Little is known regarding current relational dynamics among young people, their mental health, and socio-economic processes and implications for mental health promotion initiatives. Currently, much of the available research examining transition from CAMHS to AMHS is based on service providers’ perspectives with limited focus on perspectives of young people. Therefore, the aim of this research was to explore how young people experience transition between CAMHS and AMHS. In addition, the experience of being supported by a Transition Service (TS) was also explored. Seven participants were re

Abstract:
The lifetime burden of mental ill-health, has been recognised as a major public health issue. Inconsistencies in assessment and diverse methodologies have led to a lack of comparability. This PhD thesis attempts to assess secondary administrative datasets in measuring mental health at a population level in Northern Ireland. At first, this thesis focuses on the linkage between the Child Health System (CHS) dataset and nation-wide prescription data, using the Health and Care Number. Through this, the interplay between perinatal factors and later psychotropic medication uptake is investigated. Th

Abstract:
The importance of early intervention for positive outcomes following a first episode of psychosis (FEP) is recognised, however, there are still delays in young people seeking help. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore beliefs about help-seeking in young people who have recently experienced a FEP. Twelve participants were interviewed and transcripts were analysed using grounded theory. Five categories of beliefs were identified which contributed to the development of a preliminary model of beliefs about a need for help-seeking. Young people’s beliefs about their experiences as norma

My interest was to access participants’ stories of partner violence and to tap into their usual ways of thinking and talking about this issue. I wanted to attend to how young women and men actively imparted meaning to themselves and others, and how they constructed and performed their identities through the situated interaction of the research interview. Abstract:
Depression in young people is common, resulting in morbidity and mortality. Behavioural Activation (BA) is a cost-effective and efficacious treatment for reducing depressive symptoms in adults. There is little published research relating to BA as a treatment option for young people with depression. Thus, the aim was to explore the feasibility of conducting a trial of BA for depression in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). Stage I The initial stage of the study comprised a focused ethnography, conducted over a six-month period. The purpose was to explore the CAMHS study site,

This thesis studies the transition process for young people with social emotional and mental health (SEMH) difficulties, from mainstream secondary school into further education colleges, with particular reference to what is happening at a systemic level. Activity theory was used as a theoretical framework and methodology to examine the sociocultural processes involved in transition, highlight contradictions and offer recommendations for future practice. Individual semi-structured interviews were utilised in the research to explore the views of secondary school staff, further education staff an

Abstract:
This thesis presents the findings from an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) of the experience of young people whose parents are in contact with mental health services. An overview of previous literature suggested that these young people have largely been overlooked by researchers until the last decade. More recently, projects have been underway that aim to address the specific needs of this group, particularly by encouraging professionals to consider clients' roles as parents. These have been mostly from a psychiatric perspective and have tended to rely on illness models of unders
