Montgomery, Natalie D. "Tensions Along the Path Towards Mental Health Literacy for New Immigrant Mothers: Perspectives on Mental Health and Mental Illness." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/30728.

Full text
Abstract:
New immigrants to Canada are identified as a vulnerable population in mental health and, as a result, organizations are signaling the need to enhance their mental health supports. The research uses focus groups and questions based on the messaging of a Canadian school mental health program to understand how new immigrant mothers interpret and develop key aspects of their mental health literacy and how they attain parent empowerment. A thematic assessment of the knowledge, interpretation, action and decision-making of the study participants (n=7), all recent immigrants to Canada and mothers of high school students, shows that new immigrant mothers are prepared to follow a path towards mental health literacy. At the same time, however, there are barriers that can block progression towards mental health literacy for this audience. These findings are supported by three umbrella themes: the first main theme “home as haven” espouses maternal roles in mental health maintenance such as protector and communicator, the second main theme “knowledge versus suspicions of mental health and mental illness” represents informed views and support of mental illness and myths and illusions of mental illness, and the third main theme, “additional barriers to mental health literacy” includes the hardships of immigration and fear of knowledge. The study concludes that new immigrant mothers appreciate the importance of fostering mental health understanding and discussion with their children at the same time that they encounter obstacles to the advancement of their mental health literacy. This study is relevant to the field of communication in that it demonstrates the experience of new immigrant mothers as a secondary audience in mental health programming. As the caregivers of their children, they are in position to enforce the messages and health maintenance behaviours of a school-based mental health program aimed at adolescents.

Mueller, J. "Parents' communication to their primary school-aged children about mental health and ill-health." Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2012. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/11175/.

Full text
Abstract:
Although it is understood that stigma about mental ill-health emerges in middle childhood, and that parental communications are highly influential in children’s developing attitudes, almost nothing is known about the messages parents communicate to young children about mental health problems and how these might contribute to the perpetuation of stigma. This study aimed to address this gap in the literature by exploring parents' communications to their primary-school aged children around mental health and ill-health. Semi structured interviews were carried out with ten parents of children aged 7-11. Data collection and analysis was performed according to a Grounded Theory approach; a theoretical model was developed. The model highlights factors that govern parents’ communications to children about mental health issues, and the impact of this on communication purpose and approach. Parents’ communications were governed by the extent to which parents’ representations of ‘Them’ (mental illness) and ‘Us’ (mental health) overlapped or remained distinct. Communications about mental health were deliberate, comfortable, and aimed to promote child wellbeing, whilst unconscious processes driven by taboo meant communications about mental illness were characterized by avoidance, awkwardness, and ambivalence. Factors such as parent experiences, communication context, and child characteristics, fluidly influenced parents’ overlap of ‘Them’ and ‘Us’, and hence the purpose and approach of their communications to their children. Parents’ context-dependent conceptualizations of mental health and ill-health mean children are receiving complex verbal and non-verbal messages from parents, which may contribute to children’s development of stigmatized views via conscious and unconscious processes. Interventions and policy that harness parents’ existing understandings of mental wellbeing to promote a spectrum model of mental health and ill-health may lead to more open parent-child communication, increased help-seeking, and reduced stigma.

Walsh, Audra St John. "School Psychologists' Communication and Collaboration with Community-Based Mental Health Professionals." Scholar Commons, 2011. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3401.

Full text
Abstract:
Although collaboration between school psychologists and community-based mental health professionals is essential in the provision of comprehensive and effective mental health services for youth with intensive mental health needs, youth may not receive the full benefit of these coordinated efforts, as collaboration may not occur as often as it should. This study investigated the frequency of communication and collaboration between school- and community-based professionals, the purposes and methods of communication, and the benefits and barriers to collaboration. Survey data from 80 members of the Florida Association of School Psychologists were collected and analyzed. Forty-three percent of school psychologists reported communicating and collaborating with community-based mental health professionals between one and four times a year. Findings indicated that school psychologists prefer to communicate through phone calls, written reports, and face-to-face discussion; they also perceive these methods of communication to be most effective. Barriers to collaboration included limited accessibility of community professionals and lack of time to collaborate. A significant relationship was found in communication frequency and number of professional development hours received related to mental health. Implications of these findings are discussed in relation to developing strategies for practitioners and trainers of school psychologists aimed at optimizing the mental health of youth.

DeLenardo, Samantha. "Game Changer: Mental Health Strategic Communication Plan for Varsity Football Players." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/24356.

Full text
Abstract:
In the past two years, six National Football League players have died by suicide. Investigations into most of the deaths revealed that the players suffered from brain damage likely caused by repeated concussions. As is the case with many health issues, tragedy often precedes action; the suicides of these high profile football stars have catalyzed action on concussion policy and practice, as well as opened up the conversation about the overall mental health of athletes. This thesis joins the conversation around mental health and athletes, specifically Canadian varsity football players. Mental health problems and illnesses are presented as especially common, affecting about 1 in 5 Canadians. That is not to underestimate the severity of mental illnesses, which can deteriorate an individual’s quality of life, significantly impact friends and family and, in the most severe cases, also lead to death by suicide. That said, this thesis adopts a theoretical perspective that focuses on the promotion and protection of good mental health. This thesis is primarily concerned with investigating the social, political, and external factors that negatively impact how football players conceptualize mental health and mental illness, and also the recommended behaviour to seek professional help if needed. The growing body of research concerning the negative impact of mental illness stigma is compelling and leaves no doubt that stigma is a significant barrier to recovery. This thesis explores the stigma process as well as its social function in groups. Next, it investigates how the already powerful stigma around mental illness is further exacerbated by gender and more specifically, how traditional masculine ideology (i.e. men should be strong and powerful) conflicts with stereotypical beliefs about mentally ill people (i.e. weak and/or incompetent). Gender and health are further linked in terms of behaviour. In other words, rejecting health behaviours becomes a strategy some men utilize to project their masculinity, paradoxically contributing to the creation or worsening of many health problems. A health behaviour that is explored in detail is psychological help-seeking, and the psychosocial processes of help-seeking, which are also mainly regulated by masculinity. An overview of the most common mental health problems and illnesses found in male varsity athletes is provided. All of the above components are then applied to the unique context of varsity football players. The thesis draws on the literature as well as qualitative interview data that explores the experiences of 8 varsity football players at the University of Ottawa. Regarding mental health promotion, the findings show that football players may require adapted communication approaches. To that end, the thesis transitions into an early-stage health communication plan supported by the literature and the primary data. The plan proposes overall outcomes, short term/intermediate objectives, a communication strategy, and a tactical approach. Next, a web-based health resource is suggested as a primary communication vehicle and is outlined in detail. The plan then suggests potential partnerships for extending the strategic communication plan’s reach and credibility. This is followed by suggestions for evaluating both the short term/intermediate objectives as well as the strategic communication plan’s overall impact. This thesis concludes with a chapter exploring the contributions lifted from the eight qualitative interviews, as well as suggested directions for research, policy and practice.

Seibel, Karen R. "The Relationship Between Congruence Among Communication Channels and Degree of Mental Health." DigitalCommons@USU, 1988. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/6003.

Full text
Abstract:
Writers from a number of theoretical backgrounds have asserted that agreement in the emotional messages conveyed by various verbal and nonverbal communication channels is related to the communicator's psychological health. If this conjecture is accurate, then congruence among communication channels could be used as a behaviorally based assessment tool. However, empirical research to test this theoretical and clinical assumption is relatively lacking. The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that individuals who display congruence (agreement) between verbal (language), verbal/vocal (language plus paralinguistic cues, or speech) and nonverbal (facial) channels of communication will show a greater degree of mental health than will individuals who display incongruence. "Degree of mental health" was operationally defined as an individual's scores on the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI). Fifty-six subjects were administrated the POI and were interviewed on videotape. Three pairs of judges rated the videotapes for the affects communicated in the video channel (picture only), the audio channel (sound only), and the transcript channel (the subject's words transcribed onto paper). Comparisons of affect ratings across channels yielded difference scores, resulting in measures of various types of congruence. Analyses of variance were carried out with difference scores as independent variables and and overall POI score as the dependent variable. No significant results were obtained. Multivariate analyses of the POI subscales were also performed, again with nonsignificant findings. Alternative explanations of the congruence phenomenon and methodological limitations are presented. Implications for the clinical utility of congruence and for future research are discussed.

Zhu, Ge. "Understanding utilization of mental health services among Chinese international students." Thesis, Kansas State University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2097/32678.

Full text
Abstract:
Master of Science<br>Journalism and Mass Communications<br>Nancy W. Muturi<br>Background: Depressive and anxiety disorders are common mental health disorders that threaten the well-being of ethnic minorities. Asian international students are suggested experience higher level of depression and anxiety, but less likely to use mental health services than students in general. This study examines factors that motivate and impede Chinese international students from seeking college counseling services from the perspective of health communication. Method: An online, self-administered questionnaire was conducted among a randomized sample of 150 Chinese international students from a Mid-Western university. The questionnaire was structured with key variables derived from the Health Belief Model (HBM) and the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), such as perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, and self-efficacy of using counseling services. Key variables are measured by 5-point Likert scale. Data analysis was conducted with Pearson’s correlation and multiple linear regression. Results: Chinese international students’ counseling seeking behavior is influenced by their perceived self-efficacy and external impediments of using counseling services. Perceived knowledge of mental health disorders and counseling contribute significantly to Chinese international perceived self-efficacy of using counseling services; however, perceived knowledge of the two items are generally low. The adherence of Asian cultural values, especially to collectivism and emotional self-control, contribute significantly to Chinese international students’ negative perceptions of counseling. Conclusion: College counseling services should conduct health communication campaigns that aim at improving Asian international students’ knowledge of depression/anxiety and psychological counseling, in order to encourage them to engage in college counseling system. College counseling services should also enhance the cultural sensitivity of counselors, and provide culture-matched counseling services to Asian international students.

Buechner, Barton David. "Contextual mentoring of student veterans| A communication perspective." Thesis, Fielding Graduate University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3615729.

Full text
Abstract:
<p> Nearly two million combat veterans are now in various stages of the process of returning from service and entering higher education using the post-9/11 GI Bill. Who is guiding and advising them in the process of this transition, and how are they doing it? To help answer this question, this qualitative phenomenological study examines the narratives of successful student veterans for ways that mentors played a role in their transition from military service to academia. The study was informed by an examination of relevant literature, including individual mentoring and group mentoring; medical and non-medical readjustment counseling for returning combat veterans; various branches of psychology, communication, social construction, and warrior mythology and storytelling. Narrative data were examined using a composite metatheoretical model drawing on domains of human experience (Shay, 2010), integral theory and the all quadrants, all levels (AQAL) model (Wilber, 2006), and the coordinated management of meaning theory of social construction in communication (Pearce, 2008). This analysis revealed patterns of multiple mentor interaction across various social worlds that helped them to make meaning from their experiences in transition, and bridge between different social contexts of home, military, and school. An unexpected but significant finding was the presence and role of traumatic experiences fitting the description of &ldquo;moral injury&rdquo; (Drescher et al., 2011) or &ldquo;psychic wounding&rdquo; (Malabou, 2012) as linked to the episodes of being mentored while making meaning of these experiences. This suggests the relationship of coordinated mentor communications to the phenomenon of posttraumatic growth, and the particular attunement of adult education (andragogy) as enabling context. Applying these findings to the composite four-quadrant model resulted in an integrated conceptual model of &ldquo;contextual mentoring,&rdquo; which provides a framework to consider the way coordinated mentor influences may act as mediating structures to support the development or transformation of returning veterans during their transition in higher education.</p><p> <i>Keywords:</i> veterans, mentoring, group mentoring, posttraumatic growth, moral injury, phenomenology, communication, coordinated management of meaning (CMM), social construction of reality, adult learning, andragogy, mediating structures.</p>

Thesis, State University of New York at Buffalo, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10127748.

Full text
Abstract:
<p>Research has shown that the effects of maternal stress, alcohol use, and depression can have lasting effects on offspring. These effects can lead to negative outcomes with her daughter, specifically depression and substance use. These compounding issues can then lead to communication issues between the mother/daughter pair. This secondary data analysis study of a longitudinal community dyadic sample of 811 mothers and daughter pairs sought to determine the impact of these negative maternal effects on daughter depression, alcohol use, communication between the pair, and later risky sexual behavior. Using regression analysis with mediation, results indicated that a relationship exists between mother alcohol use and daughter risky sexual behavior only when daughter alcohol use was present. High communication with the mother lead to a decrease in daughter depression. Mother depression predicted daughter depression whereas mother alcohol use predicted daughter alcohol use and daughter depression. While a negative outcome, risky sexual behavior can be seen as a coping strategy for daughters? experiencing a difficult environment and this coping mechanism may bring them temporary feelings of love and importance.

Abstract:
<p> This study examined the communicative construction of mental health in correctional work. Using narrative interviews with 25 current and former correctional officers, I explore how macro, meso, and micro D/discourses both enable and constrain communication and action around mental health for correctional employees. The findings suggest that larger cultural Discourses related to masculinity, bounded rationality, and personal responsibility, meso discourses related to organizational expectations, and daily micro-talk about mental health and resources such as the Employee Assistance Program, primarily create and sustain communication barriers that limit correctional workers from communicating about or seeking help for mental health challenges. From a critical perspective, D/discourses related to power and control privileged the rational experiences of workers and marginalized the emotional/physical experiences, a practice I argue has significant implications for the health and well-being of workers. </p><p>

Abstract:
The transitional period of attending college marks a shift towards personal independence for students. The management of conversational topics requires students to determine how they share information. Management of mental health information is a critical topic that cannot be overlooked during these re-negotiation periods. The goal of this study was to examine how the five privacy rule development criteria (culture, context, motivation, risk/benefit gender) of Communication Privacy Management Theory predict a college student’s likelihood to reveal a mental health problem to their instructor. Using multiple regression, bivariate linear regression, and factorial ANOVA, this study revealed that the CPM rule development criteria variables (culture, context, motivation, and gender) are predictors of college students disclosing a mental health problem to their instructors. Findings suggest that predictors of privacy management center on communication and relational factors between students and instructors as well as perceptions of an open conversation-oriented classroom culture, and gender.

Abstract:
Research has shown African Americans experience mental health issues at the same rate as the general population but seek treatment at only one-third that rate. Eleven African American low-income urban community leaders with basic training in mental health issues were interviewed about their perceptions of African American patterns of communication on mental health issues. Findings included a general consensus that the topic is generally not discussed, although passing references to a party’s perceived mental illness may be made using humor. When such discussion does take place, it happens only in a “safe space” with a trusted dialogue partner. Non-verbal cues are an important element of these conversations, as are non-judgmental, attentive and purposeful listening. The participants report that community members who did not receive the basic mental health training speak with great disparagement of those they perceive to be mentally ill.

Abstract:
In 2006, a new Government policy for mental health “A Vision for Change” was endorsed and is currently in the seventh year of implementation. The policy describes a comprehensive framework for building and fostering positive mental health across the entire community and for providing accessible, community based, specialist services for people with mental illness. The implementation of the policy and turning “Vision for Change” into reality has been problematic with considerable criticism from stakeholders concerning slow and disjointed implementation. This study provides information on three key community mental health service settings, namely Day Hospitals, Day Centres and 24 Hour Community Residences at a national level. The research looks at aims and functions, patient profiles, therapeutic activities, effectiveness of key communication networks and gains an insight from staff on what has changed on the ground over the past seven years. Issues identified from the three service settings pertain to all. Participants indicated that the recovery ethos appears to have moved to a more central role in patient care in the community but acknowledged that the challenge of integrating recovery principles in clinical practice remains present. The importance of individual care planning appears to be recognised in community services and respondents indicated that efforts are being made to ensure service user involvement. There were differences between „staff views‟ and „advocate views‟ on a number of aspects of service provision. This is the first Irish study of its kind to examine service provision across the three main community mental health settings in one study. These services represent a huge investment in resources both on a monetary and human level. This study has examined the challenges and key issues which are applicable and impacting on all three types of service provision. It has also provided information on the elements of positive change, which are slowly embedding themselves in service provision such as the importance of the centricity of the service user and the promotion of a recovery ethos.

Abstract:
<p> The posttest only experimental design study was conducted to examine if exposure to neutral or negative portrayals of mental illness in media influences viewers&rsquo; attitudes on mental illness. Participants were 22 self-selected students from a private, co-educational university in an urban area of the east south-central region of the United States. Two groups watched one of two movies that were pre-determined to be reflective of American culture and mental illness (i.e., <i>Lars and the Real Girl and Drive</i>). Data was collected by administering Community Attitudes Toward Mental Illness (CAMI) and a demographic questionnaire. An independent t-test was used to determine if CAMI subscales varied because of the movie presented. Participants who watched the movie portraying mental illness in a negative context were predicted to have higher social restrictiveness and authoritarianism subscale scores, and those who watched the movie portraying mental illness in a neutral context were predicted to have higher benevolence and CMHI subscale scores. However, there was not a significant difference on any subscales scores at <i> p</i> = .05 between the movies presented to each group. Implications are discussed.</p>

Abstract:
More celebrities have been opening up about the mental illness (MI) journey, despite its stigmatized status in society. This shift has become popular with some rap artists, including Kanye West, Logic, and NF. However, little research exists on mental health rhetoric in the rap industry. In this project, I contributed to filling this gap by looking at the lyrics of American rapper, NF. Because his music is rising popularity and heavily focused on MI experience, NF was a worthy rhetor to study. I used Fantasy Theme Analysis to discover the fantasy themes present in NF’s album The Search. These fantasy themes present bind together to create a rhetorical vision of how NF experiences an internal war because of his MI. NF’s experiences may be shared by his listeners that also deal with the complexities of MI and its associated stigma. By talking about his MI experiences openly and honestly, NF and other celebrities can use their public platform to increase feelings of belongingness and reduce feelings of self-stigma.

Abstract:
When children are detained and enter the foster care system, social workers screen them to determine if mental health services are needed. Formal referrals to mental health providers are made, however there is a significant wait time between referral and service delivery. The focus of this study was to explore these barriers to mental health services in an effort to identify approaches that might improve service access. Qualitative face-to-face interviews were conducted with key stakeholders using an Ecological Systems Theory to fashion a hermeneutic dialect and a joint construct toward a shared action plan. Data was collected from the interviews and thematically analyzed. The project informs service delivery systems of mental health for children and adults, both for micro and macro practice, by highlighting the need for increased collaboration between agencies and growing family engagement and empowerment to reduce stigma. These efforts will improve communication, define expectations, and diminish silos. The project also contributes to child welfare practices and policies for referrals of children’s mental health services by noting the need for an embedded mental health therapist within child welfare to accept referrals for services; the addition of one study site contractual children’s mental health service provider in the rural county that will accept referrals for children and families. In summary, the study identifies strategies to reduce wait time for service delivery, how those services are best accessed, as well as efforts to better engage families in treatment.

Abstract:
The current study explores the experiences of mental health care professionals in Sweden who conduct therapy with the assistance of an interpreter. Seven participants took part in semi-structured interviews that were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (Smith, 1996). Three main themes emerged from the analysis of the interview transcripts: (1) communication and translation - highlighting the communicative challenges and benefits that arise when using an interpreter, (2) the interpreter as a person and as a professional - describing the variation of interpreters in terms of behavior, personality, roles, and professionalism, and their impact on psychological treatment, and (3) dynamics and relations - featuring the interpreter’s impact on the dynamics and the process of building a patient-therapist alliance. The results show that all participants find it difficult to determine the accuracy of the translation, and several techniques used by the clinician to ensure a correct translation were pointed out. Moreover, findings highlight the essentiality of non-verbal cues and body language in communication and that the role and the behavior, in addition to several personal factors of the interpreter has an impact on the patient-therapist alliance and therapy dynamics. In addition, the study illuminates the patient’s impact on the interpreter as many interpreters themselves have been through traumatic experiences, which in turn may affect the therapeutic process. The findings of the current study show how important it is for clinicians, mental health services, and interpreting services to take the interpreters’ impact on the clinician, the patient, and the therapeutic outcome  into account. The study aims to contribute to a better understanding of clinicians’ experiences of working with interpreters to improve the use of - and collaboration with - interpreters and thereby raise the standard of psychological treatment for refugees and asylum seekers.

Abstract:
<p>Incivility is a low-level form of violence that has been found to threaten safety and has gained increasing attention from healthcare leaders. Incivility at work causes distractions and threatens the culture of safety. Locations providing mental health services are among such high-risk areas. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a nurse leader&rsquo;s educational approach to improve civility in the mental health (MH) nursing workplace using assertiveness training with role-play. </p><p> The civility score in this study was measured by staffs&rsquo; perceptions of eight items: respect; conflict resolution; cooperation; anti-discrimination; value differences; diversity acceptance; personal interest; and reliability of team members. In this study, the principal investigator (PI), a MH nurse leader, prepared and implemented a six-month plan of evidence-based actions intended to improve civility and to strengthen the sense of community. </p><p> Role-play exercises were included in assertiveness training sessions. Personalized brochures that summarized information and future direction for improving civility were prepared and distributed. </p><p> Civility awareness and assertiveness were reinforced by sharing literature, facilitating discussions, and practicing occasional role-plays to problem-solve past and current incivilities as they surfaced. Follow-up measurements showed a rapid and sharp increase in civility, with improved scores for each of the eight items. These findings support continued use of assertiveness training with role-play as an effective approach for improving civility in a culturally diverse MH nursing staff. Limitations of this study are discussed. </p>

Sheff, Sarah Elizabeth. "“I WANT TO FEEL WHAT THEY FEEL”: EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF EMOTIONAL FLOW IN NARRATIVE HEALTH BLOGS." UKnowledge, 2019. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/comm_etds/84.

Full text
Abstract:
Emotion has long been implemented in persuasive messages and campaigns to influence attitudes and health behavior. Research demonstrates that messages often evoke more than one emotion during and after exposure, and this was previously viewed as an undesirable outcome; however, the literature suggests that the intentional inclusion of multiple emotions, or emotional flow, could positively impact persuasive outcomes, such as attitudes and behavioral intention. The proposed study employs the concept of emotional flow, the intentional inclusion of more than one discrete emotion, in the context of narrative health blogs addressing mental health topics relevant to college students. The study specifically examines how the inclusion of a second discrete emotion influences transportation, identification, and attitudes. Participants were randomly assigned to one of six conditions and read a narrative health blog designed to evoke either one or two discrete emotions. After message exposure, they responded a brief survey to assess discrete emotions, transportation, identification, attitudes, and demographics. Data were analyzed using ANOVAs and ANCOVAs. The findings revealed that although the narratives elicited moderate levels of transportation and identification, there were not significant difference between conditions. Theoretical and practical implications for the study of narratives and emotional flow are discussed, in addition to practical implications for studying mental health.

Fausset, Cara Bailey. "Comprehension of health risk probabilities: the roles of age, numeracy, format, and mental representation." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/44832.

Full text
Abstract:
Probabilities, an essential dimension of risk communication, can be presented in various formats including frequencies (e.g., 1 in 10), percentages (e.g., 10%), or verbal phrases (e.g., unlikely); the literature is mixed concerning which format best supports comprehension. Additionally, it is not well understood how people who vary in their level of numeracy understand those probabilities. The goal of the present three-phase within-participant study was to understand how the factors of format and numeracy influence comprehension and mental representations of probabilities for younger and older adults. Overall, the results of this research clearly indicated that comprehension and mental representation of health risk probabilities are influenced by format, age, and numeracy. To best support comprehension and comparison of health risk probabilities for younger adults and healthy older adults with varying numeracy, percent format should be used.

Abstract:
The prevailing approach to managing persons with criminal histories involves community supervision professionals like probation and parole officers partnering with other mental health providers to address clients’ needs. The relationships between individual professionals are seldom researched, though, and the current study aims to address this deficit in the empirical literature. This study utilized interviews about professionals’ perceptions of their work experiences, analyzed open-endedly to identify major themes. Mental health providers’ themes included appreciation and process of collaboration, individual characteristics and roles, characteristics of collaboration, elements of interprofessional relationships, and involvement of the courts. Community supervision professionals discussed issues pertaining to appreciation and process of collaboration, individual characteristics and roles, when conflict occurs, and the lack of basic knowledge about other professionals. Second, these partnerships were examined in light of interprofessional healthcare competencies. Themes identified here resembled healthcare values and ethics competencies and roles and responsibilities competencies; healthcare competencies regarding interprofessional communication and teamwork showed partial congruence with the current themes. Overall, interprofessional collaboration is valued. This research highlights the strengths of this type of interprofessional collaboration and offers suggestions for improving the efficacy of collaboration.

Plunkett, Alicia Renee'. "The Use of a Standardized System of Communication to Change the Perception of Handoff Communication in a Psychiatric Setting." ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/200.

Abstract:
The Use of a Standardized System of Communication to Change the Perception of Handoff Communication in a Psychiatric Setting by Alicia Renee' Plunkett MSN, Walden University 2007 MSHA, University of St. Francis, 2005 BSN, University of Memphis, 1995 Project Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Nursing Practice Walden University December 2014 The Joint Commission's review of sentinel events indicated that communication errors were the cause of over 65% of the sentinel events occurring in healthcare. The nursing profession has the responsibility of providing 24-hour care in an acute care setting and nurses are thus the primary participants in the handoff communication process. The purpose of this project was to assess the nursing staff's perception of handoff and to create a process for handoff communication. The most common framework for correcting communication errors in the literature is the Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation framework, which was used as a guide for developing a process and form for handoff in this facility. The "Clinical Handover Staff Survey" developed by O'Connell, MacDonald, and Kelly (2008) was modified for use in this study. This survey was distributed to nurses and mental health technicians in 2 acute care units within a standalone acute care psychiatric hospital (n = 140). The quantitative survey identified 3 common barriers to the process in this facility that included: (a) interruptions, (b) subjective terminology used to describe patients, and (c) the lack of confidence in the information presented. After the implementation of a new process and form, the staff members were resurveyed to measure their post implementation perceptions of the handoff process. In each of the 3 areas measured, the implementation of a new process and form allowed the facility to see changes in the staffs' perceptions of the handoff process. The changes seen in this facility further indicate the need for education, standardization, and a continued focus on improving and mastering the important task of handoff communication. Improving handoff communication prevents errors in patient care from occurring, therefore decreasing mortality and morbidity rates.

Reynolds, Lisa Marie. "Risk and the regulation of communication in relation to service users' and providers' experiences of forensic mental health care." Thesis, City University London, 2010. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/7783/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a qualitative study of service users’ and providers’ experiences of one UK inner city medium secure forensic mental health service. The study focused on the processes through which service users and providers attempted to manage their risk status. Aims The study had three main aims: 1. To develop a greater understanding of the complex formal and informal risk assessment and management processes operating in medium secure forensic mental health services. 2. To investigate the processes through which providers and users of medium secure services attempt to manage risk by balancing safety with the promotion of service user autonomy. 3. To generate recommendations derived from the study findings for the development of forensic mental health services. Methodology and methods A qualitative grounded theory methodology was used to explore forensic mental health care from the perspectives of service users and providers. Data were collected through lightly structured interviews and participant observation. Participant observation occurred over a period of eighteen month. Activities that took place within the service were observed and spontaneous informal conversations between the researcher and participants recorded. A theoretical sampling approach was adopted. Design, data collection and analysis were done in cycles so that the direction of inquiry could be grounded in participants’ concerns. Eventually, data collection and analysis were organised around the core category of the regulation of communication. Findings The regulation of communication was analysed in relation to three other important categories: the management of own risk status; the dynamics of self-forming groups; and external role expectations. It is hypothesized that the regulation of communication provided a means of attempting to meet competing role expectations and thus manage risk status. Conclusions The study provides an insight into how service users and providers situated within a complex and conflicted system may attempt to manage their risk status through regulating their communication. This strategy enables service users and providers to attempt to achieve the highly problematic mission of the forensic mental health service; to provide mental health care and public protection. However, organisational learning and risk management may be hampered by the regulation of communication as information regarding clinical and organisational risks may be silenced within official organisational systems. Furthermore underlying problems may remain unresolved for users and providers who feel unable to express dissent.

Abstract:
<p> The current study examined the construct of intergenerational transmission of trauma (ITT) in relation to its effect on depressed, anxious, and stress symptoms in a sample of participants who could identify a parent as having survived notable trauma. Parental communication style was examined as the moderating factor. A total of 89 participants comprised the current sample, with a majority of the sample representing individuals who identified as highly educated, female, and born in the United States of America. Five assessment tools were utilized, including the Modified Secondary Trauma Questionnaire (MSTQ; Motta, Hafeez, Sciancalepore, &amp; Diaz, 2001), The Depression and Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS; Lovibond, &amp; Lovibond, 1995), The Family Communication Scale (FCS) from The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES-IV; Olson, 2011) and a demographic questionnaire. The most frequent traumas in the sample included loss of parent or other significant family member, physical/sexual/verbal abuse and immigration related trauma. Multiple regression statistics were used to analyze the data, and it was found that MSTQ scores contributed significantly toward the variance in levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Parent communication style did not moderate these associations. Clinical implications, study limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.</p>

Frey, Laura M. "MENTAL HEALTH AMONG SUICIDE ATTEMPT SURVIVORS: THE ROLES OF STIGMA, SELF-DISCLOSURE, AND FAMILY REACTIONS." UKnowledge, 2015. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/hes_etds/29.

Full text
Abstract:
Although research has shown that mental-health stigma can impact an individual’s well-being, little is known about who perpetrates suicide stigma. Moreover, anticipation of stigma could impact whether individuals disclose their suicidal experiences; yet, little is known about suicide disclosure and how family members’ reactions play a role in subsequent mental health. To address these gaps, three studies were designed to examine how stigma, suicide disclosure, and family reaction impact subsequent mental health of attempt survivors and those who have experience suicidal ideation. Individuals who had previously experienced suicidal ideation or a previous suicide attempt (n = 156) were recruited through the American Association of Suicidology. Results indicated that attempt survivors were more likely to experience stigma from non-mental health providers and social network members than from mental health providers. A hierarchical standard regression model including both source and type of stigma accounted for more variance (ΔR2 = .08) in depression symptomology than a model with only type of stigma. Results from respondents who had experienced a nonfatal suicide attempt in the past 10 years (n = 74) indicated that family reaction mediated the relationship between suicide disclosure and depression symptoms (B = -4.83, 95% BCa CI [-11.67, -1.33]). Higher rates of disclosure statistically predicted more positive family reactions (B = 4.81, p = .013) and more positive family reactions statistically predicted less severe depression symptoms (B = -1.00, p = .002). Interpretive phenomenological techniques were used to analyze follow-up interviews (n = 40) with attempt survivors. Individuals’ reactions to suicide disclosure offered insight for attempt survivors’ regarding their place in society. More specifically, reactions impacted the degrees to which attempt survivors felt that they belonged within their social group and whether they were a burden to their loved ones. Given these results, the potential contributions of family scientists to the field of suicidology are examined. Specifically, researchers have primarily examined suicide as an individual phenomenon; family scientists are ideally suited for examining the family’s role after an attempt occurs. However, family science must also make the transition to viewing suicide as a family experience.

Abstract:
Discourse creates the world of policy. Discourse plays a key role within policy formation; political discourse is made visible within particular discursive (spoken and written) practices. Hence, mental health policy is the endpoint of a discursive process and that it is, in itself, an institutional process. The shared understanding necessary to formulate policy is crucial to persons who are responsible for policy decisions and recommendations. Since the public perception is that public policy problems are too complicated for ordinary people to deal with, the policy problem is reframed into manageable "bits." It is how these "bits" are framed, named, and made sense of that concern me most in the policymaking process. The purpose of this dissertation is to make visible the often invisible processes that occur in the creation of that final report. To do so, I use a discursive approach and a selection of discourse tokens, both talk and text, to examine the workings of the Florida Commission on Mental Health and Substance Abuse.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of this investigation was to marry two theories of supportive communication outcomes in order to test a comprehensive model of social support for people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The theoretical frameworks utilized in this investigation were the theory of conversationally-induced reappraisals and the dual-process theory of supportive communication outcomes. These theoretical frameworks provide a foundation for the conversation of how social network members can help their loved ones with OCD manage their distressing symptoms as they explore the types of social support message features (verbal person-centeredness) that are most productive in achieving emotional improvement for those experiencing emotional distress. The union of these two theories in the context of social support and OCD management led to the testing of seven hypotheses. Participants (n = 168) who self-identified as living with OCD at some point in their life were recruited to fill out an online questionnaire. Results indicated support for the theory of conversationally-induced reappraisals, but not for the dual-process theory of supportive communication outcomes. Overall, the findings of this investigation highlighted the utility of emotional support messages high in verbal person-centeredness as they led those with OCD to reassess the intrusive nature of their symptoms, a process which promoted overall affective improvement. These associations suggest that social network members can help their loved ones with OCD manage their symptoms through supportive communication.

Abstract:
This study was an investigation of the patterns of relational communication in conjoint behavioral consultation (CBC) for children with behavioral problems. This study compared the patterns of relational communication when different processes (i.e., decision-making versus information gathering) are used to meet the objectives of CBC during the Conjoint Problem Identification Interview (CPII) and the Conjoint Problem Analysis Interview (CPAI). It also explored the relationship between patterns of relational communication and the outcome of CBC. Twenty-one children with identified behavioral problems (ages 3 to 8), the mothers and teachers of these children (i.e., the consultees), and advanced graduate students (i.e., the consultants) participated in this study. Relational communication was measured via the Family Relational Communication Control Coding System (FRCCCS, Heatherington & Friedlander, 1987). The two summary variables that were derived from the FRCCCS are domineeringness and dominance (Courtright, Millar, & Rogers-Millar, 1979; Rogers-Millar & Millar, 1979).The measure of outcome was the improvements in children's target behavior from baseline to intervention at home and at school, as measured by effect size statistics. The extent to which consultants, parents and teachers intent to direct the other and how the others receive their directiveness, appear to vary as a function of the interview as well as the process use to meet objectives within an interview. Some patterns of relational communication were found to be associated with the outcome of consultation. The original contributions as well as the implications of this research are discussed.

Abstract:
The obesity epidemic among children and adolescents has been growing rapidly over the past 10 years, particularly in Latino children. Multiple researchers have found support for positive associations between parent-child communication and healthy nutrition and exercise behaviors. The present study examined the relations between parent-adolescent communication and parenting style and the dietary and exercise behaviors of Latino adolescents. The study included 79 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 years and their parents (100% are Latino). Correlation and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to determine which parenting style and communication variables are significantly associated with adolescents’ dietary and physical activity behaviors. Based on the Pearson correlation and hierarchical regression analyses, parent reported ‘problems in communication’ was the only variable significantly associated with adolescents’ fast food intake. Overall, the results of this study demonstrate the value of considering family functioning in childhood obesity research and including the family in childhood obesity interventions.

Abstract:
The first part of this dissertation systematically and comprehensively reviews the literature to understand what is and is not known about Chinese internal migration and mental health. By identifying the research gaps, the second part of this dissertation extends previous research by offering an integrative perspective that articulates how multimodal connectedness by diverse media forms influence one's personal networks, and thus their social capital, social support, and life satisfaction and positive mental health as two subjective well-being outcomes. The theory of media multiplexity (Haythornthwaite, 2005) was employed to explain the relations between Chinese internal migrant workers' diverse media use and their personal ties linked. Media multiplexity advocates that strong ties tend to use diverse media forms to sustain the deep levels of mutual dependency, while only one or two media were employed in the communication of weak ties. However, there is still a dearth of studies investigating Chinese migrant workers' diverse media use to establish and maintain their social ties. In this dissertation, the theory of media multiplexity was advanced with the consideration of the diverse media values in particular Chinese social context within the Chinese migrant worker population. The traditional perspective of media multiplexity theory emphasizes the positive relationship of the media use number and tie strength. In this dissertation I argue that both the number and value of different media forms should be considered to understand the nexus the migrant workers' multiplex media use to interact with different social ties. Moreover, this study also first time investigated the personal networks of Chinese migrant workers and how their personal networks function influences their mental health.

Abstract:
There is a growing body of evidence indicating that anxiety, stress and mental ill-health are becoming more prevalent in modern Western societies. At the same time, climate change and mass extinction have now taken root in a period of the earth’s history that has been labelled, ‘the Anthropocene’ and/or ‘Capitalocene’. Some academics have related these various issues to a ‘crisis of perception’ and a general nature-culture perceptual misalignment. This thesis/play is a deconstruction and (re)construction of human-environment conceptions in relation to mental health and wellbeing. More precisely, it is an attempt to map ‘the spread mind’ in ‘environ(mental) health’ (Mcphie, 2014a). (Intra-)Act 1 is an exploration of the performativity of particular Euclidean concepts as well as post-Enlightenment environmental and psychotherapeutic paradigms, with a particular emphasis on those that purport an innate connection with nature. The act also (re)views models that measure mental health as an objectified or subjectified essence within an anthropocentrically idealised self. By taking this approach, I highlight the distinct move in Western culture from an ontology of immanence to one of transcendence. (Intra-)Act 2 invites you to think with a post-qualitative collaborative action (re)search, using psychogeography and rhizoanalysis to map the temporal assemblages of six people-environments (a multiplicity), each with a specific diagnosed mental health concern, in order to explore how mental health and wellbeing is a distributed process. (Intra-)Act 3 and the assemblages present the rhizoanalyses in the form of (re)presentational experimentation including, Brechtian playwriting and assemblages of mental health. By thinking with a troika of emerging contemporary process-relational ontologies, I propose an alternative post-psychotherapeutic pathway for how we might conceive of mental health and wellbeing. This attempt emphasises the intra-relational co-production of material agency and is (re)presented in this study as a process distributed of the environment. This is not a conclusion.

Abstract:
Escape from emotional pain has been identified through suicide-note research as the main driver for completed suicide. Research using fMRI scanning has detected shared neural networks between physical and emotional pain, suggesting that emotional pain is a discrete somatic experience very similar physiologically to physical pain. Little is known about the process by which suicidal patients communicate their emotional pain to mental health professionals. In this study data were collected from 26 mental health professionals and 9 patients at risk of suicide and subjected to inductive thematic analysis. The results were formulated into an emotional pain communication model, identifying 4 types of emotional communication Unspoken/Unheard, Spoken/Unheard, Spoken/Heard and Unspoken/Heard. 14 subthemes identify the inhibitors and facilitators of emotional pain communication within these 4 types.

Abstract:
This study examined a mediational model of mental illness stigma, parent-child communication about mental health concerns, and help seeking attitudes/behaviors among young adults with at least one immigrant parent while considering the possible moderating effect of acculturation gap. The primary goal of this study was to examine whether the acculturation gap changed the relation between mental illness stigma and communication about personal mental health concerns with immigrant parents, which in turn could become a significant predictor of their help-seeking attitudes, as well as a barrier to seeking professional mental health services. Findings provided support to the direct and indirect effects of mental illness stigma through communication about mental health concerns on attitudes about help-seeking. The acculturation gap hypothesized to be a possible moderator for the stigma-communication about mental health concerns relationship among young adult ABCI was found to be significant for ABCI with a low mainstream culture acculturation gap. Discussion on the findings, limitations of the study, future research directions, and counseling implications are addressed.

Abstract:
This dissertation documents the joys and terrors of caring for my father throughout my twenties and early thirties. The story is autoethnographic and demonstrates the value of narrative research in fostering understandings of self, other, and the world around us. I call this reflexive practice of writing narrative education because as I engaged in it, I learned what it means to care, and how mental health and illness factor into the ways in which care is expressed and provided in my own relationships and beyond. In addition, throughout the story I was a member of the academic community, which makes caring more than an act or behavior, but a concept to unpack, an ideograph. This dissertation begins with the goal to write my story and learn from it so others might learn from it as well. While the narrative portion of my dissertation focuses on story and the craft of creative nonfiction, the final chapters present a discussion of narrative ethics and the writing process. I also delve into concepts of care, family, and community to shed light on the narrative and create a space for reflection.

Public Health<br>Ph.D.<br>This cross-sectional investigation examined characteristics of ecstasy use during college and associations between ecstasy use during college and demographic factors, family functioning, mental health, and stage of change for ecstasy use. In addition a multivariate model was developed to predict characteristics of ecstasy use during college. An electronic survey was sent to all undergraduate students enrolled at a large urban university in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States during the spring of 2007. Demographic factors and characteristics of ecstasy use were examined using standardized measures employed in national drug use surveys and by the World Health Organization. Measures associated specifically with ecstasy use during college were developed for this investigation. Family functioning was measured with the Parent Adolescent Communication Scale. Mental health was measured with the K6 screening instrument for nonspecific psychological distress. Stage of change was measured with a five-stage algorithm. The final sample for analysis consisted of 194 participants who reported ecstasy use during college and 2849 participants who reported no ecstasy use during college. Data were described using conventional descriptive statistics, chi-square statistics and non-parametric statistics. A logistic regression model was used to identify variables associated with ecstasy use during college. Based on the results, the following generalized conclusions were drawn: ecstasy continues to be used by college students at large urban universities in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States; because the majority of college students reported using ecstasy for the first time during college and also reported using ecstasy for up to two years, it appears that the college environment is a contextual factor for ecstasy use; lower family communication is associated with ecstasy use during college; psychological distress is associated with ecstasy use during college; being white (versus non-white), male (versus female) and having low or moderate (versus high) family communication each is independently associated with ecstasy use during college; differences in stage of change for ecstasy use among ecstasy users and the demographic profile of ecstasy users compared to non-ecstasy users suggest that prevention, education and intervention efforts should be designed to match the unique factors associated with ecstasy use during college.<br>Temple University--Theses

Abstract:
Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are an important part of society today. Older adults often report ICTs as difficult to use and unhelpful; however, ICTs can support older adults’ ability to stay in touch with family and friends across long distances and help increase their quality of life. Unfortunately, training programs targeted at teaching older adults to use ICTs are often costly and time-consuming. The current study attempts to determine whether advertisements depicting older adults using ICTs can be used to increase self-efficacy without the use of training programs. A within subjects experimental design was completed using an independent variable in which participants viewed two advertisements. Participants were randomly assigned to view an advertisement PowerPoint depicting younger adults using technology first, or randomly assigned to an advertisement PowerPoint depicting older adults using technology first. The dependent variable was a Technology Self-Efficacy Survey developed for the purposes of this study. Results of a paired samples t-test indicated that participants did not rate their selfefficacy higher after viewing the PowerPoint with older adults depicted using technology, as compared to viewing the PowerPoint with younger adults depicted using technology. Although the results were not statistically significant, this research indicated that older adults generally rated their self-efficacy higher after viewing the PowerPoint with older adults versus the PowerPoint with younger adults. Future research could help determine whether advertisements could be used to increase technology self-efficacy in older adults.

Abstract:
The number of people dealing with mental health issues like depression is increasing in Sweden. One common tool used by healthcare practitioners when treating depression is the use of self-assessment questionnaires, which estimates how severe the depression is. The current modus operandi is to let patients answer questionnaires with pen-and-paper, a practice with major inefficiencies. Our aim was to develop an ICT (information and communication technology) system that enables efficient and effective communication between patients and practitioners. Efficient in the way that manually transferring questionnaire results from pen-and-paper into the medical record is not necessary and effective in the way that the system enables data visualisation that makes it easier for the healthcare practitioner to make decisions. The result was an ICT system, ready for use by a healthcare provider, that was developed with the current regulations in mind. The system developed was deemed to make the utilisation of self-assessment questionnaires more efficient and effective. However, some features in the system can be further improved or added, to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of patient-practitioner communication.<br>Antalet människor med mentala sjukdomar så som depression ökar i Sverige.

Abstract:
The project for the degree of master consisted of a communication plan for the Portuguese Society of Brief Psychotherapy (S.P.P.B.), in order to promote counseling and community intervention sessions (CAIC). The project aimed at determining which communication activities were most appropriate in the promotion of mental health for S.P.P.B. case. Consequently, we sought to identify the sociopolitical, economic, technological and legal conditions in which S.P.P.B. was immersed; identify its resources, opportunities and threats; make a market report and determine the communication strategy and the communication campaign that best suits S.P.P.B. and one of its areas of action, namely, counseling and community intervention sessions (CAIC). To achieve the planned goals, we used a case study of S.P.P.B., employing a mixed method, i.e., using a qualitative method by making an interview and a quantitative method by analyzing secondary data. The communication plan per se purpose is to gain customers for CAIC, increase the revenue and diffuse SPPB, its model and its activities in the long-term.

Abstract:
The purpose of this investigation is to gather insights from construction workers regarding their perceptions of the impact personal stress may have on their own behavior, and, in turn, how their behavior can affect the safety and work quality of the entire construction crew. It has been found in this investigation that although personal stress is not always verbally shared with coworkers, it is recognized by colleagues via nonverbal cues. In addition, most construction workers report that they do not receive appropriate social support from their co-workers, despite their need for it.<br>Department of Communication Studies

Abstract:
School settings are increasingly being targeted as ideal entry points for youth mental health initiatives and naturally, educators have been identified as playing a critical role in supporting youth in distress. The current study set out to investigate how to strengthen the ability of educators to support youth experiencing bullying and mental health difficulties. The study was conducted in two phases: an initial phase in which a mental health literacy and communication skills workshop for educators was developed and refined, and a second phase in which the workshop was pilot-tested. The 2-hour workshop was delivered to two groups of students (N = 35) in a Teacher’s Education (B.Ed.) program at a Canadian university. Participants completed a questionnaire following the workshop to assess their satisfaction with the workshop experience and their degree of change in knowledge and awareness of bullying and mental health difficulties, as well as self-efficacy and perceived confidence in communicating with young people in distress. Results showed that participant satisfaction with the workshop was high and that most participants would recommend the workshop for pre-service and in-service teachers. In addition, participant knowledge, awareness, self-efficacy, and self-confidence in communicating with youth in distress increased from pre- to post-workshop. Taken together, the results of the pilot study provide support for further development and delivery of this workshop to pre-service and in-service teachers to help prepare educators for the complex, demanding, and vital role of supporting young people in distress due to bullying and mental health difficulties.

Abstract:
The epidemiological database regarding changes in the communicative behavior available in mental health systems is really low. However, by means of clinical experiments and studies conducted in psychiatric institutions, it was noted that individuals with a diagnosis of mental disorder, mainly schizophrenia, had disturbances regarding their communicative skills, in which the language was the most affected subject. Those individuals had their social life and relationships damaged, this is closely related to the communicative process. Therefore, knowing and evaluating their communicative behavior allows the development of better suited treatment methods, mostly towards the ones who rely on the mental health system seeking psychosocial rehabilitation. The kind of study is exploratory-descriptive and it\'s conducted in a Mental Health Service (MHS) located in a city in the countryside of São Paulo, Brazil, and its main objective was to describe the communicative behavior of individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. The sample was made up of 50 individuals with the aforementioned diagnosis, patients of the MHS, aged 19-75 and with at least 2 years of school. First off, a research was conducted on their medical records in the MHS in search of their personal background and the subtype of their schizophrenia. Afterwards, the Montreal Communication Evaluation Battery - MCE Battery- was used for evaluation. It is made up of 14 tasks that evaluate the speech, the inferential pragmatic, the lexical-semantic and the prosodic aspects of the language. The research was made by means of simple descriptive statistics using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 16.0 program and it also included the databases acquired from the medical records regarding the patients personal background. This way the research made it possible to establish a relation between the MCE battery and the personal background of each patient. The results show that most of the subjects are males, with poor education, practitioner of catholicism and affected by the paranoid subtype of schizophrenia. All the tasks evaluated showed a significant percentage of disturbances, however, most disturbances took place upon the tasks of lexical evocation with semantic criteria, acts of indirect speech, conversational speech and narrative speech, while only a few disturbances were related to the prosodic components in the comprehensive level, it should be highlighted that the productive level in the prosodic emotional and linguistic aspects suffered significant disturbances, allowing us to conclude that the communicative behavior in individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia is abnormal in all aspects of the language. The most damaged aspects were the speech and the pragmatics, which should not be entirely related to the linguistic aspects, but also to the disturbance related to their thoughts and cognition, and also the affective dullness and the social matters related to this disease. Throughout this study it was possible to understand that there are no special aspects to describe the communicative behavior of individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, as it is important to take into account the social, the cultural and the economic context of those individuals. Coming up with communicative possibilities to involve those individuals in society certainly contributes in a significative way in aiding them and in the creation of intervention programs. This task belongs to Speech Therapists.
