This thesis explores issues relating to intervention in, and measurement of, child mental health and well-being. The first chapter was a systematic review of Positive psychology interventions used to improve mental health and well-being outcomes. This identified 12 randomised controlled trials (n= 1668) in children and adolescents identifying a growing but generally weak evidence base. The array of outcomes and confounding variables assessed were identified alongside implementation issues. Help-seeking has been studied for over 20 years, but much is yet to be known about what variables influence parental help-seeking. In the present studies, participants were recruited from Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Study 1, included 260 caregivers recruited from local school districts and a church. Using confirmatory factor analysis, results supported the hypothesized 3-factor structure of the Parental Attitudes Toward Psychological Services Inventory (PATPSI) and internal consistency ranged from moderate to high. Study 2 conducted subsequent analyses on the data from Study 1. Correlat

This dissertation is centred on the application of structural equation modeling (SEM) techniques to examine the measurement of mental well-being (MWB) and its relationship with health status using longitudinal data from the Canadian National Population Health Survey (NPHS). The first manuscript contains the results of a study (n = 1782) examining the factor structure of a 6-item version of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) included in the NPHS. Nested confirmatory factor analyses indicate that the items are best modeled as two correlated dimensions interpreted as a measure of self-compete

A research report submitted to the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of the Witwatersrand in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Medicine in the branch of Community Health (Public Health Medicine). May 2014
Background Occupational stress represents a substantial public health challenge. Although there has been an extensive focus on this form of stress within the international setting, there appears to be a paucity of relevant evidence within South Africa. Specifically, within the local context, there are relatively few: (1) reliability testi

A presente Tese de Doutoramento, intitulada “Desenvolvimento e Validação do Questionário das Capacidades Alcançadas para a Saúde Mental Comunitária (QCA-SMC)” consiste numa investigação que procura contribuir para a avaliação e inovação dos programas comunitários de saúde mental, através de uma nova medida baseada no referencial teórico das capacidades e construída de forma colaborativa. Assim, foram definidos dois objetivos principais, nomeadamente: desenvolver uma medida inspirada na abordagem das capacidades, através de um processo colaborativo entre académicos e utilizadores de serviços;

Doctoral Thesis (Doctoral Degree in Informatics)

Abstract:
The determinants of health care use among rural, low-income mothers and their children were assessed using a multi-state, longitudinal data set, Rural Families Speak. The results indicate that rural mothers’ decisions regarding health care utilization for themselves and for their child can be best modeled using a simultaneous systems approach to negative binomial regression. Mothers’ visits to a health care provider increased with higher self-assessed depression scores, increased number of child’s doctor visits, greater numbers of total children in the household, greater numbers of chronic con
