data revealed significant differences among all groups in menstrual attitudes (p<.000). The male and female attitudinal responses were significantly different in all but the practicing psychologists and counselors group (p<.000). The undergraduate student group displayed significantly less knowledge regarding menstruation than the other groups (p<.000). There were no significant differences in the knowledge levels between sexes (p<.386).For the most part, the undergraduate group held more extreme attitudes toward and less knowledge regarding menstruation than the other groups. This suggested that a combination of life experience and additional education promotes an adjustment toward more positive attitudes and an increase in knowledge regarding menstruation. Of particular importance was the indication that the medical profession may be more negatively biased toward women who experience difficulty during menstruation than the psychological profession. However, the belief that women should deny the negative aspects of menstruation and act as if the difficulties experienced are not bothersome, existed to sane degree in all groups. It was recommended that training programs in psychology and medicine include intensive education regarding the influence of menstruation upon women and that a more comprehensive assessment tool be developed to measure knowledge about menstruation and treatment for menstrual related problems.

Abstract:
Women all over the world menstruate and nurses meet menstruating women in their daily work. The purpose of this literature study was to describe womens' experiences of menstruation. The design of this study was a general literature study based on womens' stories about menstruation. By analyzing data, different key words were identified to create two main themes, The Menstrual Health and The Menstrual Illness. Of these two main themes, six different subthemes could be formulated: Femininity, Cohabitation, Acceptance, Physical discomfort, The condemned female body and Feeling dirty. Menstruation was a proof of health and evidence of a functioning and fertile body and as an attribute to femininity. Menstruation like ill health was characterized by negative experiences. This was often based on ignorance of the female body as well as the perception of menstruation as shameful. Linked to menstruation, nurses have an important role in providing support and education. As research on womens' experiences of menstruation in Sweden is limited, therefore further research is required regarding the subject in this part of the world.

Abstract:
Although menstruation is a biological process that occurs for women of a sexually mature age, many cultures associate it with symbols that shape and affect women's lives within these societies. This thesis examines orthodox Hindu beliefs about the origin and meaning of menstruation, which is fundamentally viewed negatively (i.e., adharmically). Drawing upon sources from the earliest to more recent Dharmasastra literature, the thesis demonstrates that orthodox Hindu menstrual taboos derive from menstruation's adharmic associations, which in turn affect attitudes towards women. The Dharmasastras also attempt to realign women with dharma by prescribing appropriate roles for them and act in tandem with the Hindu goddess tradition. Orthodox interpretations of Hindu goddesses configure these deities to serve as dharmic models "for" and " o f women, thereby transmitting dharma to women in ways that are perhaps more meaningful, accessible, and effective than the sastric literature alone. iv

Full text
Abstract:
Luteal regression progesterone withdrawal, vasoconstriction of uterine vessels with ischaemia, hypoxia, necrosis are important events in the initiation of menstruation. Local factors, possibly released from endometrial inflammatory type cells, may also be involved. A family of enzymes, matrix metalloproteinases, identified within human endometrium are involved in tissue breakdown via actions on the extracellular matrix. Vasoactive substances, such as vascular endothelial growth factor, which stimulate angiogenesis are also present within the endometrium. Both factors may be important in initiation and regulation of menstruation, and have a role to play in the aetiology of abnormal uterine bleeding. Exogenous sex steroid hormones, oestrogen and progestogen, are commonly prescribed as contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy. Breakthrough bleeding is a common side-effect limiting their use. This thesis aims to identify local endometrial factors which may be involved in breakthrough bleeding in pre and post menopausal women exposed to hormone replacement and the levonorgestrel intrauterine releasing system. Expression of endometrial sex steroid receptors, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs); and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) will be identified. Menorrhagia, blood loss over 80 ml per cycle, leads to significant morbidity but is rarely measured out with clinical trials. Endometrial gland apoptosis is increased in women with such subjectively heavy losses. This thesis will identify if this increase is also seen in women with objectively measured menorrhagia when the endometrium is otherwise histologically normal. The management of women with aberrant patterns of uterine bleeding is based on endometrial assessment. This thesis will look particularly at a new method of endometrial sampling, the Tao Brush compared to the gold standard outpatient sampling device, the Pipelle. A clearer understanding of the role of these local control mechanisms, an improved ability to identify women with heavy blood losses and better sampling methods will allow rational and effective management of women with abnormal uterine bleeding.

Abstract:
This study examines the existence of cultural heritage concerning menstruation in Swedish museum collections and in which contexts they have participated in exhibitions or been otherwise exposed to the public. The study also intends to find out whether taboos related to menstruation have affected the collection and exposure of the so-called "menstrual items". The empirical material consists of a survey sent to what can be said to be the general museum system in Sweden consisting of central museum, regional museum, municipal museum, city museum and three other cultural history museums with a response rate of 85.4% as 81 of 96 museums have participated. The study shows that 50.6% of the museums have menstrual items in the collections and that the majority of these museums had approximately 1-5 of such items. The most common item category was menstrual protection. 64.8% of museums with menstrual objects in the collections had exposed these to the public, usually only a few objects and the most common exhibition format was temporary exhibitions. The majority of menstrual items have been acquired in the years 1951-2021. Whether menstrual taboos have affected the existence of cultural heritage concerning menstruation in Swedish museums is difficult to ascertain based on this study. On the other hand, taboos may have affected the type of objects in museums' collections, as most of the material consists of menstrual protection, the task of which is to control the flow of menstruation, which may reflect society's relationship to menstruation, which often consists of feelings of shame about the subject.

Fitzpatrick, Katherine. "Foraging and menstruation in the Hadza of Tanzania." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/275062.

Full text
Abstract:
The Hadza, residing near Lake Eyasi in northern Tanzania, represent one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer populations. Inhabiting the same area as our hominin ancestors and exploiting very similar resources, the Hadza maintain a foraging lifestyle characterised by a sexual division of labour. Studies of their foraging and food sharing habits serve as the foundation to numerous hypotheses of human behaviour and evolution. Data from the Hadza have featured heavily in debates on the sexual division of labour. These debates focus predominantly on men’s foraging, including how and why men provision. Women’s provisioning, on the other hand, is seldom explicitly examined and is often presumed to be constrained by reproduction. This thesis contributes to debates on the sexual division of labour by investigating how a woman’s reproductive status affects her foraging behaviours. Observational data on women’s foraging are investigated from 263 person/day follows (1,307 hours total) across 10 camps between 2004 and 2006. These data present the first quantitative documentation of forager women’s eating and sharing outside of camp. Interview data on women’s reproductive timeline are also analysed from in-depth interviews with 58 women from 9 camps in 2015. Spanning from menarche to menopause, these data offer the first quantitative and qualitative documentation of forager women’s menstruation. The results demonstrate that Hadza women eat and share over 800 kilocalories outside of camp per person/day. They regularly give and receive food, including gifts of honey from men. Breastfeeding women are more likely to give gifts and give more gifts than non-breastfeeding women. When they bring nurslings with them outside of camp, they forage less kilocalories per hour. Post-menopausal women eat less relative to what they forage, are less likely to receive gifts, rest less and forage more than pre-menopausal women. Although Hadza women describe their foraging workload as most difficult during late pregnancy, no significant differences in eating, sharing, resting or foraging are observed for pregnant women. Menstrual data from the Hadza reveal that menstruation is not only culturally relevant to the sexual division of labour, but it is also biologically relevant to current understandings of fertility. The majority (60%) of Hadza women report not doing their normal work during menstruation. They also report menstruation-related taboos for berry picking. The thesis presents an in-depth review of women’s menstruation, from the duration of menses to the menstrual cleaning process.

Abstract:
Background: Menstruation can be perceived as taboo to talk about in a sports context. Hormone fluctuations during the menstrual cycle can affect sports performance through changes in strength, endurance, balance, and mood. Increased knowledge of women's physiology may improve the athlete's ability to feel good in her sport, optimize her training and detect menstrual disorders in time. Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate how elite sports women experienced menstruation and athletic performance. Method: A survey study was conducted using a web survey. The participants examined consisted of 76 elite females from different team sports; Basketball (n = 20), Soccer (n = 12), Handball (n = 8), Floorball (n = 20), Ice Hockey (n = 4) and Volleyball (n = 1) and from individual sports; Athletics (n = 1), and Triathlon (n = 10) which were represented in the study. Coaches, assistant coaches or sports managers from sports clubs and associations with women's sports at the elite level were contacted via e-mail with a request to forward the attached digital questionnaire to the female elite athletes in their organizations. Results: The majority of the participants (59%) felt it was taboo to talk about menstruation in sports. Just as many (59%) felt that they could not talk about menstruation with their coach. Of the participants, 95% had not received any education on how the menstrual cycle may affect athletic performance by coaches, sports associations, or sports federations. The majority of the participants felt that there was a lack of knowledge among the coaches and leaders about the woman's physiology (51%). Of the participants there was 68% who felt that menstruation affected their athlete performance, all though a majority of them did not adapt their training according to the menstrual cycle (95%). There was 37% of the participants who had experienced menstruation disturbances. Menstrual disturbances were most commonly experienced in the age group 16-19 years (44%). Conclusion: The majority of the participants of this study felt there was a taboo around menstruation in sports contexts. Most of the athletes felt that they could not talk to their coach or leader about menstruation. In the participants’ opinion, the menstrual cycle negatively affected their sports performance.

Abstract:
The goal in doing this study has been studying public interpretations of media content in the commercials that this study uses. The analysis was based on two TV commercials for feminine hygiene products. Initially, they seemed to differ from each other, but soon the question whether or not they in fact did convey the same underlying message was raised. The theoretical premises on which the study was founded on are the gender perspective in advertising and the social construction of gender. To reveal the hidden signs appearing in these commercials and to find out their meanings, we used the method of semiotic analysis. To further find out how the audience interpreted the films and their possible messages, we performed qualitative interviews, followed by a reception analysis of these. The result we reached using the latter method is not unambiguous, but we were able to highlight the differences as well as to what degree personal interpretation influences people.

This research is concerned with menstruation as it is experienced and presented by women involved in feminist groups in Montreal. Biomedical discourse hegemony in the production of a discourse on women's body has been sometimes reinforced and sometimes questioned by feminist movements. The interviews reveal that despite the impact of feminist discourses, women's experience seems deeply influenced by biomedical and hygienist discourses and by negative stereotypes commonly found in society at large. Feminist discourses allow these women to open spaces of freedom and criticism in their practices and thoughts regarding menstruation.

Armstrong, Gregory Martin. "Investigations into inflammation and apoptosis in the 'perimenstrual' human endometrium and a mouse model of menstruation." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25709.

Full text
Abstract:
Menstruation is triggered by a fall in circulating progesterone (P4), and to a lesser extent, oestradiol (E2) concentrations, and characterised by classical inflammatory features in the endometrium: breakdown of the basal lamina, tissue oedema and an influx of migratory leucocytes. During and following menstruation, endometrial inflammation is resolved and the endometrium is repaired. The successful resolution of acute inflammation in other tissues involves apoptosis and the phagocytic clearance of apoptotic cells. Human endometrial tissues were collected with informed patient consent and local research ethics committee approval. C57Bl/6 mice underwent an induced menstruation protocol (via sequential E2 and P4 exposure followed by P4 withdrawal), both with and without experimental inhibition of apoptosis (using the pan-caspase inhibitor, Q-VD-OPh). Coordinated apoptosis and neutrophil recruitment were hypothesised to be components of the menstrual event and to precede menstrual shedding in the human endometrium. Immunoreactivity histoscoring for cleaved caspase-3 (CC3) revealed extensive apoptosis in the normal human endometrium early in the ‘perimenstrual’ period, and careful stereological delineation of neutrophil (elastase+) recruitment showed a significant influx coincident with menstrual tissue breakdown. Apoptosis and neutrophil recruitment were hypothesised to follow similar courses in the endometria of mice undergoing an induced menstruation protocol, recapitulating human menstrual events. Immunoreactivity histoscoring for CC3 and stereological investigation into neutrophil (Ly6G+) recruitment in mouse endometrial tissues revealed almost identical extents and timings of apoptosis and neutrophil recruitment in women. Whole genome array evidence of differential apoptosis-related gene transcription in the endometria of women with heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) compared to those of women with normal menstrual bleeding (NMB) led to the hypothesis that apoptosis may be dysregulated in women with HMB and that perhaps this may delay timely repair of the endometrium and lead to prolonged bleeding in consequence. Candidate differentially-regulated gene transcripts identified by the whole genome array were validated by means of RT-qPCR, although immunoreactivity histoscoring for CC3 did not reveal any differences in apoptosis or its localisation between women with NMB and HMB at the menstrual cycle time-points examined. Building on evidence of apoptotic transcriptional dysregulation in the endometria of women with HMB, it was hypothesised that experimental inhibition of apoptosis (via Q-VD-OPh) in a mouse model of induced menstruation could delay endometrial repair and delay resolution of endometrial inflammation. Some evidence of delayed early repair was obtained, alongside the discoveries of delayed inflammatory gene transcription and increased decidual proliferation (BrdU+) in apoptosis-inhibited mice. Apoptosis precedes the classical inflammatory features of menstruation in the human and mouse endometrium, with inhibition of apoptosis in the latter altering repair and the inflammatory micro-environment. An apoptosis-inhibited mouse model of menstruation may therefore represent a viable model for the further study of heavy menstrual bleeding.

Abstract:
Magister Artium (Psychology) - MA(Psych)
Menstruation is a normal physiological process that has been distorted and riddled with negative connotations. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the biological factor, age at menarche, influences the attitudes and beliefs of the experience of menstruation; whether the psychological factor, preparedness, has an impact on the attitudes and beliefs of the experience of menstruation; and whether the socio-cultural factor, population group, affects the attitudes and beliefs of the experience of menstruation. The biopsychosocial model was used to guide this study as it examined the biological, psychological and socio-cultural factors that impact the attitudes and beliefs of the experience of menstruation. In this quantitative study, simple random sampling was used to recruit a sample of 200 female students from the University of the Western Cape, ages 18-21 years. Surveys containing biographic information as well as questions from the Beliefs and Attitudes Towards Menstruation questionnaire (BATM) were administered. The results indicated that there were significant associations between population group and level of secrecy as well as level of preparedness and level of pleasantness, annoyance and disability associated with menstruation. Results also revealed significant differences between normal and late onset of menarche on the level of disability associated with menstruation. Ethical guidelines stipulated by the University of the Western Cape were strictly adhered to. Research focusing on the attitudes and beliefs of the experience of menstruation will contribute to the knowledge base of menstruation in the South African context, as well as informing interventions which focus on educating women about menstruation so as to promote positive attitudes and prevent forms of social control imposed on women because of menstruation.

Abstract:
This study analyzes the intersection of multiple cultural themes and discourses present in discussion of the alternative menstrual hygiene product, the menstrual cup. Through the qualitative research methods of first-person interviewing and autoethnography, the study forms the characteristics of the American menstrual cultural model and how the model upheld by menstrual cup users differs from it. The study finds that access to alternative channels of information and an innate or learned acceptance of the body and bodily processes were indicators of whether or not an individual would be receptive to the cup. The mainstream consciousness was unlikely to foster bodily acceptance. Bodily acceptance was more likely encountered in individuals with interests invested in activities and lifestyle practices more likely to be labeled “alternative.” Using the cup also had a positive feedback effect in that it habituated users to and made them feel more comfortable with their bodies.

Matteson, Emily G. "Discourses of Menstruation: Public and Private Formations of Female Identity." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2014. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/432.

Full text
Abstract:
Menstruation is a biological process, but it is also laden with cultrual meanings that produce society's understandings of both the body and "womanhood." The experiences of those who menstruate both reveal and inform the ways that culture mediates the relationships between biology, the body, sex, and gender. This study examines the ways that students at Scripps College, a women's college in Claremont, CA, understand and experience menstruation as part of living in an environment where the majority of students identify as female. Through ethnographic interviews, I demonstrate the ways that students use menstruation to re-envision distinctions between public and private spheres, to evaluate their relationships with other people, to gain knowledge about the body, and to question what it means to claim a female identity. The discourses of menstruation at Scripps reveal that although there is a dominant construction of the women's college as an "ideal women's space," in practice students continue to adhere to sociocultural restrictions placed on the menstruating female body, even as they attempt to create a more positive discourse.

Abstract:
Female specific experiences of migration arelacking in mainstream migration studies, even though women make up almost half of the demographic of migrating people. Based on qualitative narrative interviews with six women the primary aim of this thesis is to show how the women negotiated their migrations from a primarily embodied theoretical approach which focuses on feelings in and ofthe body in relation to menstruation within the context of migration. The importance of viewing context or rather situationas constitutive for how women can ‘be’ or ‘not be’ women is decisive for the embodiment approach and provides an understanding for the prescriptive nature of norms in general and gender norms in particular. Overall, the situation of migration positioned the female gender norm and the innate bodily function of menstruation as a counterforce of agency for the women, severely limiting their scopes of agency leading to fear, hyper vigilance and self-policingin a manner that the women did not experience was present for men surrounding them. The additional mental strain that menstruation placedon the women severely aggravated their experiences of migration, a mental strain that was solely connected to fear in relation to their bodies.

Abstract:
Short and long term clinical outcomes following endometrial ablation in women with heavy menstrual bleeding. Randomised trials evaluating second generation endometrial ablation techniques are discussed and critically reviewed in this thesis. Patterns of referral, socio-demographic and clinical details, primary care treatment, of women referred with heavy menstrual loss are also considered as are three randomised trials of surgical treatments for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding. Microwave endometrial ablation (MEATM) and thermal balloon ablation (TBall) both achieved high levels of satisfaction (-1%, 95% CI (-11, 9)). Microwave had a significantly shorter operating time, reduced usage of anti-emetics and opiate analgesia, increased discharge by six hours and fewer device failures. Comparing MEA™ in the postmenstrual phase to MEA™ following standard drug based endometrial preparation there was no significant difference at five years in menstrual outcomes, health related quality of life, or need for subsequent treatment Ten years following MEATM or transcervical resection of the endometrium (TCRE), the hysterectomy rate after ten years was significantly different with 17% in the MEATM and 28% in the TCRE arm (95% CI -0.21, -0.13). In conclusion primary care guidelines should be followed whilst establishing patient preference prior to referral to secondary care. Microwave ablation has been shown to be an effective treatment in the short, medium and long-term. It can successfully be performed in an outpatient setting in the post menstrual phase and is acceptable under local anaesthesia.

Abstract:
This thesis tries trough qualitative analyzes to illuminate advertising and its didactic aspects, how menstruation and menstruating women are portrayed over time. The method underlying the survey is didactic, diachronic comparative and hermeneutic. There will also be a feminist point of view on the material. The issue is about how the advertisement presents sanitary products and menstruation and how a menstruating woman is portrayed. The conclusion is that the image of a menstruating woman changes slightly while consolidating the ethos that menstruation should not be visible. The menstruating woman is in constant motion, always fresh and fragrant.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between United States and French cultural expectations and symptoms of menstruation. The study works first to demonstrate that the French culture holds a more positive view of menstruation and the United States a more negative one. This study then proposes the following hypotheses: 1) United States women will report more PMS and other debilitating symptoms, while French women will report less 2) Older, French, menstruating women will rate higher on positive items than any other category of women in France and the United States 3) Younger, French and U.S. American women will rate similar experiences and expectations of menstruation, due to the globalization of cultures. Finally, the study proposes establishing scales that are more multiculturalfriendly.

Abstract:

Faust, Max. "Menstruation Regulation: A Feminist Critique of Menstrual Product Brands on Instagram." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2020. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/576.

Full text
Abstract:
Much research about advertisements for menstrual products reveals the ways in which such advertising perpetuates shame and reinforces unrealistic ideals of femininity and womanhood. This study aims to examine the content of Instagram posts by four different menstrual product brands in hopes of understanding how these functions may or may not be carried out by social media posts by these brands as well. Building on the body of research about menstrual shame and advertising, I specifically ask: How do the Instagram pages for four menstrual product brands dissuade individuality; how do they prescribe femininity; and how do these functions differ across brands? From a liberal feminist perspective, the examined media exhibits some signs of progress—such as better racial representation—but overall maintains the status quo as to who should be using which products, what womanhood means, and what menstruation entails. These findings indicate that within menstrual product advertising, harmful gender, ability, race, class, and wealth stereotypes continue. Further research of a broader scope is needed to investigate changes on a larger scale, such as within advertising on other platforms and by more brands.

Khamlichi, Shimu. "Medicalising menstruation : the case of premenstrual dysphoric disorder and DSM 5." Thesis, University of East London, 2013. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/3495/.

Full text
Abstract:
The phenomenon of ‘premenstrual syndrome’ has attracted considerable attention during the early half of the twentieth century. Over the years, medical researchers and physicians have concluded that premenstrual changes could cause women severe distress and impair their ability to function at work and at home. In 1994, the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) (American Psychiatric Association 1994) used the term ‘premenstrual dysphoric disorder’ (PMDD) to refer to these premenstrual changes. At present, PMDD is being proposed for inclusion as a new category in DSM 5, due for release in May 2013. This inclusion means women who experience premenstrual changes could be classified with a mental disorder. This study aimed to explore how premenstrual changes evolved from a normal biological fact of life into a psychiatric disorder. The study examined the way premenstrual changes have been constructed in psychiatric and psychological literature. The study was informed by a critical realist epistemology and adopted a Foucauldian discourse analysis methodology. The study took a genealogical approach to explore the discursive and nondiscursive practices that have influenced the medicalisation of premenstrual changes in DSM. The study found three interrelated ‘truths’ about women’s premenstrual changes that have been produced and disseminated by psychiatrists and psychologists to reify PMDD as a psychiatric problem. Psychiatrist and psychologists have drawn on the discourses of science and medicine to render these constructions or ‘truths’ intelligible. The literature focused primarily on negative mood changes and failed to consider positive premenstrual experiences that many women report. The literature did not consider premenstrual experiences from a nonbiomedical perspective and neglected the role that relational, social, economic, cultural and structural factors play in contributing to or exacerbating premenstrual experiences. This means that the published research has excluded aspects of premenstrual experiences that could stand in contrast to the dominant accounts reported throughout the literature. The study found that the construct of PMDD taps into powerful cultural ideas about what it means to be a woman and what is considered feminine. The study shows that the concept of PMDD is grounded in a historical tradition of problematizing menstruation. This increased tendency to view menstruation or aspects of menstruation as problematic does not benefit women. We must recognise that the way we construct menstruation or menstrual cycle experiences has an effect on the way we view women and the way we treat them. The inclusion of PMDD may devalue women and result in the discrimination, marginalization, and stigmatization of women. This study recommends that the category of PMDD be excluded from DSM 5. Recommendations for clinical practice and further research are suggested.

Abstract:
This research examined husband and wife attitudes toward menstruation and how these attitudes related to certain behaviors within marriage. The sample consisted of 48 Married couples, some living in Davis, California and some living in Salt Lake City, Utah . Specifically, four objectives were persued: Assess husbands' and wives' perceptions of how behaviors within marriage vary over the wives' menstrual cycles. Assess husbands' and wives' attitudes toward menstruation. Examine how husband's and wives' attitudes toward menstruation might be associated with perceptions of how behaviors within marriage vary over the wives' menstrual cycles. Examine how wives' perceptions of differences in behavior over the menstrual cycle are associated with their reporting of perceived menstrual symptomology. It was discovered that husbands and wives had varying attitudes toward menstruation and these attitudes were related to their reporting of the occurrence of certain male and female behaviors within marriage. Husbands and wives who had more stereotypic attitudes toward menstruation reported greater behavior change in themselves and their spouses due to menstruation within marriage than those who had less stereotypic attitudes . In addition. the wives' reporting of menstrual symptomotology was related to their reporting of behavior change in marriage due to their menstrual period. Women who reported the greatest menstrual symptomotology also reported the greatest amount of behavior change within marriage due to menstruation.

Abstract:
During recent years the stigmatised phenomenon of menstruation has received increased attention, revealing various challenges faced by menstruating women and girls. The prevalence of these have shown to be particularly profound in low- and middle-income countries. Despite an enhanced understanding of how menstruators may be affected by having their periods the focus within the growing body of literature on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) remains narrow, often focusing solely on the practical aspects of MHM, whilst failing to acknowledge the social dimensions of menstruating. Women who work have been notably overlooked within the existing research, which almost exclusively has targeted schoolgirls. This study aims to widen the understanding of MHM, entailing both social and practical aspects. It also seeks to shed light on the experiences of working women, as a previously neglected group. To investigate how menstruation may affect women within their working environment, a field study with respondent interviews was conducted in Accra, Ghana. The narratives of the respondents, consisting of women working within the informal sector at markets, disclosed challenges that relate both to the social and practical aspects of MHM. The results point to the continued need for including working women in the research on MHM. It also demonstrates how practical and social aspects overlap and thus needs to be linked to gain a full understanding of menstruation and how it affects the menstruator.
