Abstract:
Contemporary college students not only face the pressure brought by their studies but also bear the pressure brought by society and their families. Helping college students correctly understand their mental health and effectively solve their’ mental health diseases has become an important issue in education research. The cultivation of healthy psychological quality is inseparable from the cultivation of a humanistic spirit. Therefore, integrating excellent traditional culture into Chinese language and literature teaching and research and giving full play to and inheriting the educational role of excellent traditional culture can not only improve the literary quality of college students and benefit the construction of healthy mental of college students. The main purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of Chinese excellent traditional culture on the cultivation of college students’ mental health, analyze the impact of traditional culture integration into Chinese language and literature teaching research on improving college students’ mental health, and propose the valuable suggestion for integration of excellent traditional culture into Chinese language and literature teaching research. Firstly, we analyze the benefits of integrating traditional culture in literature to the construction of college students’ healthy psychology; then, the current deficiencies of literature education are analyzed; next, through literature analysis and summary, the main factors affecting the mental health of college students were found and the importance of these factors was evaluated by questionnaire survey and mathematical statistics methods; finally, targeted opinions and suggestions are put forward. This research provides guidance and reference for inheriting excellent national culture through literature education and constructing university health psychology in the future.

Abstract:
We present the case of a patient with a first single episode of a dual drug-induced aseptic mening (DIAM) due to amoxicillin and ibuprofen and a short review of updated literature. A 76-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with slowness and confusion following a dental and gingival inflammation treated with oral amoxicillin 500 mg bid and ibuprofen 600 mg tid for 1 week. His mental state and higher functions abruptly worsened after therapy increase leading to hospitalization. Both the drugs were stopped and the patient improved rapidly within 2–3 days and was released asymptomatic after a week. On the basis of this temporal relationship with a comprehensive negative neuroimaging and laboratory testing for viral, bacterial, and mycobacterial micro-organisms, a DIAM by amoxicillin and ibuprofen was diagnosed. We support the hypothesis that this dual therapy was causative because of the progressive onset of central nervous system symptoms starting at a low amoxicillin dose with a high ibuprofen intake and that this sort of chemical meningoencephalitis was mostly due to the pharmacokinetic of amoxicillin after its dose increase. To our knowledge, this is the first documented publication of a severe first episode of DIAM with predominant higher function involvement caused by these two drugs commonly used together, amoxicillin and ibuprofen.

Abstract:
Introduction Successful stabilization of patients with mental disorders requires most of the times the use of more than one antipsychotic medications with increase prevalence of clozapine in refractory cases. Constipation consists one of the most debilitating side effect of the therapy, which gradually progresses to a chronic state of bowel movement dysfunction, with recurrent episode of paralytic ileus of various severity. Objectives We describe the case of a middle age male treated with clozapine for refractory mental disorder, who developed ileus and subsequent bowel dysfunction not amenable to laxatives. Methods The acute episode have been treated conservatively with nasogastric decompression, intravenous replacement of fluids and electrolytes, antibiotics chemoprophylaxis and low molecular weight heparin. His overall physical status was unremarkable for obesity, diabetes, hypertension, allergies, previous operations and a former endoscopic evaluation conducted in the recent past, which had ruled out malignant neoplastic disease. Results A course of per os prucalopride have been instituted, which showed preliminary promising results in restoring proper bowel movements, without any serious side effect and without the need to discontinue his course with antipsychotics. Prucalopride is a 5 HT4 agonist which selectively binds to the receptors of the intestine, resulting in muscular contractions as well as clorium secretion from the mucosa promoting an osmotic defecation. The substance has been extensively use in the treatment of irritable bowel disease of the chronic constipation type. Conclusions We suggest the more systematic use of this agent in this group of patients after proper endoscopic evaluation and restoration of all secondary causes of constipation. Abstract:
Antidepressants re generally considered to be the standard treatment for depression, despite a large body of research evidence documenting the equal or superior efficacy of counseling. This article provides a critical review of the literature comparing the efficacy of antidepressants and counseling for adults with depression. Highlighted are several issues that must be considered when reviewing the literature, including methodological problems, the placebo effect, trauma and depression, comparative safety profiles, and the marketing of antidepressants. Implications for mental health counseling practice and research, including the suggestion that counseling alone should be the first treatment of choice for most persons with depression, are discussed.

Abstract:
Background The Internet has the potential to help young people by reducing the stigma associated with mental health and enabling young people to access services and professionals which they may not otherwise access. Online support can empower young people, help them develop new online friendships, share personal experiences, communicate with others who understand, provide information and emotional support, and most importantly help them feel less alone and normalize their experiences in the world. Objective The aim of the research was to gain an understanding of how young people use an online forum for emotional and mental health issues. Specifically, the project examined what young people discuss and how they seek support on the forum (objective 1). Furthermore, it looked at how the young service users responded to posts to gain an understanding of how young people provided each other with peer-to-peer support (objective 2). Methods Kooth is an online counseling service for young people aged 11-25 years and experiencing emotional and mental health problems. It is based in the United Kingdom and provides support that is anonymous, confidential, and free at the point of delivery. Kooth provided the researchers with all the online forum posts between a 2-year period, which resulted in a dataset of 622 initial posts and 3657 initial posts with responses. Thematic analysis was employed to elicit key themes from the dataset. Results The findings support the literature that online forums provide young people with both informational and emotional support around a wide array of topics. The findings from this large dataset also reveal that this informational or emotional support can be viewed as directive or nondirective. The nondirective approach refers to when young people provide others with support by sharing their own experiences. These posts do not include explicit advice to act in a particular way, but the sharing process is hoped to be of use to the poster. The directive approach, in contrast, involves individuals making an explicit suggestion of what they believe the poster should do. Conclusions This study adds to the research exploring what young people discuss within online forums and provides insights into how these communications take place. Furthermore, it highlights the challenge that organizations may encounter in mediating support that is multidimensional in nature (informational-emotional, directive-nondirective).

Abstract:
This article examines the current legal framework and practice of the conditional discharge of mental health patients in Hong Kong under Section 42B of the Mental Health Ordinance from a human rights perspective. Using existing literature and findings from semi-structured qualitative interviews conducted with medical professionals, the author argues that the current regime lacks adequate safeguards for mental health patients, both in law and in actual practice, and suffers from the absence of a clear guiding purpose. As such, the law and practice of conditional discharge would most likely infringe patients’ fundamental rights to private and family life and to liberty and personal security. The article concludes with the suggestion that an evidence-based approach is required to determine the purpose of the regime and how it may be best designed for that end.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to systematically review the current literature on compassion in mental health from a historical, service user and carer (SUAC)/academic researcher perspective with respect to the current paradigm/biomedical model. Design/methodology/approach Searches were conducted in CIANHL Complete, Academic Search Complete, British Education Index, ERIC, MEDLINE, PsycArticles, Scorpus, Proquest Central using a simplified PRISM approach. Findings In the UK, the SUAC-movement facilitated the adoption of more compassionate mental health in statutory services. Across the world, compassion-based approaches may be viewed as beneficial, especially to those experiencing a biomedical model “treatment”. Health-care workers, suffering burnout and fatigue during neoliberal economics, benefit from compassion training, both in their practice and personally. Randomised control trials (RCTs) demonstrate compassion-type interventions are effective, given sufficient intervention timing, duration and design methodology. Psychology creates outcome measures of adequacies and deficiencies in compassion, demonstrating their importance statistically, with reservations. The effective protection of mental health by self-compassion in both SUACs and health care professionals is evident. It is clear from qualitative research that SUACs prefer compassionate mental health. It also makes a large difference to mental health in general populations. Implications for practice and suggestions for future research are given, including a necessity to fund RCTs comparing compassionate mental health interventions with the biomedical model. Unless statutory mental health services adopt this emerging evidence base, medics and their SUACs will continue to rely on pharmaceuticals. Originality/value This is the first integrated literature review of compassion in mental health from a historical, SUAC/academic researcher viewpoint using all research methodologies.

Abstract:
The psychopathology and disabilities of a group of institutionalised elderly schizophrenics were compared with those of a group of non-schizophrenic elderly, and with younger schizophrenics reported in a parallel study and in the literature. Elderly schizophrenics showed significantly more psychopathology and disability than the non-schizophrenic elderly; however, they exhibited less psychopathology than younger schizophrenics. Disability among elderly schizophrenics was not correlated with chronicity of institutionalisation or psychopathology. There was a suggestion that disability among elderly schizophrenics may be due to organic deterioration.

Abstract:
In view of disease-related threats, containment measures, and disrupted healthcare, individuals with pre-existing mental illness might be vulnerable to adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous reviews indicated increased mental distress, with limited information on peri-pandemic changes. In this systematic review, we aimed to identify longitudinal research investigating pre- to peri-pandemic and/or peri-pandemic changes of mental health in patients, focusing on the early phase and considering specific diagnoses. PsycINFO, Web of Science, the WHO Global literature on coronavirus disease database, and the Cochrane COVID-19 Study Register weresearched through 31 May 2021. Studies were synthesized using vote counting based on effect direction. We included 40 studies mostly from Western, high-income countries. Findings were heterogeneous, with improving and deteriorating mental health observed compared to pre-pandemic data, partly depending on underlying diagnoses. For peri-pandemic changes, evidence was limited, with some suggestion of recovery of mental distress. Study quality was heterogeneous; only few studies investigated potential moderators (e.g., chronicity of mental illness). Mental health effects on people with pre-existing conditions are heterogeneous within and across diagnoses for pre- to peri-pandemic and peri-pandemic comparisons. To improve mental health services amid future global crises, forthcoming research should understand medium- and long-term effects, controlling for containment measures.

Abstract:
Introduction. Shared psychotic disorder, or folie ? deux, is a rare entity characterized by the transmission of psychotic symptoms from one patient (the inducer) to another (the induced). Delusional disorder is a type of mental illness (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification, diagnosis code F24; it was moved from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, to Other Specified Schizophrenia Spectrum and Other Psychotic Disorders). Only one person (the inducer) suffers from a real psychotic disorder, and the other/s is/ are induced, and most often recover/s after separation from the inducer. Case Report. Based on the medical records and available literature on this condition, we present a case of a mother and son with this disorder, where the son with a paranoid psychosis transfers it to his mother. They lived alone in the same household for years, socially isolated from the others. Conclusion. In general, the research has shown that there are no uniform opinions among authors regarding the incidence of the disorder in males and females, at younger and older age, as well as in relationships between partners, siblings, and between parents and children. Most agree that longterm social isolation is among the most common risk factors, as well as dominance and strong power of suggestion in one partner, and passivity and tendency to suggestion in the other.

Abstract:
In this paper we examine the extent of the focus on number sense, enabled and accompanied by the development of efficient strategies for mental maths, in the foundation and intermediate phase. We do this through documentary analysis of the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) for these phases and the Annual National Assessments (ANAs). We argue that number sense and mental agility are critical for the development and understanding of algorithms and algebraic thinking introduced in the intermediate phase. However, we note from our work with learners, and broader evidence in the South African landscape, that counting-based strategies in the foundation phase are replaced in the intermediate phase with traditional algorithms. We share experiences in the form of vignettes to illuminate this problem. Whilst literature and the CAPS curriculum emphasise the important role of mental computation within number sense, we note that the ANAs do not include a “mental mathematics” component. This absence in assessment, where assessment often drives teaching, is problematic. We conclude with the suggestion that research be conducted into the viability/appropriateness of an orally administered mental mathematics assessment component in the ANAs as a way to establish a focus on number sense across the foundation and intermediate phases.

Abstract:
AimsTo review the existent literature base regarding Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups care pathway into and experience of care and treatment within secure services. This includes any differences (between BAME and majority ethnic groups) in rates of sentencing, sectioning, length of stay, received treatment and use of restrictive practice. Our overarching aim is to highlight the severe lack of research in this area and the corresponding need for increased research to both consolidate and progress the existing evidence base in order to inform and improve culturally competent service provision.BackgroundResearch suggests that BAME groups have an increased risk of involuntary psychiatric care, longer-stays within services and higher rates of re-admission. Several explanations have been proposed for this observed disparity, however few of these proposed explanations have provided sufficient or consistent supporting evidence.MethodA review of both quantitative and qualitative research regarding BAME groups within secure services was conducted. Approximately twenty journal articles, literature reviews and meta-analysis published between 1988 and 2019 were included. The current study should be considered a snapshot and not reflective of the full extent of published literature on the subject. For inclusion, studies should have been conducted in either a forensic mental health setting or a prison and differentiate a minimum of two ethnic groupsConclusionResearch suggest that BAME individuals continue to experience an increased risk of involuntary psychiatric care, longer stays within secure services and higher rates of re-admission. Whilst many explanations for this disparity have been proposed, few have provided adequate supporting evidence. The ongoing lack of research within this field has led to a limited evidence base from which to inform culturally competent practice. The research which has been conducted has tended to produce inconsistent findings, in part due to the reliance on small scale studies with limited generalisability. Research within this area has been further complicated by varying definitions of culture and ethnicity across studies, leading to some suggestion that the issue of ethnic inequalities and pathways to care, has been misconceptualised. This highlights a critical need for increased research efforts to:Understand why BAME individuals are at increased risk of involuntary psychiatric care, and how this disproportionate risk can be addressedExplore potential disparities in the care and treatment of BAME individuals within services and how this might impact upon higher rates of re-admissionAscertain how best to improve culturally competent service provision.

Covid-19 has caused many people to lose family members, jobs, businesses so that many are experiencing mental health problems. Majelis taklim for housewives is a suggestion to study knowledge, increase faith, and get guidance in fostering a family which is considered the right place to socialize mental health. This study aims to design mental health preaching for majelis taklim. The research method is descriptive qualitative, data obtained from literature, field observations and interviews. The results of the study show that a good da'wah design must pay attention to planning, organizing, implementing, and controlling. The process of planning mental health da'wah at the majelis taklim is determined by the curriculum used which is produced by combining the material listed in the 2012 majelis taklim syllabus which was the output of the Indonesian Ministry of Religion, the material needed by Muslim congregations, the evaluation results of the previous year's majelis taklim activities as well as input from ustadz/ustadzah. In the organizing process, the majelis taklim must coordinate with the Mosque Prosperity Council so that activities are effective and efficient. In the implementation process, paying attention to teacher and congregation schedules must be prioritized. In the supervision process, input from the Mosque and congregation Supervisory Board can be used as an evaluation for further implementationbstracts are written in Indonesian, a maximum of 200 words, made in one paragraph, and may not include abbreviations, citations, tables, images and trademarks. Client's rights is an issue which resurfaces periodically in professional journals, but which is ever-present in the minds of consumers of mental-health facilities. While some of the most striking pleas for adherence to rights have centred in the past on inpatient mental-health facilities, similar issues related to client treatment continue to exist in community mental-health centres. This paper reviews the literature on outpatient clients' rights from the perspective of both clients and professionals. The paper provides suggestions for mental-health professionals to more adequately address the rights of their clients in terms of the workplace, the organization of their agencies, and through legal/legislated means.

Abstract:
SynopsisThis study examines the Likert-style successive integer scoring of Goldberg's (1972, 1978) General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) with a psychometric model in which the thresholds between successive categories within each item can be estimated. The model is particularly appropriate because the scoring of the successive categories, which are not named in the same way across items, by successive integers has received substantial discussion in the literature. Results from 1967 teachers in Western Australia who completed the 30-item form of the GHQ show that the items conform reasonably well to the model at a general or macro-level of analysis. In particular, the original ordering of categories is supported. However, as expected, there are systematic differences between distances among threshold within items and systematic differences among thresholds between items. The differences between positively and negatively orientated items confirm a suggestion in the literature that these two classes of items form sufficiently different scales so that they could be treated as separate, though reasonably correlated, scales.

Abstract:
This study aimed to derive expert consensus regarding roles and responsibilities of disaster mental health personnel using a Delphi process. The Delphi panel was composed of twenty multidisciplinary experts from the field of psychology, nursing, social welfare, and psychiatry. Based on literature review, focus group interviews, and a public forum, 20 categories and 69 subdivisions of roles and responsibilities of disaster mental health workforce were developed. The Dephi panel assessed relevance of the content and suggested qualified mental health personnel for each role and responsibility. The result indicated that expert consensus was derived for all 20 categories and 69 subdivisions, with the consensus mean of 8 or above on a scale of 1 to 10. On the other hand, there was a slight difference in expert consensus regarding qualifications of personnel to perform each role and responsibility. These results were based on the viewpoints of experts, and thus its clinical applications and practical utility in the disaster mental health field were discussed.

Abstract:
Incarcerated women evidence high rates of both interpersonal trauma and mental illness. In particular, the rates of sexual violence victimization are so high that some researchers have suggested that sexual abuse may be a pathway to prison for women, likely through the development of mental illness, including substance abuse. This review article summarizes the literature on sexual victimization ( n = 32 articles; 28 independent studies) and mental illness ( n = 11 articles; 8 independent studies) prevalence among samples of incarcerated women ( Ns ≥ 100) in context of methodological choices within included articles. Best estimates for sexual victimization from studies using established survey methods were as follows: 50–66% for child sexual abuse, 28–68% for adult sexual abuse, and 56–82% for lifetime sexual assault. Although data directly comparing prevalence of sexual victimization among incarcerated women to prevalence for other groups are limited, the existing data indicate that incarcerated women have significantly greater exposure than incarcerated men and community samples of women. Moreover, compared to findings from the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication, incarcerated women evidence greater prevalence of most lifetime and current mental illnesses, especially depressive disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance use disorders. Surprisingly, only two independent studies have investigated the overlap between sexual victimization and mental illness in samples of incarcerated women. Both studies found disproportionally high rates of mental illness among victims of sexual violence. Suggestions and implications for research, policy, and practice are discussed.

Copy number variations (CNV) are thought to play an important role in causing human diseases, including congenital anomalies, psychiatric disorders, and intellectual disabilities. We report here a one-year-old boy presented to our clinic as developmental delay. He presented a birth weight of 4.5 kg, motor delay, mental retardation, mild hypertonia, and some dysmorphic features (mild frontal bossing, hypertelorism, epicanthus, concave nasal ridge, slightly sparse hair, short hands, and mild nail dysplasia). The brain MRI indicated brain abnormalities; the Gross Motor Function Measure-66 score was 23.37; the Gesell test result showed the development quotient was 50, suggesting mental retardation. Chromosomal microarray analysis showed an approximately 97 kb microdeletion at 4p16.2 (4p16.2 CNV), including part of EVC and EVC2 genes, which were associated with Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (EvC) and Weyers acrofacial dysostosis (WAD). This report suggests 4p16.2 microdeletion may be associated with multiple developmental abnormalities, including motor delay and mental retardation.

Abstract This study explores how mental health is represented and discussed in English-language pop song lyrics. To this end, a specialized corpus of mental health songs, understood as songs that explicitly mention or refer to issues related to mental health and resilience, is analyzed through a combined linguistic/language-educational lens. The aim is to describe these songs linguistically in order to discuss opportunities as well as limitations for the development of mental health literacy in EFL classes. It emerges that relevant lyrics possess the potential to familiarize learners with the relevant discourse of mental health and mental disorders, and several practical language-educational suggestions are offered. On a general note, it is argued that lyrics not only offer starting points for the development of linguistic and literary competencies, but also for a critical examination of a complex, highly relevant, and timely topic.

With “Un coup de dés jamais n'abolira le hasard,” of 1897 (“Dice Thrown Never Will Annul Chance”)—a meditation on how to set up a mental dice game that would visually inscribe the fatal play of human thought shipwrecked against unbeatable chance—Stéphane Mallarmé announced modernism. As his celebrated white sonnet about a swan stuck in the glacier of the blank page (“The new, lively, and lovely today”) had established the image of writing as a near-to-death experience, his equally celebrated understatement about how the ultimate presence of the rose depends on its absence “from any bouquet” had set up symbolism as the art of suggestion. Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of remote working during the Covid-19 pandemic on the mental health and well-being of Gulf employees. Theoretical reference: The study utilizes a systematic literature review to analyze previous studies that have examined the impact of the pandemic on the mental health and well-being of the Gulf population. Method: A systematic literature review was conducted to identify relevant articles that met the inclusion criteria. Six articles were selected for analysis, focusing on the Gulf region, published during the pandemic, and peer-reviewed. Results and Conclusion: The analysis of the selected articles revealed that there is evidence linking lockdown measures to increased depression and anxiety among Gulf remote workers. Additionally, there is evidence suggesting that remote working during lockdown contributes to an emerging epidemic of unhealthy living, which poses a risk factor for developing chronic diseases and exacerbating mental health challenges. Implications of research: The findings of this study highlight the need for authorities and healthcare systems in the Gulf region to develop preventive measures to address the rising epidemic of poor mental health and unhealthy living among remote workers. This is crucial to avoid a future burden of mental health challenges among young employees. Originality/value: This study contributes to the existing literature by specifically focusing on the impact of remote working during the Covid-19 pandemic on the mental health and well-being of Gulf employees. It highlights the need for preventive measures to address the emerging epidemic of poor mental health and unhealthy living in this population.

JMIR Mental Health 5, no. 1 (March 16, 2018): e20. http://dx.doi.org/10.2196/mental.9769.

Abstract:
Background Electronic mental health interventions (eMental health or eMH) can be used to increase accessibility of mental health services for mood disorders, with indications of comparable clinical outcomes as face-to-face psychotherapy. However, the actual use of eMH in routine mental health care lags behind expectations. Identifying the factors that might promote or inhibit implementation of eMH in routine care may help to overcome this gap between effectiveness studies and routine care. Objective This paper reports the results of a systematic review of the scientific literature identifying those determinants of practices relevant to implementing eMH for mood disorders in routine practice. Methods A broad search strategy was developed with high sensitivity to four key terms: implementation, mental health care practice, mood disorder, and eMH. The reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance (RE-AIM) framework was applied to guide the review and structure the results. Thematic analysis was applied to identify the most important determinants that facilitate or hinder implementation of eMH in routine practice. Results A total of 13,147 articles were screened, of which 48 studies were included in the review. Most studies addressed aspects of the reach (n=33) of eMH, followed by intervention adoption (n=19), implementation of eMH (n=6), and maintenance (n=4) of eMH in routine care. More than half of the studies investigated the provision of mental health services through videoconferencing technologies (n=26), followed by Internet-based interventions (n=20). The majority (n=44) of the studies were of a descriptive nature. Across all RE-AIM domains, we identified 37 determinants clustered in six main themes: acceptance, appropriateness, engagement, resources, work processes, and leadership. The determinants of practices are expressed at different levels, including patients, mental health staff, organizations, and health care system level. Depending on the context, these determinants hinder or facilitate successful implementation of eMH. Conclusions Of the 37 determinants, three were reported most frequently: (1) the acceptance of eMH concerning expectations and preferences of patients and professionals about receiving and providing eMH in routine care, (2) the appropriateness of eMH in addressing patients’ mental health disorders, and (3) the availability, reliability, and interoperability with other existing technologies such as the electronic health records are important factors for mental health care professionals to remain engaged in providing eMH to their patients in routine care. On the basis of the taxonomy of determinants of practices developed in this review, implementation-enhancing interventions can be designed and applied to achieve better implementation outcomes. Suggestions for future research and implementation practice are provided.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the extent to which inpatient mental health services attend to the religious needs of service-users. Literature is presented to argue that whilst the importance of religion is highlighted in consumer accounts, research and policy; inpatient services continue to neglect religion and service-users consistently report insufficient attention to religious needs during hospitalisation. Design/methodology/approach – This review adopts a narrative approach to the literature, drawing upon published journal articles, book chapters and policy documentation. Findings – Literature into the topic area is reviewed and discussed within three themes. First, the extent to which religious needs are currently met is explored. Second, potential reasons for neglect of religion are considered. Finally, examples of religiously informed group programmes, individual psychotherapy and the use of traditional healers are detailed. Practical implications – Findings of the review point towards the requirement for inpatient services to more adequately meet religious needs in terms of available facilities. The need for spiritual assessment and collaboration with hospital chaplains is also highlighted, along with the call for increased staff training. Originality/value – It is expected that this review will be of interest to a range of stakeholders including professionals, policy makers and service users. It highlights the void in clinical attention to religious needs and offers practical suggestions for meeting this need.

Abstract:
Background Homelessness is a growing public health challenge in the United Kingdom and internationally, with major consequences for physical and mental health. Women represent a particularly vulnerable subgroup of the homeless population, with some evidence suggesting that they suffer worse mental health outcomes than their male counterparts. Interventions aimed at improving the lives of homeless women have the potential to enhance mental health and reduce the burden of mental illness in this population. This review synthesised the evidence on the effectiveness and acceptability of interventions which aim to improve mental health outcomes in homeless women. Methods Five electronic bibliographic databases: MEDLINE, PsycInfo, CINAHL, ASSIA and EMBASE, were searched. Studies were included if they measured the effectiveness or acceptability of any intervention in improving mental health outcomes in homeless women. Study quality was assessed using the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) Quality Assessment Tool. A narrative summary of the study findings in relation to the research questions was produced. Results Thirty-nine studies met inclusion criteria. Overall, there was moderate evidence of the effectiveness of interventions in improving mental health outcomes in homeless women, both immediately post-intervention and at later follow-up. The strongest evidence was for the effectiveness of psychotherapy interventions. There was also evidence that homeless women find interventions aimed at improving mental health outcomes acceptable and helpful. Conclusions Heterogeneity in intervention and study methodology limits the ability to draw definitive conclusions about the extent to which different categories of intervention improve mental health outcomes in homeless women. Future research should focus on lesser-studied intervention categories, subgroups of homeless women and mental health outcomes. More in-depth qualitative research of factors that enhance or diminish the acceptability of mental health interventions to homeless women is also required.

Introduction: The novel coronavirus disease, which the World Health Organization (WHO) officially designated as COVID-19, originated in Wuhan, China, as a cluster of unexplained pneumonia cases. It has affected countries worldwide and has been classified as a pandemic. To deal with this global health crisis and to curtail the spread of the virus, stringent public health measures have been implemented. There is evidence of a positive correlation between widespread outbreaks of contagious diseases, symptoms of psychiatric illness, and psychological distress. Aim: Considering the need to develop a deeper understanding of COVID-19 to devise strategies to deal with and prevent impact of COVID-19 on mental health thereby present review is undertaken. Method: A narrative review was conducted in May 2020. Result: Findings are suggestive that healthcare workers engaged in providing care to patients affected by COVID-19 are at a risk of developing psychological issues such as vicarious traumatization. With regards to the public, certain populations, including individuals with preexisting mental health issues, are more vulnerable to adverse psychological impacts from COVID-19. To conclude it, the review findings highlight the hidden mental health impact of COVID-19 and allows health care workers in all specialty to watch for vulnerable patients, their family members, and colleagues who may adversely psychologically affected by COVID-19.

Abstract:
Unprecedented numbers of cases of MPD have been diagnosed, mainly in North America, since 1957. Widespread publicity for the concept makes it uncertain whether any case can now arise without being promoted by suggestion or prior preparation. In order to determine if there is any evidence that MPD was ever a spontaneous phenomenon, a series of cases of MPD from the earlier literature has been examined, with particular attention given to alternative diagnoses which could account for the phenomena reported and to the way in which the first alternate personality emerged. The earlier cases involved amnesia, striking fluctuations in mood, and sometimes cerebral organic disorder. The secondary personalities frequently appeared with hypnosis. Several amnesic patients were trained with new identities. Others showed overt iatrogenesis. No report fully excluded the possibility of artificial production. This indicates that the concept has been elaborated from the study of consciousness and its relation to the idea of the self. The diagnosis of MPD represents a misdirection of effort which hinders the resolution of serious psychological problems in the lives of patients.

Abstract:
AimsTo understand the prevalence, patterns and correlates of substance use among transgender adults.BackgroundMinority stress theories suggest that the increasing rates of discrimination experienced by transgender people are precipitants of substance use. This is likely exacerbated by an inadequate provision of trans-inclusive substance misuse services. However, the exclusion of transgender people from the general substance misuse literature makes it difficult to determine the extent to which gender minority status influences substance use. A systematic review was undertaken to better understand the prevalence, patterns and correlates of substance use among this group.MethodIn accordance with the PRISMA guidance, a literature search was conducted to 29th May 2019 on PubMed, PsycINFO, EMBASE and Global Health databases. Primary quantitative studies, published in the English language, that reported the prevalence, patterns or correlates/risk factors of substance use by trans people were included, with no restriction on methodological design.Result651 unique records were identified by the search and 40 studies were included in the synthesis. While there was some suggestion of excess risk of substance use among trans people, there was insufficient evidence to estimate prevalence or quantify the risk of substance use among transgender people, relative to a cisgender population. However, this review identified several gender minority related correlates of substance use which are of relevance to clinicians working with transgender patients, including transphobic discrimination or violence, unemployment and sex work, gender dysphoria, high visual gender non-conformity and intersectional sexual minority status.ConclusionThere are currently significant gaps in the trans substance use literature, relating to the disproportionate investigation of transgender women with multiple intersectional disadvantages, who are not representative of the wider trans community. However, there is sufficient evidence to recommend screening for substance use when individuals report high levels of gender minority stress and to consider the use of integrated trauma-informed psychosocial interventions when managing problematic substance use in the transgender adult.

Abstract:
There have been increased calls to address the growing mental health concerns of postsecondary students in Canada. Health promotion focuses on prevention and is needed as part of a comprehensive approach to student mental health support, with an emphasis on not just the individual but also the sociocultural environment of postsecondary institutions. The aim was to conduct a scoping review of the literature pertaining to the associations between postsecondary institutional factors and student wellbeing. The review included a comprehensive search strategy, relevance screening and confirmation, and data charting. Overall, 33 relevant studies were identified. Major findings provide evidence that institutional attitudes, institutional (in)action, perceived campus safety, and campus climate are associated with mental wellbeing, suggesting that campus-wide interventions can benefit from continued monitoring and targeting these measures among student populations. Due to the large variability in reporting and measurement of outcomes, the development of standardized measures for measuring institutional-level factors are needed. Furthermore, institutional participation and scaling up established population-level assessments in Canada that can help systematically collect, evaluate, and compare findings across institutions and detect changes in relevant mental health outcomes through time.

Rural and remote communities often have complex and diverse mental health needs and inadequate mental health services and infrastructure. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) provide an array of potentially innovative and cost-effective means for connecting rural and remote communities to specialist mental health practitioners, services, and supports, irrespective of physical location. However, despite this potential, a review of Australian and international literature reveals that ICT has not attained widespread uptake into social work practice or implementation in rural communities. This article reviews the social work literature on ICT, draws on research on tele-psychology and tele-education, and provides suggestions on how to enhance engagement with ICT by social workers to implement and provide mental health services and supports tailored to community values, needs, and preferences that are commensurate with the values of the social work profession.

We conducted a systematic review of online databases, selected journals, and reference lists for relevant studies. Eligible papers were assessed using a tool designed for this review for quality and study characteristics, and qualitative data demonstrating participants’ views were extracted. A total of 14 papers from seven countries were included. The published literature on this topic is relatively homogenous and studies are of variable quality. The findings suggest that, despite differing conceptualisations of mental illness causation, both traditional healers and biomedical practitioners recognise that patients can benefit from a combination of both practices and demonstrate a clear willingness to work together. There are concerns about patients’ safety and human rights regarding traditional methods and some healers are sceptical about the effectiveness of Western psychiatric medication. Despite keeping the inclusion criteria open to all LMICs, 13 of the studies were conducted in Africa, seven of which were in South Africa. This limits the applicability of the findings of this review to the wider LMIC context. The paper concludes with recommendations for research and practice.

Abstract:
Purpose The individual placement and support (IPS) model is an evidence-based approach to employment support for people with severe mental illness that functions by co-locating an employment consultant from the local disability employment service within a community mental health team to assist service users to find work. This paper aims to examine the unintended impacts of implementing IPS on occupational therapy practice and offer some suggestions. Design/methodology/approach The authors performed a narrative literature review on the IPS model, employment and occupational therapy. Authors then analysed and discussed impact on occupational therapy practice and concluded by making suggestions based on current evidence and practice. Findings The authors concluded that implementation of IPS has resulted in some unintended changes of practice in mental health with occupational therapists taking a less active role in enabling employment outcomes than previously. This paper concludes by calling upon occupational therapists to re-establish their role of enabling employment. Originality/value This paper offers an original viewpoint on employment and occupational therapy based on current evidence and authors’ expertise.

Abstract:
Objective: This paper focuses on the relation between memory and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). More specifically, it addresses the debate regarding the role of memory of the traumatic event in the development of PTSD. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is used as a naturally occuring model for traumatic exposure that is often associated with memory impairment. Method: We present a critical review of the literature on studies assessing the relation between TBI and PTSD, with a focus on memory of the traumatic event as a critical factor. We also discuss results from recent studies conducted by our group. Results: The literature review offers an inconclusive picture wherein a significant proportion of the studies indicate that PTSD and TBI are mutually exclusive, especially in individuals who exhibit lack of memory for the traumatic event. This finding supports the possibility that lack of memory may protect against the development of PTSD. However, some studies show that PTSD does occur in patients with head injury, suggesting that PTSD may develop in TBI survivors—even in those who cannot remember the traumatic event. Generally speaking, though, the overall balance of the findings (including our own findings) seems to support the possibility that, in subjects with TBI, impaired memory of the traumatic event is associated with reduced prevalence of PTSD. Conclusions: The suggestion that amnesia regarding the traumatic event may protect against the development of PTSD has both theoretical and practical importance. This review focused on the case of trauamtic brain injury as a model for impaired memory for the traumatic event. However, it still remains to be proven that the conclusions based on these findings are generalizable beyond the case of TBI. While some patients with posttraumatic amnesia do develop PTSD despite lack of memory for the traumatic event, the majority of those who lack memory for the event seem to be protected from developing the disorder. Nevertheless, based on this assumption, we suggest that pharmacologic disruption of newly acquired—or even old—traumatic memories, which has been shown to be possible in animals, might therapeutically benefit trauma survivors.

Abstract:
This article represents a modest attempt at encouraging mental health systems research with particular reference to South Africa. Despite the repeated calls for the logical inclusion of psychological services into Primary Health Care (PHC) in low to middle-income countries, such services remain absent or at best peripheral. A review of the literature, data analysis, and associated arguments, in this article, are therefore based on the view that health systems research is vital for informing policy decisions on health funding allocations and mental health service delivery. Accordingly, drawing on the records of a township-based counselling service we seek to investigate the strategic need for sound record management. Data on client service utilization patterns, client demographics, and presentation problems are instructive sources of information in considerations about the structure, management and funding of psychological services. Recognizing the methodological limitations of our study, we conclude our analysis with a broad motivation for further health systems research and a specific call for the establishment of a mental health information system that can provide routine quality data that may be used for multiple purposes.

Abstract:
Because of its physical, psychological, interpersonal and financial repercussions, post-stroke depression is a sensitive issue facing patients, clinicians and society as a whole. The author highlights some difficulties with respect to research methodology, definition, etiology and treatment as reported in the recent scientific literature. Although this review challenges some notions about etiology and rates of post-stroke depression, suggestions are outlined to help prevent, recognize and treat this disorder, the incidence of which is expected to increase because of the demographic trend of our population towards aging.

Abstract:
</p> <p>&nbsp;</p><p>Applying the theories and methods of counseling psychology in an enterprise is the core of workplace counseling and mental health. Reviewing related research on workplace counseling and mental health can facilitate understanding the development of workplace counseling and mental health research in Taiwan. This study adopted the literature review to understand the research results of workplace counseling and mental health in Taiwan. The key words of workplace counseling, employee assistance programs, and workplace mental health were used to conduct the search in the &quot; Index to Taiwan Periodical Literature System&quot; and &quot;Airiti Library&quot;. Up until April 2022, there were 51 papers that matched the purpose of the study and were thus selected and analyzed. The results indicated that: (1) The research categories are counseling and education (73%), management and labor safety (20%), medical care and health (8%). (2) The research methods are literature review (35%), practical application (27%), qualitative research (22%), quantitative research (12%), and mixed methods research (4%). The contents of workplace counseling involved employee work efficiency, mental health, etc. (3) The papers on workplace counseling and mental health with the period of 2016 to 2021 accounting for 42% of all 51 papers. (4) Among the 51 papers, there are only 8 quantitative studies, and most of them focus on the discussion of the source of stress and the survey of employees’ willingness to use counseling. They do not link employee counseling with employees’ leave or productivity changes, 5 of the 13 qualitative studies mentioned that the ethical viewpoint of business counselors has shifted from a single client to dual client. The biggest challenge for workplace counselors were how to balance the ethical principles of client confidentiality and the benefits of counseling for business owners. (5) In Taiwan, most of the empirical researches on workplace counseling and mental health were based more on qualitative interviews than on quantitative analysis, the analysis results were based on personal feelings of employees’ satisfaction, and no analysis was conducted concerning objective factors such as employee absent hours or productivity. In addition to the descriptive statistical analysis of 51 corporate consultation documents, this study also sorted out the quantitative research methods and research results of 8 quantitative studies (including 2 qualitative mixed studies) to provide reference for future research. According to these findings, detailed results and suggestions for further research were discussed.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>
